B.O.D.

Oh, my goodness. There was nothing pretty about this, my friends, but nonetheless we cannot escape two very important facts: 1) we won and 2) we scored runs. This is rather important for the remaining week of the season because, for god's sakes... Now, Batgirl's tired of obsessing over whether we play the Yankees in a 5 game series or a 7 game series, because we are giving them too much power, because there's nothing to fear but fear itself, so let's forget about the Yankees and get this thing done. Batgirl's playing for the division, dammit, and also for momentum—there are times we pitch and hit and field and it's all gorgeous, and times when we play like a bunch of ass-monkeys. And assuming we do make it, she does not want to go into the postseason playing like ass-monkeys.

Well, actually, there were a few pretty things about tonight's game. I mean, Johan Santana was sitting on the bench! And Rondell White went 4-4, which as you may have noticed, is four more hits than he got before the All-Star Break this year. And Shaggy's FIRST MAJOR LEAGUE WIN--whoever thought that would happen? And Joe Nathan getting it done the way he always does. And then there was Torii Hunter's laying out catch off a sure RBI-double for Miggy, saving the game and Sideshow Pat's psyche. And earlier there was Torii's dinger, breaking the tie, showing the Twins they could score on something besides a poorly fielded strikeout, and the other robbing-Miggy-of-a-double-in-the-ninth, making him 3 for 5 on the day with 2 runs, two RBIs, and two potentially game-saving plays, making him the Boyfriend of the Day.

And I agree, we can't let the terrorists win.

I couldn't find this game on TV. Was it on something other than FSN?

Posted by: Torhu at September 23, 2006 07:41 PM

no, Torhu. today's game was not televised in MN, unless you have Extra Innings.

Posted by: kafumbly at September 23, 2006 07:42 PM

Magic number 3

Posted by: gina at September 23, 2006 07:43 PM

Soooo... if the Tigers (who are winnin 15-0 :( ) have a better record than the Yanks, and we get the wild card, do we play Detroit?? Cause that would be kick-ass..

Posted by: Drew at September 23, 2006 08:03 PM

No, the team with the best record can't play the wild-card team in the first round if they are both from the same division. The only way we would not face NY in the first round would be if the A's end up with the best record in the AL or we take the division and NY finishes better than Oakland.

Posted by: Jlubby at September 23, 2006 08:12 PM

The wild card team plays the team with the best record, unless they are from the same division. So the only way we would not face the yankees in the ALDS is if we win the division, or if oakland develops the best record.

Posted by: gina at September 23, 2006 08:13 PM

yeah, I need someone to explain this post season schedule stuff to me too..

Posted by: Lynnie at September 23, 2006 08:14 PM

wow Jlubby, almost word for word... scary

Posted by: gina at September 23, 2006 08:14 PM

I was excited for Guerrier... and Torii... and Rondell. I haven't counted Torii out for reaching 100 RBIs, and I think one would be foolish at this point to think he can't make it. Someone lit a fire under him and he may just be our hottest player heading into the playoffs. I have criticized Hunter with the rest of them, but I am EXTREMELY glad he is a Twin right now. (Please keep in mind that, while I did criticize him, it was not because I didn't like him, it was more of a "how much is this guy worth?" criticism.)

I'm still kind of antsy about the Twins winning the division. I think they could and should win the division. Like Batgirl, I also do not think that how many times we play the Yankees is so important. However, unlike Batgirl, I think we do have more to play for than momentum. I think we still have a shot at home-field for the playoffs. I don't know about you, but I sure would like to be in the Dome when we play the Yanks!

Anyway, it's down to days until we're officially in, and I am basking in the glow. Who woulda thought at the beginning of the season that Boof, LNP, Neshek and Bartlett would be keys to our success?! Congrats, guys!

Posted by: hrbekfan at September 23, 2006 08:15 PM

And here I was thinking Shaggy would get his first ever BOD. But Torii's dinger and fine defensiveness were well deserving so I can't complain. From the radio interview, it sounded like Shaggy was appropriately appreciated by his team mates.

Posted by: Jaguar at September 23, 2006 08:17 PM

These are the ones you just have to gut out, and while it's too bad the Mariners fell asleep during the 23 hour rain delay, both teams are still on pace to have the last series of the season not matter. And won't that be nice to see? Hello White Flags, welcome to the Metrodome. No, nothing you do matters. But do have a seat anyway, won't you? Oh that starting pitcher? I don't know, just some guy we're taking a look at.

Posted by: RK & WV at September 23, 2006 08:29 PM

Darn FOX for the silly rules that didn't let FSN show the game today. But it did allow me to listen to the game, with the Orioles' feed, on XM. Can't tell whether Joe Angel is that good or whether it was just a relief to be able to follow along with the action while listening to the radio.

Posted by: Mr. Baseball No. 1 at September 23, 2006 08:34 PM

MLB.tv blocks out Saturday games before 7pm... so I didn't get to watch it either. Poo. I'll take the win, since both the Bitchsox y los Tigres won. Rough first inning for the Landed Gentry... their poor pitcher didn't even make it through it.

1 more for Sweetcheeks! Let's go for 30.

Posted by: Shelley at September 23, 2006 09:42 PM

there were a lot of great things, there were a lot of terrible things.

but can we talk about rondell going 4 for 4? because i don't know about you, but i think watching a struggling veteran come back and be amazing after so many people had given up on him is pretty much the greatest thing ever.

i love rondell.

Thank you BG, for your fearlessness regarding the Yankees. I am not afraid of them. DO YOU HEAR ME, YANKEES?!! I am not afraid of you and neither is my team.

Well done, Torii. Well done, boys. There were pretty things and ugly things in this game. But we won and that's what I am taking from it.

Mr. Baseball:

Going back to his days in Miami (and even that ever-so-brief period when he did a season for - you guessed it - the Twins), I am of the opinion that Mr. Angel is good.

His jokes are a bit like Torii's 3-1 swings - if they miss, he'll just try it again, but harder. My family thought it charming (this is what you get when your 9-year-old's sense of humor is goofy). I do concede that others preferred to think of him as 'annoying.'

The XM home-team feed does showcase some interesting things, tho. The Bitch Sox radio guys are nowhere near as annoying as their TV crew - in fact, their caustic cynicism during that lovely 2-of-3 series at the Cell was fun to hear, in a schadenfreudesque way (was that really almost a month ago?). The Texas crew is wonderfully descriptive (right down to the red piping on the Twins' road jerseys). And the Boston announcers are quite likely undiagnosed Alzheimer's patients. All are preferable, in my mind, to Gordon.

I'm getting a tad off-topicky here, tho. Go, Shaggy. Go, Torii. 30/100, please, and if you don't mind, could you do it on a a soul-crushing, game-winning three-run jack off Neal Cotts? Just to put an excalamation point on things, of course.

We are only 2 games behind the Yankees despite the fact that our mvp has hit 1 h.r. in the last 31 games, and had 1 single in our 19 hit attack yesterday. So, my question is:what is the tiebreaker for league's best record, which would give that team hfa throughout the post season? Should that have been a period?

Posted by: al at September 24, 2006 09:41 AM

Al, I believe I heard that the tiebreaker is the team that has the best record against the teams in their division (giving NY the advantage in that case).

Posted by: Word Smith at September 24, 2006 10:43 AM

First tie-breaker is head to head for HFA. Second tie-breaker is record within division. Twins and Yanks finished 3-3 against each other but Yankees did better in ALeast than Twins did in AL Central. Yankees beat Detroit head to head.

What I dont understand is why WB50 in Washington who had rights to the game didnt pick it up till an hour in--so I missed big play on Cuddyer strike out. (Washington is in Baltimore region for MLB Extra Innings so I cant get feed that way).

Thanks,so tying the Yankees won't do, nor will tying the Tigers as they won the season series from us; how bout if we tie the A's {an unlikely proposition}? I think we would win that one.

Posted by: al at September 24, 2006 11:14 AM

al,

The Yankees and Tigers would hafta collapse significantly for a Twins-A's tiebreaker to come into play, but the Twins would get home field advantage in that one.

And while Morneau isn't smacking home runs, he's 22-for-61 (.361) in his last 15 games. Last year he got into trouble when he tried yanking homers when teams were feeding him crap. This year he's been good at going to the opposite field. And his power void has certainly been mitigated by the fact that a guy named Hunter, who bats right behind him, has 6 homers during those games and Rondell has chosen the stretch to start banging the ball.

Best, RD

p.s. Go Bears!

Posted by: RonDavis at September 24, 2006 11:34 AM

Way to go, boys! I was very pleased to hear the outcome of yesterday's game (I didn't get a chance to listen to it on the radio, and it wasn't on TV). I really hope Torii hits 30 homers this season. Congratulations to Mr. Matty G for his first career win. Also a big handshake for Rondell. I didn't know it was possible for him to get four hits in one game.

Posted by: TwinsPrincess at September 24, 2006 11:38 AM

Those 2 losses, especially El Presidente's where, I fear, crippling. Detroit is too good for us to blow opportunities like that. I don't see us overcoming the ligers and the evil empire now, we're running out of time.

Posted by: billhedrick at September 24, 2006 11:53 AM

I was getting impatient with the bartender when he could not find the game on the big screen TV. He was trying to shut this middle aged woman up so he could go back to talking to the sweet young thing at the end of the bar. Pulling my trusty schedule out of my purse and realizing my mistake resulted in a big tip for the poor guy. Husband rolls eyes at me. No tantrums today.

Posted by: Linda at September 24, 2006 11:53 AM

Ron, he was hitting well when he was hitting homers also; 5 hole hitters who hit homers are de riguer, or something like that, for winning teams. I think it is the same 5 for 5 curse that affected Mauer and Bartlett.
