Twins at Anaheim of Los Angeles. LAAAAA 4, Twins 3 (11 innings).
Oh, gosh, you guys, Batgirl's getting too old for this. Sure, when she started this blog at 23 she could handle these extra inning west coast games, but now as her 26th birthday draws nigh she's really feeling it. And apparently so are the Twins. Really, the whole thing's utterly unfair—the Angels get to play in prime time while our boys have to be up well past their bedtimes; Joe Mauer has only recently started staying up past 9, and Lew Ford is generally supposed to be lights out by 10 CDT, though sometimes he slips Corri a mickey so he can go play Warcraft. The point is, you can't blame Rondell for getting picked off second by three miles in the 10th or the Doctor for letting balls sail by his head willy nilly, no more than you can blame BG for drooling on her keyboard after 11.
Not that the jet lag hit everyone—at first Bradke seemed something like Mount Vesuvius; you knew it was going to blow, it was just a question of when. And then the sun set in the West and Bradke was like, "oh, hey, did the season start? Why didn't anyone tell me?" and suddenly there were all these gorgeous Radke-of-Olde things like ground outs and strikeouts and maybe even one-two-three innings, I don't know, I'm too tired to count. As for Jesse Crain, BG felt about as good with him entering the game in the ninth as JFK felt about those missiles going to Cuba, but thanks to some diplomacy and a nice slider, the whole thing was pretty non-apocalyptic. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to have the same control on his pickoff move to first in the 11th, the Doctor let out a big yawn at the wrong time, and the ball traveled past the Doctor, up the first baseline, outside of the stadium, over the state line, and to Las Vegas where it spent some time at the Bellagio, hired some prostitutes, got caught up in a whole crooked defense contract deal, and married some chick it met at the bar. Oopsie.
The point being, BG's taking some comfort in Bradke's performance in the middle innings of the game, and even some comfort in the fact that when he loaded up the bases he managed to keep things under control (How Boof-esque!), and that now she gets to go to bed.
Light blogging this week on account of how incredibly sleepy BG is.
Where else but at batgirl.com could you find Angels, Warcraft, JFK and prostitutes in the same story? Talk about willy nilly!
But yes, it was nice to see a Boof-esque performance from Brad. I hope the late inning collapse didn't scar him. Sleep well BG...and you, too, Scott Baker.
Posted by: SDave at May 30, 2006 02:00 AMI must have been even sleepier than BG. Stupid west coast games. I woke up this morning assuming we had won....silly assumption. After reading this...I am glad I was asleep and did not have to suffer through the ugliness!
Yesterday was disheartening. After the weekend sweep I hoped we could get on a role. But we did the little things wrong yesterday at it hurt us. Bad base running, some oppsies on defense, and untimely hitting. Did Seattle leave its ass-hats in our locker room???
Posted by: soccerfan at May 30, 2006 09:15 AMAll you mean, nasty people who were ready to see Brad Radke fall off the face of the Earth...my boy's not done yet. I was really heartened to see that, for one night at least, he was more concerned about throwing the right pitch than he was about walking people. Nice job, Brad. Now if we could just stop throwing the bloody ball around the infield like a T-ball team...
Posted by: adidasman at May 30, 2006 10:17 AMI'm thinking it's the curse of the initials J.C. rearing its ugly head: J.C. Romero last year, Jesse Crain this year. Jason Kubel in both. Well, wait a minute there.
Posted by: The Commish at May 30, 2006 10:18 AMJust wanted to point out Whites line last night:
R White DH 4 0 2 1 0 0 1 .200
He finally has a '2' to start his batting average!!!!!
Perfect hair, & a very decent Radke-of-olde-esque performance...
Just as I predicted in my note to RD on the Lewwww as BOD comments.
Thanks Bradke, for showing up & giving us "a new hope". I wish you an even better performance in your next outing, and a win to go along with it.
Posted by: bubblemint at May 30, 2006 10:38 AMWeird game. Some encouraging things (Bradke, the Jackal, even Jesse Crain pitched well though I mostly had my eyes closed for that) and then there were the mistakes. Ugh. Was that payback for all the times other teams have made baserunning mistakes when playing us? Sigh.
Wish we'd won this one.
Posted by: Laurel Krahn at May 30, 2006 10:39 AMWait a minute, Commish... just who's head are you calling ugly?

Posted by: JimCrikket at May 30, 2006 11:01 AMDon't mean to be a negative nilly, but Bradke has had good starts earlier in the season as well. I am going to hold off on proclaiming that he is back until I see it two games in a row, something that to this point he has been incapable of doing. I'm hoping that this time it happens, but I'm not holding my breath either.
But I would have to agree with you adidas, it was nice to see him pitching without worrying about walking a guy here or there. I think hitters are getting too comfortable up there against Bradke, because they know where the ball is going to be almost every pitch. It's good to see him buzzing the tower every once in a while.
Posted by: Speedy at May 30, 2006 11:51 AMAfter watching Rondell get picked off (again)...I think he's busted whatever final straw I had been giving him.
Being a DH that's barely hitting .200 and doesn't have a single homer doesn't help either.
Posted by: Torhu at May 30, 2006 12:01 PMI'm with Torhu but who do we put in to DH?
Kubel? I doubt he could hit a pinata at a 10 yr olds birthday party much less a mid 90's fastball. Or a low 80's breaking pitch or...well you get the idea.
Might as well have LNP DH (I'm kidding)
Posted by: cal at May 30, 2006 12:42 PMYeah, have Kubel DH. Sure, he's been struggling, but he's only had 24 at bats. Have him be the everyday DH, bat him 6th or 7th, and tell him he's got a couple months to settle in. Heck, platoon Cuddyer and Kubel. One plays right, one DH's. Switch 'em up every so often.
When Stewie comes back, put him back out in left and let Ford pinch hit and give Stewie and Torii a rest every so often.
White has had 160 at bats and has shown almost literally nothing. It's not like he's in our future plans either. Get rid of him. Give some of the young guys a secure chance to develop and prove themselves in the pros.
Then once we get rid of White, we can turn our attention to third base and getting rid of Rockflop.
Posted by: Will at May 30, 2006 01:41 PMRondell White is obviously cursed. There's no logical reason for the year he's having, so it must be a curse. A jinx. A bane. A scourge. A plague. I could go on, by my thesaurus is an abridged version.
Posted by: twayn at May 30, 2006 01:54 PMMaybe we need to get a buck of chicken to offer to Jobu to take White's curse off.
By the way I think Boof should just be called Boof, drop the Bonser. It should just Boof on the back of his jersey and he should just be refered to as Boof. Ala Ichiro, Prince, Cher, Madonna...
Posted by: cal at May 30, 2006 02:53 PMWho do we have DH? Do you mean besides the back-up catcher hitting over .400?
Posted by: clay jr at May 30, 2006 03:12 PMYeah, Clay, but then Mauer pulls a hammy and then we're stuck with LNP behind the plate, since NBP can't catch once he's in the lineup as DH. Ain't gonna happen, not on a regular basis at least. I do agree that it's time to look ahead and work with the young guys; just the fact that our rented "big hitters" are currently batting sixth and seventh (or is it seventh and eighth? It's way down there, that's all I know) tells you all you need to know about their impact, or lack therof, on the lineup. Give me Kubel and Cuddy and Rodriguez over those guys; we're not going anywhere this way.
Maybe we could send Rondell or Tony to the Brewers for Corey...? *sigh*
Posted by: adidasman at May 30, 2006 03:53 PM>>and to Las Vegas where it spent some time at the >>Bellagio, hired some prostitutes, got caught up in >>a whole crooked defense contract deal, and married >>some chick it met at the bar. Oopsie.
Uh ... this could happen to anybody. I'm just sayin' is all.
Posted by: mmmmarkiep at May 30, 2006 04:08 PMThe least LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA could have done to help our boys out would have been to have Romero come out and pitch 1/3 of an inning...
Posted by: Stacy at May 30, 2006 05:00 PMcal, clay..."Who do we have DH?" isn't a problem when you're talking about replacing White. You're not losing anything defensively. Base running? Last night (and Sunday at Mil) proved that ain't an issue.
So what's left...his slugging...his overall average?
Get rid of White and put Kubel or Ford in there. Some regular play time would do them good. I like the idea of using Kubel and Lew in a platoon. Switching out Stewie and Hunter when they need the rest.
But when it comes to replacing White, there's really not much worse you could get. A PITCHER could probably hit just as well given time.
Posted by: Torhu at May 30, 2006 05:11 PMTorhu,
Liriano is batting .500 right now, how about having him DH games when he doesn't pitch? Don't forget that Babe Ruth started out as a pitcher, too.
Posted by: twayn at May 30, 2006 05:32 PMadidasman: "...but then Mauer pulls a hammy and then we're stuck with LNP behind the plate, since NBP can't catch once he's in the lineup as DH."
Keep in mind that it's not that he CAN'T catch once he's in the lineup as DH, it's just that in the unlikely event that Mauer gets dinged up and NBP has to catch, we lose the DH for the remainder of that game and the pitcher takes Mauer's spot in the order. Might be worth the risk against lefties although you'd like to see a little more power potential from your DH.
mmmmarkiep: Kind of my initial thought, too. Who hasn't had an occasional road trip gone awry (or wry for that matter)? Just bad timing maybe, but that can happen.
Posted by: JimCrikket at May 30, 2006 05:58 PMHey as for Puttin one of our pitches at DH Santana was signed as a Right handed thorwing Shortstop and he hit pretty well in Inter league .273.
Posted by: Paul at May 30, 2006 06:04 PMTo my brethren, in the land of Paul Bunyan, mosquitos and chicken and wild rice soup:
Once, I lived in the great northland, but have since moved to the dry heat of Pa-ho-nix, AZ. These games against the Mariners, Angels and other AL West teams are wonderful for me. For maybe 20 games per year I am not required to sneak out of the office early to see our Twins.
I like to view these road trips as the old Missions of Alta California, and myself the missionary showing the savages of the southwest a true baseball team.
Remain strong, Twins Fans; and know that when the Twins are out here, they are treated well.
P.S. For those who want to see a beautiful ballpark before 2010, Chase Field here is pretty nice.
P.P.S. Seriously, nobody here has heard of chicken and wild rice soup. Please send some.
Also, remember that Justin was drafted as a catcher and he is our backup catcher. if something happened to mauer and redmond if they were both in the lineup, he could probably do it. apparently he's even excited that it could possibly happen... so thats another possiblity...
Posted by: Hannah! at May 30, 2006 06:45 PMCan anyone tell me why Gardenhire left Crain in for a 3rd inning? He turned a very solid outing by Crain into another disappointing one for Crain to dwell on longer.
Posted by: Richard at May 30, 2006 07:23 PMI was wondering about that Duke Cunningham autograph baseball on EBay.. the seller "JackAmoff2006" has a -97 rating..
Posted by: TD at May 30, 2006 07:57 PMI too went to bed thinking we won. Just could not stay awake any longer. Looked through our local paper at 6AM and could not figure out where the scores were. Found out it missed deadline. And playing at 9 tonight means will not be able to watch much.5:45 comes too early. I will surely have distorted dreams!
My sister and BF going to the game tonight. A couple yrs ago they went to one there. She brought her homer hankie and they wore their Twin's shirts. At the end (they won) some heckling drunk they had been ignoring during the game pushed her down a couple rows of chairs. The heartening thing was how many people came to help them and apologized.
So I'm glad she is getting back on the horse as they say as was quite upsetting.
Thanks for correcting me, JimCrikket. I always get that bit about the DH wrong. I had a feeling I was off as I was typing it - but, as usual, I didn't let that stop me.
