B.O.D.

You just knew it was going to happen tonight. You knew it from his first at bat, when Sweetcheeks stepped in and within about three seconds had fouled two balls into the left field foul seats. You thought maybe it would be after he made that great catch in the second then stepped up to the plate right afterwards, but no, we had to wait a little longer. It was worth it. When the ball hit the bat you knew it was gone, and Batgirl, for one, wept. After breaking at the All-Star-Break and looking broken down afterwards, Torii hit his 30th home run in the game where the Twins clinched a playoff appearance, in this most improbable of improbable years. Do I hear 100 RBIs? I know I hear a Boyfriend of the Day.

Readers/The Field 26; Goober/Doctor 25; BatBabii/Torii 16; Sooz/(Cuddy) 12; Batgirl/Chairman 8; Jeb/Lewwww 4.

What a way to clinch a playoff birth. Let's win this damn thing now.

Posted by: Chuckles at September 25, 2006 10:00 PM

Twins in the playoffs!! Woo-hoo!

Posted by: pab at September 25, 2006 10:01 PM

Congratulations. Honestly, truly well deserved.

I hate you all.

Goodnite from Chicago.

Posted by: slowlearner at September 25, 2006 10:02 PM

Honestly I want to cry right now. I'm so happy!
and Torii! OMG have you seen a more beautiful smile? Bert was right, Torii's smile reminds you a little bit of Kirby. :-)
I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: gina at September 25, 2006 10:03 PM

I'm listening to The Dazzle Man asking Torii about his feeeelings ... How fun!

Und: Das Boof!

Posted by: QJW at September 25, 2006 10:03 PM

Oh yeah, and we're one game behind the Tigres and the Damn Yankees for best record in baseball.

Posted by: pab at September 25, 2006 10:04 PM

It was really the season (or at least the last 2/3) in speed-vision tonight:

- A win from a rookie pitcher that almost no one expected to contribute.
- HR from each of the 30 HR guys.
- Only 2 KC hits drop in all night (3rd hit was a HR).

Tomorrow... chase for the division/HFA begins.

Posted by: neutrino boi at September 25, 2006 10:05 PM

I love you guys. All. Of. You.

*is so happy I'm shaking* WIN TWINS!!

Posted by: Newton at September 25, 2006 10:05 PM

I love life.

Posted by: Stacy at September 25, 2006 10:05 PM

Dear Mr./Ms Learner,

Go watch your postseason tapes from last year. You'll feel better. We'll see you guys in April--this is some division.

Sincerely,
Batgirl

Posted by: Batgirl at September 25, 2006 10:06 PM

Congrats to a team that truly went out and took everything they wanted with a hunger similar to what this White Sox fan enjoyed from his own team just a short year ago. Enjoy the ride and may the Twins keep up the high level of play. If they are going to go down, let 'em go down fighting.

Posted by: Tim at September 25, 2006 10:07 PM

Despite the loss of important players, this is the best team going into the playoff since '91

Posted by: PJStP at September 25, 2006 10:07 PM

I taste blood in the water...time to go for home field advantage.

Posted by: Mark at September 25, 2006 10:10 PM

This has just been an incredible ride. I'm so happy for our boys. We're going to finish the year with the best record in baseball -- home field all the way, baby!

P.S. Hi, pab!

Posted by: SaraZ at September 25, 2006 10:11 PM

I love these boys! Way to go! What hard work, what a prize, what joy they are playing with! *Happy*

Kirby is smiling. Yup.

Posted by: lever at September 25, 2006 10:12 PM

And Justin hits #34 the night they clinch.

Goosebumps.

Posted by: Word Smith at September 25, 2006 10:13 PM

Break out the goggles, guys! I can't wait to get to work tomorrow to rub this in all of those White Sux fans' faces.

Posted by: Chicago Twins Fan at September 25, 2006 10:14 PM

I just ran up and down the hallways squealing about the Twins going to the postseason. And that makes me a very very very happy girl.

I mentioned this over on the game threads, but how fitting would it be for Justin to end the regular season at 34 homeruns in honor of #34?

Posted by: Lynnie at September 25, 2006 10:16 PM

Glorious!

Morneau's home run could not have been scripted better.

He is the MVP, whether the writers decide to give it to Jeter as his lifetime achievement award or not.

Posted by: BadAndy48 at September 25, 2006 10:19 PM

I'd rather Justin go on a tear in the last few games and end at 40. Torii ending the season at 34 would be more poetic.

Posted by: heraldguy at September 25, 2006 10:19 PM

Twins in and White Sox out in one night. Best moment of my life.

Posted by: C-Pipe at September 25, 2006 10:20 PM

Despite the fact that I've just come down with a nasty cold, I'm trying to figure out my geography homework and I've got about 3 essays to write this week... I'M SO EFFIN' HAPPY! I heard Dick say that Torii was going to hit his 30th and for once he didn't jinx him! Go Sweetcheeks!

I'm disappointed that my internet won't hold out long enough for me to have seen that beautiful 30th homerun or see the good Doctor hit that special number we love (#34). I'll sit through every piece of NFL coverage tonight in order to see those homeruns on ESPN. Unless the Twins website puts them up soon.

Playoffs here we come... Division title you're next. Can anyone guess as to who is pitching Saturday morning's game? Boof again? I'm enduring 10 hours of the Greyhound in order to come home and see the gamea and I really wanted to see Radke pitch... but it sounds like he's pitching Sunday's game??

Posted by: Shelley at September 25, 2006 10:20 PM

BG,

Thank you, I think I will go watch those tapes. The Twins have pitching and, as you well know, that's all that matters in the playoffs. The Twins will fare admirably.

Best of luck.

Posted by: slowlearner at September 25, 2006 10:21 PM

GO TWINS!!!!!!!! Goosebumps for sure on Home Run
#34!!!!!
Believe it

Posted by: Katie at September 25, 2006 10:22 PM

This is why I cling stubbornly to life; now, I just hope I can hang on while they clinch the division, the league's best record, and, of course, the world serious. love all you guys-thanks b.g.

Posted by: al at September 25, 2006 10:24 PM

That high pitched squeal you hear is me.

What? I squeal, so what?

Posted by: Ryan at September 25, 2006 10:24 PM

Dear Mr Hunter,
I am so glad you got your groove back.
How fitting that the established Leader and the new up and coming HR hitter dinged them both tonight. Here's a toast to all my boys.

Posted by: Sandee at September 25, 2006 10:25 PM

What a month by Torii. If you'll indulge my overgrown statistical side for a moment, in honor of the BOD, here is what Torii has done this month:
24 games, .330BA, 9HR, 21 runs, 26RBI, 5SB

Smells like a player of the month to me.

P.S. Hi, SaraZ! We get our house on Friday!

Posted by: pab at September 25, 2006 10:28 PM

it is a beautiful, beautiful night.

i may be sick, and i may have programming homework due tomorrow, and i may have two exams on wednesday, but none of that matters. we are going to the playoffs. and that is all that matters.

now my hope is that the cardinals miraculously defeat the mets to get to the world series, so that i can see our boys win in person :):):)

Posted by: anna at September 25, 2006 10:32 PM

My heart is so full right now.

When can I get my homer hankie shipped to Texas?

No 30-hr guys in many years, and now two this year. That is spectacular.

WIN twins!

EEEEEEEE!

If you haven't hit MARKS link in the first post...please do! You won't be sorry! Sadly I remember when this song was ... acutually... you know...popular.

Yeah laugh it up fuzzballs. It'll happen to you too. *g*

But it's all good! And this one is so special! What a team! What a season! Gawd!

For all my fellow gamethreaders I hope you realize I ...just may...be mentioning the size of someones something or other ... sometime!

And MOTHRA! You.are. so.dead!

Enjoyed sharing this game with the crew in tbe batcave and just had to pop on here to see all the other smiling batlings.

Absolutely could not happen to a better group of guys.

The work's not over yet... but party hearty for one night!

Posted by: JimCrikket at September 25, 2006 10:40 PM

How awesome is to to watch these guys come from 12 back, and now clinch tonight? The team is really an inspiration.

What is Steve Phillips going to say now on Baseball Tonight? He predicted the White Sox in, and the Twins out.....only 5 days ago.

Posted by: jimbaseball at September 25, 2006 10:41 PM

Steve Philips is an idiot. Plain and simple.

Posted by: gina at September 25, 2006 10:43 PM

Oh, my!

Posted by: E-6 at September 25, 2006 10:43 PM

Phillips, like so many others, was simply WRONG.

Now, here's to hoping the moron(s) also dismiss the Twins' chances in the playoffs.

Posted by: JimCrikket at September 25, 2006 10:45 PM

Ooops.....Garza just pulled a Blyleven on the post game show.

Posted by: jimbaseball at September 25, 2006 10:47 PM

Just got home from the Dome. What a sweet moment to see the payers clamber on to the field at the end. How appropriate to have the Nathanest of Joes finish the game. Most of all, how great to see Mr. Casey Blake do his old mates a favor and kick the Bitch sox when they were down. I only hope that the entire Cleveland squad returned Ozzie's "choke" sign from last fall with a vengeance. Their bats certainly did.

Onward and upward, deep into October now, boys.

2006 regular season recap by Alexander Dumas:

"All human wisdom is summed up in two words — wait and hope."

Posted by: twayn at September 25, 2006 10:48 PM

Time to put the '91 Homer Hanky in my back pocket for the next month. It's my superstitious security blanket.

What a beautiful game. What a beautiful night.

Posted by: Dr. Trivicon at September 25, 2006 10:55 PM

I had the pleasure of being at tonight's game. Congrats Twins! Hooray! This comment is not about the playoff berth, though, nor is it about tonight's BOD. Rather, it's about LNP. There was a very strange announcement on the scoreboard tonight during one of LNP's at-bats. It read:

"NICK PUNTO
FUN FACT
He knows your cards before they're dealt."

This was followed up by:
"Only struck out one time in his high school career."

Now, maybe "He knows your cards..." is some metaphor for guessing the pitcher's next pitch. For my part, I prefer to think of it as some type of fortune-telling mojo. Which would go along nicely with the unicorn trick.

Posted by: Peter at September 25, 2006 11:20 PM

Peter,
I believe there must have been technical difficulty at the Dome tonight. "He knows your cards before they're dealt" would be the Fun Fact for Michael Cuddyer, erstwhile magician, and "Only struck out one time in his high school career" would be the Fun Fact for Joe Mauer.

Posted by: twayn at September 25, 2006 11:27 PM

Dearest Twayn -
No Peter is right - that is Nick's fun fact -
Michael's Fun fact is HE'S GREAT at Magic =)

Much Love
Wonder Woman

Posted by: Wonder Woman at September 26, 2006 12:03 AM

Wonder Woman,
I stand corrected, it's been awhile since I've read them. But I think I'm right about Joe.

Go Twins!

Posted by: twayn at September 26, 2006 12:11 AM

Wow I am sik too, some thing must be going around, but if it means the Twins keep playing like that then it's worth it.
P.S.
For #34.

Posted by: Twin-X at September 26, 2006 12:17 AM

Either that, or LNP uses a marked deck.... :O

No, no. He wouldn't cheat. *Would* he?

Posted by: Piranhtachew at September 26, 2006 12:25 AM

Dear Terry Ryan,
Show Torii the Money!!!!

Posted by: Batman of Brooten at September 26, 2006 08:12 AM

No doubt in my mind who it would be today. Torii... seriously, wonderful. BOD all the way.

Posted by: SaraD at September 26, 2006 08:48 AM

Morneau's 34th on the clinching day. Kirby's watchin and smilin.

Posted by: ForMorneau at September 26, 2006 09:59 AM

What a fun year to remember! So many warm fuzzies!

Posted by: Soccerfan at September 26, 2006 10:18 AM

Steve Phillips is an asshole-he's a big f%$#@ing asshole! He was high. He hadn't called it right all night. I was just pointing it out to him that the Sox would have to win 11 of 13 to tie the Twins if they won 7 and he said "Shut up I want showtime!" He threw it out from behind his desk without raising his hands on us or anything. The son of a bitch just wanted showtime. It was unprofessional, very unprofessional. "I'll be calling Petor Gammons about this!"

Posted by: Batman of Brooten at September 26, 2006 12:37 PM

Best part of last night's game for me was watching the uncontrollable joy (okay, maybe it was greed, but I prefer to go with joy) of the woman in her powder blue throwback jersey who caught Torii's homerun ball. Total glee.

Great offering today BG. You didn't miss much. I'm worried. Too early to celebrate that much, sweet as it was. There is work yet to do, but the beauty of doing this for #34 was not lost.

What a loveable bunch of characters, this lot.

Posted by: oh at September 26, 2006 12:55 PM

I am so thrilled! I'm flying up next week to go to the games, whichever one end up beingin Minnesota but would anyone be up for meeting up somewhere (assuming we don't get HFA) next Tuesday and Wednesday and watching those games somewhere?

Posted by: nealcp at September 26, 2006 01:11 PM

oh, We got a kick out of the woman who caught Torii's 30th too. Did she ever give it up? Looked like they were trying to trade her an autographed ball. If anyone knows let me know. Was funny when they kept showing her crying and kissing it. Good for her!
