Taking One For The Team

In the comments to yesterday's post, Batlings have begun a hot and purely unsubstantiated Hank Blalock-to-Twins rumor. There are rumors that Hankles is going to Florida, though there are more rumors that the Fish would then turn him around and trade him to someone else. [Not anymore. --ed.]His salary is not unworkable; what we need is something to trade. Batlings have generally shown an unwillingness to lose our hot young startling [STARTLING: A young starting pitcher. -ed.] pitching, so let's get creative here. Remember, this might hurt a bit. I have seasons 1-4 of the X-Files on DVD and I'm willing to trade them for Hank Blalock. (I'm not trading my complete set of Buffy DVDs though, except for maybe David Ortiz. And even then, I'd have to think about it.)

Seriously? Kyle Lohse and Michael Cuddyer for Blalock and a prospect. Texas is welcome to take Romero instead of Cuddyer, if they'd prefer.

Not-so-seriously? The coffee cup I got for graduating from college. It's a nice cup and has my initials and degree on it and all, but since it doesn't say "I spent four years in college and all I got was this lousy coffee cup," I'm not that attached.

I've got seasons 2 and 3 of CSI on DVD that I'd be willing to part with.

I've got the original Star Wars on VHS (before the Special Edition), I'm looking for 40 HR 120 RBI's and positive defense in return.

I have this really cool lighted spinny thing that's absolutely mesmerizing. perhaps if we turn it on and hold it in someone's face, we can send them into a trance and talk them into a Romero-for-anyone-great trade... and then we don't have to lose any of our favorite things.

Posted by: kafumbly at November 22, 2005 06:09 AM

Hey, I bought you those DVDs! You're supposed to keep them FOREVER!

Posted by: Goober at November 22, 2005 06:34 AM

I have a yellow plastic Southern Comfort cup that is a souvenir from the night before my 22nd birthday that I'd be willing to part with as long as I can take the quarters out of it first. I need my laundry money!

Posted by: ndtf at November 22, 2005 06:46 AM

Dear Goober,

This Christmas, will you get me a power-hitting third baseman?

Sincerely,
Batgirl

Posted by: Batgirl at November 22, 2005 07:25 AM

Now Foxsports.com shows that the Red Sox are ready to get Josh Beckett & Mike Lowell. So...I guess there wasn't much to that rumor about us getting Lowell.

Posted by: ForMorneau at November 22, 2005 08:20 AM

I have the movie beetlejuice still wrapped in plastic....I'm sure we could get a good trade for that one!!!!

Posted by: allie at November 22, 2005 08:21 AM

I'll give my complete Tintin collection (which includes the hard-to-find first two books, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and Tintin in the Congo) for Eric Chavez. Put I'm putting a franchise tag on the Wodehouse.

Posted by: Kurtis at November 22, 2005 08:36 AM

I read some startling stats on Blalock outside of Texas (a somewhat hitters' ballpark) that makes me wonder if our dream power-hitting third baseman from Texas might not be quite so much of a power-hitting third baseman. I won't give the numbers, but Cuddyer and Blalock, if you simply take their home and away stats, are very similar in average and on-base (Blalock has significant advantage in slugging, but he hit 20 of his 25 home runs at home). In my opinion, he's certainly not a replacement for the loss of hot young startling/starting pitchers.

Blalock for Lohse would be okay with me. If they want Romero, too, they could send us their pitching prospect (if TR can pull that off, I'll drop my jaw in awe--if he gets Blalock for Lohse/Romero, it's still fair).

(I like Lohse and don't want to see him gone. However, if we have to give a pitcher up, I know it's his time. I'll just be sad.)

I'm so Jealous you have season one of the X-Files!
I wouldn't trade my Buffy DVD's - not even for David Ortiz - come on it's Buffy - she kicked some serious ASS =)
Noooooo not Michael - we can't have a team without a Michael!

I have a Pee Wee's Playhouse Colorforms set I'd be willing to give up for a hitter...

Posted by: heraldguy at November 22, 2005 08:57 AM

Mmm. Let's see. I've got my miniature Joe Mays and Corey Koskie bobbleheads that I'd be willing to trade for a hitter. Too bad they're both pretty much worthless now. I'm not trading my mini Torii bobblehead, though.

I think my eagerness for trading for Hank Blalock is really my thinly veiled fantasy of acquiring Michael Young.

I would then teach Mr Young to play third base, second base, and shortstop simultaneously. He will then bat second, third, and fifth in the batting order. And I would have a lifetime supply of Papa John's pizza delivered to my box seats in the new Twins' outdoor stadium. All the while, I would be laughing maniacally.

Seriously, though, I traded for Michael Young in my 2005 MVP Playstation and it saved me a lot of money and got me lots of home runs. A man can dream.

Posted by: Neil at November 22, 2005 10:11 AM

Well, now that it looks like Red Sox are taking Lowell...they'll have a spare third basemen.

Mueller now available again?

Posted by: Torhu at November 22, 2005 10:38 AM

I will give up all my memories of grades 7-9, and as a deal-sealer, A-Rod. (Seriously, the Yankees won't even know he's gone. Trust me.)

Posted by: Dr. Trivicon at November 22, 2005 11:01 AM

As noted above, Blalock away from Corporate Land Grab Park (or whatever the Rangers' stadium is called these days) bears an eerie resemblence to all those Twins infielders whose lack of production hurt the team this past year. At 25, he certainly might get better, but right now he's just another lefty bat.

But you know who's *not* just another lefty bat? Jim Thome, that's who. Dude has, like, 430 home runs, and he's a really nice guy to boot. And you wouldn't want to see him traded to the White Sox or back to the Indians, would you?

Posted by: jeffstoned at November 22, 2005 11:47 AM

Batgirl - There's a 40-disc (!) Buffy set that just came out for $170-200 that has every episode. Your Buffy DVDs could be replaced relatively easily.

Of course I found out about this a couple weeks after I bought season 4, and it would now just be cheaper to buy the remaining seasons individually.

*sigh*

Click my name for info.

I might be talked in to giving up my Killebrew rookie card... but if the offer is for someone named Hank, it better be for a young Hank Aaron.

Posted by: JimCrikket at November 22, 2005 01:43 PM

I hear the mega buffy dvd set is not worth the money if you enjoy dvd extras.

I'd trade seasons 5 thru 7 of buffy for hank, maybe even season 1 of angel.

I'd trade all my replacements and husker du cds, b/c they sound better on the original LPs anyway.

I'd trade my soul asylum t-shirt that has the Jagermiester logo.

I'd trade Romero, Loshe, Stewart (sorry guys), Balfour ( I don't think he will ever pitch for the Twins), and yes DJ Cuddles for Hank.

But I'd rather have David Wright from the Mets

Posted by: caluofmn at November 22, 2005 03:20 PM

I've got autographed copies of Spilling Clarence and The Disapparition of James, but ... I'm not sure even a majority of the AL all star team would make me trade them.

What about teams that need outfield help? What could the Yankees give us for Denard Span and Romero?

Posted by: mmmarkiep at November 22, 2005 04:21 PM

I've seen Blalock hit a home run outside of Texas. Unfortunately, it's when he was in AAA. I like the guy -- he helped my hometown AA team win a championship and was a HUGE fan favorite, but I haven't paid much attention to his stats lately.

As this is Texas, I would start by offering just Romero and see if you can get away with that. It might work.

Posted by: Redbird at November 22, 2005 04:40 PM

No, no, not Denard!

I have a souvenir Kingdome baseball that I would be willing to kick in.

Posted by: Word Smith at November 22, 2005 05:07 PM

I think we should go to the Winter Meetings, find Texas's GM, and ask if he'd trade Blalock for a bag of balls and a 1987 replica Kent Hrbek jersey.

When he says, 'no', then we pull out a Wendy's Bacon Mushroom Melt and ask, "What about NOW?"

Posted by: David Michael Wintheiser at November 22, 2005 05:46 PM

Eek! Don't even suggest such a thing, mmmarkiep! I would be willing to give the Yanks my Denard Span Rookie League Baseball Card if it meant we could keep him. Reason numero uno to not trade the real Span? I hate to say it, but Torii ain't getting any younger or cheaper.

For Henry Blalock, I offer seasons 3 and 4 of my brother's Alias DVDs and my Spider-man and Harry Potter movie posters.

Posted by: annun at November 22, 2005 05:49 PM

Dear Mr. Wintheiser,

Please get a job with the Twins immediately,

Sincerely,
Batgirl

Posted by: Batgirl at November 22, 2005 06:03 PM

we're not going to get him this easily people. I say Lohse, Romero, maybe Cuddyer, or probably on of the 5 "new guys" (Gassner, Baker, Bonser, Liriano, Durbin) but probably not Liriano and hopefully not Baker.

It will have to be a combination...hopefully Lohse, Romero, and Cuddyer...but probably going to have to part with an actual big time Prospect here. We need an impact bat...preferably two...if we can do this and sign Piazza (who is apparently interested to DH and catch part time in Minnesota) we could be making a significant step towards a title, in my opinion.

Posted by: Josh at November 22, 2005 07:34 PM

More than anything, the Twins could use a right-handed stick with pop. Piazza 2000, or even what's left of him at a discount, would be better than another lefthanded hitter that strikes out too much and walks not enough. I would give up meat for winter and even thru Spring Training and Opening Day for a reasonably priced Mike.

Posted by: Hart at November 22, 2005 07:54 PM

okay... I was just cleaning my apartment a few moments ago, and I found both of my Ray "Menards Guy" bobbleheads. I offer those up for trade for a good bat.

Posted by: kafumbly at November 22, 2005 10:20 PM

Eugene Tooms for Hank Blalock?

Eugene Tooms. *shiver*

Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at November 22, 2005 10:38 PM

Eugene Tooms freaked the living crap out of me when I was younger...could never look at an airvent the same way.

Mmm...liver.

Posted by: Batgirl at November 23, 2005 10:55 AM

That episode was creepy but not as creepy as the one with the scary mom under the bed!!! They rarely showed that on reruns!

WW

Posted by: Wonder Woman at November 23, 2005 11:01 AM

WW-

That "Wonderful, Wonderful" song has an off-the-chart "ick" factor now. A close second is "Stuck in the Middle With You" from "Reservoir Dogs."

I think Tooms would make a great catcher...no passed balls...and nervous batters...and just think, he would have been instrumental in helping George Brett liberate the confiscated pine tar bat. Who DID draw the short straw that day?

Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at November 23, 2005 12:40 PM

Dearest Bat Bandwagoner -

Yeah -that's unfortunate no?!?!
Reservoir Dogs - I love the movie but yeah -I agree!

I don't know - wouldn't the ball be coverd with goo when he threw it back to the mound - and wouldn't the goo be considered an illegal substance???

WW

Posted by: Wonder Woman at November 23, 2005 03:04 PM

WW-Of course, you are correct. "Ick" factor standard just got higher. And...ew.

Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at November 23, 2005 08:28 PM

Bat Bandwagner -

ICK and more ick - I'm picturing the ball flying back to Johan and it's not pretty!

See this is what happens when you have to work the day after Thanksgiving and no one is around =)

Much Love

BG,

I might be willing to trade Buffy season 5 for something. That was the worst season anyway.
