It seems that Joe Mauer found an interesting place to keep his chewing gum last night. Please see Sundappled Wood, where Frightwig's got the, um, juice.
Posted by Batgirl at August 17, 2005 10:32 AMhee hee... prank? I think so. hilarious? absolutely! I only wish I'd noticed during the game. perhaps I'll have to pay attention to the replay. I wonder in which inning it'll start today?
Posted by: kafumbly at August 17, 2005 10:55 AMI agree with the prank option too! But that definitely cracks me up.
Posted by: Meghan at August 17, 2005 10:58 AMAs I indicated in the BOD thread, I still think he just wanted it available for when he got on base or went back behind the plate. Note, it was only on the helmet for one at-bat, so obviously he found time later to get every last bit of flavor out of the gum.
Posted by: JimCrikket at August 17, 2005 11:59 AMDear readers,
BG must agree with Mr. Crikket. It is a quite likely scenario. And, once again, BG says "Gross."
Sincerely,
BG
haha its funny...but at the same time its gross...who would do that?!?!
Posted by: Mrs Mauer at August 17, 2005 12:31 PMAs gross as it might be or as funny a prank it was for whoever put it there, the Twins won last night. As a sport with almost as many superstitions as Hockey, I have to believe it will show up again tonight. How about 2 or 3 pieces for extra good karma and a victory in 9 innings? As much fun as 16 inning games are, they go really late and make batlings with jobs exhausted the next day.
Posted by: TwinsinBoston at August 17, 2005 12:31 PMHey, if it works...it works.
There are, after all, far worse places it could be.
Posted by: Torhu8 at August 17, 2005 12:58 PMAlas, I must confess that I spoke from personal experience. As a much younger man, I did indeed "store" my gum in similar manners during games.
In fact, I recall that there is an old Whitey Ford baseball card from the early 60s on which there is a visible white "button" on the top of Ford's yankees cap. It looks like the normal cap button but we all know they yankees do not have a white button on their caps. Conjecture is that Whitey was "storing" his gum during the picture-taking session.
And yes, Torhu, there certainly are far worse places... especially for a catcher.
Posted by: JimCrikket at August 17, 2005 01:17 PMoh, man... if he was "storing" his gum, well, that is indeed just gross. but still very funny. I just hope he cleans his batting helmet on a regular basis, then. at least there's not pine tar on it.
Posted by: kafumbly at August 17, 2005 02:46 PMNext thing you know he'll be storing his gum all sorts of places. Maybe it is our good luck charm! So what works works, but what would have happened had he had to slide on an extra base hit? Would he take it off his helmet while going around first?
All in all, it's kind of icky, unless it was a prank, than ha ha. Next time, it just might be a kick me sign!
Posted by: Hannah (the second) at August 17, 2005 03:17 PMDear (other) hannah:
I think that all the twins should just put kick me signs on the white sox! that would be fun...
something tells me that all the players may sport this tonight on their helmets, just for the heck of it. i hate not having cable!
Posted by: hannah! at August 17, 2005 03:39 PMHannah, and hannah!,
Either way (prank or no prank, again tonight or not again), how can you NOT love this team. There is no funner and hotter team out there.
Yours in the world of Bats,
Megan
P.S. I'm all for the Kick Me signs (on the white sox players of course) :D
Posted by: meg at August 17, 2005 03:51 PMi noticed that during the game...
i bet aj did it cause he's jealous.
Posted by: Renae at August 17, 2005 05:22 PMAll i can say is.... ouch, yuck, why. How can we get swept by a team with Matt LeCroy and Bret Abernathy in the starting lineup? In all fairness, congrats on the sweep Twinkie fans... hopefully we'll give you at least a challenge next time.
Posted by: Marky Mark at August 17, 2005 09:10 PM... why is it not possible to bat while chewing gum?
