Phew.
It's not that you expected we were going to lose this one—it's Johan Santana at the Dome, after all. But, you know. There was the fear. And maybe even some cold sweats. And when the Bitch Sox struck first in the third, Batgirl wanted runs and she wanted them NOW. Like four. Four runs would be good. And if you could add another one later, that would be really awesome, because Boo hasn't really pitched in a few days and it's possible he could let in a run or two—I mean not likely, of course, but possible. And so for batting in runs 3 and 5 and reminding everyone why you bat clean-up, you, Michael B. Cuddyer, are the Boyfriend of the Day.

cuddles!
Posted by: billhedrick at August 20, 2006 04:02 PMMr. Johan Santana (15-5, 3.03 ERA, 192 K's), WHY ISN'T HE THE BOD?
Posted by: Rune from Norway at August 20, 2006 04:17 PMUm...I just have one question: What the heck is a pihranta? Blyleven could never say it right, even though Bremer went out of his way several times to sneak in the correct pronunciation of pihrana politely without calling Bert out. Also, when you're betting in football, you tend to root for the team you bet would win, not who scores the most points (unless it's said team). Sigh...
Posted by: Pat at August 20, 2006 04:20 PMSantana was good today, but not dominating. I wouldn't argue if he had been BOD, but cuddles earned it.
Posted by: billhedrick at August 20, 2006 04:23 PMNow, if someone could slip in the correct *spelling* of pirahna... :)
And did anyone listen to the game on WCCO? That was ME in the second inning in line for the Kwik Trip double-play thingy. "Chris Hawks from Golden Valley, MN". That was a surprise, hearing my name said on the radio while driving home from church. :) To bad they couldn't turn a double-play; I was even rooting for Joe Crede to get on base!
Posted by: Salt-Man Z at August 20, 2006 04:28 PMI wish Cuddyer could always hit with RISP. Cuddy be clutch.
Also, Rune forget to mention:
15-5 leads MLB in wins, tied with Halladay.
3.03 ERA leads the AL.
192 K is the best in MLB.
Cy Young II.
Posted by: twayn at August 20, 2006 04:31 PMHalliday got #16 today, but El Presidente is still Cy-tastic!
Posted by: billhedrick at August 20, 2006 04:36 PMDear Mr/Ms Rune,
Indeed, Santana's year numbers are most impressive, but of course Team Batgirl Boyfriends get precedence (please read the BOD by-laws if you have questions) and Santana's performance, while wonderful, was also not as dominant as he is when he wins BOD. He does, however, deserve the Cy Young.
Sincerely,
Batgirl
Fun game, and congratulations to Cuddy.
Posted by: Twin-X at August 20, 2006 04:46 PMThat's my man!!
Posted by: LaurieNY at August 20, 2006 04:46 PMOr, perhaps even the correct spelling of _piranha_...
But no matter how you spell it, pirahnta, pirahna, piranha, or pinata, they're still gonna eat ya.
Posted by: walt-o-meal at August 20, 2006 04:57 PMyabadabadoo! my boyfriend forever is BOD again! this is great. i am so amazingly proud of him. he was soooo close to that homerun today!!
Posted by: naomilovescuddy at August 20, 2006 05:19 PMI must confess, I almost claimed Cuddles as my boyfriend for '07 because Torii was being... well, Torii, and striking out and flying out and that ball bounced past him in the 8th ... and you know, who knows if Sweetcheeks will be with us next season...
but when my boy came up in the 8th I realized that I was being a bad girlfriend and quickly forgave him for his shortcomings and said outloud that I still loved him because he's Sweetcheeks and has always been my favorite and, of course, I would be very disappointed if he wasn't in a Twins uniform after '06 and he replied with *BOOM!*
Do you think I can request Torii to come to my 21st birthday party? That commerical makes me jealous every time I see it. :)
Posted by: Shelley at August 20, 2006 05:43 PMPicked up the top of the eighth from 35,000 feet (gotta love airlines that have XM) and I almost committed several violations of aircraft security. Thanks, Torii ... Your boom-boom stick may have saved me from an ugly conversation with an air marshal :-).
Posted by: tgd at August 20, 2006 05:54 PMAll this meaningful baseball is making me a wreck. Yesterday when they muffed the run-down of AJ (why is it always AJ?) I yelled and kicked the ottoman, scaring the cat. Today was a bit more peaceful, but every came matters and I'm going to be all jangled nerves and teeth on edge until the end of September.
Posted by: Kurtis at August 20, 2006 06:16 PMYeah go Piranhas!!! I prefer that nickname to the twinkies. You guys were great today.
Just a quick clarification... I thought Michael's middle initial was B. for Brent, not J?
Dear Ms. Melissa,
Yes, if you want to be accurate.
Mistakenly,
Batgirl
Happiness is...
Stealing someone's Wi-fi access, loading BG.com, and seeing a BOD entry on the top of the page. Would have liked the sweep... but there's always next weekend.
Posted by: neutrino boi at August 20, 2006 06:51 PMHa-ha! Somehow I *knew* that if I took someone to task for spelling piranha wrong, *I'd* muff it, myself. :D
Posted by: Salt-Man Z at August 20, 2006 06:54 PManyone know where i can catch the twins' TWIB? thankya.
Posted by: Ovie at August 20, 2006 07:06 PMWhen Lew came to the plate in the eighth with the bases empty it was hard for the two of us to devise a way to earn the BOD in one swing. We'll calculate a plan and will be ready next time.
Posted by: Jeb at August 20, 2006 07:18 PMOK, "Walt-O-Meal" wins for best nickname. I'm still laughing.
And as much of a moron as Ozzie can be, you have to love his respect for the Twins. And his quote about A.J. - "His own mother boos him."
But, mostly, you have to love our Piranhtas. Time to eat some Orioles.
Posted by: adidasman at August 21, 2006 09:14 AMCuddyer must be hearing those "not a true clean-up hitter..." comments. He is really stepping it up recently. And does anyone remember the Torii debates from earlier in the season? I want him to stay because he wants to beat the White Sox more than any other team. So do I. Nice work, Torii.
I believe from what I heard on the radio, that the ranking of the hitter with most rbi in a two out situation with men in scoring position goes like this:
1. Cuddyer
2. Morneau
3. Ortiz
Amazing huh? Let Cuddy score the pirahna's on doubles, and if for some reason he misses.. leave it up to the Dr. and Torii!
Posted by: kbrew at August 21, 2006 07:00 PMActually it is 1. Morneau 2. Cuddy 3. ortiz
Either way it is nice to see the Twins have the top 2 players in the category, a big reason for our success with 2 players in the middle of the lineup providing such production.
Posted by: Nora at August 22, 2006 07:33 AMMichael Cuddyer getting boyfriend of the day on my birthday? I love it. It's beautiful.
