B.O.D.

Everyone knows that the BODSHC is a sentimentalist. Give her a player down on his luck who comes through in the clutch and she's likely to give him the most coveted fake award in all of Twins bloggerdom. Like Sunday, when Mr. Down-On-His-Luck himself steps up and hits his first home run of the season and you could feel the joy reverberate through Twins Territory. And then yesterday he goes 2-3 with a walk and today he manages two home runs, going 3-4 with 2 RBIs and earning a standing O from the crowd—not to mention Batgirl and the Batkitties Three. And it's just so damned beautiful to watch, because we've been waiting for this, and we gave up, and we gave up a few more times, too, and then there was hope, and then more giving up, and then, well—BAM! BAM! BAM! Keep it up, Comeback Kid, and maybe you'll get more Boyfriends of the Day.

Goober/Doctor: 17; Readers/The Field: 16; Batbaby/(Kubes) 8; Batgirl/Chairman 6; Jeb/ (Silva) 3; Sooz/(Cuddy) 3.

All that stuff everybody says about Rondell being such a stand-up guy in general makes this even sweeter. Way to show up when the team needs you, is what i say.

May the record reflect I always knew he could do it. Okay, okay, I mostly knew he could do it, but had several dark nights-- well, dark weeks-- okay, dark months-- of the soul, there.

Posted by: Katharriet at July 19, 2006 09:41 PM

Awww. Now I'm gettin' all schmoopie. Again. Gotta love this team.

Posted by: jamar1700 at July 19, 2006 09:49 PM

And to think, even though he's really only been hitting well in the past few days, he's already got more offensive plays that actually helped the team than A-rod on the season.

Posted by: TwinsinBoston at July 19, 2006 09:50 PM

It hade to happen some day! Nice work RW. And a congratulations to Castillo and Punto for their streaks too. I heard them say that Castillo's longest hitting streak was 35!!!

Posted by: Twin-X at July 19, 2006 09:51 PM

May the record reflect that I gave up on Rondell before taxes were due, and have been demanding his execution ever since. I'm not sorry to eat my words, though. Good work Mr White.

Posted by: Kurtis at July 19, 2006 10:03 PM

I didn't think Rondell would be able to do it... but I always hoped he would, because he was obviously never cavalier about his struggles. He always tried so *hard*.

Nice to see that trying pay off, now. Go Twins go!

Posted by: CarrieICL at July 19, 2006 10:06 PM

Hooray for cortisone shots!

Posted by: Word Smith at July 19, 2006 10:06 PM

Twin-X, Indeed, Castillo has one of the longest hitting streaks in MLB history. It's a 3-way tie for 11th place shared with Ty Cobb and some old-timey guy named Fred Clarke.

Posted by: Kurtis at July 19, 2006 10:07 PM

The Twins have been so fortunate this year in that the injuries have often been addition by subtraction. Sierra going down and being replaced by, well, anyone, really. Stewart going down the first time and bringing Kubel up. Stewart going down the second time, along with Ford, and Kubel being a little nicked up... in steps Rondell 2.0.

If White can keep playing at a level close to this and Hunter comes back in the early part of August (and plays fairly well)... that's a lineup that can do something.

Posted by: neutrino boi at July 19, 2006 10:12 PM

Just think how close we came to releasing Rondell... and having the "pleasure" of sitting back and watching him come back and start hitting for someone else.

4 games does not a season make, but hey its a start... and a timely one.

Posted by: JimCrikket at July 19, 2006 10:14 PM

That performance was great to see (well, in my case, hear). June average=.059 versus July average =.571. More total bases in 4 games than all of April (19 v. 13).

Posted by: Mike in IN at July 19, 2006 10:15 PM

Neut, not to be disagreeable, but I'd say this is a lineup that's *already* doing something.

Not that it couldn't always do *more*, but everyone (media, blogs, even us) keep saying that the Twins are a "light-hitting" ballclub. Overall, perhaps, but looking at the last six or seven weeks... again, I'd say our lineup's doing a pretty damn good job of getting things going.

Posted by: CarrieICL at July 19, 2006 10:21 PM

Man, not only was I there for Rondell's first first dinger, but I was there for the second and third ones, too! How exciting to see him come through like that in person. I was kinda sickened by the people who were suddenly cheering for him - my mother and I have quite often been the only ones clapping for him in the area around us, and now everybody's on the White train. Oh, well, I'm happy to see him getting support now, even though it's coming in when he needs it less. Why can't people ever cheer on a person when they're down?

Anyhoo, yay, Rondell@ Congrats on your second BOD! That was an awesome game. Also, YAY for LNP's triple - that was purdy.

(Also, anybody else think that Tyner's hair almost gives Radke's a run for it's money? His has such height, such bounce, such body!)

Posted by: FordHoiberg at July 19, 2006 10:53 PM

MTRR that I do not know why I typed the word "first" twice.

Posted by: FordHoiberg at July 19, 2006 10:54 PM

I got home, heard the news...and immediately checked outside for Brimstone.

This is incredible. I'm really starting to feel REALLY bad for all the crap I flung his way. Maybe it was just a nagging injury. But holy heck...here's to the guy for coming back and starting to hit the ball!

*salutes*...*eats crow*

Posted by: Torhu at July 19, 2006 10:59 PM

Who is this guy and what has he done with Rondell White?

I don't know if this showed up on TV or not, but I was at the game tonight and the crowd gave him a very nice ovation when he came up for the fourth time. He tipped his cap. It was a cool moment, everyone saluting a good game after a season of struggle.

Nice to see a good person have a little redemption, especially when it helps carry a team that's thin in the ranks.

Posted by: BadAndy48 at July 19, 2006 11:12 PM

By "do something", I meant make a run at the Tigers and Sox, of course. You know the Twins are playing well when even a "no expectations, no disappointments" pessimist like me starts thinking, "You know... they could make a run at this thing."

And, FH... I think you're White's good luck charm. You've been there for all of his HR. Sorta like how Tyner has lived up to the the nickname I gave him three times: Jason "Break the" Tyner. Anyone want to volunteer to be Hunter's little helper when he comes back?

Posted by: neutrino boi at July 19, 2006 11:15 PM

Aye, Andy, it was a nice moment and yes it came through on the broadcast.

Gotta feel like those 5 games that the Twins are trailing the BitchSox by right now might have evaporated if we'd had a healthy Rondell from the beginning.

Posted by: JimCrikket at July 19, 2006 11:16 PM

Happy dance!

So glad that rehab assignment in Rochester did our boy RonDL some good.

Posted by: talldrinkowater at July 19, 2006 11:17 PM

Twins AL ranking in Runs, by month

April, 13th
May, 4th
June, 7th
July, 6th (tied with Boston after tonight's game)

Draw your own conclusions.

Posted by: frightwig at July 19, 2006 11:23 PM

JimCrikket - Thanks for the update. It figures that Bremer and Blyleven would highlight a moment like that.

Frightwig - Yep. Between the way they've been scoring runs over the past two months and the Johan/Cisco Kid combination, every GM with a team in contention is praying the Twins don't make the playoffs.

Posted by: BadAndy48 at July 19, 2006 11:30 PM

Doin the RW happy dance.
On a diff note - any way we talk Bradke into coming back next year??????
(If we go all the way Ill gladly salute him on his way to happy retirement land)
BTW the guy really aint that old.

Posted by: TAR at July 19, 2006 11:30 PM

I like it when the BOD includes my initials. It means home runs were hit! Mr. White, congratulations. I've been cheering for every hit since your first...it's good to see that now days, they're more than a rare single. Keep it up!

Posted by: Just Beth at July 20, 2006 01:34 AM

Mayhap Rondell's been taking hits off Bradke's cortizone...

Posted by: TwinsGoddess at July 20, 2006 07:17 AM

I believe they mentioned in the broadcast tonight that Rondell was, in fact, taking cortisone shots.

I gotsta get me summa that.

Posted by: Chuckles at July 20, 2006 08:49 AM

Yay for the other white meat!! I am truly sorry for all the obseneties and death threats I yelled at him when he stuck out the whole first half of the season. Accept my apologies Mr. White.

As mentioned above, I am happy to eat my words, and hey, if that shoulder really was the problem to his suckiness I'm lookin forward to many more dingers from him.

Posted by: L.H. girl at July 20, 2006 09:49 AM

As Dick (or Bert) said during Bradke's first start post-cortison shot: "Cortisone shots for everybody!"

I've cheered and pulled for Rondell all along and I got tears in my eyes when he got the big ovation. I hope he can keep this up (okay, maybe not three HRs in three starts, but . . . something good).

Posted by: Laurel Krahn at July 20, 2006 10:24 AM

It's a bit early to be absolutely sure, since they can be very tricky things to judge, but I think the curse that has plagued Rondell White all year has been broken. And all it took was a cortisone shot, a trip to Rochester, and sacrificing a live chicken to the departed spirit of Madame Laveau. Now, RonDL, go do that voodoo that you do so well. And don't stop until after October.

Posted by: twayn at July 20, 2006 10:33 AM

I'm no fan of John Gordon, but the astonishment and delight in his voice when RW hit his 2nd homer of the game -- really fun to hear. "Oh, my" indeed!

Posted by: Jim H. at July 20, 2006 12:49 PM

The first one? Sweet. The second one? Completely awesome. I am so happy I was able to be there for that.

Funny thing was when he came up for his third at bat, his 2006 highlight was:

"Two home runs
v. Tampa Bay
July 19"

I just found it so comical that his 2006 highlight happened in the same game it was being shown. Man, those jumbotron people were fast last night!

Posted by: Candace at July 20, 2006 09:59 PM

How could you not like Gordon?
