Awesome Batgirl.

Posted by: tamile at August 17, 2005 12:33 AM

BG, this is truly brilliant. As was the result of the game.

Posted by: AT at August 17, 2005 12:36 AM

Amazingly done BG. A+++!

What about a poem for LNP on the basepaths? That play at 2B was just ugly.

2 down, 11 to go.

Posted by: TwinsInBoston at August 17, 2005 12:36 AM

Wow. What an amazing game. Can we talk about Joe's 3 doubles? And the amazing bullpen work? JC? JC? 2 innings, no runs?!? Nice!

My squad, High Life, won their second kickball game of the year in a 3-0 whitewash tonight, improving to 2-0 on the season. If any of you care.

Posted by: Haplo at August 17, 2005 12:37 AM

Bravo bat-girl. Do I sense a new haiku contest? And . . . thank you Shaggy Guerrier, for sitting those bitches down. And dearest Joe Mauer, my boy, thank you for the three doubles, and calling A.J. on his foul tip. You rule.

Dear Ozzie Guillen,

Stop arguing. All you want is show time!

Reprovingly,
Hannah

Posted by: Hannah (the second) at August 17, 2005 12:38 AM

ahhhh... I shamelessly gave Shaggy a place on my boyfriend list a few weeks ago, and I'm proud to say he's cemented himself there. four more innings of scoreless relief. *sigh*

Batgirl, your haiku warms my heart.

(and I really do feel sad for poor Adkins, whose ERA shot up from 6.75 to 17.18. that's just... well, too bad for him.)

Posted by: kafumbly at August 17, 2005 12:52 AM

The Garcia/Morneau and Radke haiku (haikus?) are my favorite.

Posted by: neutrino boi at August 17, 2005 01:10 AM

Nothing warms my heart more than bathaiku. Well, nothing except for The Twins beating the Bitchsox. *Tear* Beautiful.

Posted by: Tinger at August 17, 2005 03:32 AM

Batgirl, I love you!

Genius. Pure genius.

Anybody else a little, uh, SLEEPY today?

*Yawn...*

Posted by: TwinsGoddess at August 17, 2005 06:52 AM

I fell asleep in the 14th inning, And I was terrified to find out the score this morning. Thank God. I just watched the highlights and that inning was wonderful. Bitch Sox falling everywhere...

Posted by: aurora at August 17, 2005 07:01 AM

Nothing like some beautiful poetry to help you wake up after a late night of baseball! Very well done Batgirl.
Personal favorite: Suck it smart ball!
HaHaHa!!

Awesome *big yawn*

Posted by: CarrieICL at August 17, 2005 07:57 AM

Ah - who doesn't love poetry in the am - FABULOUS!! Love the one about LNP!!!

Ok I admit - I went to bed after JC gave up a hit - pleasantly surprised when I saw the score this morning!! Hey JC - you need to pitch like you did last night more often - then people will like you again.

Shaggy -you're my hero - thanks for the bitchin' pitching - I'm going to give you a big on Monday at Unplugged with LNP =)

Much Love
Wonder Woman

Posted by: Wonder Woman at August 17, 2005 08:08 AM

The difference in last night's game? The bullpens came down to "The Pitcher That Fans Wail When We Bring Him In" for both teams. Our pitcher surprised us pleasantly. Theirs didn't.

I fear you, J.Ro,
As a Twins fan who wants wins.
You came through last night!

(How many bloggers, sports writers, etc., swore last night in the ninth inning when they had to re-write their entire piece? I'd like to see the first versions...)

To My Dear Bitch Sox
Bet It Sucked To Lose Again
What You Gonna Do?

Hmmm, let's see....yes, I just checked, aaanndd there are reasons I shouldn't be writing haikus. End program.

Posted by: jclund at August 17, 2005 08:36 AM

Dear Batgirl,

Inspired, truly inspired work. I love the part about LNP putting the 'short' in shortstop. HA!

Your friend,
MN.Minx

Posted by: mn.minx at August 17, 2005 08:43 AM

I may not know much about poetry, but I know what I like. I like what BG writes. Twins stomping Bitch Sox certainly makes me smile with glee too.

Posted by: JaerBesan at August 17, 2005 08:44 AM

Thanks BG...I feel smarter and more cultured having read that!

Posted by: SDave at August 17, 2005 08:45 AM

Beatiful work, Batgirl. You are an artist and a genius.

I like the "short in shortstop" one too.

Posted by: k-bro at August 17, 2005 08:57 AM

I [heart] BatHaiku in the morning! Too bad I couldn't stay up for those last couple of innings last night.

Posted by: ndtf at August 17, 2005 09:03 AM

That was fabulous! just the thing to wake me up after sixteen innings. I love shaggy so much right now... and i hope they give the chairman a day off today because his knees must be killing him! hopefully they can win today twice!

Posted by: Hannah! at August 17, 2005 09:09 AM

Look at the bottom left of that last one...

Almost looks like "L-Rod."

Did our beloved and miniscule utililty infielder aid BG in the creation of these lovely prints?

Posted by: Torhu at August 17, 2005 09:14 AM

"The Doctor will see you now"

Brilliant!

I almost, ALMOST felt sorry for Adkins. I mean, he comes out to pitch and they show his stats, and I look at my wife and say, "Awesome." I mean, c'mon, an ERA pushing 8.00 and an opponent's BA nearing 4.00? After only 2 appearances? Just what we needed.

Posted by: Salt-Man Z at August 17, 2005 09:17 AM

And I hate to point this out, but

"Down by one in the ninth"

has 6 syllables, when it should have only 5.

:: hides ::

Posted by: Salt-Man Z at August 17, 2005 09:19 AM

Oops. In my first post (this being my third in a row) I said Adkins' opponent's BA was pushing 4.00.

Obviously, what I mean to say was, it was pushing .400.

(Though it sure felt like 4.000 during the 16th last night!)

Posted by: Salt-Man Z at August 17, 2005 09:22 AM

Too tired to think
Batgirl is truly profound
This Twins fan thanks you

Posted by: Sandee at August 17, 2005 09:29 AM

To BG and the 'lings-

Haiku, 16 innings, shutout pitching from our relievers, bitch sox have lost 4 in a row, Twins win. A terrific night and morning to wake up to

cheers, kal

p.s. I "enjoyed" the B.Sox coach bitching about a play on first base (whatever that was about) after the fact. just bitchy.

Posted by: kal at August 17, 2005 09:30 AM

These Haikus would make such lovely T shirts. I'd like one that says "The Doctor will see you now."

Posted by: Spike at August 17, 2005 09:44 AM

Batgirl, you inspire me. I sent my morning status report in haiku form. As I lack Batgirl's wit, my work may not be as well received.

Posted by: yakul at August 17, 2005 09:50 AM

Dear Mr. Z,

Ah, crap. It was late.

Sincerely,
Batgirl

Posted by: Batgirl at August 17, 2005 10:16 AM

You continue to outdo yourself, BG. This is a classic!

So suck it, smartball! love it!

Posted by: JimCrikket at August 17, 2005 10:17 AM

Called Sweet-n-Sassy
In the ninth to blame Radke
Cuddyer went BOOM!

Posted by: RonDavis at August 17, 2005 11:25 AM

"The Doctor will see you now" - That was a beautiful hit!
Yes Spike, that would make an awesome shirt.

Posted by: Tracie at August 17, 2005 11:30 AM

Despite being far from poetic in nature, I can't resist coming up with one for perhaps my favorite point of the game.

Pitch up and inside.
"Ball hit bat!" pointed out Joe.
Have a seat, AJ.

Posted by: JimCrikket at August 17, 2005 11:31 AM

I'm so very sleepy.

I love the haiku.

I love the Twins.

Posted by: Laurel at August 17, 2005 11:56 AM

I like the LeCroy one the best. He was probably saying the same thing! "Someone, please run for me!"

Posted by: Ryan at August 17, 2005 12:04 PM

then, of course, there was LNP on second base in what, only now after the win, might be considered a little humorous.

"I'm gonna go now..."
Really... Im gonna steal third."
"I'm gonna... woops... damn!"

Posted by: JimCrikket at August 17, 2005 12:12 PM

Love the poems, but did anyone else notice that Cuddyer and Morneau didn't get any fireworks when they hit those amazing homers but that Everret did?? Even if that is his home park i still believe everyone would enjoy fireworks for a job well done.

Posted by: happycanadian at August 17, 2005 12:27 PM

I still think the fireworks are a lame exaggeration...and a gross waste of money and time.

Seriously, they've fired off the fireworks for a homerun when the Sox were losing by like 6 runs. I've seen it, it's riddiculous.

Fireworks after a dinger should be sacred, and saved for only the most special. Like the go ahead or tying homer. Or most definately, the walk-off.

Posted by: Torhu at August 17, 2005 01:01 PM

I agree with Torhu about the usage of fireworks. There's something poetic about the way that fireworks light up a baseball diamond after a thrilling victory/homer/etc. That is what summer is really all about.

Posted by: ForMorneau at August 17, 2005 01:07 PM

I say, if the BitchSox want to waste money on fireworks for meaningless homeruns, let them. Every dollar spent on fireworks is a dollar not available to pay a ballplayer. :)

I think they should fire them off for every base hit... maybe even every walk!

Posted by: JimCrikket at August 17, 2005 01:23 PM

Bat Girl and Twinkie Fans-

Love your site, Bat Girl. I am in fact a ChiSox fan, but I still enjoy your writing, and your haikus particularly. This is my first post here.

I wanted to pass on something to all of you that you probably didn't get to hear last night, since it came from the mouth of Sox announcer Ken "Hawk" Harrelson, on local Chicago brodcast.

In short, Hawk and DJ were lauding former Twins picther Bert Blyleven, who apparently announces Twins games on TV or radio, as they kept showing him in the booth. They couldn't say enough great things about The Dutchman - 3rd all time in K's, I think 4th in innings pitched, and otherwise top 10 or 20 in all sorts of other categories like wins, shutouts, etc. Should be in HOF. They talked about it for most of a half-inning (there wasn't much good going on for the Sox to talk about). That was the jist. And I agree - he belongs.

Anyway, thought you might all want to know. Props where due.

And by the way, I have to say the fireworks are pretty cool. If you don't like them, it's 'cause you were just lit up.

North side Sox fan

Posted by: Matt at August 17, 2005 01:24 PM

Will these be available as framed art?

Posted by: Saajak at August 17, 2005 01:32 PM

Dear Mr. Matt,

The thing I hate about the fireworks is when you're losing by ten runs in the ninth and someone hits a solo home run and the fireworks go off. It always strikes BG as kind of silly.

I am very glad to know about the props from Hawk. He does grate on Batgirl quite a bit, but I appreciate knowing this. It seems everyone thinks Bert should be in the Hall except the people voting.

Sincerely,
BG

Posted by: Batgirl at August 17, 2005 01:32 PM

This team does deserve better than Hawk and DJ.

Advice for anyone not from Chicago who will be in Chicago and wants to watch a Sox game: mute the TV and dial in AM 1000. John Rooney and Ed Farmer are the Sox radio announcers, and they are far better than the TV guys.

And if we're down 10 runs, and someone hits a solo HR, I'm all for anything that might get the crowd going. Rallys have begun that way. Go Sox!

Posted by: Matt at August 17, 2005 01:42 PM

Over here in Iowa, I had no choice but to watch the Comcast broadcast with Hawk and DJ, since I can't even get a Twins radio broadcast down here. I will say that they both were not only lobbying for Bert last night but were all but fawning toward many of the Twins. (Guess it's easier to do that when youre up 14 games in the standings.)

I was a big "Hawk" fan when I was growing up in the 60s. He was my favorite non-Twin player. If you weren't a child of the 60s, you would never understand.

That said, I'd turn him off in a heartbeat tonight if I had any other choice.

Posted by: JimCrikket at August 17, 2005 01:54 PM

Ioway-

If you can get any of these stations:

Burlington, IA - KCPS-AM 1150
Davenport, IA - KJOC-AM 1170
Dubuque, IA - WDBQ-AM 1490

Do so. As long as you are not watching the game in HD, any delay should be negligible.

I lived in Ames for 5 years, and I could sometimes get Chicago AM stations direct, since AM carries so well. One of those should work.

Posted by: Matt at August 17, 2005 02:08 PM

(looks at feet and mumbles) Iwasmean, misterromero. I'msorry.

(end little-kid forced apology mode)

Posted by: twink at August 17, 2005 02:34 PM

twink, no need to apologize to JC Romero. he's been fine with bases empty. sure, a run here and there, but that'll happen. it's when he comes out with men on base that he sucks and I want him to lock himself in a closet instead of entering the game. I'm annoyed that he got the win. Shaggy was most deserving; too bad it didn't work out that way.

Posted by: kafumbly at August 17, 2005 02:52 PM

Overall, I am a large fan of the haikus, but I would prefer last years model of "US Hellular" to "US Bitchular". It seems to flow much better. Still, great and talented post.
