The cool thing about this postseason is, with the exception of the first Mets series, the team that was expected to win in just about every series lost. Unless you're a fan of one of those teams in which case "cool" is "bone-crushingly painful." But the Cards run, from essentially backing into the playoffs to World Series champs, was mighty impressive, and it showed, once again, you can predict nothing in the postseason (except maybe rainouts.) As for the Tigers, Batgirl is genuinely sorry it wasn't they celebrating--they had a terrific run, and Placido Polanco is so cute in his little hat. She can't shake the feeling that the Twins suck jumped hosts once again, and for that she is incredibly sorry. I don't know what the contagious period of this thing is, but let's have a nice long postseason, and let's scrub all those clubhouses real good, okay?
Posted by Batgirl at October 28, 2006 12:00 PMI was finding myself caring less about who won this series (caring more that it would just be entertaining). By Tuesday, I was hoping it would be whoever was at home... cause you know, it seems like its been a while since we got to see the home crowd celebrate a world series title. So congrats to the Cardinals fans for getting to see a championship clincher at home.
Posted by: TX Ken at October 28, 2006 01:10 PMHell, as I recall, they didn't even do a very good job of predicting the rainouts. :-)
Personally, I was hoping for a seven-game series for a change, but I'm happy the Cardinals won just because they were the underdogs... and I'm glad they won it at home.
Posted by: Adam at October 28, 2006 01:19 PMI, for one, am sorta glad it was the Cards and not the Tigs. I just couldn't bear to see another WS go to a division foe, even if I respect them and everything they did this season.
And I concur with TX Ken and Adam - good to see the home team celebrate.
And for now, I'll be anxiously scouring the net for offseason news on my beloved Twins. Can't wait until February!
Posted by: imprvyz at October 28, 2006 01:42 PMI'm glad the Cardinals won. I think it's because everytime I tried to root for the Tigers, the smirk of Magglio Ordonez would ruin it for me. And because my brother is a Cardinals fan, and this has made him happy. And because David Eckstein's plucky boyish charm reminds me of that movie where a kid gets to play in major league baseball and ends up winning a World Series, only this must be the sequel cause Exy already won a World Series. But mostly because the cardinal logo has always been my favorite in baseball. It's cute, isn't it? The bird is looking a little bit out of the side of its eye, like it has its game face on and means business, but it's just a cute little songbird, so you laugh and then find out the hard way that he meant business. Which, come to think of it, is exactly what I like about David Eckstein.
Posted by: Kurtis at October 28, 2006 02:18 PMLong postseason? Aside from the relief of not being subjected to Timmah and the rest of the Foxoids until next summer, I see little good at the outset of the Void.
OTOH, if a long winter will suffice to get the Frisco Kid back to full health, I can live with it.
Posted by: jeffstoned at October 28, 2006 03:39 PMWow. STL has ten titles now. That puts them i second all time behind the Yankees 600. We've got to start chiping away at that lead.......
Posted by: Nelson at October 28, 2006 04:05 PMI am not a Cardinals fan, but couldn't get myself to cheer for the Tigers. All season, Tiger trolls posted 'smack' on Twins messageboards. I find joy in the fact that they can EAT CROW all winter long.
Posted by: Bill at October 28, 2006 04:26 PMBy the way, Wainwrights curveball is NASTY! Glad he is in the National League.
Posted by: Bill at October 28, 2006 04:33 PMYAAAAYYYY CARDINALS!!
I'm very glad the Cardinals won, and not just because they are my favorite national league team. The fans here are FANTASTIC and they 100% deserved a World Series. A lot of the Cards fans I know personally are my age (20-21) and weren't even alive the last time the Cards won a WS (1982). And these fans are so devoted and so into it and so just everything a baseball fan should be, that they deserved this win.
St. Louis is such a great town for baseball. There is so much energy and enthusiasm that even if you come in not caring about the Cardinals, you can't live here and be around these people in the postseason and not start cheering for them. It's fabulous.
Walking around downtown the past couple days has just made me so incredibly happy because it is a place so full of baseball excitement. Every single bar has Cardinals memorabilia hanging in its windows and on its walls, tall buildings have signs hanging on them reading "Go Cards!" and the big fountain in front of the Arch spurts out red water.
This is a baseball town through and through, and finally they got payoff for it.
Oh, and my man David Eckstein got WS MVP :):) LOVE IT!
Posted by: anna at October 28, 2006 04:48 PMBG,
I heartily agree. That suck needs to go (except from the Yankees' clubhouse). I really like that Corvet that X got for winning WS MVP. I want to drive that thing SO badly. Oh, and will you be posting more pictures from Spring Training next year?
Imprvyz,
YES! I know! February seems like such a long way away, and I will search relentlessly for Twins news all winter long.
Posted by: TwinsPrincess at October 28, 2006 05:10 PMCongratulations to the cardinals! This cardinal run reminds me of the '87 twins run, but I was so little back then that I'm not sure it really counts for much.
I've had a day to think about things, and, well, the offseason sucks.
Posted by: Bob at October 28, 2006 07:51 PMPragmatically, this keeps some serious revenue out of the hands of Detriot, thus out of thier payroll next season.
Never anything wrong with that.
Posted by: JohnWayne at October 28, 2006 09:25 PMYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was so incrediably happy (sorry Tigers)-I'm glad the 'experts' were idiots - or so the sign said =)
The only bummer part - I couldn't enjoy this with my sister.
Finally a happy ending, well of course if our boys haf won it would have been one helluva an ending =)
Much Love

PS - SO's little Taguchi was the cutest!
So was Albert's little man and how come Scott Speizo's little guys didn't have the red soul patch =)
I was hoping that the Tigers would win, but as BG put it the Twins playoff sucking went to the A's then to the Tigers. Seeing the Tigers win would have been more incredible than the Cards since the Cards were pretty much the favs in that NL Central-but who picked Detroit to make the playoffs let alone the World Series? Probably no one! And they lost 119 games 3 years ago!!
But the sad thing is, I had a hard time watching this Series since the Tigers looked so awful with the errors and assbats. Hell, the Cards didn't look much better, but were able to score runs off the Tigers' many mistakes. It was an ugly Series to be sure.
But congrats to the Cards, whose fans were really nice to me when I was at the now old Busch Stadium last year with a Twins hat on. No grief for 1987!!
Anyway, Cards ended a 24 year drought-I think the Twins in 2007 need to end a 16 year drought.

Anna, I wholeheartedly agree. I was only there for a couple days, but I found myself being behind the Cardinals. (This was two years ago...when they faced Boston.)
St. Louis is an amazing baseball town. The fountain is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. And all the support....and I got a Scott Rolen shirt while I was there and I wore it and SO MANY people complimented me on my shirt. Like, just about every person.
They totally deserve this and this is who I'm happiest for. The girl I met at the convention who was just beyond happy her team made it and talked about 1987, saying that was the last time she saw her team make it. The hotel receptionist who apologized for being happy because her team was going to the World Series. Whoever turned the TV in the hotel lobby on the postgame coverage. The guys we encountered when we walked down by the landing. Asking us if we liked the Cardinals and basically just getting drunk out of their minds.
I love the city of St. Louis and I'm so happy for them that they got this. I'm also happy for Scott Rolen, my favorite NL player, but that's not the point.
CONGRATULATIONS, CARDINALS!!!!!
Posted by: Candace at October 29, 2006 07:37 AMThe Cardinals sucked, but the Tigers outsucked them-worst series ever.
Posted by: al at October 29, 2006 09:12 AMI found myself not really giving a DAM about the World Series--could not get excited about either team--maybe they need to play in warmer stadium or dome.
For those looking for offseason news--Brad Radke has been nominated for Hutchinson award--showing courage etc.--one of ten--competing with D Train, Pujols, Junior among others.

Posted by: DAM-DC Twins Fan at October 29, 2006 11:20 AMCandace, what convention were you here for? I was downtown for a convention this weekend too, and it would be crazy if it was the same one...

Made me think of this:
"I want the car. I need the keys." (The Hidden)
Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at October 29, 2006 01:02 PMAnyone see this? Prediction for 2007 will be Mets vs. Twins. Hope to see you all at Shea.
At least we would be playing a team (and facing a fanbase) with class and dignity, unlike the Cardinals.

Posted by: Mets Grrl at October 29, 2006 01:31 PMMets Grrl,
I like the idea of Mets vs. Twins. That would be really cool because I like David Wright and Endy Chavez (I call him Endive). And because the Twins need to go to the World Series next year.
Posted by: TwinsPrincess at October 29, 2006 04:32 PMThe convention was in 2004. It was for National Broadcasting Society. When I actually went to college. It was our regional convention and I spent a weekend in St. Louis. That weekend alone made me fall in love with STL. Plus, we pulled into the parking lot of the hotel literally a half an hour after Game 7 of the NLCS ended.
Posted by: Candace at October 29, 2006 08:32 PMDear BAT bandwagoner,
Wow...a pop culture reference to "The Hidden".
And I thought I was the only one who remembered that.
Way to go!!

My brother and I are a part of that (annoying?) race of movie quoters.
I LOVED "The Hidden." I loved how the aliens took on, not only the human form, but also seemed to inherit human characteristics such as materialism. It was comically profound.
Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at October 30, 2006 08:15 AMI am not a Cardinals fan -- I waffle between apathy and moderate dislike -- and I admit wanted the Tigers to win the whole damn thing. I will settle for being happy for the Cardinals' fans. They're a dedicated bunch of baseball folk.
