The Twins continued their dominance of the Grapefruit League (okay, their slow battle to .500, but it's been going really well lately, once we've started playing, like, real baseball players). Terry Tiffee went 3 for 3 and had two errors, and Juan Castro went 2 for 3 but totally didn't have any errors. And Stewie went yard, so Newmie got to touch his butt. We've got pictures, thanks to Art from Fort Myers.

See?

Okay, we've got you surrounded. Put the World Series Ball down.

On one hand, he broke up a double play.

On the other...

Um, did I mention ESPN picked me as the best baserunner?

Starting at second base, a good day.

Making a throw for once, fabulous.

Spring training proposal?

Priceless.
Looks like Al Newman has as much of a butt fetish as some of the Batlings! :)
Win Twins!
Posted by: talldrinkowater at March 24, 2005 11:18 PMDid I just see the scroll on the bottom of ESPN right? Is someone pulling my leg?? There was a game called today because of A SWARM OF BEES???
Posted by: mmmarkiep at March 24, 2005 11:43 PMIn #4, it looks like Tiffe is trying to field the wrong balls.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at March 24, 2005 11:45 PMmmmarkiep, you did not see wrong. A game was suspended from a swarm of bees. There's a link on espn I'm sure, but I'm too tired to go find it, sorry.
Posted by: IcePhoenix at March 25, 2005 04:11 AMI thought Governor Pawlenty was already married.
I think the crowd thought it was Pawlenty also, as when it became apparent that he was going to pop the question, chants of "no, no, no" rang out.
Posted by: insider at March 25, 2005 08:15 AMlmao that World Series ball caption was priceless. As was the news about the bees.

Now I keep thinking about that scene in Tommy Boy. BEES!!!
Posted by: sacky at March 25, 2005 08:24 AMIf you look closely, you can actually see what appear to be bees chasing Darren Oliver in the ESPN.com picture
lol it's only funny because nobody was hurt
Posted by: sacky at March 25, 2005 08:29 AMActually it was John Belushi and the Killer Bees
And lets not have another episode of the "Naked Batting Practice" double entendre incident with the "Tiffe is trying to field the wrong balls" comment.
(I can't believe I spelled double entendre right)
Posted by: Me at March 25, 2005 09:48 AMI'm just sayin' is all.
On a different note, let's talk contests. There are a couple of them at TwinsBaseball.com. One by Pepsi gives you free access to the Opening Day games on MLB TV on your computer just for entering the contest. The other is for free home opener tickets which may or may not be better than the ones you already have.
Finally, I have a question. I recall that some lady won a contest (two years in a row now) for finding a "golden ticket" or some such thing that netted her free season tickets. I recall thinking that I'd never heard of the contest. Now, I'm wondering if any of you have heard of it, when does it start/end and where would I find the clues? It's dumb to have a contest but not tell anybody, in my opinion. I promise, if I win, I'll offer up on BatGirl any game tickets I don't use for free.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at March 25, 2005 10:48 AMPretty pictures:)
Posted by: Stacy at March 25, 2005 12:09 PMMaybe you're thinking of Willie Wonka? His factory does kind of remind me of the Metroheap (well, without the umpa-loompas, or candy, or . . . well all of the other fun stuff . . . OK, they don't resemble each other in the least, but the old guy that played the grandpa does kinda look like Carl Pohlad).
I need more to do at work.
Posted by: Me at March 25, 2005 12:21 PMDear mmmmarkiep,
Yes, one of the newspapers ran a "golden ticket" contest last season. Sort of like the mdallion hunt for the winter carnival I think.
They printed clues each day, and the winner got full season tickets and a prize package including Twins jacket and all kinds of other goodies...autographed stuff etc...
I don't know if it was the Strib or the Pioneer Press, and I haven't heard if they plan to do it again...

Posted by: bubblemint at March 25, 2005 12:31 PMIt seens the Twins have a new pitcher worth watching for in the rotation, from the mntwins.com front-page summary of today's game:
"Starter Brade Rake dominated the Red Sox on Friday, allowing one run and five hits while striking out five and walking none over six innings in the Twins' 5-1 victory. Jacque Jones, Michael Restovich and Michael Cuddyer each launched solo homers."
Brade?
Posted by: Skorch at March 25, 2005 02:47 PMYes, he's such a Rake!
Has anyone checked the box scores for today's game yet?
Posted by: Saajak at March 25, 2005 03:06 PMNevermind. Just checked and I guess we're not the only team with problems getting baserunners across home plate! Boston had 90(?) hits and only one run scored.
Posted by: Saajak at March 25, 2005 03:10 PMVery sad news for Twins (and baseball) fans, WCCO TV just announced that public address announcer Bob Casey has passed away. He had been battling cancer for some time.
There were stories Saturday of his failing health and that he had been given last rites. Also a bit that makes it just a bit tougher to dislike Alex Rodriguez.
We'll miss you, Casey. And the delightful way you mangled so many names.
Posted by: double-a at March 27, 2005 10:54 AMDitto about Bob Casey. He was the best in the business and will be missed. My favorite mangled name. Steve Lom-bin-dozzi.
Posted by: Brundlefly at March 27, 2005 11:43 AMmmmarkiep,
The "Golden Ticket" contest was in the Star Tribune a couple years ago. I don't know if they did it last year, because I didn't hear a word about it. To be honest, I don't remember how I heard about it two years ago either. It was essentially a copy of the St. Paul Winter Medallion Hunt, except the Golden Ticket could be found in any Minneapolis park, rather than a St. Paul park. I seem to remember it taking place during opening week, possibly leading right up to the home opener. I remember the prizes being very nice though: season tickets, some autographed memorabilia, etc.
