We're With You, Big Fella

Team Batgirl sends their thoughts to assistant clubhouse manager Wayne Hattaway who goes in for cancer surgery on Thursday. Some of the media has been referring to it obliquely as chest cancer, and this seems oddly circumspect. He has breast cancer, and it's important to make known that men can get it too. (In this case, information can actually save lives.) Here's a terrific article from Reusse about Hattaway, and here's a terrific profile of him from Brad Zellar. To send messages to Hattway:

My thoughts and prayers are with him and I'm definitely sending a card!

I have heard Dick and Bert refer to it as breast cancer several times in the last week or so. Even though I know men can get breast cancer, I thought I heard it wrong at first.I will give them credit for making that point. As for the others (had not heard it, but not doubting what you are telling us)calling it "chest cancer"-that is just stupid.
Thanks for the link.

I didn't know men could get breast cancer, so there's just a little bit of extra, potentially life-saving, information getting out there as a result of all this.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Wayne and his family though

Best wishes to Wayne, that everything turns out well. It's nice to have real characters in our clubhouse, and he's one of them.

I was so glad that they had him out on the field last night for the ceremonial pitch - you could just see what a connection he has with all our guys.

Best of luck to you Wayne and my prayers are with you and your family.

BG: Thnx for the links--until this last week I had always wondered who the guy with the stash and glasses was...I agree with Capital Babs--it was great they showed the replay of Wayne throwing the first pitch and the reaction of the Twins players.

best wishes for the Big Fellah.

and Brad Z's piece on him is outstanding. Clearly due to Brad's southern Minny upbringing :-)

I have one last wish for this season - that Big Fella gets a World Series share.

All the best to Wayne for a speedy recovery.

The Zellar article is a must. I wonder if Wayne ever got his revenge on A.J. and Dougie.

My best wishes to the Big Fella.

Best part of Big Fella's first pitch last night was that the catcher (Redmond? couldn't tell from where I was sitting) came out in front of the plate to shorten the throw for Wayne. Nope - Wayne waved him back until he was back in the catcher's box. And he threw it to him on the fly! Nice moment!

//All's well: Longtime Twins clubhouse attendant Wayne "Big Fella" Hattaway underwent outpatient surgery on Thursday morning to remove the cancerous growth on his chest and the news after the surgery was all good.

Gardenhire said that everything went as scheduled with the lump being successfully removed and Hattaway is now resting comfortably at home.

Doctors removed some lymph nodes and sent them in to be tested as well. Results of those tests are expected within the next week.

Hattaway normally travels with the Twins on every road trip but it is still uncertain whether he will make the journey for the first round of the playoffs.// From twinsbaseball.com

Good news,
best of luck, big fella.

It's times like these that make you realize what a person really does mean to you.. when there's the chance you may never get to share another telephone conversation, a dinner at Cheesecake Factory in Boston, a fun time in the clubhouse in FL and MN, having you here in NY to celebrate my birthday... it was a wakeup call for sure... Wayne, you KNOW Kayla and I love you VERY, VERY much.. and we want you in our lives for many years to come! See you in November, Big Fella!! xoxo ~Sharon
