B.O.D.

You know what? You all get it. Every damned one of you, Minnesota Twins, from the history-making MLB's best hitter to the once worst DH in history who became clutch again when the team needed it , from the chubby cheeked clean-up hitter to the sweetcheeked outfielder who lost his form and then found it again, from the Cy Young award winner to sinker-ball pitcher who showed up today to deal to the one-armed man, from the twitchiest reliever to the freakiest, from the biggest Canadian to the littlest Punto, you're all the hell the boyfriends of the day.

We may have to add to the list BG. But for now, Congrats to the twins, especially Mauer on his title and Morneau on RBI 130.

Royals ....

Posted by: Rune at October 1, 2006 04:29 PM

I can't believe this season! And now we are getting to watch the boys as we all watch and pray that the Royals can do the impossible. What a team! What an amazing team!

Posted by: Newton at October 1, 2006 04:35 PM

Will we add Gob
ble to the BOD list????

Posted by: PJStP at October 1, 2006 04:38 PM

Batgirl, I know that this is wildly against protocol, but you may have to give the Kansas City Landed Gentry an honorary BOD...

Posted by: Chuckles at October 1, 2006 04:39 PM

Well, this is one B.O.D. decision that nobody can argue with...

Posted by: Spyder44 at October 1, 2006 04:40 PM

...and in the same breath, I have to agree with Chuckles.

Tigers-Royals 8-9 end 12th. Twins are DIVISION CHAMPIONS!

DIVISION CHAMPS.

I said "honorary" Spyder....not the full fledged trophy and cash prize that goes along with a regular BOD. Maybe a gift certificate to Dairy Queen or something.

Contratulations on your Central Division Championship.

Awesome. Freaking awesome. Of course I am already bitter. The AP titled the batting race summary as "Jeter Fails to Win Batting Title", not "Chairman Masters All" (or something reflecting the positive of Mauer).

Posted by: PuckZen at October 1, 2006 04:49 PM

The Twins are the AL Central Champs, as they should be.

And I get to go in tomorrow morning & say a very happy & smiling "good morning" to the jerk I work with who said it couldn't be done.

I love it when I'm right...but I love it even more when he's wrong. ;-D

Posted by: bubblemint at October 1, 2006 04:57 PM

Twins fan in Kansas here. I KNEW the Royals had it in them. wow.

Posted by: JACK at October 1, 2006 04:58 PM

As a Tiger fan, I've stayed away for a while, waiting (and fearing) this moment would come.

A young team had two big leads on the worst team in the AL and choked them both away. Rogers adds another chapter to his infamous playoff history. Inge had a chance to be the face of the team's turnaround from 119 loses. Very painful.

But congrats to the Twins. They played their hearts out and deserve the title.

I'd like to say just getting to the playoffs is enough. But after this collapse, a lot of the good feelings have been sucked out of me.

Posted by: Jack Morris Mutual Admiration Society at October 1, 2006 05:09 PM

Can I get an MVP chant, eh?

Posted by: Eric at October 1, 2006 05:12 PM

Team of Destiny? No freakin' kidding!!! Who would have seen the Royals sweeping Detroit IN Detroit? I've seen some crazy things in baseball, but this season is as wild of a rollercoaster ride as I've ever been on. In April and May this team was PAINFUL to watch, but once the boys put it together in June, WOW!

Let's keep it going in the postseason, boys...we need 11 more wins before the season is over!

Posted by: Paul at October 1, 2006 05:22 PM

I think I hurt myself, but it is all good. This is the first day of the season that they led, but, I think there is some importance attached to this day.

What is the opposite of Murphy's Law? You know, when everything that CAN go right, DOES go right?

Mauer trying to become the first catcher ever to finish as the AL batting champ?
Check.

Morneau with a chance to tie Larry Walker for most RBI in a season by a Canadian-born player?
Check.

The Twins need a good start from Silva to bolster their rotation for the playoffs?
Check.

The Twins need to win and the Tigers need to lose for MN to win the Division on the last day of the season?
Check! Check!

How about "Puckett's Law"?

Posted by: Word Smith at October 1, 2006 05:51 PM

Every game counts. Every second effort. Every fouled off pitch. Every stolen base. Every routine grounder played. Every routine grounder ran out. Every pitch thrown behind in the count. Every timely bullpen move.

No team does it better.

Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at October 1, 2006 06:29 PM

Puckett's law, indeed.

And let's offer a hearty huzzah to BG and all the Batlings, who:
- Never lost faith;
- Gave us Carlos Getting His Groove Back; the great debate over Justin: Dreamy or Sexy; assorts preachings of Chairman Mauer; and Magic Fucking Unicorns;
- Were indominitable in the face of Byotches, Tiggers, Indigenous Peoples; Evil Empires and assorted other unworthy foes, and;
- Offered solace and a badly needed example to this ex-pat Twin Fan in the strange land of Florida.

On to October baseball. ;-)

Dear Bat-Family,
I need your help. My name is Sam and I left Minnesota this year past year and recently started graduate school (studying history) at the University of California, Berkeley. For as much fun as studying history is - I am so excited to see the Twins return to the playoffs that I could burst. So excited, in fact, that I will risk almost certain death to BART it over to Oakland to watch a potential match up between the Minnesota Twins and the Oakland Athletics this Saturday.
Please Bat-Family - pray that I don't get stabbed this weekend wearing my Twins gear on campus in the heart of A's country. Pray that I don't get a beat down in that empty circle of rust that they call a stadium. This little piece of California is Twins Territory.

Oh yeah and suck it Jeter.

Thanks in advance Bat-Family,

-S.J.

Posted by: Kelly at October 1, 2006 06:33 PM

what do you need beyond prayer? Can't help with tickets ... but as a one-time Bay Area denizen, I'll happily kick in for the BART ticket ;-).

As awesome as it is to win the division, it has its drawbacks. Namely that at least the first three games of the playoffs will be at 1pm. Why? Because the Yankees get primetime. It's actually a rule.

So now those of us who have to go to work don't get to watch the games live.

Posted by: TBird41 at October 1, 2006 06:39 PM

"Chubby-cheeked" cleanup hitter?! Hmph. I prefer "rosy-cheeked" or "devilishly dimpled" or "friggin' gorgeous," if you don't mind...

Posted by: LaurieNY at October 1, 2006 06:44 PM

TBird. I try to look at it as a 'glas half full'... what it means is that some of us have an excuse NOT to go to work 3 days this week (or at least leave at noon).

I think I can almost feel all those headaches and stomachaches forming right now.

Posted by: JimCrikket at October 1, 2006 06:50 PM

Jim, I will write you a note. You don't look well at all.

Posted by: LaurieNY at October 1, 2006 06:53 PM

TBird41 -
...and I've just had to remind myself that sleep is optional. 1am (China time) starts. Arggh.
But given the choice; Hell yeah I want the division title.
At least I get the International option of MLB.TV games, although I suppose live, real TV is a bit better than my 5" screen.

WoooHoooo!! Hail to the Chairman!!

WE WON THE CENTRAL LEAGE DIVISION!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! I LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY BOYS SO MUCH IT'S UNBELIEVABLE! This game was awesome. MAD PROPS to the Kansas City Royals. We owe part of our victory to them (the other part we owe to the likes of Jackal, Dennys "Sampler" Reyes, The Nathanest of Joes, Jesse Crain, Sweetcheeks, The Chairman, Doctor Morneau, DJ Cuddles, etc...). Good job, boys. Now let's go kick some Athletic butt.

Posted by: TwinsPrincess at October 1, 2006 07:39 PM

"That was a really, really good story. I especially liked the ending."

Me, too. Such a lovely, lovely story. Tonight when I go to sleep, I'm going to thank God for the Kansas City Royals and the Minnesota Twins.

Posted by: TwinsPrincess at October 1, 2006 07:42 PM

First of all: Cheers to the Central Division Champs!

Second: My husband--I know it is hard to believe (at this moment) but he talked me into going to the game today (Sunday). After Saturday's pretty boring game and thinking that the play level on Sunday was going to be the flavor of Saturday (i.e. saving energy for the playoffs)I was going to watch on t.v. and get stuff done. Well.....what a smart guy! One of the best experiences I've had at the ol' dome. It was great fun cheering: "Let's go Roy-als, clap, clap , clapX3." The team celebrating on the field: priceless! I love the Twins. What a wonderful season to have had a big season ticket package (I thought we had wasted our hard earned money in May). See you lucky ones on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
What a wonderful day in Twins Territory!

Love and Joy to all-

Dearest T-bird -
I'm hoping I see Albert at the Dome - I'm really -really hoping because my seats are along the first baseline and I would love a picture of some nice Albert a$$ - plus if the Twins were - to lose I wouldn't want it any other way - but obviously I would want the Twins to win since Bradke is turning in the spikes after the year.
And it would be a nice ending =)

My boys - thank you for letting us go along for the ride.
We have a few more miles to go before we sleep -

Much love

Wonder Woman:
I wouldn't mind seeing the Cards at the Dome either, since I think the Twins can take them, just like they did in 1987.

Which would be awesome, since I'm a Twins fan through and through. Minnesota born and raised (graduated from the same High School as Batgirl even) but now currently work out in DC.

ODE TO A GREAT NIGHT, GREAT GAME, AND THE BEST TEAM
By Erin Adams (Cuddyer)

A night of magic and night of delight
With the playoffs clinched and the division title in sight
A healed and confident Bradke returned to his home
For the past 12 years, this meant pitching in the dome
With his rosin bag ready and his shoulder still a little sore
He trotted to the mound - the Twins fans in a roar!
His team was behind him and Gardy was too
He did what he does best, he grabbed the baseball and he threw
Right through 5 amazing innings and only one unearned run
Bradke took a seat in the dugout - very proud of what he'd done
With the magic number sitting at six, and the Tigers down by two
Our Twins rallied together - and knew what they had to do
They struggled scoreless through eight innings, unwilling to be beat
This definitely wasn't the time to concede to defeat
Into the bottom of the ninth - two outs on the board
They knew that this was no time to be outscored
Joe Mauer, our local homeboy, headed towards the plate
Feeling the pressure, hoping for magic, and praying for fate
A swing, a connection, and the ball it did fly
We watched in wonder as it floated through the Metrodome sky
Barely missing the centerfield glove and landing in the crowd
"A TIE GAME! We back in it!" - roared the Red and Blue crowd.
Before the 10th inning, the team huddled around their closer, Joe
"Let's win this one for Bradke. Come on guys... let's go!"
Extra innings, no times for the nerves to get shook
And the Twins held off the Royals - and added no runs to their book
To lead off was Morneau, or the Doctor, his cute nickname
Got a single to center - adding to his future MVP fame
Hunter flew out - and leaving the Dr. stranded on base
Rondell White got a hit; Morneau flew to third without leaving a trace
Bringing in LEWWWW to pinch run, and Tyner getting a walk
Bartlett arrived at the plate - hearing the fans chatter and talk
In the back of his head he heard "A sacrifice fly is all that we need"
So he swung - and he hit - fulfilling the deed
They cheered and they celebrated - but with no time to spare
With the B&%$# Sox coming - it was time to prepare
And as Coach Gardy left proud that his team was tied in the division
And also knowing that starting Radke was the right decision.
He thought to himself with a tear in his eye, and a lump in his chest
"I have this best job in town because this team is the best!"
