The Sweetness of Sweetcheeks: a Reenactment

Detroit at Twins. Weekend Round-Up.
Thursday. Ligers 7, Twins 2.
Friday. Twins 9, Ligers 5.
Saturday. Twins 2, Ligers 1.
Sunday. Twins 12, Ligers 1.

Oh, my dears. Batgirl is so happy right now she can barely speak. Two games out. A game and a half in the wild card lead. Wins! Bats, bats, bats, triples (which are, as you may know, hott), defense--and Johan Santana, triple crown winner? Cy Young? MVP? There was so much to love this weekend, Batgirl can do nothing but throw her arms around the world--and not in a dysfunctional, U2 kind of way, but in the-whole-world-is-Johan-Santana-and-maybe-I-can-get-a-squeeze-of-bicep-way. There was so much damned hustle and heart and all the things we love about Twins baseball, including Torii "Gimp" Hunter singlehandedly creating a run in the second inning today. You missed it? Oh, that's terrible! Well, as a service to her readers, Batgirl presents a reenactment, using Legos.

Please note: the Spiderman Lego who used to play Torii Hunter has gotten a little uppity in his demands, and he was replaced with a more humble Lego actor. There's no "I" in Legovision.

liger1.jpg
It's the bottom of the second. One out. Torii Hunter at the plate.

liger2.jpg
Jeremy Bonderman has one strike against Hunter.

liger3.jpg
Torii rears back and...

liger4.jpg
...hits it up the middle. Base hit!

liger5.jpg
With Torii on first, Jason Kubel comes to the plate. Bonderman pitches. Boy, that's a high leg kick!

liger6.jpg
Hunter's going for the steal!

liger7.jpg
SAFE!

liger8.jpg
Strike three! But the ball bounces past the catcher.

liger9.jpg
Kubel hustles down the line as Wilson prepares to throw to first. ...What's that look in Torii's eye?

liger10.jpg
It's the spark of hustle! Torii breaks for third!

liger11.jpg
Wilson's throw to first was slow, the relay across the diamond not in time!

liger12.jpg
Torii looks into the Twins' dugout and claps. I'm a piranha too!

liger13.jpg
Tyner comes to the plate. Surely he can lend Torii a hand...

liger14.jpg
Oh well, it's just a foul pop to shallow left...Monroe will catch it easily.

liger15.jpg
What?? Torii breaks for home!

liger16.jpg
Shocked at Hunter's gall, Monroe throws wildly.

liger17.jpg
Torii scores!! ...Two runs: more than enough for Johan K. Santana, president of the United States of Batgirl.

liger18.jpg
The dugout celebrates! Twins are going to WIN!

YAY! What a great moment to bring to life with Legovision! What a day this has been! What a perfectly wonderful day! Who else got a kick out of El Presidente cheering for his team in the latter innings?!

Posted by: Newton at September 10, 2006 10:19 PM

I second that thought, Newton! It was great to watch the small ball piranhas in action! And that steal by Joe, he was totally ahead of the tag, @$$#o!e 2nd base ump...

*squeals with delight at Legovision*

I completely missed the game this afternoon. Thanks for telling me what happened, BG. It's almost like I was there!

Posted by: Rach at September 10, 2006 10:34 PM

Awesome!

Posted by: E-6 at September 10, 2006 10:38 PM

Couple more days like this and I won't need the shrink I had to hire in early May...

Posted by: TwinsFoghorn at September 10, 2006 10:40 PM

Wow. that was some amazing replay! and the game was awesome, too. wouldn't mind seeing that again.

is anyone else having trouble playing the twins fantasy football draft? mine won't start playing...

Posted by: Hannah! at September 10, 2006 10:48 PM

One would think that with a role this entertaining and crucial, Spiderman Lego would have been willing to pay you. I mean... how many Legos even get to be in any LegoVision recaps, much less one where he (it?) would get to be this dominant and dynamics?

 Actors.

Posted by: neutrino boi at September 10, 2006 10:48 PM

I have a feeling that the Spider-Man Lego demanded some sort of vehicle to take him to the set of the reenactment and that Bat-Girl just wouldn't give in.

He probably wanted somthing outragous--along the lines of a limo, or a personal jet, or to be packed with all the other legos and then put in the back of a moving truck to take him from Minnesota to Boston-- something like that.

(Thanks for the great posts Bat-Girl-- I read every day)

Posted by: Kyle at September 10, 2006 11:09 PM

okay, now that i've seen the video, i find it hysterical!!

Posted by: Hannah! at September 10, 2006 11:20 PM

I think you better keep the Legos handy. We will need a reenactment of Shaggy's first MLB win on Tuesday as he makes his first start of the year.

Posted by: Shaun at September 10, 2006 11:21 PM

Hooray for Legovision!

You haven't lived until you've managed to call up your MLB.TV subscription on a hotel computer that does NOT have speakers. The "silent" game I viewed was Saturday night's outing. But I guess "silent" really isn't the right descriptor because, boy, was I ever cheering our guys on.

Good thing I was the only geek in the business center that night...

Posted by: JetChick at September 10, 2006 11:29 PM

How tough is it, exactly, to get a Legovision photo with that Lego "ball" in the air? Because it looks like it would be really, really tough.

Posted by: Roscoe at September 11, 2006 12:19 AM

I mean my spelling is awful and everything (blame a great 70's teaching idea called Initial Teaching Alphabet that left half a generation of English kids unable to spell) but I'm pretty sure there is an i in Legovision, two i's in fact, which gives free rein to all kinds of prima donna's.

here's a more sensible thought; isn't the wild card great. The Twins are going to catch the Tigers but at the point when they got (really) good they were too far back to realisitically have a shot, but they could still go for the wild card, kept going and there they are, division title in sight. Wild Cards give hope and hope leads to all kinds of wonderfullness

Posted by: dan in london at September 11, 2006 02:46 AM

That was the winning run, of course, but the Twins scored another 10 just to make the Ligers feel bad.

Posted by: Kurtis at September 11, 2006 06:02 AM

Nicely done. Legovision makes the world a happier place. I feel compelled to point out, however, that despite Johan Santana's overpowering greatness and continued schooling of the Sox, Jon Garland still has more wins in the last two years than any other pitcher in baseball.

[Just to clarify: Johan doesn't just school the Sox.
Helpfully,
Jeb]

Posted by: Shortstop at September 11, 2006 06:27 AM

I will mention run support as being part of wins. And that Bartolo Colon was not a better pitcher then Johan just because he had more wins last year. Wins to me esp. what happened to Santana last year seems to not prove who is the best pitcher.

Posted by: Nora at September 11, 2006 06:38 AM

Jlubby and I were there. That was a fan-fuckin'-tastic game. And the Twins have a little Piranhas graphic now for the away boards -- the other teams logo being nibbled away by piranhas in Twins caps! It was awesome!

BG, quick question -- why hasn't the Legovision Archive been updated this year? Are you waiting until the end of the year? No pestering, I'm just idly curious.

Posted by: CarrieICL at September 11, 2006 07:12 AM

Awesome! If you missed it live it's up at mlb.com.

New-legoviisiion Torii obviously did not want anyone to acuse him of bat-flipping so he carried it around the bases with him!

Extra kewl. ;-)

Posted by: jamar1700 at September 11, 2006 08:09 AM

Joe looked like he was so disappointed in himself when he was called out at second. Poor kid.

Posted by: Erin at September 11, 2006 08:28 AM

"I'm a piranha too!"

Ha ha ha... yes, Torii, you are indeed.

And can I just say for the record that I love Johan Santana so much it hurts me? Because seriously. I do.

Posted by: TwinsGoddess at September 11, 2006 08:45 AM

Torii Hunter is looking great. He is "the spark of hustle." My guru Dan Gladden says it doesn't take talent to hustle. But it doesn't hurt, I suppose. Nor does it hurt to be handsome.

Posted by: nailbiter at September 11, 2006 08:47 AM

The video worked for me. The Veep is super cute. :) Almost as cute as the idea of Joey talking trash. *snicker*

Posted by: wc at September 11, 2006 09:15 AM

"I'm a piranha too!"

*sigh* It's that warm, fuzzy...like season 7 of Buffy when all the little girls of the world find out they have a little bit of slayer in them...

Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at September 11, 2006 09:24 AM

I was there! It was such a great game! Almost as good in person as in Legovision. Our boys hit and hustled and did those Tigers in! I bow in Twins adoration!

Yes there are two i in Legovision, but there is no I.

Posted by: kate at September 11, 2006 09:42 AM

I watched the Fantsay football draft video and i Demand to know who took a Kicker before the last round!

Posted by: Paul at September 11, 2006 10:00 AM

Ok, Garland has 1 more win than Santana in the past two years, but his offense scored 6.76 runs per game as opposed to Santana's 5.25, and that's just this year alone. I think we all know how many runs the weak hitting Twins scored for him last year.

But Garland is definitely the best pitcher... for the white sox :-)

Posted by: gina at September 11, 2006 10:30 AM

Hey, does anyone know when rookie dress up day is? Can't wait to see Neshek in a pink dress of some sort!

Posted by: gina at September 11, 2006 11:15 AM

Brilliant! Legovision rules!

Posted by: Gus at September 11, 2006 11:31 AM

Gina,

I think the rookie hazing day is ususally the get-away day for the last road trip. Which would put it this very Wednesday. I think.

Yeah, Boof in go-go boots. Heh heh.

k-bro

Posted by: k-bro at September 11, 2006 11:35 AM

Oh man I completely forgot about Boof! That is going to be hilarious! I hope someone takes lots of pictures. Who is the mastermind behind all of the costumes for the Twins? I bet it's Silva, or Juany.

Posted by: gina at September 11, 2006 11:43 AM

Sweet, I love LEGOs!

Posted by: Twin-X at September 11, 2006 11:54 AM

Very interesting story on Ortiz. I have to say I agree with a lot of his points esp. about Jeter. But if you're gonna promote a player for the MVP who isn't in a playoff race, you cannot forget about Hafner. Hafner has the best offensive numbers in almost every category even though his season is over and sadly no one is talking about him in the MVP race.

Posted by: gina at September 11, 2006 12:29 PM

Oh, my poppy just surprised me with a Smell 'Em t-shirt. I'm pretty amped about it. That must mean he's got plans for another road trip to the Metrodome. Excellent.

Posted by: Erin at September 11, 2006 01:07 PM

Jeb-
I totally agree, Johan owns everyone. But I am a Sox fan and I wanted to make it clear that I respect Johan, and all the Twins players, for that matter, before delving into the murky waters of commenting on a rival team's website.

Ahhh, Legovision. Just what I needed. Brilliant.

Alright, Silva. I know you have it in you. (Though I am hoping the intestinal vexation is NOT in you tonight.) Go forth and kick ass.

Posted by: Carmen at September 11, 2006 02:33 PM

I LOVED the video. Justin Morneau!!! He's soo HOTT!!!

Posted by: Melissa at September 11, 2006 03:40 PM

I was at the game--just a Perfect Baseball Experience. One funny thing about Torii's hustle was that several casual, bandwagon fans behind us couldn't believe that a runner could tag up on a foul ball. One guy even pulled out his cell phone and called a friend to ask if it was legal (as though seeing it with his own eyes wasn't proof?!) Still I have to admit that I wasn't sure how to score Torrii's advance to third. I settled on Fielder's Choice, though I don't think Wilson realized he had a choice until after Torii started running. What a great play. (There are two ii's in Torii).

Posted by: Gus at September 11, 2006 04:40 PM

HA! I love the phone-a-friend option.

Posted by: Carmen at September 11, 2006 04:44 PM

Now I won't be able to rest until I find out how to play extreme cribbage.

Posted by: Word Smith at September 11, 2006 05:02 PM

BG,

I can't believe you lost the spiderman legoman!

Love Legovision,

LTLC

Posted by: likeTwinsluvCubs at September 11, 2006 05:08 PM

Gus-

I was wondering the same thing about Torii's advance. It would appear that the play-by-play people doing online box scored didn't either. The play-by-play (link in my name, look at the 2nd inning) game summary at Yahoo Sports never shows him advancing to third. It makes it look like he scored from second on Tyners foul ball, which would be even more impressive.

BG-
the legovision reenactment was exactly like I remember it from the game. Right down to Brent "Who?" Clevlen playing centerfield with a crossbow.

It was the only game I made it to this season, and boy did I pick a good one!

Posted by: pab at September 11, 2006 05:10 PM

Welcome back Cisco! I'm about as excited about this as I am about Santana's next start!

Posted by: Bob at September 11, 2006 06:46 PM

The quote of the day actually belongs to Ozzie:

''When you're a pitcher and don't throw strikes, you're going to get whacked."

His pitchers thought he was speaking metaphorically until he reached for the .32 revolver and gave each of yesterday's Ninth Inning Six a big kiss on the cheek.

I don't know if anyone has already posted this, but Justin and Joe are going to be on ESPNews Hotlist tomorrow at 3:30 ct.

Posted by: Melissa at September 11, 2006 08:49 PM

Oh joy! I felt so bad I didn't get to see my BF's steal and when finally after a long day log on to -double joy- Lego reenactment.
Thanks BG. You made my day.

Happily, I have great, awesome, wonderful friends who gave me a seat at Sunday's game, so I got to see the whole beautiful thing. I'm an old fart and I love old time, small ball. And Torii's baserunning in that inning had me apoplectic with happiness. Thanks, BG, for a great replay!! Of course, I also like great pitching, and Santana's 10-pitch inning was loveliness and beauty personified. You could really see the shift when he went into that 'zone' where his pitches become surgical strikes. My friend Amy (she and her husband are the season ticket holders who gave me my seat) said that prior to that, Santana walked off the mound and stared down the homeplate ump all the way to the dugout. Game over!
