Help a Batling: Fashion Edition

Pulled from the BatComments:

I need some advice.

I'm trying to decide which jersey to get for the upcoming season, and am stuck choosing which one. I'm leaning towards the gray away jersey, but the blue home is narrowly behind.

I figured this was the best place to ask for fashion advice... any thoughts?

-Eric

Dear Eric, these are difficult decisions, esepcially in trying times such as these. It is important to remember there is no right answer, that jersey selection is a personal choice and no matter what you choose, it will be the right one because YOU chose it. Batgirl has a powder blue replica jersey with "Batgirl" on the back from Goober and Sooz. Jeb has a white pinstripe home jersey with Koskie on the back. Goober has an old skool jersey with the number 34 on the back. All are valid choices, even if Goober's has a mustard stain on it. The point is, as Derrida says, there are no absolute truths, jersey-wise--except, of course, that pixie vests suck.

Love,
BG

Dear BG;

Is my new Tony Batista Twins jersey going to go out of fasion as fast as the Bret Boone, John Smiley, Tommy Herr jerseys I have did?

Eric-
Your only choice is to go with the home white, backside decorated with "Larkin" and "9".

It was meant to be.

I could never choose one so I admit to have gone over board.

I have a home white w/ Radke on the back, a road grey w/ Viola, Home blue w/ Meint, and road blue with Santana; plus a powder blue w/ 34.

I'll never get a pixie vest, I guess I'll do anything for love but I won't do that!

You gotta get the one you like the most...and then get all the rest later.

Posted by: caluofmn at January 22, 2006 02:09 PM

I'm old school, so I'd go for an old school jersey, all other things being equal. Either home white or away grey... wool, not the red/blue polyester pull overs... with no name on the back, just a number... 3 or 6 probably. If I got something more 'current' it would probably be a Hrbek or Blyleven jersey. I'm kind of funny about not wearing a guy's jersey until his entire body of work is complete. (Still give my kid a hard time about the $ blown on his Albert Belle Orioles jersey.)

Posted by: JimCrikket at January 22, 2006 02:32 PM

It's always a tough choice and really is a matter of personal preference.

I've got a navy blue Guzman jersey that I purchased at the Pro Shop after Guzie was traded. I sometimes feel weird about wearing it, but I finally have an official jersey (and got it at a discount, so hey-- bargain!) and when Guzie was good, I really enjoyed his play.

I also have a white satin Hunter jersey-like shirt which is the one I wore for my wedding on the field. And another white Hunter jersey that is less shiny (but very very white, it's not the official one) that was to be my wedding jersey until I found another one I liked better.

I want more, of course. My Dad has cool Cooperstown collection Killebrew & Hrbek & Puckett jerseys. My husband and father now both have Twins hawaiian shirts which are super nifty.

And, of course, I have hats from every hat day for a zillion years (including the shiny silver one from the "Future" game that one year).

Posted by: Laurel at January 22, 2006 02:48 PM

The classics can't be beat: home white or road grey. Plus, one more vote of confidence in BG for her stand against pixie vests.

Posted by: fiesta at January 22, 2006 03:56 PM

since i tend to spill a lot, white is a problem for me (although i do have a home white with stewie on it.) so my jersey of choice is a home blue with my own name on the back and my birthday for the number. it will not be retired until i am. i like to think of it as the jersey of the player to be named later. (much later).

Posted by: dorkyhouse at January 22, 2006 04:51 PM

I think we all should order the jersey of our choice with our respective "batling" nick on it and have a party at a game some time... I can just imagine the looks.

Posted by: JimCrikket at January 22, 2006 05:02 PM

I'd really like a powder-blue Cuddyer throwback. Or - in honor of my favorite player of all time, the Dazzle Man - a grey Gladden #32 jersey.

I saw a guy with a Brian Harper jersey once, outside the Oakland Colliseum. I wanted to buy him a beer. Brian Harper? That's awesome.

Posted by: Haplo at January 22, 2006 05:12 PM

By "suck," of course, Batgirl means that pixie vests ROCK. Someday, when I can afford the luxury, I'll be sending one to her as a token of my affection. Maybe a Bitch Sox vest with #12 on the back?

Posted by: frightwig at January 22, 2006 05:59 PM

I'd wear a 3 or a 6 jersey because Killebrew and Oliva are the most recognizable of the Twins of my youth. But I think my favorite Twin back then was someone else. Can you name him?

He played for the Senators and moved with them to Minnesota.

He must have really been a jinx for Washington DC, however, because he also played for the "new" Senators and moved with them to Texas when they became the Rangers.

In between, he was a member of the original Seattle Pilots after being, I believe, the first player drafted in the expansion draft.

Sorry, BG, for being off topic, but I figured what the heck... its a slow Sunday.

Posted by: JimCrikket at January 22, 2006 06:02 PM

My home team jersey also has a mustard stain...but it was collateral damage inflicted during the celebration of Game 7, 2001...so, it remains the ONLY mustard ever allowed near my person.

Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at January 22, 2006 06:11 PM

As I live in Southern Cal, my choice is the road Grey. Plus the road says Minnesota, as a native I like that.

Posted by: Scotty_Dawg at January 22, 2006 06:44 PM

Never actually had a real jersey, so my advice is: don't get one. Buy ten t-shirts for the same amount of money instead. But if you do get one, you can never go wrong with blue.

And in a completely off-topic mention, Anna Benson is coming to Baltimore. Hold me, I'm scared.

Posted by: CarrieICL at January 22, 2006 07:03 PM

Carrie... go to Wal-Mart. Pretty safe bet that's a no-Anna zone.

Posted by: JimCrikket at January 22, 2006 07:06 PM

But... but then I'd have to go to Wal-Mart.

Can I go to Target instead? Is Target a no-Anna zone? Will I need to set up a baracade?

Posted by: CarrieICL at January 22, 2006 07:15 PM

No official confirmation, but I would bet it's safe to assume that Target would also be a no-Anna zone. Honestly, I have trouble imagining Anna hanging out at the Inner Harbor area, for that matter.

Posted by: JimCrikket at January 22, 2006 07:19 PM

While we're on topic, my b-day is coming up, and I can decide between a Home white or home blue. I was thinking about getting Joe Nathan for the back, but I don't want to get it if he's going to take off as soon as his contract is up. Your thoughts?

Posted by: Twinsboy at January 22, 2006 07:40 PM

Whoops. Just checked, and he's signed thru 2007 with a club option for '08. My bad. Still would like to know color thoughts.

Posted by: Twinsboy at January 22, 2006 07:50 PM

Wow, I can't believe my question got posted on here. Is that kind of like having the Pope call you up at your house?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'm going with #7 himself, and I guess I'll go with the road gray. I'm partial to it, and someone above made the good point that white would be tough to care for and keep clean.

Thanks, fellow Batlings and BG!

Posted by: Eric at January 22, 2006 08:28 PM

I waffled for ages before going with Supernatural over the Chairman, home blue. One factor is that I'm a relatively big dude and that 7 would float in a dark blue sea. 57 is much happier.

Mrs D. made her choice years ago - home white #1 'NIXON'. She loved the hustle of My Man Otis at age 83, and was heartbroken when that punk doofus Royals second baseman kicked him in the face and broke his jaw.

I may have to invest in a rookie year Mientkiewicz #40 at some point.

Posted by: TD at January 22, 2006 09:37 PM

I like the White Jerseys - my sister the blue ones and we both think the grey ones are kind of BLAH - just my two cents =)

Oh and I saw on the Twins Fest Schedule that the Good Doctor and Jason Bartlett will be modeling the new Pixie Vest on Friday at the WCCO stage - man we have a lot of modeling goin on =)

As a holiday present I got my fiancee a powder-blue Gaetti jersey. He absolutely loved it. The powder-blue jerseys are great because so few people have them (and they just look cooler).

Posted by: sheenie at January 22, 2006 10:48 PM

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you all my addiction. In my closet you will find not just one but over 18 of our hometown nine's jerseys. I have all colors - red, red w/blue trim, blue w/red trim, red and white, white w/red, grey and blue, powder blue (a few) any many more. It is so bad that I still regret to this day that I passed on a real nice brown w/tan pinstripes model due to financial limitations. For what is money for. I would even wear a white w/pink pinstripes model if they come in XXL! Thanks for your expected understanding. Yours, twinsfansam

The one thing that absolutely drives me insane is when they put players' names on the backs of the throwback jerseys; come on, Carew never had his name on the back of a Twins home uni, did he? (The mention of the Larkin jersey is what got me thinking of that - since Gino never had his name on his home jersey, either.) I wish the Twins would go back to not having names on the home jerseys, but that's just me - it just always felt like not having the name on there was saying, "You're watching at home, you're their fans, you should know who wears what number". For the record, I have a white home jersey with 45 on it (for Twig), a road navy blue with 8 (for my boy Ron "Malignant" Coomer, who I see will be at TwinsFest this year), and my wife just bought me (grudgingly, I might add) a green St Patrick's Day BP jersey for my birthday, no number affixed as of now. I'm thinking it's going to end up with 22 on the back, for the amazing Bradke.

And I will not join in with the anti-vest rhetoric until I've seen them. I do think that they should have gone with a "TC" on the front instead of making it just a home jersey with the sleeves deleted; that would have been cool, I think. I'm still waiting to see a "back to the future" jersey from around 2000 (or whenever that was) for sale; do you guys remember that one? With the giant "Two Guys" logo on the front and the bad, "Space 1999"-style numbers on the back? I have the cap - with the silver bill and the silver-outlined "TC" - but I never did see those hideous jerseys again. Tragic.

Posted by: adidasman at January 23, 2006 08:51 AM

Blue, go with the blue and make sure you wear a Batgirl t-shirt under it.

I have a lovely blue jersey. It has my name (they can't trade me can they?) and the last two digits of the year I was born as my number (the day is 27 and that's the Good Doctor's number).

"By "suck," of course, Batgirl means that pixie vests ROCK. Someday, when I can afford the luxury, I'll be sending one to her as a token of my affection. Maybe a Bitch Sox vest with #12 on the back?"
Frightwig! That was harsh!

"Wow, I can't believe my question got posted on here. Is that kind of like having the Pope call you up at your house?"
No, it's like having Ryan call you.

Anyway, I also do not own a jersey - like Carrie, I'm all about the t-shirts. Much more affordable for me and easier to replace if, for some ungodly reason, something should happen to it. If you must go for a jersey, though, I like the blue ones. They're just so classy.

Posted by: FordHoiberg at January 23, 2006 11:43 AM

I always wear my white Luis Rodriguez #38 jersey....*nods* Either that one or the #74 Rodriguez one...and that's white too. I like the white ones, but trust me when I say, if I had a powder blue jersey? I'd totally be wearing that one!

The ultimate Twins Jersey is a 60s jersey with number 3 on the back.

Posted by: sbg at January 23, 2006 12:35 PM

Eric,
You are very forward thinking. I'm struggling with attire for this weekend's TwinsFest. Options include: The Off season Sucks BG sweatshirt or baseball jersey T, a red Twins sweatshirt, or a Rogers Hornsby quote T. I'll be working the Parkinson Association of MN booth this weekend (another chance to get your Circle Me Bert Bobblehead!) so appropriate attire is of utmost importance.

Posted by: Eileen from Parkinson's at January 23, 2006 12:47 PM

My jersey is blue/home, and I love it because it was a mother's day gift.

My hubby got it really cheap, though, because it's a factory reject. There's supposed to be a white border around the red T-W-I-N-S, but it's missing. It just has red on blue. Hmmmm...I hope my hubby doesn't think *I'm* a factory reject.

Dearest Ms. Eileen,

Oh, absolutely the Offseason Sucks sweatshirt.

1. Beautiful as the Twins regular home whites and road grays are, a fan can't go wrong with the blue alternate road jersey. You can see that bright white "Minnesota" a mile away; just the thing for a proud Minny expat or emeritus fan. Plus it hides stains nicely and goes with anything (except a Twins cap, of course, what with the jersey and the cap being two different and clashing shades of blue).

2. What number is on BG's jersey? Dying to find out!

Posted by: BallWonk at January 23, 2006 02:09 PM

I always say go retro. The players never leave.
I learned this the hard way after I bought a Randall Cunningham Vikings jersey in the fall of '99.
A few years after that a relative gifted me a blue Twins home replica with #11 and "Jones" on the back.
My wife broke the trend with a retro powder blue with Hrbek's name and number on the back.
The best jersey I'll ever own.

Posted by: Batgirl at January 23, 2006 02:47 PM

If you want home a home jersey I would say a pinstripe with #2 or #51 or #42, for an away jersey #2 #55 or # 11

If you want a throwback #23 or #3 or #4 or #5 or #7 or #8 or #9 or #15 or #21 or #44 or #49 or #54 make great throwbacks.

You might even think about a #2 USA jersey from the up coming WBC.

Posted by: public enemy mike at January 23, 2006 02:52 PM

If it has to be a Twins jersey I say a power blue 29

Posted by: Nagasadow at January 23, 2006 03:05 PM

I did it. I bit the bullet and went with blue home alternate sporting the Chairman's 7. It was a tough decision, but everyone's advice here helped enormously. Here's to making this a season to display it proudly (although that will happen, win or lose).

I echo YankeeFan thought, pitchers and catchers? Aaaaa!

Posted by: Eric at January 23, 2006 03:09 PM

This one's easy:

Davis, No. 39.

And remember, RD used to accessorize, blue glove on the road and red at home. Sort of like being the Kate Spade of relief pitchers.

Posted by: RonDavis at January 23, 2006 03:20 PM

Digging the Kate Spade reference - as a self proclaimed handbag snob - I have to give a thumbs up to guy who knows his Kate Spade ;-)

I have a question for everyone.
If your favorite Twin went off and played for another team, how do people feel about getting another teams jersey b/c of that player?

Posted by: caluofmn at January 23, 2006 05:03 PM

calu, I'm sure I'll take some flak for this, but I love that idea. I begged and begged for an AJ giants jersey, and didn't get one, well, then we all know where he ended up, and I'm just not sure.

perhaps the new team has something to do with whether or not to purchase?

Posted by: aurora at January 23, 2006 05:37 PM

caluofmn, it depends on how I feel about the new team.

Can't possibly see myself in any Cubs jersey or any BitchSox pixie vest, no matter how I felt about the given player. But had AJ stayed with and prospered in SF, for example, I'd have had no qualms about wearing an AJ Giants jersey if someone gave it to me. Certainly wouldn't be my first choice of a way to blow $100+ of my own though.

Posted by: JimCrikket at January 23, 2006 05:38 PM

I completely understand the desire to have an AJ Giants jersey and almost got one but living in the Bay area, I tell you the only jersey Giants fans hate more than a Dodgers jersey is AJ's as a Giant.

I agree that it would be hard to spend that kind of $$$ on a non Twins item but...

I also agree that who the other team is matters...

I'm glad so far the response isn't if you are Twins fan, you can only wear a Twins jersey... I think we Twins fans love our guys even after they move on.

Posted by: caluofmn at January 23, 2006 06:06 PM

I'm thinking when next i go back to the Bay Area I should wear a Liriano jersey, just to twist the knife. Maybe wear it open with a T-shirt with some sort of AJ reference.

Posted by: BP at January 23, 2006 07:14 PM

BP

I make sure to keep every Giants fan I know up to date on Liriano's progress.

Often times they walk away mumbling something about AJ Doubleplay or other.... ;)

Posted by: caluofmn at January 23, 2006 07:21 PM

I just ordered a gold Venezuela WBC t-shirt with Santana/57 on the back. It's my consolation since I won't be going to Ft. Myers this year so won't get a spring training t-shirt.

Posted by: Word Smith at January 23, 2006 09:46 PM

JeffA: Thanks. Food for thought.

I was actually at the Turn Ahead The Clock Game where they wore the massive handshake logo on the front with the silver caps. I believe the Royals opposing space unis had yellow with the blue for some ungodly reason.

That game was also the first major league start (and possibly the ML debut) of one Mark Redman, if I recall correctly.

Posted by: JimCrikket at January 24, 2006 12:58 PM

I cannot agree with wearing another team's jersey, regardless of your affection for an ex-Twin. The idea of a Twins fan in a Brewers Koskie jersey or a Royals Mientkiewicz jersey is just intrinsically wrong, if you ask me. Just wear that guy's old Twins jersey, and then you salute him whilst still supporting your team.

By the by, the St. Patrick's Day BP jersey is sheer sweetness - for those of you considering such a purchase, yet timid about wading into those kelly green waters - and, unlike the pink stuff, it's still official team issue. Much to my wife's chagrin, I wear mine all the time. Be bold!
