Pax Bitchsoxius

Congratulations to the 2005 World Series Champion Chicago Bitch Sox, who tonight were crowned the bitchiest in the whole wide world. They, in typically bitchy fashion, denied the poor Houston fans the right to even experience a modicum of World Series joy. The pitchers didn't even let them score tonight, which was just mean.

Now, get rid of Konerko and a few of the funny-looking guys in the offseason, 'kay?

And while you're getting rid of Konerko, make sure he heads over here.

Mmmm....Minnesota Twin Paul Konerko. It has a nice ring to it.

Posted by: Torhu at October 26, 2005 11:38 PM

Komerko would look nice in a Twins uniform. Too bad Crede isn't a free agent too!

Anyway, Terry Ryan-time to get to work so the Twins can reclaim the AL Central and this time make it to the Series.

Posted by: Shaun at October 26, 2005 11:43 PM

Congratulations to the White Sox, for sure. They played hard the whole way through, and truthfully played Twins baseball better than the Twins did this year. There were a lot of "wow" moments for me these past few nights. I have to admit I had goosebumps for a few moments afterwards when the final out was recorded.

I have a hard time believing Ozzie's really going to follow through on retiring now. Still if he does, they might be able to talk Jerry Manuel into coming back, likewise getting Roberto Alomar to come out of retirement (sending Brandon McCarthy and Tad Iguchi to the Diamondbacks for the sake of tradition). Maybe they can trade Buehrle to the Dodgers for Jose Valentin. Kenny make it happen!

Posted by: Skorch at October 26, 2005 11:44 PM

I'd express my true thoughts right now, but BG's profanity filter would explode.

Posted by: joel. at October 26, 2005 11:46 PM

let us all take a moment and be thankful it wasn't the Yank's or the Red Socks.

Honestly, I am simply glad it was a team that has not won the WS in a long time. The game needs to spread that WS love around. So who's next to go that hasn't gone in a long time!

(sorry if that sounds too much like a preschool teacher.)

Dearest Bat-Girl,

It is so indescribably sweet. You should know; you had it twice in 87 and 91. So much pain washed away in so little time.

Sox fans have to thank the Twins. After they beat our brains in for three years, we finally decided to play like the Twins. Hell, we even bought ourselves a Twin! We had great pitching and could field the ball. If you don't think that's because of the Twins, you're crazy.

Thank you Minnesota, and God bless the White Sox.

Don't hold back Leslie, tell us how you really feel. Invoke Godwin's Law too next time, I mean, just for completeness sake. I mean, yeah, I'm sure that Ozzie is the moral equivalent of Pol Pot, and Paul Konerko says really mean things to small furry animals in his free time.

You don't have to like it, but do you have to take it to such melodramatic extremes? Saying you hate the White Sox like you hate Bin Laden is the first thing I've seen in this site that I've frankly been baffled at. While I understand that a rival team winning it all can be disconcerting, it should never make such a mental disconnect as to equate the winning team with someone like Bin Laden. If that's how you honestly feel, get help from a qualified professional.

Posted by: Pander at October 27, 2005 03:16 AM

Really, I don't know how any of us could hate the White Sox all that deeply, much less equate them to Bin Laden. The Twins beat up on them for the last 4 years, and there wasn't much of a rivalry between the two clubs before that.

The White Sox and their fans deserve their moment to bask in glory. They had the best record in the league, and capped it off with an 11-1 run through the postseason and a World Series sweep. Good for them. I tip my cap, and look forward to next Spring, when I'll be rooting for the Twins to knock the bitches down again.

Dear BG-

I am already in PAX BS funk...not so much because the Evil Ones won it all but because we'll have to wait another five months for a real baseball game. Sigh. Long winter ahead.

Thanks to you for another brilliant year of fun and insightful analysis.

Best,

Oh

Posted by: oh at October 27, 2005 05:23 AM

In all honesty, I am not thrilled with this turn of events.

However -- all I really, truly wanted out of this postseason was for the Yankees to be eliminated quietly and early. I got that. It would be selfish to ask for more.

So, congratulations, White Sox. I do wish you had gotten to win without the half-dozen blown ump calls, if for no other reason than you could just call it a clean win. Be happy with your Series, let it soak away the shame of Shoeless Joe and the rest. Have a happy and pleasant off-season.

Because we are coming for you next year.

Posted by: CarrieICL at October 27, 2005 05:51 AM

Congrats to the BSox. They played well for most of the year, got a few lucky breaks, and we got to watch AJ win a championship with some wild plays.

But, Carrie says we're coming for you next year, and if she says it, you'd better believe it. Remember Koskie's thumbs???

"When do pitchers and catchers report?"

The best comment so far was from JimCrikket.

Personally, I love the Bitch Sox. I love that we have a rivalry worth caring about. I love that it points out the stupidity of interleague play, and our "rivalry" with the Milwaukee Drunken Slobs. And I love that the AL Central gets some love. And the best thing about the Bitch Sox winning it all: It EMPHASIZES the ongoing ineptitude of the Cubs - the most undeserving recipients of national admiration in all of sport.

Lovingly,

Glove Boy

Posted by: Glove Boy at October 27, 2005 07:22 AM

Congratulations to the winners. I didn't want you to win, because the rivalry exists that strongly, but I won't say that you didn't deserve it. You are a good baseball team--I just wanted it to be us. :)

*looks around at the bleak world without baseball* The offseason sucks. (115 days until pitchers and catchers. I can make it! Batgirl Book Club will show me the way!)

Pander:
"Saying you hate the White Sox like you hate Bin Laden is the first thing I've seen in this site that I've frankly been baffled at."

Have you not been paying attention to Twins Hottest Chick? I think I need the offseason to recover from seeing that, moreso than coming to grips with the baseball played by the White Sox over the last few weeks.

4 straight complete games by their starters, only one loss in the playoffs (after salvaging a tanking season).

Count me in as one of the people that wasn't worried about the White Sox in the postseason. It would come down to the Yankees, Angels, Astros or Cards, for sure. The White Sox would hopefully beat the Red Sox and lose promptly in the ALCS.

Count me in as one of the people who sorely underestimated the ability of this team to play in the clutch. Incredible pitching, incredible clutch hitting, and how about Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko and Joe Crede? Wow. I am impressed.

Congrats to the 2005 Chicago White Sox. I would love to say "well, sometimes the best team doesn't win...etc." but for all but 4 weeks of the 2005 season, the White Sox WERE the best team (even though I hate admitting to it).

Best to all,

I am feeling oddly satisfied this morning.

Posted by: Say Rah! at October 27, 2005 08:34 AM

Nice: "Yeah, a month ago, they were calling us chokers," said White Sox poet laureate A.J. Pierzynski on a magical night in October. "But now they can call us something else that starts with a C-H -- champions."

(from http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2005/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=2204831)

btw- I'm detecting some bitching coming from this area right over here (drawing a circle around this thread). I mean most of the posts are very classy and sportsmanlike but come on... the sox played a better regular season than even the Evil Empire did and they played a monster of a postseason. On top of it all, the whole "can't we all just get along"/melting pot kind of feel-good human interest story is really good for baseball. So's the fact that they're a $75m payroll team.

Yay, Sox. Enjoy it while it lasts ;-)

Other enjoyable quotes from the aforementioned article:

"What an inning," Blum would say later. "It was scary. It was quixotic. What's that mean, anyway -- quixotic?"

and:

"I'm not sure what happened after that," said Jenks, "other than a whole lot of loudness -- and a bunch of guys hitting me on the head."

Then he looked up and saw his catcher, Pierzynski, sprinting toward him -- and (yikes) leaping into his arms.

"I knew he was coming," Jenks said. "I just had a feeling. I saw it in his face: 'Here I come.' "

"Hey, I knew he wouldn't drop me," Pierzynski said. "He might be the only guy in the league who's fatter than me."

"It didn't matter how big he is," Jenks said. "I could have picked up a car right then."

Come on, if these were the Cubs, or hell, just about any other team in baseball, you wouldn't be so upset.

Congrats to the bad bad south side of Chicago - nice team you got. I didn't think anyone would figure out Roy Oswalt, but you knocked him around good.

Don't despair fellow Twins fans. We have a fine team, too, and I sincerely believe we're just a bat away (I'm thinking a Chili Davis, Shane Mack, Tom Brunansky, Paul Konerko, or possibly a healthy, confident Justin Morneau) from a fun division battle next year.

Posted by: nailbiter at October 27, 2005 09:12 AM

In tribute, here is a paraphrase (as best I can remember) of a story about ex-White Sox shortstop Luke Appling, from The Baseball Book by Bill James:

Near the end of his career, Appling was asked
what his saddest day in baseball was. He said
that he had one every year. It was the last
day of the season, when he knew there wouldn't
be a game tomorrow.

That about sums it up. When do pitchers and catchers report?

Posted by: Jeff at October 27, 2005 09:31 AM

To all but one of the twins fans on here, thank you for kicking our ass year after year until someone finally began to take it personally and really try to build a team to take you on with. Screw the media, the AL Central is the best division in baseball. I don't think this rivalry is going to get any easier any time soon.

Obviously congrats to the winners and their fans...but, following on the heels of last year's one-sided contest, I'm fearing a long-term trend. I admit to being a bit spoiled by some of the most recent Fall Classics that have had great two-sided competition and drama, but I would settle for somewhere in between...like an NL team SHOWING UP for hell's sake.

This is a difficult day for men with crushes on Sheryl Swoopes, and Twins fans everywhere. But this "congratulations" and "respect" thing is a little much, no? Red Sox fans didn't congratulate the Yankees when they were winning the World Series every frickin' year, and folks in the Bronx who made nice after last October most probably had their Bleacher Bum nicknames revoked.

Referencing the greatest ancient hatefest in baseball is obviously a bit of a stretch to make a point about us and Chicago, but rivalries don't mean anything unless one team or the other is winning big. The Bitch Sox have been in our division all the way back to 1961, followed us through the West and Central realignments, ruined 1992 for us, came between me and my Chicagoland-native girlfriend in 2000, and were our primary reference point from 2002-04. Now that they aren't just a Dr. Dre fashion accessory anymore, and have hundreds of thousands of fans who retroactively were "there all along," maybe Twins-Bitch Sox will really start meaning something now.

Here's a motto for anyone with a T-shirt printer: 2006... IT'S ON, BITCH

BTW, I think the Asstros did show up for the series as all of the games were quite close. The Sox just wanted it more. This was evident when Uribe caught that foul in the stands.

Posted by: TwinsGoddess at October 27, 2005 11:37 AM

Methinks "once in a lifetime event" refers to winning it all after an 88-year drought. IOW, there is plenty-o-wiggle room to win it all again next year. But it ain't happening.

So, for 24 hours, I'll say 'Yay, Sox' but then it's back to "do-doooo-do-do-doot, do-doooo.... we're gonna win Twins, we're gonna score..."

Do the White Sox have a cheesy song? I was mostly absent 'cept the AJ game, so if it was brought up this postseason, I missed it.

Posted by: jekyll at October 27, 2005 12:16 PM

Wow, Jamie Burke, demoted to AAA Charlotte in May not due to injury but for his talent level, and now some imposter comes here to whine about what Burke himself said wasn't a cheap shot (and which Ozzie lauded as a good, hard play):
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1847744

Now I completely get why they are the Bitch Sox. The team figures it out and goes out to get a good hardnosed player like AJ (whom the Giants out here should have kept) and it pays off for Chitown, and some whiny weiner of a southside fan visits this site to coopt Burke's name and contradict Jamie himself? On the night the team finally wins a title?

Good to see most of the Chicago fans on this site show a lot more class. Congrats to AJ, and I look forward to next year.

Posted by: SFSouthpaw at October 27, 2005 12:25 PM

One good thing to come out of this is the recognition that AL Central isn't some branch of the minor leagues that fits in between AA and AAA.

This morning on Sportscenter, Peter Gammons (who in fairness has been kinder than most analysts in discussing the middle of the country) made a case for the White Sox as not just the World Series Champs, but also clearly the best team in baseball this year. (Now, I know, I know, that this would have just been accepted, not argued, had the Yankees had this kind of a season -- but stick with me.) His final point was that the White Sox led wire to wire in the AL Central, which was a collective 8 GAMES OVER .500 against the AL East. Now was that so hard?

If it takes a Wox series win to make that happen, well, it's an ill wind that blows nobody good. Not living in the Twins' viewing area, I depend on occasional national broadcasts to see the Central division in action. Maybe we can count on a few more broadcasts, and if there's a good Twins/Sox race next year, better yet. (Go Twins, though, of course!)

Posted by: hrunting at October 27, 2005 01:52 PM

Hopefully, by the Twins.

As a Sox fan, thank you for all the kind words. I hope you don't think I'm trying to rub it in, but I had to pass along a link to an article in today's Chicago Tribune. If there's any baseball site that would appreciate some beautiful writing, it's this one.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/chi-0510270173oct27,1,2537517.story

"Baseball is played in the summer but ends in the autumn, when the light starts to fail and kids are called inside early, taken reluctantly from their games in vacant lots and dead-end streets. The moments are precious because they perish. The joy is special because it's temporary. 'Death is the mother of beauty,' wrote Wallace Stevens. What makes today so amazing--the first full day after the Sox victory--is that it is unique in the history of the world. And will remain so. Cherish it, because it is moving steadily out of your reach."

Jeez, I'm gonna start crying again. Read the article; it's not for nothing that the writer, Julia Keller, won a Pulitzer.

Um...

1. Thanks to BG and all else on the congrats - very classy. Aside from being proud of my Sox, I am also proud of the AL Central being the strongest division in the AL.

2. There are many true Sox fans, such as myself, who have been such since childhood. But there are also bandwagon jumpers. Just like with any other team.

3. People who actually think that a couple bad umpiring calls that went the Sox way (and there were plenty that went the other way too) is the reason they won obviously weren't paying attention. We went 11-1 in the postseason. Give me a break.

4. Ozzie is a bit psycho, he speaks English at about 50% proficiency and Spanish at 75%, and he doesn't filter much of his dialogue. But I think at this point that there is no denying the fact that the man understands the game at as high a level as any other manager in the game. Like him or don't, he's a gamer.

5. I am looking forward to next season in a BIG way. I see a tough battle in the Central, with not just CHW, MIN and CLE, but even DET maybe coming of age. I'd put money on an ALC team going to the series next year again.

6. Finally, thanks to BG and the fans on this site for providing much entertainment and a lot of class throughout the season, even towards a Sox fan like me. Cheers.

That's the sign of a good rivalry.

I can't say I'm going to be rooting for you guys at all next season, but looking forward to another battle. Hopefully, you'll stay healthy and we'll make a solid race out of this thing.

We had 88 years of calls going AGAINST us - about time we got a few. :) And I agree with you hrunting - how about LESS of the Spankees, Borioles and Deadsox on EPSN all the damn time. Let's see some Central Division Wed night games of the week!

Can't wait for April 3rd to see the championship banner raised. Too bad we won't raise it Apr 21st. ;) See the Twinkies next year for another season of great rivalry.
