I agree with the prank option too! But that definitely cracks me up.

As I indicated in the BOD thread, I still think he just wanted it available for when he got on base or went back behind the plate. Note, it was only on the helmet for one at-bat, so obviously he found time later to get every last bit of flavor out of the gum.

As gross as it might be or as funny a prank it was for whoever put it there, the Twins won last night. As a sport with almost as many superstitions as Hockey, I have to believe it will show up again tonight. How about 2 or 3 pieces for extra good karma and a victory in 9 innings? As much fun as 16 inning games are, they go really late and make batlings with jobs exhausted the next day.

Alas, I must confess that I spoke from personal experience. As a much younger man, I did indeed "store" my gum in similar manners during games.

In fact, I recall that there is an old Whitey Ford baseball card from the early 60s on which there is a visible white "button" on the top of Ford's yankees cap. It looks like the normal cap button but we all know they yankees do not have a white button on their caps. Conjecture is that Whitey was "storing" his gum during the picture-taking session.

And yes, Torhu, there certainly are far worse places... especially for a catcher.

oh, man... if he was "storing" his gum, well, that is indeed just gross. but still very funny. I just hope he cleans his batting helmet on a regular basis, then. at least there's not pine tar on it.

Next thing you know he'll be storing his gum all sorts of places. Maybe it is our good luck charm! So what works works, but what would have happened had he had to slide on an extra base hit? Would he take it off his helmet while going around first?

All in all, it's kind of icky, unless it was a prank, than ha ha. Next time, it just might be a kick me sign!

All i can say is.... ouch, yuck, why. How can we get swept by a team with Matt LeCroy and Bret Abernathy in the starting lineup? In all fairness, congrats on the sweep Twinkie fans... hopefully we'll give you at least a challenge next time.
