Bat Miscellany: The Fellowship of the Miscellany

At CBS Sportsline, Gardy talks about looking up in the Central Division. The whole article's worth a read, but Batgirl particularly enjoyed this quote:

Hey, what's this stuff about us not making any big moves, Gardenhire demanded, noting that the Twins made a significant announcement of their own around the time Thome joined the defending world champions: They revealed a new vest that they'll wear as an alternate jersey this summer.

And speaking of the sartorial abominations, you can protest the pixie vests at Twins Fest this year, when Dr. Morneau and Young Bart model them for the fans. Batgirl expects signs and some civil disobedience (nonviolent, please). Stay strong, stay resolute, and we shall get through this, together.

And finally, a generous soul from WCCO sends these pictures from the Twins Caravan's stop inside the home of the Caravan Contest winners. Next year, please let Batgirl win. And bring the Jackal in his leather jacket.

Well, I can't say no to VP's new look : )

Posted by: Megan at January 23, 2006 09:59 PM

When I first heard we were getting slevless jersys I cringed. Shouldn't the Chairman be modling, insted of Dr. Morneau and Young Bart?

There was a Twins Caravan show live from Winona on FSN tonight. I stumbled across it while flipping channels around 10:15.

Who knew that my dear boyfriend the Nathanest of Joe's would also have the fairest curls in all the land?

Sweet... ;-)

I think OMM and LeCroy should be the models, this way no one will like them.

Posted by: public enemy mike at January 24, 2006 12:18 AM

I have an idea for the Batstore! How about a "No Pixie Vests" shirt?

Posted by: talldrinkowater at January 24, 2006 03:33 AM

Since the starting pitchers usually pick the jerseys, we should all write letters to the starting rotation this year and request that the pixie vests not be choosen.

Can I come for breakfast, too?

Do the contest winners live in a castle? It's beautiful, but kind of spooky.

Posted by: NIH at January 24, 2006 08:08 AM

I saw the coverage on the news yesterday. I thought it was very cute how both Joe and Jesse looked like they just got out of bed.

Speaking of the Jackal, Bat Girl ... looks like he has a peculiar interest in Spam! Look at this, from yesterday's Caravan (from MLB.com):

Spam I am: One of the last events of the day took place at the Hormel Plant in Austin. Hormel has long been one of the sponsors of the Twins and with the team in town to visit a local school, the group had the team stop by for a quick visit and autograph session with some of the employees.

As part of the visit, each of the four members of the caravan was given a goodie-box with various products such as a SPAM T-shirt and their own supply of SPAM. The players appreciated the generosity of the group and were excited to take something home but Silva was hoping that on his next trip to the plant, he would get to see more of an inside look.

"I wanted to learn more about the plant but we don't have time for that," Silva said. "Next time I hope we have a little bit more time so we can learn about how they make that stuff."

Posted by: Team Lew at January 24, 2006 08:58 AM

I so do NOT want to know how they make that stuff.

So, is the Jackal planning ahead for his post-baseball career as a canned meat mogul?

Posted by: Jlubby at January 24, 2006 09:39 AM

I feel sorry for Dr. Morneau and Bart, and I don't think we should subject them to a pixie protest. Won't it be bad enough that they will be MODELING? I think they will feel awkward enough being the MODELS for the new uniforms ('This is why I became a professional ballpayer...sigh...') without a protest from their loving fans. Maybe the rally should take a form more like the "Support our Troops" campaign... "Support our Twins ... Friends don't let friends wear pixie vests."

I must say that it was a wonderful way to start yesterday because channel 9 was with 'CCO at that particular outing and then interviewed my adorable bf, Mr. Nathan.... *sigh* And then to see him dressed REASONABLY (no horribly busy loud shirt to be seen) and all his cute little curls that are usually covered up?? I nearly couldn't focus to drive to work after that.

Posted by: capitalbabs at January 24, 2006 09:56 AM

Aaack! Those pixie-vests truly ARE an abomination. NOOoooooo!

Posted by: Jeb at January 24, 2006 10:35 AM

Does anyone know if the Twins are going to let the boys model the Pixie vest sans t-shirts underneath?

My guess is no since that would technically make them out of proper uniform.

Maybe that is part of the 18 and older Twinsfest held later that night?

Posted by: caluofmn at January 24, 2006 10:41 AM

Geez, Mike Lynch is still around?

Anyway, the Nationals recently had two of our own heroes model new uniforms -- Tex and the Barbarian -- and both of them really seemed to be having a good time of it. I think Tex was a little overwhelmed with all the adulation at first, but the Barbarian's face just lit up when the little kids started coming up to him.

Surely, Batlings can find a way to express their disdain for the pixie vests while showing the love to the players modeling them. Hate the pajamas, love the player.

(And who came up with vests? For a Minnesota team? Don't they know it's COLD in Minnesota? Team needs long-sleeved uniforms, is what. You know, for when they get that outdoor stadium and they have to play through the snow in April and September. Long-sleeved uniforms made out of wind- and water-resistant duck cloth and flannel lining, with a high collar and handwarmer pockets, maybe from LL Bean. Not, shudder, vests.)

Posted by: BallWonk at January 24, 2006 12:25 PM

How about down vests? That way, if a guy takes one in the ribs, it won't leave a mark.

Posted by: cmathewson at January 24, 2006 01:20 PM

Dear Batgirl

On the Quickie today one of the guys writes that since the Reds have fired their GM, that it may be a smart move to hire a savvy blogger. Would you be interested in running the Reds ?

Vote Wayne Kravisky For Reds GM!

Posted by: cmathewson at January 24, 2006 01:57 PM

Dear Mr. Mike,

Well, at least they wouldn't wear pixie vests.

Sincerely,
BG

Did anyone else see Luis Rivas getting signed to a minor league contract with the Devil Rays? Do they have enough card games down there in Tampa to keep Luivas happy?

Posted by: The Mauer Swing at January 24, 2006 02:56 PM

Dear BG

Would you trade Griffey to the Twins for Tori and Johan ?

p.e.m.

Posted by: public enemy mike at January 24, 2006 02:58 PM

Thanks, TMS. I was wondering this morning what would become of Rivas. Honestly. I actually had a dream a while back in which Luis and Mrs. Luis had to move into my guest room, because they had no where else to go. (That sort of freaked me out. My level of investment seemed a bit high for the off-season.)

Now, introducing more possible uniforms has always seemed like a ploy to sell more gear to fans. But really -- pixie vests? I'd be shocked if they manage to unload a half-dozen of the things. Has anyone ever seen a fan of one of the other vested teams proudly sporting that look? Really?

Posted by: hrunting at January 24, 2006 03:11 PM

Dear Mr. Mike,

Um, no.

Sincerely,
Batgirl

Posted by: Batgirl at January 24, 2006 03:37 PM

Ironically, the Reds have worn pixie vests (on and off) since the 60's.

Posted by: Neil at January 24, 2006 05:22 PM

Twins signed LNP to a one-year contract...
