Oh, hell. Is this really going to happen? Really? Is it? I've been over the numbers, crunching them through my BODomatic again and again, which must be broken because I was expecting Mauer or Castillo or Tyner or Cuddy for the sommersault--but no. Because everyone, including the BODomatic knows the BODSHC likes a good story--like, say, washed-up, bloated, boozy, beached journeyman pitcher with maybe one last shot to stick with the team before Matt Garza comes up and makes the AL hitters sorry they were ever born tokes up to the plate and pitches a seven-inning, one run game, earning himself a couple more starts and--believe you me, these are not words I ever thought I'd type--you, Sir Sidney Ponson, have your very first Boyfriend of the Day.
Don't look at me like that.
Goober/ Justin 5, Sooz/Cuddy 2, Readers/Field 3, Batgirl/Chairman 2, BabyDash/Bart 1, BatCub/Torii 1, Jeb/LNP 1.
Posted by Batgirl at May 1, 2007 10:50 PMNever thought that was going to happen!!!
Posted by: Dean at May 1, 2007 11:19 PMWhen I finally got to tune in halfway through the game and saw the score, I had to do a triple-take to make sure I wasn't accidentally inverting the score. Honest to God.
Good show, Ponson, good show.
Posted by: Dobs at May 1, 2007 11:33 PMIt's tough to hear that Ponson stole the BOD from one of the regulars like Mauer, Cuddyer, or my personal favorite JustIncredible Morneau, but I do have to admire good baseball when I see it...
Posted by: ranger23softball at May 1, 2007 11:54 PMThis must be one of the 7 Signs of the Apocalypse.
p.e.m.
Posted by: public enemy mike at May 2, 2007 12:04 AMSimply. Shocked.
Posted by: Brian at May 2, 2007 02:12 AMHoly crap, Batgirl. Did you figure the Greis-integer correctly? http://www.bat-girl.com/archives/000187.php
Did you carry your numbers right?
Hey, Jeb, if there's one can't question BatGirl about these days, it's "carrying" anything.
Posted by: BD at May 2, 2007 05:53 AMUuuuuurgh.
Well, statistically, a player can't suck *all* the time.
Posted by: CarrieICL at May 2, 2007 07:42 AMOh come on - the summersault the DJ Cuddles did should have at least counted for something?!?
I would have given him a perfect 10 had he stuck the landing but it was a little shakey so I can only give him a 9 =)
Much Love
Wonder Woman
Well, I couldn't have predicted this (KSTP, incidentally, picked "The former Devil Ray, Jason Tyner" as their star of the game, but I gotta agree, the BODSHC made the right choice.)
Incidentally, Garza is presently the third-best starter in the Rochester Rotation, which is led by Kevin Slowey. (Scott Baker is second.)
Posted by: JustBeth at May 2, 2007 08:10 AMSommersaults should only count for BOD points if you don't have to come out of the game to recover from them.
Congrats Sidney! Now that we all know you're capable of pitching well, we shall be expecting to see such performances on a regular basis!
Posted by: JimCrikket at May 2, 2007 08:13 AMGood choice on BOD. Seven innings one run is a win any day. By the way, I will never watch Sir Sidney pitch now without thinking of scary underpants. Thanks a lot, Batgirl!
Posted by: Jimmy J. at May 2, 2007 08:30 AM...and the devil just checked his thermostat, feeling a strong draft from the north...
Posted by: Eric at May 2, 2007 09:13 AMOh, Lord. This is unbelievable. UNBELIEVABLE. I'm stunned and slightly nauseated. But deep down, I know it's the right thing...and the BODSHC, she don't lie.
Posted by: Carmen at May 2, 2007 09:56 AMNo you di'nt!
Also, when it comes to acrobatics, Cuddyer is no Casilla.
Posted by: Roscoe at May 2, 2007 10:02 AMLike the rest of you, I'm still having a hard time believing Sid just won a BOD! Part of me is hoping this NEVER happens again...but part of me can't help but feel sorry for the guy. Gaaaah!
Posted by: Newton at May 2, 2007 10:25 AMCalled it! (In my mind, anyway.)
Hey, We want the other BODs to do well after being awarded. Why shouldn't Sir Sid have the same BOD benefits? After all, what's good for the goose is good for the Gossage.
Posted by: Piranhtachew at May 2, 2007 10:48 AM*befuddled* Where did all of these locusts come from? And, why are there four dudes riding down Hennepin on horses?
Posted by: Bring Back Reboulet at May 2, 2007 11:10 AMAs controversial as this may seem, I for one like the idea of positive reinforcement. Perhaps this will motivate future strong performances.
There'll be no bigger time than Sunday against Boston.
Posted by: Torhu at May 2, 2007 11:13 AMThat was a helluva game from Sir Sid. Now, hopefully he can perform like that without requiring a six-run lead.
Every time I am ready to completely and utterly write him off as hopeless, he has a game like last night's.
Posted by: FH at May 2, 2007 11:34 AMBBR...I love your use of befuddled. Great word! There's good befuddlement & bad, and this is definitely good. (Can I use the word befuddled as a noun?) The more I type it, the funnier it looks.
Posted by: Tricia at May 2, 2007 12:10 PMSorry BG, but I can't help looking at you like that.
Posted by: bubblemint at May 2, 2007 12:56 PMI just assumed I could beat Sidney to a B.O.D., but I'm glad I was wrong. You did the right (read: scary and weird and right) thing, BG.
And is it me, or is Joe C. devoting a ton of inches to make Scott Baker's case over MG and Slowey (I'll bring this up on his blog, too)? I think Joe is a helluva baseball writer and tells it like it is, but I feel like he's been going out of the way to emphasize Slowey's inexperience and Garza's 20 hits-against and ASTRONOMICAL 2.84 ERA. (Incidentally, I will be equally pleased with whomever of the three is called. But it IS really fun to watch MG pitch.)
Posted by: MO at May 2, 2007 03:32 PMDidn't Torii Hunter say something a while back having to do with even a blind squirrel gets a nut some days?
It was the right thing to do.
And maybe the positive reinforcement Torhu mentioned is on the right track.
Are the granny panties kept at the name place that nutty used to be?
My son the Os fan has warned me all year--just when you think its time to dump Sir Sidney--he will pitch well once--then he will return to form. Sir Sidney did this for years with the Os. But BG--giving him the BOD possibly could change it.
BTW: Wheres the legovision of Cuddys somersault--it must be here somewhere cause nobody is begging for it.

Posted by: DAM-DC Twins Fan at May 2, 2007 04:31 PMWhy does everyone gotta hate on Sidney? He plays for our team. We don't want him to suck.
Posted by: Donnalove at May 2, 2007 08:10 PMSometimes stories just write themselves. Who's got the movie rights? Disney?
Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at May 2, 2007 09:47 PMHey, thank Tricia. I also like bewildered and beleagured!
