Press Release - Castro Traded to CIN

Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN - The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have acquired minor league outfielder Brandon Roberts from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for infielder Jaun Castro.

Roberts, 21, was batting .267 (66-247) with five doubles, one triple, one homer, 15 rbi and 23 stolen bases in 60 games with the Sarasota Reds (A, Florida State League) this season. The 6-0, 185-pounder was originally drafted by the Reds in the seventh round of the June, 2005 free agent draft. In 2005, his first professional season, Roberts batted .318 (87-274) with nine doubles, six triples, four homers, 36 rbi and 32 stolen bases, while being selected to the Pioneer League Year-End All-Star team.

Castro, 34, was batting .231 (36-156) with five doubles, two triples, one homer and 14 rbi in 50 games with the Twins this season. He has a career batting average of .230 (467-2027) with 98 doubles, 12 triples, 31 homers and 176 rbi in 815 games. Castro was signed by the Twins as a free agent on November 23, 2004.

To replace Castro on the 25-man roster, the Twins will make a roster move prior to tomorrow night's game at Pittsburgh.

Well, I thought the Twins would make some moves, but I didn't think it would be this. *shrugs*

I would've settled for bag of sunflower seeds. I suppose a minor leaguer will do though. TRyan seems to find talent out of the sky.

Dang, we couldn't include White, Lohse, and Silva to get Adam Dunn instead?

Posted by: Shaun at June 15, 2006 06:18 PM

I like it. Juan was going to be the odd-utility-infielder-out, anyway, and although we still have a couple of guys who can play short, this move looks like a more solid commitment to Bartlett.

Getting rid of veterans in June usually looks like giving up the season, but not this year.

And Boof is right. A couple of years from now, this could look like a really good deal on the addition side, too.

Well, best wishes to Castro, but I can't say I'm sad to see him go.

I hope they're ready for an influx of LEADERSHIP over in Cincinnati!

Now before we all think about trading Rondell, I wanted to share this quote from MLB.com:

"... the hope is maybe [last night's start would] help spark White, who has been impressing many with his hits during batting practice."

Now if we can only convince opposing pitchers to throw batting practice during a game......

Didn't the twins realize when they signed castro that he wasn't a 'hitter' he's the defense guy...Mr reliable....but...i guess they want to give a guy with a worst batting average a chance about poor castro...Well...he's back where he came from at least

Good bye mr. castro, I wish you the best. I am also very happy to see mr. Bartled doing so well.

All in all the fair thing to do for Castro. And if the prospect works out, that's great.

I feel bad for Castro because he apparently loves being in Minnesota and playing for the Twins. But it's the best thing for the team: Bartlett needs playing time, and will probably produce both offensively and defensively better than Juan.

I certainly wish him all the best.

I wish Castro the best as well. Certainly no ill will involved. He performed the way he was expected to when he was brought in as a utility player, maybe a bit better than expected. But it's well past Bartlett's time to prove himself without looking over his shoulder. This keeps Gardy from being tempted to jerk the kid around again, I would hope.

Next up, Stewart and Sierra return and White moves on. Maybe Eyre goes down and Neshek comes up.

If Silva's leg is serious, maybe even Durbin gets a shot? who knows.

I'll miss Castro. May he slay many infidels in his new-old home.

Posted by: Torhu at June 15, 2006 10:36 PM

*sigh* I'll miss him... things move on and change and even get better sometimes. But, I'll still miss him. Bye Juany!! *wave* *blows kisses*

I'm sad to see him go. He was there for us in our worst times, he loved to play here, and this is how we cast him out. Oh, well. That's baseball for ya! Good luck Castro and keep up the good work Bartlett!!!

JA, from TR's standpoint...it's not like he's throwing him out of town.

He's sent him back to his old team, where he knows he'll play a more regular utility role (if such a thing exists)

As it is now, he'd be buried in a four-deep rotation at third base.

Best of luck to GTX - I hope things turn around for him back in Cin city. I'll kinda miss having him around... Still, I am excited to have Bartlett back up. Mixed feelings abound.

Posted by: FordHoiberg at June 16, 2006 12:29 AM

'bye GTX. I wish him nothing but the best in Cincy.

Now then. Oh Jason Bartlett, be still my heart! Whipping 'round and 'round the bases while looking ever so darling... He might not go boom boom all the time, but that's quite alright as long as he keeps going zoom zoom! Is it time for a new addition over at the BatStore?

Wow. Castro traded for a kid in A Ball. That's gotta sting.

Posted by: Adam at June 16, 2006 06:55 AM

How can you be sad to see a career .230 hitter go? I don't understand.

Posted by: L'Shawn at June 16, 2006 08:18 AM

Manos De Oro! We shall miss your golden hands in minnesota. I hope we see them again in the world series....I know it's a long shot, but a girl can still hope.

Posted by: christy at June 16, 2006 08:25 AM

Well, I will miss Castro-- not for his hitting, but for his damn fine glove and his personality. So long, the Flying Circus.
But he was getting crowded out here, it was past time for the Kid to play, and I'm growing fonder of Bartlett by the minute.

Posted by: Katharriet at June 16, 2006 08:37 AM

I agree with the general feeling: Castro's a likable guy, and it's sad to see him go, but it's time for Bartlett to get his real shot. (ok, it was probably time for that last year, but it's too early in the day to get into that).
