TwinsFest: Should We Stay (Home) or Should We Go?

A Batling writes to ask what Twins Fest is like, how much waiting in line there is, and what does one have to do to cuddle Justin Morneau. Batgirl can only offer this exciting photo montage. Can you guide him?

Twins fest rules! AND I wore a "Mulholland is my old man" T-shirt to a game this year and he gave me a high-five, but alas I did not cuddle with him at Twins fest, perhaps you have to sell your soul?

GO! You never know what will happen - you might get to smell a cute Aussie - well that might be kind of hard this year - but it's always a good time I think!

And need I say more- DOME DOGS - LOL

Hmmm- I say start talking a little hockey - but I think the Good Doctor has a photo session this year - you may get a cuddle in =)

TwinsFest is an amazing time! Go! You have to! It's so much fun and it's just a blast! :)

Posted by: Candace at January 25, 2006 10:34 PM

i went with my sister last year, and we took a pic with lew and it was amazing. he said, "scoot in close, girls" and we were like, "no problem, lew!" as i said, it was fabulous.

Posted by: Hannah! at January 25, 2006 11:07 PM

OK, that was strange. I clicked the link for the exciting photo montage and started reading the posts and thought to myself "self, these comments look oh so familiar - these people were having the same conversations last year". Then I hit the bottom and saw that there was no comment posting section, looked at the dates of the posts, put down my drink and finally realized that that was, in fact, the thread from last year. Of course if I would have stopped to think that TwinsFest has not yet occurred this year I may have caught on sooner. But, like I said, I did have a drink in my hand so I'll blame it all on the scotch and the off-season.

As for the subject at hand...OF COURSE you should go. Yes, if you want some physical contact and some signatures you will be waiting in lines (there are some ways around that but the whole posting bail thing is really a drag). The whole atmosphere is wonderful and even if you don't spend the necessary time in queues you will most certainly have a completely enjoyable time there. I think the best part is simply being in the dome with a bunch of fellow Twins fans. There is really nothing better…at least during the off-season.

It’s not baseball season so it’s not like the real thing but its almost as good. For me it’s a lot like the Sunday night before Christmas when I was little. After the annual church Christmas play (I was always a wise man…I thought it was because I was smart but I think it was really because I was a smart ass but that’s another story) we would come home and we would all get to open up one present. You got a little of the thrill of the big night and you knew that the real thing was coming soon. It was like Christmas Eve eve. TwinsFest is like home opener opener. The big event is close behind - this is just a little taste to help us pass the time until then!

So go get a dome dog, take a tour, buy some stuff you don’t need, roll on the turf and just drink in the baseball atmosphere. You’ll be a much happier person afterwards. By the way, if you ARE fortunate enough to actually smell a cute Aussie make sure you don’t make any cracks about her toes!

Just go!

Last year was the first year I went. A friend and I spent all day there Saturday. After a long off-season, it's always nice to realize there is hope for spring.

The Chairman is going to be on the Cities97 this morning - I think - either that or tomorrow but I'm sure it's this morning - I haven't had breakfast yet - so no stone throwing if I'm wrong =)

If anyone hears it give us a recap - I have a meeting from 8-11 - boooo =)

If you want an autograph from one of the more popular players, you'll be in line for a long, long time. If you want your photo taken with one of the most popular players, you'll be in line for almost as long.

In many cases, though, you can get up close to some of the retired or newer players without a lot of waiting. And TwinsFest represents a great opportunity to see lots of players off the field, even if you don't want to bother with autographs or photos.

There are plenty of other fun things to do as well. You can take a tour of the dugout and locker room, you can play "Dodge Ball" and possibly win free game tickets, and last year Demigoddess the Younger won a Corie Koskie bobblehead playing Twingo. Both Demis pretended to be sportscasters at the Fox Sports booth, which was hilarious. And the Pro Shop sells lots of Twins merchandise, including game-used items, much of it at deep discounts.

It's also your first opportunity to purchase game tickets for the coming season. If you want to be at the home opener, your best chance for decent seats is to buy them at Twins Fest.

We'll be there on Saturday, the Demis in BatGirl T-shirts and me in my (now a collector's item) "Lew Ford is my Boyfriend" shirt.

Go to TwinsFest! See players, take photos, get autographs, eat a dome dog!

I'll be there Saturday - in a 'Chicks dig small ball' t-shirt so say hi (see photo montage)!

There could be nothing wrong with surrounding oneself with baseball on a January Saturday. It's the perfect antidote to the apoplectic sports media blathering on and on about some football game/media event.

I go almost every year, but I confess to feeling a bit underwhelmed. There is a definite possibility of sensory overload down on the dome floor. I've never had the patience to stand in long lines for autographs. Plus, I'm not a card collector, so the big area of sales tables is overwhelming.

BUT...you get to be down on the field. It is a treat to see so many people out in baseball jerseys in January. You can pick up the new pocket schedule for the Twins, plus the Gopher baseball team has a table with their schedules and posters. Any baseball in January...it's a fine thing.

I'll be there Friday right when the doors open at 5:30 in my "The Offseason Sucks" hoodie. Stop and say hi.

Posted by: heraldguy at January 26, 2006 08:34 AM

I will be there on Saturday proudly wearing my "The offseason sucks" sweatshirt. I have gone to Twinsfest every year since it started and have always enjoyed it. I don't wait in line for autographs, but if you wander around the lines you can usually get close enough to catch a look at your favorite boyfriend (or NSMC). I have gotten photos with several former players (it is a bit easier than the current BFs) including Dan Gladden, Bert B, and my favorite, JACK MORRIS... The clubhouse tour is fun, the WCCO broadcast entertaining (and a good place to take a rest) plus there are highlights shown from past years. You can stay as long as you like and soak up the atmosphere. By all means, GO!

I will be making the annual trek from Iowa to the "Fest" This may be the first time that I don't feel the need to stand in line for autographs. Plus, Joe Mauer, Oliva, and Silva were in Mason City on Tuesday for the Caravan. I do enjoy the memoribilia show. More stuff to put in my basement that I don't room for. My son will stand in line all day to play wiffle ball, a couple of years ago he got to hit off of Joe Mays (who didn't?!?) Bring some $$$$ and have some fun, pitchers and catchers report on the 19th of Feb!!!!!!!

I found a pretty amusing item for same on ebay just now.

Click my name to see it yourself.

Posted by: Eric at January 26, 2006 09:44 AM

I'm dumb- "for same" should read for sale.

Posted by: Eric at January 26, 2006 09:45 AM

Eric, not only is the item itself hilarious, but the fact that the current bid is $66 is *really* hilarious.

All right, we're going. We have free tickets and bobbleheads thrown in, so why not? The only autograph I want is, I want Torii to sign a picture of our cat Torii. I might have him sign something else for this kid I know.

Posted by: kurtis at January 26, 2006 10:02 AM

I'm going to Twins Fest for the first time this year. Dumb question, but will the players sign anything, or will they only sign pictures or something lame? I ask because my daughter is a huge Torii fan, and wants him to sign a Twins logo baseball for her, so I'm hoping that's okay.

Posted by: smaki at January 26, 2006 10:37 AM

Hi smaki,

They may or may not balk at body parts, but I think they'll sign pretty much anything else. I have a big Twins flag. Baseballs are a very popular option, plus you can get a ball display/protector pretty cheap!

Happiest of birthdays to me, Twinsfest starts on my birthday this year, although, I won't be able to go until Saturday.

Happy Birthday!

Mine is on Sunday =)

I'm going on Saturday and my only advice is to have as much fun as possible...which isn't nard being surrounded by Twins players and having that feeling of baseball being right around the corner.

I cannot WAIT!

Go to Twinsfest! By all means go, go go, go! Take the tour of the clubhouse (interesting!), look at the Hall of Fame display, hug TC, and cuddle up with your favorite Twins player! My cousin and I cuddled with our favorite Twins last year (well she cuddled with TC) and they we all very nice, Matty LeCroy threw his arms around us and we even joked around with Bert! I'll be there in my pink "I'm here for the sass!" Bat-girl t-shirt.

Happiest of birthdays to you too Wonder Woman!

In regard to the query above aboue what players will sign: Last year, a member of the RD/S-n-S (Sweet-n-Sassy) posse had El Presidente and Carlos Silva sign her Venezuelan flag.

One disturbing note: last year, a $10 ticket got Santana, Silva, Cuddyer, Joe Mays and someone else whom RD can't remember. This year, the marquis player is Torii Hunter and its $10 for him signing solo.

Of course, Boof Bonser is free!

RD just went over to the Done and checked out his posse's season-ticket location. He's very happy.

Posted by: RonDavis at January 26, 2006 04:38 PM

How early do you guys recommend getting in line for the popular players? My dad really wants me to get him a Killebrew autograph, but I've heard he's a slow signer. I'm planning on getting him on Sunday. I also have a request to get a ball signed by Mauer for my brother.

I was at the Cubs Convention a few weeks ago and the lines were hopeless there. My brother and I stood in Ron Santo's line for 3+ hours and still missed him.

Posted by: VitalStatistic at January 26, 2006 05:07 PM

GO! GO! GO! Last year was the first year I went. The first auto I got was J. Ro's, I was so nurvious, but so excited @ the same time. I was even first in line for Lohse (my love) (only because I was in the way back for Cuddy). I didn't get my pic w/ anyone, but this year I want to do Morneau and Crian for sure (Canada Rocks!).I'll be gong Fri. and Sat. (and even have a schedule for myself), then I'll be going to Stars on Ice afterward on Sat. I'll be so dead after this weekend!!!! ONLY ONE MORE DAY!!!!!!

Posted by: Mel at January 26, 2006 07:20 PM

Thanks for the great info, She-Ra! I now have a plan to go early on Sunday and get in Torii's line right away, and just wait until he gets there. Maybe I'll send Little Smack over to get Boof Bonser's autograph while I'm in line!

Posted by: smaki at January 27, 2006 07:59 AM

I can't believe I can't make it to Twinsfest!!! I have to remodel a bathroom! Stupid bathroom! Can somebody please give Cuddy and Guerrie big hugs from me? I would greatly appreciate it!

I might be a bit apprehensive about eating a Dome Dog ... leftovers from the regular season? ... I suppose eating a Dome Dog at any time of year carries the same risk.

Happy birthday to the late January babies!
