Morning Reading

It's about time. Korea has outlawed cabbage in baseball caps. Also, Batling Pander has the edge on Gardy's motivational speech techniques in his June Twin Blues (This won't work on Explorer.) And the webzine McSweeney's tells us Baseball Knowlege Will Not Help You Pick Up Girls. Clearly, this guy has never read Batgirl.

EDIT: You must read this piece from USA Today (Thanks to MK for the heads up) Father's Drug Addiction is Driving Torii Hunter Away.

"If my heart were made of bases, you'd be Scott Podsednik."

BEST PICK-UP LINE EVER.

Is anyone else having problems seeing the pictures in June Twins Blues?

Posted by: ndtf at June 24, 2005 12:31 PM

nope.

Pander, that was pretty funny.

Posted by: kafumbly at June 24, 2005 12:33 PM

I don't understand what he's talking about. Every one of those lines would work on ME.

I am. Wonder if it's work-related.

Here's a little afternoon reading, too:

The pics won't work for me either. Maybe it's Internet Explorer.

Posted by: annun at June 24, 2005 01:04 PM

*checks site using Netscape*

*returns to Batgirl*

Yep, definitely Internet Explorer's fault. If you can access Netscape, you should be able to see the pics.

P.S. Jean Reno is totally awesome.

But I was just starting to get the hang of the Salsa competition, and now they're going to do away with it?

To be honest, I have to say I'm a little disappointed in yall. You'd respond to a pick up line ABOUT A BITCH SOX? If it was you'd be Torii Hunter (who, as we all know, is THE MOST EXCITING BASERUNNER IN BASEBALL), that'd be one thing. But Posednik? A Bitch Sox?

Posted by: TBird41 at June 24, 2005 01:40 PM

Some Twins themed lines:

If my heart was a home run ball, you'd be Torii Hunter.

or

Baby, I want you more than a 4th consecutive AL Central title.

or

There are only a two perfect things in this world: Johan's changeup and you

or

You're hotter than Gardy after the Twins' bench gets warmed

I think I could come up with these alllll day. I might have to try them out next time I'm in MN

Whoops, TBird. What was I thinking?

I think we were both trying to prove Mr. Paulas wrong. Baseball + pick-up lines = yay-ness!

And I must admit, yours are far better.

Posted by: annun at June 24, 2005 03:22 PM

"I would trade Albert Pujols and Vladimir Guerrero for a date with you."

I would LOVE someone to say that to me. If he said Scott Rolen instead of Guerrero, I'd ... well, I think I'll just stop there.

Pardon the digression, but allow me to echo the folks over at Twins Territory: how in the world did we miss this piece last week? And how can you *not* root for Torii Hunter after reading it?

Like the time he wrote ...

What I'd like to know is why it always takes something like this being publicized for fans to think/say, "Gee, these guys are human beings. Now that I know this is going on in his life, I'll treat/view him differently."

Not everyone's personal travails are in USA Today. Doesn't mean they don't exist. You should always treat and view players with courtesy, respect and consideration, even when they screw up... same as you would people in any other profession. You never know what's going on in their lives that might make it difficult for them to focus--nor should you even need to. Think about that next time you feel like booing someone.

Posted by: LaurieNY at June 24, 2005 05:06 PM

Laurie, I think you're right that the players do deserve our respect, just like other people. The reason they're treated differently, I think, is that they seem so different from us. They get paid more than us, and they play a game that many of us would play for free (that is, if we had the talent, and money wasn't a problem). This makes many folks forget that pro athletes are real people. We don't usually consider the fact that they might have some very difficult problems in their personal lives.

Even for many fans who do try to respect the players, articles like this really bring home the point, and make us realize our shared humanity.

The Torri article was am interesting read and I think it does show that he is a good hearted person, when not stealing hrs from them, I wish nothing but good things for him.

Posted by: mike at June 24, 2005 07:04 PM

You all missed that Torii article when it came out because you're not going to the rest of the Twins blogs. Gleeman and Seth both linked to that article LAST WEEK.

Posted by: Joe at June 24, 2005 09:02 PM

Joe, it was actually posted in the comments here, but a lot of people probably missed it. Lay off the pinch-bloggers.

Posted by: Nick at June 24, 2005 09:09 PM

Did I say anything about the pinch bloggers? I never even come to this site. Just popped in courtesy of SBG and Gleeman's links today. Bat-Girl is headline news today.

Posted by: Joe at June 24, 2005 09:10 PM

Joe,

While I don't hit *all* the Twins blogs, I do in fact read both Gleeman and Seth (Seth less so because things on his page tend to float away from where they should be in my browser of choice), among others. And perhaps my mind is tired and my eyes glazed for I do not remember seeing something on their sites on the article, nor have I seen any reference going back in their archives. Would you be so kind as to point them out?

Posted by: mk at June 24, 2005 10:01 PM

We need a new hitting coach...

Posted by: TwinsInBoston at June 24, 2005 10:38 PM

mk,

I actually saw that article last week courtesy of a link provided by a Sox troll at the MLB Twins site. He made a stupid remark about Hunter's father's addiction, and was promptly chastised by a multitude of Twins and Sox fans alike.

About the cabbage: I was informed that Willie Stargell put cabbage leaves under his cap too. I was actually informed that Stargell's cabbage leaves were soaked in vinegar.

Joe, I was out of town for two weeks with no internet access, so no, I did not catch the story.

Posted by: Batgirl at June 25, 2005 08:50 AM

Well I hadn't seen it either, so thank you for linking to it, Bat Girl.

But we all know that once something is posted once on the internet IT MAY NEVER BE POSTED AGAIN, so thanks for that Joe.

Posted by: Gendo at June 25, 2005 07:00 PM

Hi there. I've heard that now that you're beloved Twins are 10 1/2 GB, you can't handle the same shit you've been dealing out over the past couple years. Is this true? Is the "great" Bat-girl unable to accept defeat? Well, just to make your day a little bit brighter, I think I'll tell you about a stat I found the other day. No team that has held a 10 or more game lead in the month of June has ever failed to make the playoffs. I wonder what this sorry excuse of a blog will look like when you're watching the Sox in the playoffs. Better yet, I wonder how long this comment will go unedited, or if it will just be nuked on site. Have a great day and enjoy missing the playoffs in second place!

Posted by: Soxfan at June 26, 2005 01:46 AM

Dear Mr Fan,

Thank you so much for your input. Actually, it was the chatter that caused BG to make changes in her comments policy. She's always deleted comments by trolls!

Helpfully,
BG

Posted by: Batgirl at June 26, 2005 06:49 AM

Dear SoxFan,

If this is such a "sorry excuse for a blog," why do you bother frequenting the site? And why did you steal your pseudonym from my friend SoxFan, who is an intelligent, interesting person who never had the poor taste to belittle anyone, even his team's biggest rival?

Posted by: Anita at June 26, 2005 07:22 AM

Well, I guess I was misinformed. I apologize for the misunderstanding on my part. As for "stealing a pseudonym" from someone, that was not my intention either. I really had no idea that there was another person on here called "Soxfan", since it was my first time here after reading several things about this blog on other blogs and message boards. I still hate the Twins though, so I'll leave you with a quote from your very own all-star, gold glove CF, Torii Hunter.

"We can't keep up with the White Sox -- they're ripping through everybody," Hunter said. "They've got the best record in the major leagues. If people say we need to keep up with the White Sox, then we've got no chance."

Posted by: Soxfan at June 26, 2005 10:00 AM

Soxfan - I don't doubt that Torii said that. Frankly your Sox are playing phenomenally well. Respect is due, and if your team keeps playing at the pace they are he's only being realistic. Kudos to him for not being a brainless cheerleader.

There's another team in the AL Central that had several vocal players for the past three seasons that would whine and cry about the Twins winning the division even though that team was "better than the Twins." Hint: it wasn't the Royals.

Feel free to stick around, you don't have to love the Twins, there are plenty of people coming here that like another team. Batgirl is a terrific writer and regardless of your feelings for the team she writes about, she's entertaining as hell. Might I suggest http://www.bat-girl.com/archives/000785.php from the archives for starters when Carl Everett beat the hell out of our pitching earlier this season?
