Hunh. At least he's owned up to it.

Posted by: Salt-Man Z at March 31, 2006 10:12 AM

Well, one does have to give him props for immediately apologizing and not beating around the bush.

I'll be interested to see his blood alcohol content.

"Lessons learned are like bridges burned; you only need to cross them but once..."

Hopefully that will be the case.

Posted by: bubblemint at March 31, 2006 10:22 AM

Ok, that did not improve my morning.

Posted by: Spyder44 at March 31, 2006 10:42 AM

Bubblemint - well said. I must say that the report does make him sound pretty mature for a 22-year old who has just been arrested for driving drunk. I'm glad nobody was hurt, and hopefully it's the last of this kind of judgmental error.

Posted by: sacky at March 31, 2006 10:48 AM

Great. Now the Vikings are going to try and draft him.

Posted by: Kurtis at March 31, 2006 10:53 AM

He's 22. Few people know their limits at 22. Bet he's among them, now. I expect he went out, was having a nice time, and had a drink or two more than he ought. We've all done that, haven't we?

He's being responsible (and, if I may say so, pretty brave) about the whole thing. And, fortunately, no one got hurt.

Posted by: infield at March 31, 2006 10:55 AM

Dear Sacky,

I must give credit to Dan Fogelberg for the quote.

Dear infield,

Yes, I think we all have.

Let's hope 'Cisco keeps it at one strike...and saves the other strikes for when he's out on the mound.

Posted by: bubblemint` at March 31, 2006 11:09 AM

1) Kudos to TR and Gardy for standing behind him.

2) Agreed on all previous comments

3) Lets hope parents and teachers can use this as a teaching tool, if nothing else.

Kurtis: Touche'!

Posted by: Skorch at March 31, 2006 12:54 PM

Kurtis - Thanks! That one made me laugh out loud.

I liked both Francisco's and Terry Ryan's comments.

These kinds of things have been blessedly rare for the Twins - one of the reasons I love rooting for them.

So much to learn, so much at risk, so little wiggle room.... welcome to life and the big leagues, Francisco.

Posted by: Drewster at March 31, 2006 01:17 PM

Am I the only one that think he should have been fined or suspended? Even if just a token fine or suspension? I mean, I understand we all make mistakes but you know, moral high ground and all.

I hope this is just until he heals.

Posted by: e-9 at March 31, 2006 01:51 PM

bad stuff.

Posted by: Haplo at March 31, 2006 02:02 PM

mmarkiep,

You know, if he was being a weasel about it, I'd want him fined, too. But he owned up to it right away, and presumably the organization knows this guy well enough to make a pretty educated guess as to whether this incident was out of character for him.

Also, by not suspending him, they're keeping him close, and keeping an eye on him. And when a young guy like that makes a mistake that big, there are lots of reasons to keep an eye on him in the days after.

The court will probably fine him and impose some kind of community service. That, plus the media and the public humiliation and the dressings-down from his coaches and manager will hopefully be enough punishment to make sure he never does anything like this again.

By virtue of being a public figure, after all, he's already being punished more (by being publicly embarassed) than your average first-time DUI offender where no accident occurred.

Posted by: infield at March 31, 2006 02:23 PM

mmmarkiep-I don't know about suspended or fined or whatever, but I want him to have some consequences. Maybe they feel the legal ones will be enough? I dunno, just as long as he doesn't walk away from this shrugging nonchalantly, that's what I want.

Posted by: JustBeth at March 31, 2006 02:32 PM

Grrr. Come on kiddo.

infield: "I expect he went out, was having a nice time, and had a drink or two more than he ought. We've all done that, haven't we?"

bubblemeint: "Yes, I think we all have"

---

Actually, we all haven't. : )

But yes, everyone makes mistakes. Hopefully this will be nothing more than a lesson learned for the young 'Cisco Kid.

Those in glass houses...

Posted by: TwinsCubsSeries at March 31, 2006 03:47 PM

actually his "apology" typically comes after the team tells him he better make a statement. But yeah, at least the guy fessed up. Still, its not a good thing for a rookie to be doing, at least not until later in the season. I think management "standing by" him should have been a little tougher on him.

Posted by: carolinabbq at March 31, 2006 04:36 PM

I've got to say I'm pretty disappointed in him. Trib says BAC=.133. I imagine that making the team was among his most exciting moments and he was celebrating that, but hey, call a cab/teamate. Hopefully Francisco will redeem himself (off the field, I'm not worried about on).

Posted by: Bob at March 31, 2006 04:40 PM

a BAC of .133 isn't as much as you think it is that's like 4 beers in a hour or less maybe it's because i'm in college but that really isn't that much. He shouldn't have been driveing but that's when we found a ampartment a block form the bar we took it.

Posted by: Paul at March 31, 2006 05:34 PM

Did anyone notice that it was 5 a.m. when he was stopped? What time do bars close in Ft. Myers? In Ft. Lauderdale, back in the day, there was only one or two places that were open after 2 a.m.I imagine the team assumes that the players are all in bed by 5 a.m., but then, I am an old guy.

Hey everyone, this great picture of Matthew LeCroy will make us all feel better. He's one face I'm really going to miss this year...:

Also, the Twins have all of their pictures up on www.mntwins.com, and none of them look TOO goofy this year :)

Posted by: RAL at March 31, 2006 06:52 PM

Oh Paco. You made a mistake. I'm sorry. Just behave buddy. You'll be fine.

Posted by: Rivasfan at March 31, 2006 07:05 PM

Off topic but you should check out the new white sox comic Palehose Six it's pretty funny. Even if you are Twins fans. But hey i like this website.

Posted by: Semi-evil Sox Fan at March 31, 2006 07:22 PM

I will miss Matthew also. Hope he has a great year. Ya gotta love that smile.

Posted by: Mary at April 1, 2006 08:10 AM

OMG.

Posted by: Say Rah! at April 1, 2006 09:43 AM

al - according to the Strib article he was stopped at 1:58 am.

Posted by: heraldguy at April 1, 2006 10:50 AM

I am glad no one got hurt....I would never fine or suspend him because he looks like he'll help the team. If our new slugging third baseman Juan the Baptist got arrested for the same offense, I'd handcuff him and hide the key somewhere around first base. With his OBP, he'd never find it.

Posted by: Ask Kleiner at April 1, 2006 11:07 AM

I suggest that anyone of you that does something similar should be suspended from their job for a week and have to pay their employer $5,000 for embarassing the company. We do have a legal system in this country but who cares?

Posted by: broker at April 1, 2006 12:27 PM

I meant "Tony the Baptist" not "Juan" of course. Sorry for the mix-up.

Posted by: ask kleiner at April 1, 2006 03:41 PM

Broker- "I suggest that anyone of you that does something similar should be suspended from their job for a week and have to pay their employer $5,000 for embarassing the company. We do have a legal system in this country but who cares?"

Well, if my employer was paying me a salary highly incongruous with the value of my work in order to help encourage "fans" of our organization to support it just because it makes them happy, that punishment would seem pretty appropriate when I gave those fans another chance to say "Screw it. I'm fed up with these immature jerks playing for my team" (see the Vikings for a great example of this). I have very little sympathy with someone who puts other people's (including mine) lives at unnecessary risk so he can conveniently drive himself home, no matter how great he is at throwing a ball.

Oopsies?

I don't think Oopsie is the right word. Maybe dumb, dangerous, or stupid.
