B.O.D.

Ahhhhh.

With all love to Scootie, who pitched five very good innings and helped soothe the souls of anxiety-laden Twins fans everywhere, not to mention Sweetcheeks who took out his bum ankle frustrations on the baseball, this one goes to the good Doctor--who saw our offensive pain, wrote out a prescription, and hit that prescription all the way the hell out of the ballpark to give the Twins breathing room, not to mention got some serious payback, (which is, I'm told, a bitch) and that's why you, Mrneau, are the Boyfriend of the Day.

Yay for the Good Doctor!

Hooray for the Doctor, who cures the assbats with one swing.

Posted by: Spacey Stacey at September 2, 2006 03:43 PM

OK I missed the game cuz I was at the Iowa football game and had to just follow along via the web browser on my cell phone... but heres my question... why wasnt the final score 2-1? I guess I assumed that if the Yankees didnt get to finish their half of the 8th, they roll back to the score at the end of the prior full inning completed. That would have cost the Doc his HR of course. Just doesnt seem "right" to allow one team an additional at bat without the home team having the opportunity to finish their half of that inning. Maybe that doesnt matter if the visiting team had the lead after the prior inning anyway. I dunno.

Posted by: JimCrikket at September 2, 2006 03:49 PM

Dear Mr. Ron Villone,

Payback is so incredibly sweet.

Love,
Justin Morneau. (And all Twins fans everywhere.)

(Ironically enough, as I'm typing this, Back In Black comes up on my iTunes. Whoo!)

Posted by: Candace at September 2, 2006 03:52 PM

If I had to guess JC, since the Twins completed the top half you can't just erase what they did. The umps can choose to call the game at any point, and after 5 full innings the game is official at that point.

Posted by: Shaun at September 2, 2006 03:54 PM

The Crew Chief shall be the sole judge as to whether and when play shall be suspended during a game because of unsuitable weather conditions or the unfit condition of the playing field; as to whether and when the play shall be resumed after such suspension; and as to whether and when a game shall be terminated after such suspension. He shall not call the game until at least 30 minutes after he has suspended play. He may continue the suspension as long as he believes there is any chance to resume play. The Crew Chief shall at all times try to complete a game. His authority to resume play following one or more suspensions of as much as 30 minutes each shall be absolute and he shall terminate a game only when there appears to be no possibility of completing it.

You don't undo things that happened in a game in terms of weather unless the game didn't complete 5 full innings.

As for "fairness," the umps weren't going to wait hours to let the Yankees get their at bats in to make it even.

Posted by: shaun at September 2, 2006 03:58 PM

The rule is: If the Twins had taken the lead with their scoring binge in the top of the 8th, making it unfair that the Yankees didn't have a chance to respond, then the game would be suspended and resumed later, presumably before tomorrow's game.

Since they were already in the lead, the game ends at the moment it was suspended.

Posted by: JonR at September 2, 2006 03:59 PM

Yankees lose. And Scootie strikes out Jeter with two guys on base. Ahh.

Posted by: Jeb at September 2, 2006 04:00 PM

Thanks JonR... that makes some sense.

Posted by: JimCrikket at September 2, 2006 04:01 PM

Glad to hear that Nutty made a successful return to the Show.

Posted by: JimCrikket at September 2, 2006 04:05 PM

I had the same puzzlement too JC. Thanks Jon R. and Shaun.

Posted by: Linda at September 2, 2006 04:15 PM

OK, I feel better now after seeing JonR's explanation. Not that the Twins wouldn't have won this one anyway with that smoking hot bullpen in action, but had the score been a bit different (say, being in the Yanks favor rather than the Twins at the end of the 7th), I'd feel a bit--dare I say bad?--about the win. Knowing that the umps called the game with the understanding that the Twins were decidedly in the lead regardless of offensive opportunities for both teams definitely sets my idealistic heart at ease.

Posted by: Spacey Stacey at September 2, 2006 04:23 PM

I begged the guy who caught the Morneau HR ball to give me the ball but he threw it back onto the field. This game was great, not only because the Twins won, but also because I was sitting next to some of the nicest Yankee fans, (yes they do exist) who talked about how they always root for the Twins when they're not playing the Yankees.

Posted by: g at September 2, 2006 04:26 PM

Nice Yankee fans? Hard to imagine :)

Time to become a Royals fan for the rest of the day.

Posted by: JimCrikket at September 2, 2006 04:30 PM

Scootie just gained a few points in my book by striking out my least favorite baseball player of ALL TIME. Yes, Derek Jeter, I'm talking about YOU and you're pretty-boy, look-at-me-I'm-Derek-Jeter ego problem. Ahh...revenge is a dish best served cold, and I'd say that both that strikeout and Dr. Morneau's homerun were icy-cool.

Posted by: TwinsPrincess at September 2, 2006 04:54 PM

Was I hearing things, or did it sound like some Twins fans started up an "MVP" chant after Morneau hit that homerun?

Posted by: Roscoe at September 2, 2006 05:04 PM

I did!

Posted by: g at September 2, 2006 05:22 PM

It was probably drowned out by the yankee boos

Posted by: g at September 2, 2006 05:23 PM

MAD props to baker. maybe we should consider only starting him against the yankees cause he really has their number. I'm thinking he can start games 1, 4, and 7 of a long series.

Posted by: Dave at September 2, 2006 05:24 PM

Yes, Roscoe, we heard that too!!!
That homerun was amazing. I was expecting a double to the corner but that line drive just went out of the park.

Anyone else go crazy listening to Bert sayng Scootie had a good but not great outing because they didn't trot him out for the 6th? With Reyes ptiching to all the lefties it was clearly part of Gardy's startegy but Bert just kept going on and on about how he should have pitched another inning, that what the bullpen needed, blah, blah, blah. I usually like Bert, but he needs Dick to keep him in line.

Posted by: PJStP at September 2, 2006 05:26 PM

dunno, wasn't Scooty's pitch count kinda high? I think it was 87.

Posted by: billhedrick at September 2, 2006 05:52 PM

PJStP: Bert has stopped doing his homework this year and is relying on comedy and bits of information. I'm not a big Roy Smalley fan, but there's such a difference in approach between the two, and Roy can make a point and back it up.

And you're totally right about needing Dick in the booth. Anthony NoPantsOn either tries to one-up Bert on the comedy front or contribute his own mindless blather, like being surprised that Reyes was pitching to A-Rod with 2 out and nobody on. If he'd looked at his scorecard, he would have known there were more lefties to come in the 7th.

There has to be someone that FSN can call upon to step in for Dick right now who can almost equal what Dick brings to the telecasts. That neither of them recalled Morneau's beaning by Villone last season was amazing. I know we all like to pick nits with the print media, especially when they are mean to the boys, but I suspect we'll be reading about Morneau's revenge in the Sunday papers.

In the meantime, ring up a victory for the Bloggers over the MSM for getting that news into the public domain first.

And score a grand slam for Wikipedia for THIS first draft of history. Go here:

thanks for the link, RD.

Wow, "...one of the top Canadian first basemen of all time". Pretty impressive sounding. Of course, "...one of the top Saudi Arabian alpine skiers of all time", sounds pretty impressive too. :)

Posted by: JimCrikket at September 2, 2006 06:16 PM

STrib had a mention that Nevin actually called Gardy Thursday morning to let him know he'd be interested in playing for the Twins. A few hours later, he was heading for NYC to join the club.

Gosh. If I'd known that all it took was a phone call, I'd have called Gardy myself.. or TK...or any of a number of Twins managers going back to Billy Martin.

Posted by: JimCrikket at September 2, 2006 06:22 PM

i am so proud of them. i am finally all moved into my dorm room and am THRILLED to say that i have tickets to the twins/sox game on the 19th behind our bullpen. YAY!

Posted by: Elle at September 2, 2006 06:36 PM

I've been forced to enjoy the Twins solely on radio. What happened to Dick?

Posted by: arcolala at September 2, 2006 06:54 PM

Dick's mom is ill. He missed a couple of games last week too.

Posted by: RonDavis at September 2, 2006 07:07 PM

I was praying for todays deluge in the 4th inning last night... Ugly day for a game, but the results were beautiful.

Now let's see if Garza can continue our rookie starters impressive run of starts--and our line-up can spot him some early runs. I'm saying they can. (I'm also rocking a 101 fever, so I might just be delirious.)

Posted by: E-6 at September 2, 2006 07:54 PM

Anyway - YAY- TWins win

Posted by: Wonder Woman at September 2, 2006 10:44 PM

It was awesome to hear the chants of "MVP" after Morneau hit that homerun (especially since earlier the Yankee fans were doing that chant for Jeter).

I'd hoped when Dick was back doing games that it meant his Mom was doing better, but I guess he was doing them 'cuz the Twins were back home (and his Mom is in Minnesota). Really miss him and wish him and his family the best.

Thank God it was Roy Smalley filling in for Bert when he was gone and not Ron "Coomdawg" Coomer (we can't be the only household that mutes the TV whenever he's on, can we?).

Posted by: Laurel at September 2, 2006 11:15 PM

Tell more about Justin's potty mouth. Was it in the dugout? Was he cursing out that $#!+#%@) Villone?

I am missing Dick too. He and Bert compliment each other so well. They usually do not sound scripted or battle of the egos.Even the corny jokes are amusing most of the time.

Good game too :-)

Posted by: Twin-X at September 3, 2006 12:26 AM

Oh, and if I was on that AAA team that gets to face him, in the play offs I would be singing the "Why me" song.

Posted by: Twin-X at September 3, 2006 12:28 AM

I think there was a time when, in yesterday's situation, the score did revert back to what it was at the end of the previous inning, and Justin would have lost his 3run homer. While a win is a win, I wanted that H.r. for him, as he has not hit a lot recently, and the club has gone 7-11 at home after opening at 37-11. This has been caused mostly by lack of hitting as in the case of Mr. Mauer, who was at .394 in early June, after going 9 for ten in 2 games. He has grounded out to 2nd 106 times in the last 70 games, which is above average. Nicky is in danger of dropping below .300 which is unimaginable: Nicky punto below .300? preposterous.Al

Posted by: al mayer at September 3, 2006 07:57 AM

It did not revert back because Twins were already in the lead at the time so either way the Twins would win.

Posted by: Nora at September 3, 2006 08:04 AM

Nora,as I said "a win is a win", but under the "old" rule, the road team's "extra" 1/2 inning would be wiped out, and they would have won 2-1 not 6-1. My worry was not for the victory, but for the PHD's home run. Al

Thanks RD.
The above is a link to Souhans column regarding Morneau and his revenge. Here's hoping Bert reads it and is a tad better informed. Maybe he can fit it in between reminding us how many days until his birthday and, in a related story, his California math schooling.

Posted by: PJStP at September 3, 2006 08:44 AM

I miss Ted Robinson and Jim Kaat. A lot.

Posted by: E-6 at September 3, 2006 08:54 AM

Sort of completes the circle if Francisco pitches for the Red Wings in the AAA post-season. After all they've given the big club this year...they deserve it.

Posted by: jamar1700 at September 3, 2006 09:40 AM

E-6, So do I. One of the reasons I watch the U.S. Open tennis tournament on USA is to listen to Ted, who is one of the best. He's the model for broadcasters doing their homework.

PJSt.P, The Bert lowlight for me came in July when the Giants traded for Shea Hillenbrand, who'd dissed his manager in Toronto, and Bert was talking about the chances of picking him up two days after the trade. Dick tried to be as gentle as he could in telling him about the deal, and then Bert said something lame about not reading the papers. That, in addition to the tiresome birthday gimmick, should be enough to get someone thinking about a better baseball partner for Dick.

Posted by: RonDavis at September 3, 2006 11:08 AM

E6:

Jim Kaat was doing the Yankee game on YES--along with Al Leiter. MLB Extra Innings decides I get the Yanks feed. Anyway, he didnt mention the beaning last year either. I was surprised. I thought I saw Morneau say something to Villone. I wonder what will happen next time they face each other.

Posted by: Roscoe at September 3, 2006 12:05 PM

Great point, jamar. Rochester deserves a little thank you for all they've done for us this season!

"And unto thee, Rochester, for your Jasons and for your starting pitchers, we bestow the power of The Franchise. May his presence inspire you, may his pitches sit down all your opponents in shame, and may you enjoy having him in your lineup while you can, because we won't let you keep him!"

I cannot tell you how happy I was that I went to the Saturday game instead of the Friday nighter.

Posted by: Wolfpackman at September 3, 2006 12:06 PM

I wonder if Bert's pottymouth is what my dad started howling at all of a sudden. Well grrr, this is what happens when Andre Agassi is fighting to stay alive in the second set at the same time as the Twins are on.

Posted by: Spacey Stacey at September 3, 2006 12:09 PM

Roscoe or Pat,

Can you provide the effin' quotes of what Bert said? :)

RD

Posted by: RonDavis at September 3, 2006 12:31 PM

Bert: "We're gonna have to f***ing do that over. I really f***ed up."

(pause)

Bert: "Oh, we're live."

Apparently they frequently tape the pre-game stuff, and no one told Bert. He f***ing apologized once the game was underway.

Isn't that just like the Yankees to buy up the all the best talent available? I actually learned more about the game from Kitty's commentary than I did in 12 years playing it.

Dave, you have a point. But Yankees and the way they throw money around...Every player is going to have a year in which they may not live up to expectations.
