A Cause To Believe In

Every once in a while, Batgirl gets an e-mail from someone asking Batgirl to help promote a worthy cause, and Batgirl is more than delighted to oblige. There was the Courage Center raffle, the Parkinsons Disease Bobblehead sale, Twins auctions for hurricane relief.

And here is another: ShutUpTimMcCarver.com

Someday I hope we can remove baseball from the evil clutches of Fox altogether. This is a start. Begin small, my dears, but dream big.

Proof that teh interweb has worthwhile use.

On top of BG.com, obviously.

Sadly, even if Fox were to lose baseball (which would be a good thing), McCarver would probably go wherever baseball goes. I have no idea why, but it's like he comes with the contract to carry the games.

OMG - what a FABULOUS site!!
It is truly a cause worth - linking too!!

That is indeed a beautiful site AND mission.

Nick,

I believe they are technically termed "parasites."

Posted by: Eric at October 5, 2005 10:01 PM

And then there's the Tim McCarver show, a warm bath of an interview with someone I've never heard of.

Actually the guy who really gets on my nerves is Rick Sutcliffe. He just decides to slurp someone and all sense goes out of the window. During the Sox/sox game we discovered how Ozzie was responsible for the Marlins winning the world series because he was such an aggresive 3rd base coach. He just opens his mouth and the rubbish comes out, it's astonishing

That totally rocks. Time to Googlebomb it!

Now what we need is a sight to shut down Miller and Morgan on ESPN. I cannot stand those two. I actually put them on mute during the Angels / Yankees game last night.

Morgan is incredibly smug and is always proclaiming that whatever happens is what he expected. Miller is Morgan's little - if someone that corpulent can be called little - toady. And BOTH of them can never go more than 10 minutes without professing their undying love for Derek Jeter.

They must be pulled off the air. Now.

Posted by: BadAndy48 at October 6, 2005 07:41 AM

Oh, Derek Jeter, he's just so wonderful... *sigh*

Posted by: Joe Morgan at October 6, 2005 07:45 AM

I am glad to know that I'm not the only one who can't stand the baseball coverage on FOX. I remember thinking during the last game of the season that the only good thing about finishing third is not having to hear Tim McCarver or Joe Buck.
I agree ESPN is equally annoying. The last Twins game they broadcasted Jon Miller kept calling Carlos Silva "Santos" and Jason Bartlett "Josh"
The only way to handle it is to turn off the sound and turn on WCCO.

*applause*

Thank goodness I have a new iPod nano to block out his useless "commentary" in the postseason.

One word. Nice

Posted by: Mary at October 6, 2005 09:40 AM

Oooo OOOO... over here, BadAndy48!!!!

If you click my name you will find a site dedicated to the pursuit of having Joe Morgan fired.

They do amazingly funny and ACCURATE analysis/tear-ups of all sports commentary... but focus on ignorance of Morgan.

Beware though, the site rivals BG in volume of sass...

McCarver's partner, that little Buck guy, is just about as goofy - and I loved his dad.

I tried to listen to 1130 AM, but the radio broadcast was about a second ahead of the t.v. and came in too scratchy.

Posted by: nailbiter at October 6, 2005 10:12 AM

When the Angels played the Giants in the WS, I was watching the games with a buddy who is a huge Giants fan. McCarver was so annoying to him that we ended up watching the game in spanish with me doing the translations.

After the first game of trying this out he said it was better than anything he would have heard by McCarver. He enjoyed the series (except for how it ended) and I was kept interested by doing my best UN interpreter impression.

McCarver is bad but I rememeber Reggie Jackson doing Angels games on TV and let me tell you that was awful in a way that maybe even McCarver can't beat.

Posted by: caluofmn1991 at October 6, 2005 10:15 AM

EXACTLY! This is a cause we can all get behind. Not that Skip Caray is an amazing broadcaster, but boy... sure beats McCarver.

Posted by: Billy at October 6, 2005 10:27 AM

McCarver is the worst and I think that is something all fans can agree on. Rick Sutcliffe is rocketing up the rankings on the annoying scale as well.

Gary Thorne, Tony Gywnn, and Sean McDonough all do a nice job when they work, why can't they call the Fox Games ? The amazing thing is that Fox allows Joe and Tim and keep doing games even though everyone hates them. Baffling !!!!!

Posted by: mike at October 6, 2005 11:30 AM

Right on! I was watching the Yankees/Angels game they were calling the other night. While Vlad was up they got into a discussion on how Vlad's able to make solid contact on balls way out of the strike zone. To add emphasis to this point, McCarver offered this gem:

"Guerrero's strike zone starts when he gets out of bed in the morning!"

I'm still trying to figure out what he was trying to say. I was quite literally sitting there in stunned silence for a few seconds while I tried to make sense of that. I'm no closer now than I was then.

Posted by: Skorch at October 6, 2005 11:31 AM

Skorch -

that comment by McCarver makes no Truckin' sense at all!!
I think MLB would benefit if they would let Bert and Dick call a few games nationally - while Bert may stumble over a few names and words - he will tell you flat out if the Twins messed up. He is an objective 'homer' - IMO

Ohh names - every sports announcer should learn or at least find out how to pronounce an athlete's name correctly or what it is Brandon Arroyo ahem - that drives me Truckin' nuts!!!

Hell I think my sister would be better them McCarver - at least she's funny - well she thinks she is - =)

Batlings,

I've been enjoying another blog (It's okay to read two blogs, isn't it Batgirl?) called "Fire Joe Morgan" for some time now.

www.firejoemorgan.com

You really should check that one out. The writers chronicle the absolute stupidity of Joe Morgan and his cohorts on ESPN and Fox.

I've hated Joe Morgan ever since he remarked that "Sometimes the best team doesn't always win" after the Twins beat the A's in the 2002 ALDS.

Posted by: domedawg at October 6, 2005 12:02 PM

I have always thought for national and playoff games they should take one broadcaster from each team. This way everyone gets someone they like, names are pronounced correctly and there is the potential for some interesting dialogue.

I agree with Ellen, that last Twins game on ESPN was so terrible, I had to turn it off. I have never heard so many mistakes in a game. You'd think they would make some attempt to get things right.

Posted by: mp at October 6, 2005 12:34 PM

How come nobody mentioned Steve Phillips--he did Stros/braves. He mispronounced Oswalt, he didnt know that Bergman played 1B all year with Bagwell hurt.

I second motion that each team provide one announcer for FOX.

Posted by: DC Twins Fan at October 6, 2005 01:00 PM

I know I am almost alone in this but I like Jon Miller. I think he is low-key and well-informed, and if paired with a better color guy, would be quite acceptable. I pretty much never agree with Joe Morgan but he doesn't bother me so much, I guess because he strikes me as not so much stupid and insane (like McCarver) just opinionated and wrong.

I honestly think that FOX doesn't care if everybody hates Tim McCarver, in fact, they probably see it as a plus, on the theory that bad publicity is better than no publicity. What are you going to do, not watch the playoffs?

The idea of using local broadcasters is brilliant. I would suggest using one national broadcaster and then the color guy from the home team. I believe they do that on Fox sometimes during the regular season and I think it's very smart. (Of course, you realize what that would mean during the current Sox-Sox series.....)

Domedawg,

I actually linked to that one above a bit ago (didn't specify it by name, though), but I appreciate the fact that there is someone else who enjoys that blog.

Posted by: Eric at October 6, 2005 01:27 PM

RD likes Jon Miller too. Working with the wrong color commentator could make even the great Ernie Harwell sound like, ummmm, John Gordon.

Miller also does the absolute best impersonation of the late Bob Casey introducing Kirby Puckett. When he was the Baltimore play-by-play guy, he used to come into the Orioles press box, grab the mike away from their p-a guy and "do Casey" when Puckett came to bat. Kirby would look up and the other guys would be craning their necks from the dugout. Joe Morgan totally brings down Miller.

As for Buck-and-McCarver, all I can say is I'd rather listen to the King (from the Burger King ads), with Scooter doing the color. Who killed Scooter, anyway?

Posted by: RonDavis at October 6, 2005 01:55 PM

As CarrieICL posted in the BatCave,

"(Joe) Buck crawls into Jeter's ass for the entire postseason, then pokes his head out in February to tell us whether it will be six more weeks until spring training."

And she gets full credit for this one...

Posted by: heraldguy at October 6, 2005 01:59 PM

Carrie -- HA! Thanks for the relay, Heraldguy.

I'm with all of you -- and what appears to be a national consensus among people not employed by FOX -- that McCarver/Buck make the post-season almost unlistenable. Shudder.

I don't have quite the degree of disdain for Jon Miller, though. I'm with Wordsmith on that point. Yes, he gets more stuff wrong when not discussing the Yankees and Red Sox. But then, his bosses have him doing play-by-play for about sixty Yankees or Red Sox or Yankees/Red Sox games over the course of a season. I think I get where his comfort level comes from.

But I still think that there must be better announcers out there. There are great local announcers in most cities that aren't named Chicago. Phil Niehaus in Seattle is really a pleasure to listen to. And what ever happened to Kitty Kaat? I used to like it when he did some national broadcasts.

I just find it hard to believe that the talent pool is so shallow that we have to gill-net something like McCarver for the biggest bash of the year.

Posted by: hrunting at October 6, 2005 02:47 PM

KittyKaat has become a McCarver-like blowhard since going to New York. He was merely an annoying know-it-all when he worked here.

Posted by: RonDavis at October 6, 2005 03:49 PM

Whether or not I agree with Joe Morgan all the time is irrelevant to me. He and John talk BASEBALL. At least I get the opportunity to agree/disagree with him on BASEBALL and what is happening ON THE FIELD.

By the laws of all things marketing, targeting McCarver, either pro or con, only helps keep him around. All feedback is subject to the mathematics of absolute value. It matters not what Google returns, only the number of hits associated with his name. It's low-viewership apathy that scares the decision makers, not hate. No matter how clever.

Congratulations to Jason Giambi and Ken Griffey on winning the Comeback Player of the Year Awards.

Posted by: mike at October 6, 2005 06:15 PM

hrunting - that's Dave Neihaus, but thanks for the props ;-) Dave's getting old and a little forgetful, but he's by far the best we've got here. I love the idea of bringing in a color guy from the home team for each game, but I'm scared to death that they'd use Ron Fairly for Seattle (if we ever get there again) and he makes Tim McCarver look like a genius.

The only redeeming thing about listening to Buck and McCarver is the little digs Buck makes at McCarver all the time ... Buck used to annoy me to no end, but I've found myself chuckling at him on occasion the last year or so.

As for Miller and Morgan ... if they could just once get through an entire game without spending at least an inning discussing Barry Bonds (regardless of who's actually playing in the game), I might die of shock. The Jeter love those two have pales in comparison to how far they've crawled up Bonds' butt. Both of them.

One game a couple of seasons ago they spent the entire game debating whether Babe Ruth called his home run. The ENTIRE GAME. I watch Sunday Night Baseball on mute now.
