Eric Neel, like Batgirl, always champions those thing in baseball that cannot be statistically measured. He is not in love with raw numbers (but he knows them all, in case you want to call him out; the man clearly does his homework), and the fact that he's just a damn good writer helps too.

And the mojo clearly does NOT lie. As usual (and again, like BG), Eric Neel puts all the unformed theories that have been swimming in my head together for me (better than ever I could myself) and serves them up to me, perfectly blended, with a little dill because he knows that's how I like them, and dammit, they're delicious.

Sweet, sweet stuff. The bit about Radke is letter-perfect, as is pretty much everything except his suggestion that A.J. has toned down his act. It's just that A.J.'s shtick doesn't carry quite the same clout when his team is in third and fading fast. His theory about Liriano is rather intriguing as well - and, if that's our punishment for robbing the Giants blind (and ridding ourselves of the aforementioned A.J. Pierzynski), so be it.

Neel is right on most of his points, but I don't think we should be punished for the AJ trade. The twins shouldn't have to suffer because TR and his genius outwitted an extremely overmatched Brian Sabean. I believe it was Canada Bill Jones that said "It's immoral to let a sucker keep his money".

Damn, but I sure wish I could write like that!

A very good article, BG, and thanks for the link. I also believe that intangibles like mojo and momentum and chemistry will be big factors down the stretch. But trying to figure out who to pull for in the Chicago-Detroit series makes my brain hurt. It reminds me of something Whitey Herzog once said: “A slick way to outfigure a person is to get him figuring you figure he's figuring you're figuring he'll figure you aren't really figuring what you want him to figure you figure.” Go figure.

For the next two weeks, I’m just going to concentrate on channeling my psychic energy into Twins wins, and take it one game at a time. Two things, batlings: first, I am sure it is quite obvious to you that you will get no help from the White Sox as they can't even help themselves in maintaining a shred of dignity; second, you now have 100% chance of making the playoffs. Enjoy and congrats. One word of advice would be to enjoy the season the Twins are having and be sure to avoid the Yanks at all cost. I know the taste of victory in a series with the Yanks would be as sweet as it gets, but no need to tempt fate when they play the Twins so well. Good luck no matter what the matchup may be.

Yeah, but beside the mojo factor -- what is the ex-Cub count for the teams in the playoffs? (Or does anyone pay attention to that anymore?) Thanks for the continuing links to other commentary about the Twins and the AL Central; since I live in Cinci Reds land I never hear anything else about the AL.

Spyder44 - I am a White Sox fan. Right now I wish that I wasn't because this has been the most disappointing season that I can remember in my thirty years as a fan. The Twins play good baseball and have a tremendous manager that has kept them on this winning path for a good four years now. I only wish the Sox could ahve remembered how and why things went the way they did last year. I see those things in the Twins day in and day out. What is amazing is that the Twins are winning down the stretch with what really is a young, inexperienced, and untested starting staff (save Santana, of course) and they're winning big games! IF I weren't a Sox fan it would probably be so "fun" to watch. Right now it's just painful. Bottom line is that the Sox have done nothing to help themselves and the Twins have gone out there with the mindset of taking what they want. That, is what I admire the most about them and have seen come through under Gardsy. Again, congrats.

If the Chisox win the next 2, and we take 2of3 from the other sox, we tie the Tigers and are 4 up on the Alabasters. Then we win 5 of 7 from 2 bad teams, while the other 2 teams go 4-3,putting us 1 up on the Tigers and eliminating the whatsises. The problem is that makes at least the first 2 games of the final series lmportant Tiger-wise, and does not allow us to rest anyone until the final day at best. So, the point is umm, well I am not sure what it is, but I think I am saying we must win at least 9 of the final 13 for the most advantagious post season schedule to become a liklihood-go Twins.

P.S. My own personal feelings about the current Tigers/WS series is that we want the Sox to win. As much as I hate the Sox, I'm all for cheering for whatever team helps us the most. Kinda like how I actually cheer for the Stinkies about three times a year. I ain't afeared of the Sox keeping us out of the playoffs, and we can only stand to win by them beating the Tigers. Domefield advantage for the playoffs, baby!

To Tim, regarding the fact that the Yankees "play the Twins so well"; I believe that, if you look, you'll see that the two teams split the season series. So their former dominance of the Twins is no more. We'll likely have to play them at some point, and the 5-game series may be our best shot - but, either way, bring 'em on. Oh, and may I say that, for a Pale Hose fan, you seem remarkably perceptive and insightful; that seems a rare quality in your kind, to be frank. I hate to say it, but your boys probably shouldn't have won the Series last year, based on their lineup - but they did, because virtually everyone (especially the pitching staff) played way over their heads. This year, though, it's back to trying to score 10 runs a game, because the staff keeps giving up 9. Nobody wins that way, and you know that from past experience better than anyone. My condolences.

I am baffled about the whole "who do we cheer for?" thing. If the White Sox win and we win, there are still three teams in competition for two playoff berths. If they lose and we win, there are basically two teams in competition for two playoff berths, and we're one of them. It doesn't seem complicated to me.

Thank you for that "compliment". I will disagree with you adidasman and say that the White Sox should have won the World Series based on how they played the game from top to bottom. The pitching and defense was everything and the offensive execution was there at the right times. It would be hard for me to say that a team that went 11 and 1 and won 16 of their last 17 played over their heads. Some guys had career years and that happens to teams that win it all. There are some Twins having those kinds of seasons now. They may or may not do the same next year. Unfortunately, the Sox, particularly the pitching, severely underachieved this year. It all beings and ends there and the results speak for themselves. Enough about the Sox, please; let's get to the Twins and the Yankees discussion. The Twins have to remember how they have played against the Yankees in the past, how they've played in Yankee Stadium, and how they've played against them in the playoffs. I've played sports long enough to know that when a team historically "owns" another, those things don't usually break course for a good, long time. It's one of those unexplainable things that gets teams mentally. For example, as well as the White Sox played last year, Sox fans dreaded the fact that Oakland could have made the playoffs last year. Oakland OWNS them! Maybe they could have beaten them last year of all years - in fact they actually won a couple games in OAK - but strong doubt exists in my mind. I was relieved to not be facing the As. If I were a Twins fan I might have those same feelings about the Yankees. Everybody here knows how hard it is to win a World Series and how all the stars have to align. I wouldn't want to see the Yankees in my solar system becasue of that thing they've got going. They're playing well and they're "the Yankees" after all. That said, the Twins have reason(s) to be positive should they face the Yankees, and it starts and end with the fact that Santana (a.k.a. God as a southpaw) could throw twice. Find a win somewhere else and you can will that short series. Also, don't underestimate the mojo at all!!!!! The Twins are on a roll and aren't slowing down. The stars are beginning to come into line... Now, having voiced all that, I think the Twins are going to win the division and will not even have to deal with the Yankees until a potential ALCS. The most impressive thing is that the Twins are going to win the division without another head-to-head against the team in front of them. That is not easy and definitely deserves mention. And don't worry about the White Sox, becasue they are dead. They'll print the obit soon just to make it official.

By the way, how do you like that 6-0 lead you've got already??? Freight train rolling...
