Rumors are flying that the Yanks and the Red Sox are very interested in the services of Mr. Torii K. Hunter. While BG can fathom a couple Red Sox trades, who on earth do the Yankees think they're going to give to us for Torii? They say Cano is off-limits (and isn't he craptastic defensively anyway?) and the rest of their roster makes, minimum, 80 mil a year.
EDIT: And in other news, Dougie really needs to learn that silence is golden. I can't imagine who he and AJ ever have a conversation, doesn't one of them have to be not talking at any given time?
FURTHER EDIT: BG found this comment from Frightwig to be stunning in its insight:
I imagine Doug and A.J. as a pair of Furbies, contentedly babbling away at each other. Or maybe Dougie does most of the talking, while A.J. punctuates his thoughts with the occasional "BOO-YAA!" and "Fuck, yeah!"

Discuss.
Per BG's request, I've moved to this thread from the Crede butt thread.
I guess I only saw the Hunter rumor included in the story about Cashman's new contract.
"Cashman also can focus on finding the Yankees a center fielder and bullpen help. Help in center will likely come from the trade market since the Yankees don't want to get involved in a long-term deal with Johnny Damon, who will be 32 early next month.
Torii Hunter, Mike Cameron and Milton Bradley will be shopped.
The Yankees may have to part with second baseman Robinson Cano to land Hunter. The Mets and Yankees would need a third team to get Cameron since the Mets aren't going to deliver Cameron directly to The Bronx."
YF, You are probably right about the Hunter for Cano deal, and it probably won't happen. But, that's what makes the hot stove league fun......to me anyways.
I think it makes all kinds of sense for Dougie to return to Minnesota. Just think of all the fans he'll draw to Midway Stadium - the Saints haven't had a marquee name like his since Darryl!
Posted by: adidasman at October 26, 2005 01:28 PMI'd do a Carl Pavano for Torii, but the Yanks have had pitching shortages as it is.
Posted by: Eric at October 26, 2005 01:32 PMPavano for Torii? Done and done.
Right now, I would be happy with a Moose/Johnson/Wang/Chacon/Small rotation, win or lose.
I would love to drop Pavano (just doesn't seem suited to the New York mentality) and pick up Hunter in the process.
YankeeFan (who makes considerably less than Cashman, mind you)
Posted by: YankeeFan at October 26, 2005 01:35 PMno way will the twins trade hunter for another arm (cept maybe a good lefthander in the pen... then its goodbye mr romero) the twins need a bat... especially if they lose hunter. boston's the more likely choice... maybe mueller and millar both.

I'd take Cano for Hunter--and the $10m in freed payroll to spend--if we could get it. Trading Hunter for an expensive pitcher like Pavano doesn't make any sense for the Twins. The team needs offensive upgrades at most positions, and the GM needs some budget flexibility. Cano works. Pavano wouldn't help at all.
Posted by: frightwig at October 26, 2005 02:51 PM"Pavano wouldn't help at all"
If that's not the understatement of the year...
I agree frightwig (no shocker) and your reasoning underscores why it would be a bad deal for the Yanks to trade Cano for Hunter. We need starting pitching though, and you need hitting, so there may be room for a deal there. Take Pavano, Sheff and a bag of cash (to pay their salaries) and send us Hunter and Silva. Everybody wins.
Thoughts?
YankeeFan
Dear Mr. Fan,
Only if by "everybody wins" you mean "the Yankees win and the Twins end up with #@$@# Sheff."
Sincerely,
Batgirl
BG,
That's not right. The Twins are a team with excellent pitching and defense, not to mention the moral high ground. They lack a hitter. Sheff's .300/30/100 would look good in Twins' pinstripes, especially at my proposed discounted rate. With Sheff protecting him, no doubt Lew Ford would hit .300/15/100 as well (provided Shannon is still setting the table). don't get me started on what Mauer could accomplish in the 2-hole.
I take it that baseball prowess isn't the reason you don't want Sheff. Understood, but if you want a hitter, he's a pretty good one... and a much better option than Millar/Miller/Mueller/Moeller/Mauler or whoever...
We can still be friends, right?
YF
Posted by: YankeeFan at October 26, 2005 03:36 PMI think we'd just have to get some other teams involve. Beyond Cano, well, everthing is out of our price range. Sure, sheff has some time left as a DH, but I don't think the yankees are going to be willing to absorb enough $. Besides, do you really think he would be happy being traded to the twins? I think it is fair to say we don't want anything to do with each other.
Posted by: Bob at October 26, 2005 03:52 PMHeavens knows, I'd take Konerko over Sheff, if we're going to sell our soul and our pocketbook for a big hitter. That's a personality, not a statistical, decision, too.
I can so see Dougie and AJ as Furbies. Really foul Furbies. AJ found a good home, and I hope Dougie can, too, but I don't think it's here anymore.
Dear Mr. Fan,
As the song goes, I will always love you. But Mr. Sheffield made it very clear as the trade deadline approached that if he got traded to a team he didn't want to go to, he would make that team very unhappy. BG takes him at his word.
And mitts off Silva.
Sincerely,
Batgirl
speaking of America's Sweetheart, apparently AJ also talks with his body -- from ESPN's wrapup:
"Said Blum: "A.J. told me 'Fatty is hungry and he needs to eat.' I did it for his stomach.""
Posted by: msb at October 26, 2005 04:27 PMNo no! That can't trade Torii. I can't even think about it.
Posted by: Linda at October 26, 2005 04:29 PMMy first post- get so excited I make a typo. Now I know what the preview button is for.Sigh.
Posted by: Linda at October 26, 2005 04:32 PMOK, like half of my post got cut off up there, I didn't mean Pavano for Torii straight up.
I originally had that of course, we need bats, but that Lohse and J.C. appear to be on the way out, probably to be replaced by Baker and Liriano. I think the best plan would be to split trades up instead of going one for one and go for a three or more team trade where we could get more pieces (we need more than one player!) to fit in. Therefore, in getting Pavano for Torii we might then be able to turn around and make a multiple team trade invloving Lohse, Pavano and J.C. (a young starter with experience, lefty veteran and lefty bullpen) and would be able to pull much more from different teams. In the end, 1. don't give up any of our young aces, 2. pitching is at a premium and will get you more and better hitters in a trade than Torii for a hitter, and 3. I am really really bored with the Twins not playing baseball right now.
Thoughts?
Posted by: Eric at October 26, 2005 04:34 PMDear Batgirl
That furby picture is too dan funny, maybe you should replace Stern instead of DLR. Also I think since you and YF are talking Twins/yankees trade, this is where I should make a ridiculous offer for Santana so how about Scott Proctor and Tony Womack for Santana and Hunter.
Yours in negotion
mike
I'll take Cano for Hunter, sure. As long as you throw in Chacon.
You can keep your Pavano.

Absolutely hilarious!
Posted by: Hannah (the second) at October 26, 2005 07:54 PMrandom thought as I watch my beloved Astros try to not get swept because I've got tickets to game 5 and would really like to have a game 5 to go see... shouldn't Santana politely tell hitters when he strikes them out for the 3rd out in an inning 'go play defense, bitch!' instead of sit down?
just wondering...
Posted by: ericthirdrow at October 26, 2005 09:08 PMBG, that is sad that Sheff would say something like that. Of course, I recall Sprewell recieving a talking to after attempting to threaten "not-playing" when the Wolves didn't want to negotiate his contract.
Posted by: Torhu at October 26, 2005 10:07 PMThat's beautiful, Beege. Even better than I dreamed.
Posted by: frightwig at October 26, 2005 10:56 PMSheff is a pathetic excuse for a human being. There is only one team I would wish him on, and sadly, he actually wants to play there. Re: Millar and Mueller, I believe they are both free agents this winter- you shall have your shot at them without a trade.

I was foulmouthed on Saturday at my site (since edited), but I think I was correct in my assessment of Minky.
It's time for Torii to go. Give me Cano and Eric Duncan and I will be happy.
I don't want Sheffield here. He would not fit the team's concept whatsoever and he has made it clear that he would retire if he was traded so forget him. Cano and Duncan would be good enough.
Posted by: Leslie Monteiro at October 27, 2005 02:27 AMI was at a toy store recently and came upon an entire display of Furbies. I thought that I was having a bad 80s flashback. Now I know that I was actually seeing Dougie and AJ. Thanks, FrightWig!
Posted by: Anita at October 27, 2005 02:37 AMOK, granted, I've been up for like 24 hours at this point but I'm still giggling Moose Johnson Small Wang...
btw- If I'm not mistaken, "Mientkiewicz" is Polish for "ungrateful prick".

He's annoying and doesn't know when to shut his yap, it's true, but I just can't help it. I will always love him. Forever and ever.
Yes, please! Bring back Doug please!
I like this whole "Doug still can't shut his damn mouth" thing, I really do. Furthermore, if I thought for a minute that his ego and Terry Ryan's budget could handle him being a defensive backup, I'd love to have him back. But get real, Doug. Just because The Mighty Mountie (tm) didn't whack out 40 last year doesn't mean he's not still Mr. Action...Mr. Future...Mr. Mighty Mountie!
Posted by: Petey at October 27, 2005 01:20 PMGive him a little money and try him at second base? Anyone remember the game he played there for the Red Sox? It's a thought...probably unrealistic, but hey...
