Scattered Notes on a Chilly Series

Twins at Chicago
4/7: Twins 0, Whine Sox 3
4/8: Twins 3, Whine Sox 1

Infield has been brought in to pinch-blog for Batgirl, as BG is entirely occupied trying to prevent Baby Dash from running up a monumental long distance bill while romancing Riley Grace Nathan.

It was a long, cold weekend in Chicago. The game was canceled Friday, on account of the glacier encroaching on right field, but intrepid ground crews imported from Canada attacked with blowtorches and boiling water and managed to drive it back into the stands in time for Saturday's afternoon start.

Some comments on the abbreviated series...

  • Mark your calendars for July 6th, on which date the Twins and Sox will play a doubleheader to make up for Friday's missed game.
  • Sir Sidney, who was scheduled to pitch on Friday, will instead be making his first appearance in a Twins uniform on Monday in Minnesota, versus the Bankees.
  • Silva started a game, and neither the world nor the season came to an unfortunate end. (Yes, infield was a little surprised, too.) In fact, he gave up only one run in 5 innings of work, despite getting into a couple of jams.
  • Rondell White apparently pulled a calf muscle during pre-game workouts while skipping onto the field. Sometimes truth is funnier than BatGirl.
  • Sunday, after a frantic locker room search between the second and third innings, Santana found his control in his locker, underneath his spare glove.
"Whew," Johan was overheard to say, "I was starting to think I'd left it in the Dome. God only knows what the Gophers football team would have done with it."
  • Is infield the only one who found the GameDay picture of Sox reliever David Aardsma a wee bit disturbing? Something about that psychotic-clown grin...

  • And finally, some sassy stats:
    • The Twins are on pace to go 130-32 on the season.
    • Justin Morneau is on pace to hit 65 homers.
    • Johan Santana is on pace to accumulate 240 strikeouts and (less sassily) 80 walks.
    • Jason Tyner is on pace to steal 65 bases--33 of them on his knees.

Our boys are on their way home to face the Bankees and the Rays for three and four games, respectively. Rumor has it that on Sunday, the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's major league debut, Torii Hunter will not only be wearing the number 42 (by special permission of the commissioner), but he will be also be wearing his socks the right way. Bring your cameras!

::Fears for Twins' hitters.:: :0

Warning next time, infield?

Tiny Supes must've mixed Doc's Slurpee in a *Northside* Seven-Eleven. ;)

I was watching an Indians vs. ChiSox game on Gameday on my laptop in bed the other day when I saw that picture of Aardsma. I screamed and pulled the blankets over my head. He's got a bit of a scary clown vibe goin' in that picture, it's true.

By sabermetric figuring, the Twins will only win 117 games. I'll settle for that less optimistic projection.

So if one UW-Madison girl taking summer classes decided to take a road trip to Chicago to see the Twins play the Bitchsox in July... would she be able to see both games of that double header?

Maybe Jackie Robinson will be channeled through Mr. Sweetcheeks during that game... strike outs? No. Grounded-into-double-play? NOOOO.

*snort* Knees.
Oh my God that picture is awefull!
"skipping onto the field. Sometimes truth is funnier than BatGirl." How true.
Oh, and from twinsbaseball.com,

//Multiple 42s: It won't just be Torii Hunter who will don the No. 42 next Sunday, when the league honors the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's Major League debut.

White and first-base coach Jerry White will also take part in the celebration. The league made the decision to allow multiple players and coaches on each club to wear the retired number in honor of the event.

"That's a great honor," White said. "I was honored that Gardy called me in and asked me if I wanted to wear it. I want to make sure I get to keep that jersey, too."//

So the question(s) is/are will White be wearing his socks the right way? and will White be wearing his socks the right way?

Also from twinsbaseball.com,
"I have something for him next time," Guillen said of Santana after Sunday's spotless outing. "I'm going to call my mom in Venezuela to come here and cook for him. She'll poison him. My mom is a bad cook and if Santana eats my mom's cooking, he will have trouble pitching."

I went to Chicago for the game on Friday. I'm a little bitter. I think I saw Paul Konerko at a sports bar, but it may have been someone just wearing his jersey.

Will someone buy Boo a guide to sleeping properly - it seems that he tweaked his neck by sleeping the 'wrong' way so he said in the paper Sunday. He does this a lot.

Good Luck tonight Mr. Ponson -

It may be summer in Chicago in time for that doubleheader in July.

But having recently booked an airline flight and hotel for the Twins/Offensive Cartoons series at The Jake from May 15-17, my greater hope is that it will (please, please, please) be spring (loosely defined as sunshine, flowers, temperatures above freezing on the Fahrenheit scale and, above all, no Bertin' snow!) in Cleveland by then.

Aardsma's pic is DEFINITELY freaky. O.O

BG -

As for Young Dash's phone bill: The flat-rate $50 plan from Verizon (all domestic long-distance included) is really quite useful.

Sadly, for those weekends when the telephone just won't do - no direct flights. Which means Dash will need a chaperone to change planes in Detroit ...

Does anyone know if the game on XM tonight will have the Yankees' announcers or the Twins announcers ?

The season is only 5 games old and I am already tired of listening to Suzyn Waldman. Who are the Twins radio people and are they any good ?

p.e.m.

PEM,
John Gordon and Danny Gladden.
I like them. But not everyone does.

Posted by: twin-X at April 9, 2007 12:43 PM

PEM,

The main broadcast team is Dan Gladden and John Gordon. Jack Morris and Kris Atteberry also contribute to most broadcasts. IMO, Atteberry's the best of the lot (those of you who heard him when he was the star broadcaster for the St. Paul Saints know what I'm talking about!), but he doesn't get much air time. Morris is usually entertaining, but again, not much air time.

As far as the big team, Gladden's pretty good, and Gordo's not too bad when he can be kept on topic. He tends to ramble. A lot. Gladden has gotten pretty good at reining him in over the last year, though--you'll rarely miss more than one at-bat to Gordo's digressions these days.

I see the Cleveland-Angels series is going to played in Milwaukee - it just wont stop snowing in Cleveland!

I hope the powers that be are watching and reconsider a retractable roof - not that I would mind sitting outside on a cool day in October - but it does make it hard to catch a fly ball in five inches of snow =)

Much love

And if we can't have 162-0, let's at least try for 161-1.

I don't know if it makes that picture any funnier, but Aardsma was the badass reliever for my alma mater the year we won the CWS and the school's first national championship in anything. All during that tournament, any time Aardsma was pitching the focus of the announcers and the rest of the TV crew would cut away from the game and to David Aardsma's Sister, who was always in the stands and fairly fetching. If the ESPN television folks had their way, that freaky picture of Aardsma would probably be covered up by a picture of a blonde, cheering David Aardsma's Sister, Hottest Chick-style.

Hey, I like Suzyn. I mean, as long as she doesn't talk too much.
Dang, Pavano is playing like an actual MLB player this evening.

Posted by: Slider Away at April 9, 2007 07:15 PM

Here's a taste of how long Pavano has been out. MLB.com was auctioning a game used hat by Pavano. On eBay, I found the same hat listed under "antiques".

Wow that stunk.

I dunno, when I think Knees, I think Torgo. But maybe that's just me.
