Pretty much you get 5 hits in a game, you're going to get strong consideration for BOD. Which means, of course, that Batgirl's going to run away with this damned thing, because Joe Mauer is going to do this every damned day for the rest of his career. Making him the perennial Boyfriend of the Day.

Good choice!

Mauer is giving Teddy Ballgame a run for his money!

Posted by: talldrinkowater at June 27, 2006 09:51 PM

.389 !! I'm gonna go vote 25 more times!

Posted by: martinjester at June 27, 2006 09:55 PM

Mauer now has more smash hit singles than Billy Joel and Elton John combined!

VERY well deserved. Good lord.

But I'm gonna save "perennial BOD" for whoever figures out how to get the Tigers and Bitch Sox to lose a game.

Dear Batgirl,

But triples are still hot, right?

Posted by: tinysuperhero at June 27, 2006 10:02 PM

TSH - Personally, I do think a more than honorable mention should go to you for the Triple!

Posted by: talldrinkowater at June 27, 2006 10:05 PM

That smile Joey gave the stands after his 4th hit...be still my heart!

Katharriet--I second that motion!

Posted by: bjl1996 at June 27, 2006 10:09 PM

Dear Mr. Hero,

Totally. So is the nice leather you flashed, the good hits, and the not sliding head first into first base.

Love,

BG

What's the deal with Bartlett getting hit by pitches? Admittedly, a useful skill. But probably not a good long term strategy.

Posted by: MadtownTwin at June 27, 2006 10:12 PM

Hahaha I love it!

Posted by: Grace at June 27, 2006 10:12 PM

Highlights of this game:

The gritted teeth "Superhero coming IN!" look on LNP's face when he tagged up and ran home on Doctor's sac fly.

Seeing the Doctor grin -- grin! -- in the dugout.

Watching the batters say very, very bad words after striking out to Young 'Cisco.

And five flippin' hits.

Posted by: CarrieICL at June 27, 2006 10:17 PM

I repeat...Jason Vari-who?

Posted by: Torhu at June 27, 2006 10:20 PM

BIG MAUER FAN!!! Just wanted to say that I was wondering if Eric edited the hair in that pic or if that was his real hair? Hard to tell? No but seriously awesome game!!!!

Posted by: allie at June 27, 2006 10:29 PM

One little tick from .390
Awsome - just unbelievably awesome

Posted by: Todd at June 27, 2006 10:31 PM

Does anyone know who the last player was that cleared .400 during the season (with qualifying # of AB's)

Posted by: Todd at June 27, 2006 10:34 PM

Yes, Mauer is amazing.

I love the super photo...thanks Eric. Great job.

Posted by: bubblemint at June 27, 2006 10:36 PM

Todd I think it was Ted Williams.

Posted by: talldrinkowater at June 27, 2006 10:37 PM

MUCH love to LNP, because, well, he is one of my BFs and he had a great game today. Heart.

Chairman! That performance was superhuman. (I love the pic - that's good stuff, Maynard.) To quote Annie Potts' character in Pretty In Pink:

Applause, applause, applause!

Posted by: FordHoiberg at June 27, 2006 10:47 PM

tall...isn't that the last hitter to end the season above .400?

Posted by: Torhu at June 27, 2006 11:02 PM

Yes yes it was

Posted by: Todd at June 27, 2006 11:20 PM

I hade the great pleasure to be at this game, and what a game it was, after Joe hit his 4th he hade to tip his hat (or uh, helmet) to get us to shut up, now that was FUN. Vote Joe was flashing on the screens as he hit his 5th *gush* I love him; I have to go vote like one million times for him, “Oh you are going to too, good.”
PS the Kirby thing was awesome.

Superman has sideburns!

Posted by: Ryan at June 27, 2006 11:34 PM

Hey, as Batgirl is an official trendsetter, I think we need her to publicize this new 'we're not worthy' bow that seems to be fast turning into the preferred honorific for Mauer. I humbly suggest a name along the lines of 'The Mau Bow' or something like that, but defer to BG's better judgement. In any case, it needs a name, and then we need to tell everyone to do it, and then we'll be seeing it every time he comes up to the plate, and that'll be awesome.

Posted by: biggoombah at June 27, 2006 11:56 PM

Addendum: Maybe a Legovision tutorial on how to bow to Mau(er)? :D Sounds like pure ESPN Page 2 gold to me!

Posted by: biggoombah at June 27, 2006 11:59 PM

Torhu: thought that was what Todd meant!

Correct me if I am wrong, Todd! :)

Posted by: talldrinkowater at June 28, 2006 12:25 AM

No, allie, the hair is not Joe's.

I tried to fiddle with it a little, but it would have been much more involving than it needed to be.

Posted by: Eric at June 28, 2006 12:28 AM

WOW!!! Being a HUGE mauer fan, i didn't think i could fall in love with him anymore than i already was, but alas...he still ceases to amaze me.(sigh)

Kudos to mauer and the whole damn team, there is much joy in being a twins fan right now!!!

Posted by: mrs.mauer at June 28, 2006 01:50 AM

Um mrs.mauer, don't you mean that Joe never ceases to amaze you?

:)

Posted by: talldrinkowater at June 28, 2006 02:20 AM

I love the picture.

Posted by: Rach at June 28, 2006 08:10 AM

Wheeee! I [heart] the Chairman. But I hope the Doctor keeps continuing to challenge him for the BOD of the honors. And, of course, Cuddyer. ;)

Torhu: What's with "Jason Vari-who?" It's Jason Barlett or Jason Kubel. Neither of those names start with a V! ;)

Posted by: JustBeth at June 28, 2006 08:36 AM

Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941. Carew hit .388 in 1977, one point lower than the Chairman's current BA.

Posted by: twayn at June 28, 2006 10:12 AM

Oh, and Williams was just 22 years old during the 1941 season.

Posted by: twayn at June 28, 2006 10:14 AM

That smile Joey gave the stands after his 4th hit...be still my heart!...hilarious! My friends swear it was at us...whatever friends...

Yay Chairman! If you haven't already, go VOTE JOE!!!

Posted by: Teece at June 28, 2006 10:29 AM

Tony Gwynn hit .394 in the strike shortened year of 1994. I believe that season ended on August 10th, or thereabouts. Also, the Expos had a commanding lead in the NL Central.

[Still, there seems to be a bit of awe at just how comfortable Mauer has looked at the plate lately, including the man who delivered the clutch performance on the mound for the Twins in Tuesday's 9-2 victory over the Dodgers, Francisco Liriano.

The normally stoic pitcher couldn't help but laud his catcher for what he's recently done.

"He makes it look easy," Liriano said. "He's amazing. I've never seen anybody hitting like that."]

i just added the maurer/supermauer photo as my backdrop...great work bat girl/eric

Posted by: scott at June 28, 2006 12:00 PM

Torhu,

I think the last player to be over .400 at any point during the season with qualifying at bats was John Olerud. I don't remember what season it was, but he was hitting like, .396 going into September and finished at .340 or something like that.

Respectfully,

LTLC

Stumbled upon this site by accident. I'm a Tigers fan but have to say Mauer is scary good right now. Also, we love Verlander and Zumaya here in the D, but I came away very impressed with Liriano against Houston last week. Nasty. I also believe that Pudge was over .400 at some point in mid-June in 2004, his first in Detroit, because the town was nuts for him. I say that with about 80% certainty. Here's to hoping the White Sox and Ozzie go down with a bang. Great Site.

Posted by: Matt at June 29, 2006 02:29 PM

Mr. Mauer certainly has it goin on, yet the Superman picture makes him look like a mix between the Fonz and Ponch from CHIPs.
