There's nothing more pathetic than a soap opera that knows it's on its way out, yet still tries desperately to hang on. Yesterday, previews for ATLT promised Doug Mientkiewicz would return to the line-up. Oh, the drama! Oh, the intrigue! But then the writers pulled a switch—Dougie benched again. Why? Bait and switch tactics or honest drama? Only you, the viewer, can decide.
Well, for today's special afternoon episode, we'll be featuring:
Outfield: Ford, Hunter, Jones
1B: Dr. Morneau
DH: Stewart
Benched: Dougie Baseball
Stay tuned tomorrow, for another (exciting?) episode of:

I posted this a little bit ago ago in response to the last episode of "ATLT", and Bat-reader Chaz seems to be on board as well. Anyhow, to plagiarize my bad self: It is conceivable that Dougie could get 1 or 2 more games in at the Dome this weekend. As many of us as possible should show up and go apeshit cheering for him. A nice hearty "Dougie!" chant should bring tears to his eyes. I'm up for either/both games if necessary, who's with me?
Dearest Mr. Skorch,
That is an excellent idea. Batgirl herself will be away for the weekend, and it breaks her heart she cannot go, but she encourages all of her beloved BatLings to go and scream for Dougie Defence.
Sincerely,
Batgirl
I don't think that makes any sense from a baseball standpoint :/
But go for it, maybe it'll work, which would be cool. I'll be at the July 31 game so I will I guess, see the final episode of ATLT Live and In Person.
Posted by: Mimiru at July 28, 2004 01:40 PMMimiru - I agree from a baseball standpoint Dougie probably *will* be gone by Friday, and most likely not in the starting lineup if he is still on the team this weekend, but if he is I think it would be a nice gesture. Especially considering that A) They're playing the Red Sox, which should be motivation enough for people to go and B) This could be the last time we ever see him.
Posted by: Skorch at July 28, 2004 01:51 PMIf you'll forgive some trade speculation, I read in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review today that Dougie is no longer being considered by the Pirates in a trade for Benson.
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/sports/pirateslive/s_205475.html
Apparently the Pirates want Restovich AND either Cuddyer or Kubel. No way that deal gets done.
So, is he actually going anywhere? I read a Boston Globe article that said the Red Sox were no longer going after Mientkiewicz because the injury to Trot Nixon made RF a higher priority.... There was some speculation in the offseason that the Braves wanted Jacque and Doug, so maybe that's still a go? anyone have thoughts on this? Do we get to keep Douglas after all?
Skorch, great idea. I wish I could be there.
Posted by: Chris at July 28, 2004 01:53 PMI believe Morneau heard the call of defense. Then he hit 2 homers* only to be robbed by the Bitch Sox.
Posted by: lackofintellect at July 28, 2004 02:28 PMSaturday's game will be my first Twins game of the season. It's photo day, where our Twins will walk around and the first 5000 will be on the field to take photos. To prevent them from eating us like Darling Nicky, they will be roped off, about 10 feet away. I think a couple "We Love You Doogie"s will be approriate if/when he waks by.
Posted by: amr at July 28, 2004 02:35 PMUgh. I have no doubt Doug will BECOME a clubhouse cancer if he isn't traded. I mean, how can you help it after the drama and confusion of the past week?
Posted by: Mimiru at July 28, 2004 02:53 PMI would like to know who has been responsible for this on-again, off-again rumor torment. Doug? The StarTribune? Someone within the Twins organization?
Whoever the leak was, I think this whole situation has been very, very unfair to the fans.
Of course we're going to be traumatized if/when Mientkiewicz leaves. So why drag it on for days and days? What exactly is the point of all this drama?
If he's going, let it be done with once and for all. If he's not, for cripe's sake, put us out of our misery.

Posted by: Chris at July 28, 2004 03:29 PMHmm... Mulholland's pitching the 9th... Benson on the way?
Posted by: Skorch at July 28, 2004 03:52 PMWay to help Old Mulholland out of a jam there, Cordell!
Uhm, Skorch, Muholland or the 5-spot in the rotation has been pitching on all the off days for a while. Even before the Dougie trade rumour, I had Radke pencilled in for Sat's game.

Posted by: amr at July 28, 2004 03:57 PMWHOA I can't believe they made it out of the bottom of the 9th.

Posted by: SDave at July 28, 2004 04:15 PMKickass.
AMR - You're probably right, I just thought it odd.
Posted by: Skorch at July 28, 2004 04:16 PMThat was awesome. Listening at work. My heart was pumping in the 9th. The DP made me clap, jump, and say "Yeargh" like I'm Howard Dean, and no one around me knows what I'm doing.
Gameday + WCCO = Close Second to TV.
Man, that was a playoff game for me. An immediate classic. Another plunk for Cordell. 2 on, no out into no one on, two outs on caught stealing. Two Morneau HRs called back. The double play in the 9th. Valentin's drop. Nathan's "Sit down bitch" to end it.
Better be on ESPN classic this weekend.
I'm giddy and happy and tingly and I get to see Sonic Youth tonight without missing a game.
Yay! Yay! Yay!
Posted by: amr at July 28, 2004 04:24 PMAMR - Have a good time at Sonic Youth. I'd completely forgotten they were coming to town this month, I thought it was in August sometime. I saw one of the opening bands a couple weeks back with Acid Mothers Temple. Three words to describe them: My Science Project. They look like they're sponsored by Radio Shack and very noisy/drony (which isn't too out of place considering Sonic Youth, but I didn't think much of them). If you think of it, send me a review.
Posted by: Skorch at July 28, 2004 04:30 PMI understand that Dougie was (OK..."is") a well-liked member of the team. But there are only a limited number of roster spots available. And these spots must be occupied by a combination of the best players available who can also fill the needed defensive positions.
We have been rather lucky around here in recent years. There has not been a wholesale roster flip since the dreadful days of Rich Becker (or Bich Recker as I tend to spoonerize it) and Matt Walbeck.
But the time for Dr Morneau is now.
We all know that a big slugger in the heart of the lineup is needed. We also all know that a handful of guys like LEEEEEWWWW and STEEWWW are the catalysts that fuel the team. If Dougie could play second and save us from Luis Oh-for-three-vas, while accepting that he'd never see a larger paycheck from the Twins, I'd be all for keeping him.
Alas, the team needs power at first and another solid arm in the rotation a lot more than a slick-fielding, grungy heart-throb.
I just wish the deal (whatever it might be) is announced soon.
Posted by: boomer at July 28, 2004 04:44 PMYankee Fan,
To do it like Kay, you have to say it with some spasmatic vibrato, like:
"The Twins win! Tha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-haa-haaaa Twinswin!"
P.S. At least two Sonic Youth fans here, and nobody remarked on the "Providence" reference by watt the other day?
