Dougie's Down! Jose Offerman's Up!

And I don't even know what year it is anymore. Doug Mientkiewicz tore his hamstring in the on deck circle yesterday (Who does he think he is, Corey Koskie?) and is going on the DL. The Mets have called up one Jose Offerman to take his place on the roster. Story here.

Says manager Willie Randolph, "Pull a muscle in the on-deck circle, how do you do that?"

(Thanks to Torhu and The Commish for the heads-up.)

Dearest Bat-Girl,

Curse this free speech and the New York Times asking question. Were we back in Soviet days, one could just release a statement saying that Doug is "now working for the Party" and that New York National League fans were directed to root for the glorious new First Baseman, Jose Offerman.

(P.S., How about a Soviet-style Pravda game recap?)

The first basemen for the Mets is and always has been Jose Offerman.

And Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia.

Aww, poor Dougie...as if things haven't been tough enough this season.

Posted by: bubblemint at June 27, 2005 12:01 PM

Jose isn't going to be first baseman, is he?
That does not bode well for Mets. Jose is a good DH/PH type, but his defense resembles LeCroy's.

Perhaps it's not as bad as I thought, Offerman's errors were mostly when he played second base, although he came up as a SS for the Dodgers.

Poor Dougie - huh - I guess Mr. Met was too busy to fill in -

Much love

The Corey Koskie reference made me laugh. But, poor Dougie. I wonder if the Mets fans will be happier with a mostly offensive, rather than a mostly defensive, first baseman.

(No, Jose isn't offensive. His skills are more in the offense category. Just covering my bases here.)

JustBeth, it seems to me that most Mets fans won't truly be happy either way.

I'd like to point out that I posted this news last night in the Batcave. When Dougie goes down... uh, GETS HURT, I am on the case.

Posted by: LaurieNY at June 27, 2005 03:34 PM

Dougie's on a little power binge with NINE homers this year! Whoo-hooo.

Now, along with keeping the World Series ball hostage, Dougie can now be the butt of national jokes about this injury, which ranks up there with ironing your shirt while wearing it.

I saw a guy with a Dougie shirt on at the Nats game yesterday in DC. It was a BOSOX Dougie shirt!

Dear Mr. Torhu,

Great concept! In addition to my humble request for a Pravda-style game recap, I now humbly request an Orwellian game recap.

"Jose is a good DH/PH type, but his defense resembles LeCroy's."

Mr. mr, you are clearly a very kind soul, at least to Jose. If I were Matthew, however, I'd be consulting counsel to prepare a libel case.

Dougie was just coming around. Had two HRs over this past weekend. Really a shame to see him go.

Posted by: Gary (Mets Fan) at June 27, 2005 05:30 PM

With Gary's comments, a very frightening notion comes to mind.

Doug's been on the DL only twice in his career. The situation this year is almost identical to last years.

1. Doug begins to turn season around.
2. Doug suffers unusual injury (last year hit by ball during BP/Fielding Practice)
3. Doug goes on DL. Call up is made.

All that's missing is:
4. Callup is offensively superior to Doug.
5. Doug is benched/traded.

The fact that it's a even a FORMER TWIN, and a former Twin that was with the team in that same situation LAST YEAR...makes it even more unusual.

I hope Doug recovers fast, I'd hate to see him get tossed around like he was last year.

With his luck, he'll be traded again, and wind up playing 2nd Base on occasional for Colorado or something while learning to be a catcher (stupid Boston) ;)
