Did anyone in Minnesota think for a second we were going to lose this? It was so cute, all the hype for Clemens when every Twins fan knew he was going to get shown how it was really done. And BG was planning to give this to the Kid, facing the minimum through--what was it--seven? I don't know, it was something. It was like he'd let people on base just to toy with them, like a BatKitty and a toy mouse, except a toy mouse can't hit into a double play.
But Enron Field bilked the Kid out of his shut out like so many California energy customers. It's a stupid, stupid park and there should probably be prosecutions. There aren't any reasonable dimensions, except maybe right center where Sid Hartman's Man Crush (Come here, kid, sit on Uncle Sid's lap.) hit a ball with about half of his strength around 385 feet, for what would become the winning run and giving the Doctor his fourth consecutive Boyfriend of the Day.
Goober/Doctor: 12; Readers/The Field: 9; Batbaby/Torii: 6; Batgirl/Chairman 4; Jeb/ Lewwww3; Sooz/Stewie 2
Posted by Batgirl at June 22, 2006 09:59 PMcongratulations, Doctor! it was a successful Clemens-ectomy!
hahahahahahaha
ROGER CLEMENS IS THE LOSER!!!!!!
Posted by: kafumbly at June 22, 2006 10:19 PMAww, I was hoping it would be 'the kid.' Okay well, then Liriano gets honorable mention. But I can't fault the good doctor, the winning run is the winning run.
And I'm with you kafumbly, Roger Clemens losing just puts a huge grin on my face! :-)
Posted by: SaraJ at June 22, 2006 10:26 PMThe only good thing about the hype surrounding this game is the fact that I got to watch it on TV and see Liriano make Clemens look average.
Posted by: Mark at June 22, 2006 10:32 PMLet's see, the good Dr. ended up with a double, a HR, and a single. I'm relieved he didn't ask Joe to blow another save for him just so he could get a shot at a triple later on.
Posted by: Laurel Krahn at June 22, 2006 10:39 PMWhat a good doctor he is!! :)
Posted by: Stacy at June 22, 2006 10:43 PMFrancisco was outstanding.
Morneau brought his big stick to the ball park again.
The rookies (Bartlett/Kubel) stayed hot.
The only disappointment was Mauer not taking advantage of the big stage to garner more All Star votes.
Awww..ESPN is still bsbying Clemens. Even though he blew a game against the team he hand picked to play...
Posted by: Twinsboy at June 22, 2006 10:52 PMLiriano's so good, I forget he's not Johan Santana. How lucky are we to have a fireballer lefty as refined as he is at just 22? Wow. Pray he shies away from injuries and a dead arm and we'll need shades for as bright of a future he is looking to have.
Once again, thank you (Giants GM) Brian Sabean!
Posted by: Mike at June 22, 2006 10:53 PMRocket flames out but the odd stat of the day is that Houston had its largest crowd on record. Bigger than a World Series game?! Strange.
Posted by: fanduo at June 22, 2006 10:54 PMI feel like smoking my first-ever cigarette. It was THAT good for me.
Posted by: LaurieNY at June 22, 2006 11:04 PMSuper game! One thing that bugged me however was espn's take on how the game turned out.
Liriano was fantastic, but from looking at the highlights one wouldn't have been able to tell who won... well, practically!
It was like clemens , clemens, clemens, and oh! by the way, the other team showed up and won or something....
But now lets talk about Clemens....
G - R - R .... spells grrr!!
My consolation is that we all know how good he is, and the rest of the country will just have to catch up by osmosis I guess..
I got to see Cisco pitch; thank you Roger Clemens! Best part of the ESPNcast, JM: "Kid is a good name for a baseball player." If only he had realized the Kid was on the mound.
Oh and the Bat-manifesto has been embraced of late: 13 of 14 with 4 runs or more.
Posted by: Bob at June 22, 2006 11:11 PMVery sweet win for the Twins. All the ESPN hype made me glad that I don't have cable. Yeah, it sucks not having FSN, and it sucks not being able to watch most of the World Cup matches on ESPN, but that's partially offset by not having to flip through the third showing of the Red Sox-Yankees highlights on SportsCenter.
Posted by: Nick at June 22, 2006 11:11 PMNice that baseball finally has a Liriano who doesn't suck! Remember Nelson Liriano, the gawd-awful second baseman who played for the Twins in '90, just before Knoblauch's rookie year? That Liriano made Luis Rivas look like Ryne Sandberg.
Posted by: Mr. Baseball No. 1 at June 22, 2006 11:26 PMNot surprising that the post-game ink is still going to Clemens, despite the kid's performance. But the results are what matters and anyone who saw that game knows who the best pitcher was in that game :)
Posted by: JimCrikket at June 22, 2006 11:31 PMI'm located in a zone where ESPN had the game, and not FSN. By then end Joe Morgan was absolutely gushing about how brilliant Liriano was. He even made the 2 run HR sound like a positive, talking about how Liriano has been so good he hasn't had to work through tough spots, and seeing him work through pressure like that was even more impressive. At one point he said something like "oh yeah, and Clemens pitched pretty well too," but mostly he just raved about Franchise-K-o.
Posted by: mbnovak at June 22, 2006 11:58 PMSad that I had to sleep through Santaninho's performance. And Justin's. As much as we all knew Liriano was going to come out and be the real story, I also had a felling 33 was going to be greater than 22.
Posted by: timprov at June 23, 2006 03:42 AMThe dimensions are odd, but it's a hell of a great place to watch a ballgame.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at June 23, 2006 04:45 AMJust a thought, but how many of the guys in our lineup last night had ever faced Clemmens?
Because I was just kinda thinking...isn't it quite possible that the Twins that had never hit against him did quite well because they had nothing to fear.
Whereas somebody who has a history with Clemmens (Hunter) didn't do as well because they were kinda psyched up/psyched out.
Posted by: Torhu at June 23, 2006 12:24 PMDear Mr. Hu,
BG thought the same thing. They managed not to be psyched out by reputation, but Torii seemed clearly to have psyched himself out.
Thoughtfully,
BG
Shouldn't the good Doctor have 12 BOD's instead of 11?
Posted by: anon at June 23, 2006 01:28 PMOops. Yes. Thank you.
Posted by: Batgirl at June 23, 2006 02:05 PMTorhu:
Joe Morgan actually made the claim that Clemens was familiar with all the hitters he would face before the game so, since Joe Morgan usually just makes stuff up, I checked:
(Prior to last night's game.) Fact: Never faced Kubel, Morneau, Mauer, Punto, Bartlett, Tiffee, Rodriguez, Redmond, Ford. That's 9/14 of the Twins offense and 5/8 of the starting starting position players.
Posted by: neutrino boi at June 23, 2006 03:54 PM"It's a stupid, stupid park and there should probably be prosecutions."

It's probably just me, but the irony tickles me to hear all of Twins Territory this week sound like Frank Thomas after a series in the Cheat Dome. For what it's worth, I think the Lane HR would have been a legit RBI double if not a homer in any other yard. It was a good line-shot over the fielder's head. Oh, well. An excellent outing by Liriano, just the same.
Posted by: frightwig at June 23, 2006 06:20 PMSoon to be 13 BOD's if he keeps this up...
