Sure, They All Have Families

Batgirl kept getting updates from Goober on Sunday. She could only hear about 1/4th of them given the whole Thunderdome thing, but just hearing the crowd noise was enough. One of the things she did hear was the families came on the field to celebrate with the team after the division was clinched, including a sighting of the adorable Cole Nathan. Here's Silva celebrating after his terrific, division-winning performance with his sister.

Let's hope they have a lot more to celebrate.

It's from the opening credits in the hot air balloon in The Great Muppet Caper. I love that line!

Go Twins!

Posted by: laura at October 3, 2006 09:09 AM

Isn't that a line from a muppet movie?!

Posted by: twins PA at October 3, 2006 09:09 AM

Aw, I got beat!

Eternal Admiration,

Sincerely,

That is indeed from "The Great Muppet Caper", the greatest Muppet film of all time. Maybe the greatest FILM of all time.

"I'd like to try this without the balloon"

"You mean plummeting?"

Posted by: Chris D. at October 3, 2006 09:43 AM

"Yeah!"

"I suppose you could try it once."

Plummeting the best word ever. And the best movie ever.

Posted by: Twin-X at October 3, 2006 10:16 AM

Isn't that the movie where Miss Piggy seduces Ray Liotta? Loved it.

I'm off to the dome, see you there!!

GO TWINS!!

Is Vernon Wells working to get an ESPN contract after his baseball career?

Posted by: STEVE HOLT! at October 3, 2006 11:38 AM

Have a great baseball day all!

I'm resigned to radio broadcasts...you know, old skool...but I'm am recording it to DVD, so...not so old skool.

"Plummeting" is a great word. I shall endeavor to work it into conversation a minimum of 3 times today...hopefully as in: "the A's scoring chances are plummeting..."

And yeah, I'm not so much with the muppets, so I missed that...but I have to say, seeing the top pic and then reading the info, a Ferris Bueller quote flashed: "So THAT'S how it is in their family." With apologies to Silva and his sis, of course. It's my brain...but I can't control it.

Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at October 3, 2006 11:46 AM

Is Silva's sister single? Aye Carumba! Mooey Calliente!

Posted by: justhank at October 3, 2006 11:48 AM

Haha Kruk picked Morneau over the big hurt. I thought Morneau wasn't clutch krukky??

They just said that Rich Harden is pitching game 4. I just hope there is no game 4 (in favor of the Twins) I do not want to see Harden. He's been pretty lights out since coming back from the DL.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TWINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on boys lets get those back!

WIN TWINS!

Cubs out, so Go Twins!

Just thought I'd remind everybody of the Ex-Cub factor: Only two teams since the Cubs were Cursed in 1945 have won the World Series with 3 or more Ex-Cubs on their team -- the 1960 Pirates and the 2001 Diamondbacks -- both by beating the Yankees with a hit in the bottom of the 9th in Game 7.

Ex-Cubs on this year's playoff rosters:

Los Angeles Dodgers: Greg Maddux, Nomar Garciaparra, Kenny Lofton, Ramon Martinez (4)
San Diego Padres: Todd Walker, Mark Bellhorn, Manny Alexander, Scott Williamson (4)
New York Mets: Michael Tucker, Steve Trachsel, Mike DiFelice (3)
New York Yankees: Miguel Cairo, Kyle Farnsworth (2)
Minnesota Twins: Rondell White, Phil Nevin (2)
Detroit Tigers: Neifi Perez (1)
St. Louis Cardinals: Jose Vizcaino (1)
Oakland Athletics: None (0)

This means you needn't really worry about the World Series, should you get there (and I hope you do, the Twins are my Adoptive Playoff Team in the absence of the Cubs), because 3 of the NL teams are over the limit, and the fourth, the St. Louis Cardinals, simply managed to be the least sucky in a really really sucky division (83-78 for a .516 winning % -- quite possibly the fewest wins of any playoff team ever, although I haven't checked this.)

So just deal with the A's and the winner of the Tigers/Yankees, and you'll have yourselves another banner to display in that new stadium you're building.

(Give some credit to the tigers though -- 3 years ago they lost 119 games, did you really think they'd make the playoffs this quickly? Would they be willing to send some coaches over to the Cubs?)

Posted by: PsyMar at October 3, 2006 01:23 PM

the worst play-off team ever i believe was the 1973 Mets - i think they were 1 game over .500, with an avarage of something like .509 - unbelievable. or, as Yogi Berra (their manager said), "you gotta believe."

Posted by: dfb at October 3, 2006 01:30 PM

It is the top of the 7th and I am sick. Please Twins come back!

Posted by: Spamsmom at October 3, 2006 01:39 PM

Apparently the recent strategy on not scoring runs during the first 6 innings of a game is not going to work during the playoffs. Who knew?

Posted by: joe at October 3, 2006 02:20 PM

how about we don't ever pitch to Frank Thomas EVER again.

Posted by: twink at October 3, 2006 02:33 PM

Man, that one hurts. A man on second with no outs, and we can't score him. (Though it's a miracle old "Josh" Bartlett was even out there at all, with all his misadventures on the bases - doesn't Joe Miller have the lineups in front of him? He's been calling Bartlett "Josh" ever since the Twins played the Astros earlier in the season.) Oh, and I still hate Frank N. Furter just as much as I did when he was on the Bitches. Maybe more.

All I can say is, it's time for some "Boof or Dare" - come on, boys. T'ain't over yet.

NOOOOOO. I feel terrible. aaaaaaaaaaaaah

Posted by: Rune at October 3, 2006 02:54 PM

Silly! Of course we had to lose this first game! It wouldn't be any kind of Hollywood script if we swept 'em and just waltzed through the next series straight to the Real Deal.

That would be dull, and not worthy of the Story and Heart that is Our Boys!

That stunk!
Go Boof!

Posted by: Twin-X at October 3, 2006 03:29 PM

Would someone tell me why Santana and not Crain took the lose? Santana gave up 2 runs (?) and we scored 2 (?) runs, yes? So Crain gave up the run that cost us the tie, yes? Thank you I'm so confused.

Posted by: Twin-X at October 3, 2006 03:33 PM

The Twins were losing when Santana came out and the game was never tied, so Santana gets the loss.

Posted by: Soccerfan at October 3, 2006 03:42 PM

Unless it's the bottom of the ninth and the A's and Twins are tied and the bases are loaded, we *must* intentionally walk Darth Thomas in every single at bat from here on out.

And maybe even then.

Posted by: CarrieICL at October 3, 2006 03:43 PM

I know it was expecting too much for them to sweep but out here in the Bay area everyone is saying if they can beat Santana in gm 1 then the A's will take the series.

Over and over and man is it messing in my head. I know Boof can shut them down. It would have been great to win game one though. I didn't think it would be easy but what matters is do they win the series and not did they win this game.

Come on Boof!
I'll be there in Oakland for gm 3, got my tix today.

WIN TWINS!

Posted by: cal at October 3, 2006 03:48 PM

I'm reminded of what happened to me during the 2002 ALDS against Oakland after the A's won game 3 to go up 2-1 in the series. Things were looking pretty bleak after the game, and my family and I walked from the Dome over to Sgt. Preston's to drown our sorrows in beer.

As we got to 7 Corners, though, a loud, drunk, 60-some-year-old man was looking at all the sad Twins fans and yelling at the top of his lungs, "HEY! We'll get 'em... TOMORROW!"

So don't worry, guys. We'll get 'em... tomorrow!

Posted by: Roscoe at October 3, 2006 03:57 PM

Still smarting from a Santana loss, and I don't want to hear anything anyone not named Dick or Bert has to say on TV. Because I can just about imagine.

But I agree, this team is not about doing things the easy way, it's such unfamiliar territory for them that they get freaked out and lose because it's so much more NORMAL for them to claw their way back from behind in a series. It's not good for my blood pressure or my psyche, but it just seems to be the way it is.

So shut them up tomorrow, Boof. Hard.

Posted by: Carmen at October 3, 2006 04:12 PM

I'll agree with semi-intentional walks for Thomas at every at bat. Their lineup doesn't scare me enough to worry about putting him on.

Twins have to win tomorrow but overall I don't think things are that bleak. The Twins huge bullpen advantage may still prove decisive.

Posted by: Mark at October 3, 2006 04:16 PM

Twins and their philosophy of no walks hurt us today. Thomas is their only big threat and we let him beat us. He can't run well so walking him and trying to get a doublke play is a much better scenario then pitching to him.

Posted by: Nora at October 3, 2006 04:20 PM

Dear Twin-x,

The way I understand it: if the team is behind when the starting pitcher comes out of the game, and they never come back to tie it, he gets the loss regardless of the final score.

Seems unfair.

Dear Twins,

Please throw away those bats and get warm ones for tomorrow's game.

Thanks.

k-bro

Posted by: k-bro at October 3, 2006 04:24 PM

They should at least put someone who's actually been a part of the team this year at DH. Hitting the ball would be a bonus. I don't know, I just can't get excited for Philly-dilly.

Get 'em tomorrow, Twins!

Posted by: Dave at October 3, 2006 04:33 PM

I have to agree Dave. Tyner's given them nothing but quality at-bats (including results) since they called him up. And he's rewarded with a BENCH SPOT in the opening game.

Posted by: Torhu at October 3, 2006 04:39 PM

One game down. But definately not out.

Go get 'em Boof!

Posted by: jamar1700 at October 3, 2006 04:49 PM

Tough loss today, but maybe we'll all feel better if we go back to quoting the Muppets—I mean if Boof doesn't sound like the name of a Jim Henson creation I don't know what does:

"Yeah, well my luggage was sucked out the door. Luckily my radio is frozen to my wrist."

Posted by: Chris D. at October 3, 2006 05:12 PM

Tyner was out because it was a left hander out there today. Lefty vs. lefty. Tomorrow Tyner will most likely be in the lineup.

and DON'T PITCH TO FRANK THOMAS. PLEASE NO.

Posted by: STEVE HOLT! at October 3, 2006 05:19 PM

Today it's Oof-da
But tomorrow it's Boof-da

Whatever that means...

Posted by: mort at October 3, 2006 05:34 PM

Go NATE ROBERTSON!!!!!!!! If he gets the win then I'll go to sleep happy.

Posted by: STEVE HOLT! at October 3, 2006 05:41 PM

I was so excited to come home early to watch the recording of the game. Alas, the assbats did not perish in the regular season. And the more I see Frank Thomas, the more I wished the Twins had signed him just so he could stop being a Twins killer, yikes. His great year would have been a total bonus.

Still sucks we lost this game, but tomorrow is another day. But guys, can you please score first for once and help Boof out?

Posted by: Shaun at October 3, 2006 05:50 PM

Roscoe - I was thinking of 2002 also. If I remember we even trailed in game 4 til about the 5th inning. It looked bleak and I was ready to say "At least we made it to the playoffs for the first time in 11 years." But we won the series then and we can still do it now!

Posted by: Soccerfan at October 3, 2006 05:55 PM

According to Gameday, Nevin and Rondell are the ones who hit Zito the hardest, so I'm guessing that's why they gave Ol' Phil a spot.

And I normally HATE the intentional walk, but I have to say STOP GIVING FRANK THOMAS ANYTHING NEAR THE PLATE. And does anyone else think that he should have been out at first when Cuddyer gunned it back in and Thomas barely made it there?

More Muppets, fer shur.

Posted by: Carmen at October 3, 2006 06:24 PM

Didn't we have a 4 game series where every pitcher won but Santana only recently????
This isn't the Cardinals, baby, we've still got BOOF and Radke!

I do admit, I went all Koskie on my couch after we didn't score Bartlett.

I emailed ESPN about the "Josh" mixup, and then Jon Miller corrects himself. It must have been because of me.

Posted by: Donnalove at October 3, 2006 06:26 PM

Carlos Silva is so hot!!!! Go Twins. We'll get the A's tomorrow

Uh, no... it was 82-79, and that would be Tug McGraw, thank you very much. And as I recall, the '87 Twins didn't exactly have the hottest record going... as another great Mets manager, Casey Stengel, actually DID say, "you could look it up!" ;-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at October 3, 2006 07:55 PM

Wait til a team trom the n.L. west goes into the post seasom at 78-84, and gets to the series somehow, and, well, just wait.

Posted by: al at October 3, 2006 10:06 PM

Re: crappy playoff teams, the Cardinals.

Don't forget about the '94 AL West, where the first-place team was something like 11 games UNDER .500 when the strike ended the season. That one would've been the worst playoff team of all time, no question.

And the Cards were really, really crappy against the AL - something like 4-12, which makes their record against the rest of the NL not look quite so bad, if that means anything.

But I'm making excuses. Still, just watch them end up in the Series - they've defied our expectations all year long, why not do it again?

Carlos Silva:

Sunday was the best thing about Carlos for me so far this season.

The second best thing so far is seeing his sister so hot..I mean happy about it.

Doh.

Posted by: Son of Shane Mack at October 4, 2006 12:56 AM

Dave,
I agree, I was surprised to see Punxatawny Phil in the lineup yesterday, but I get the lefty-vs-lefty thing, I guess. Dazzle and John on the radio (as I listened sadly at work while the toddlers in my charge napped and my husband cheered at the Dome) went so far as to suggest that Phil was picked up for the team for the sole purpose of Game 1, since he has such a good record against Vito...which seems a trifle far-fetched to me.

Either way, I'll be glad to see (ok, hear) Tyner in the lineup today.
