so can Corey Koskie be the ex-boyfriend of the day for FINALLY ending this game?

heh

woohoo Chairman! what a game!

Posted by: kafumbly at May 20, 2006 10:06 PM

Kind of a no-brainer...

Now, where's that stadium vote?

Posted by: heraldguy at May 20, 2006 10:10 PM

It's scary that Mauer needed to have that big of a night, as in the long run we needed ALL of those 4 RBI that he came up with.

Him, Cuddy, and Morneau. Just WOW!

---------------

Twins staff:
188 pitches (126 for strikes)
Starter: 109 pitches
Homers: 4 (for 8 runs)

Brewers staff:
217 pitches (119 for strikes)
Starter: 19 pitches
Homers: 1 (for 1 run)

Nice job from the offense as a whole tonight, although the Brewers inability to find the plate helped. Note that I did not say "nice job from the position players", since the defense was once again very poor.

I just have to keep repeating "No such thing as a bad win. No such thing as a bad win." to myself.

Oh dear - my vote would have been for DJ Cuddles ;-)

How awesome is it when a Team Batgirl boyfriend gets 3 RBIs, and another player gets 5 RBIs (well, 4 RBIs and 1 RWI), and neither of them are BOD?

The guys better be careful, because they might start to spoil Beeg. "What do you mean only one worthy BOD tonight? Sooz, get in there!" It could get ugly.

Posted by: Will at May 20, 2006 10:19 PM

Hooray for the Chairman!

I have deep sympathy for the Twins' pitching staff, however. The hapless hurlers are bravely taking the mound night after night in front of what is the worst defense in all of baseball. By a lot.

Posted by: ctate at May 20, 2006 10:20 PM

I feel as thought I'm being indoctrinated by the Chairman right now.

Posted by: Ryan at May 20, 2006 10:37 PM

VIVA EL CHAIRMAN!!

Posted by: Stacy at May 20, 2006 10:59 PM

We have the worst pitching in baseball by alot so I don't feel sorry for most of our pitchers. If they pitch the way they should there would not be so many problems on defense.

Posted by: Nora at May 20, 2006 11:36 PM

 for the Chairman!

(Will, in regards to Cuddles 5 RBI: We decided that RBI clearly stands for "Run Brought In.")

Posted by: Just Beth at May 21, 2006 12:04 AM

Nora, I'm afraid it's not just the pitchers. On balls in play -- that is, not strikeouts or home runs -- Twins fielders are letting their opponents hit .350 overall. The only one who's noticably above average is Joe Mauer, and he's behind the dish. Batista, Castillo, and Morneau are all downright terrible with the leather.

*cross fingers hoping for the good Doctor to improve*

Posted by: ctate at May 21, 2006 12:07 AM

Sorry but pitchers are not pitching well. Defense can't stop all of them! Pitchers have not been pitching well that is why we have new starters in the rotation and not on the field. And alot of the pitches by Radke and Silva ended up as home runs. Pitching gets no sympathy from me. Their ERA is the highest in the MLB by quite a bit. Pitchers have no one to blame but themselves.

Any word from the state senate yet on the new ballpark? We are in Milwaukee so not able to watch tpt 17 or listen to 'CCO. - Sammy

Posted by: twinsfansam at May 21, 2006 12:49 AM

Tonight I was stuck by more Brewers fans than I was last night at Miller Park, but the 16 runs was nice to see. Too bad the relief pitching tried to give those runs back.

As for the Twins defense, I don't see why people are getting down on the D. 6th best fielding % so far in the bigs this year. No errors tonight, while Milwaukee has 3 huge errors. Castillo showed some great range. Batista had a tough night in the field, but that's nothing new. Cuddy did a great job out in RF with his play to gun down Moeller trying to stretch a hit into a double.

Well, I will be pumped for game 3 at Miller Park watching Boof show his stuff as the Twins go for the sweep!

Posted by: Shaun at May 21, 2006 01:06 AM

Well, did you leave the park early? because Castro had an ugly fielding error in the bottom of the ninth that caused the Twins 2 runs.

Posted by: Steven at May 21, 2006 01:43 AM

In addition to Castro's play that was ruled an error, there were at least three other plays (bloop hit over Castillo's head, Cuddyer's near-catch and drop by the wall, and the hot grounder to Batista) that could well have been made.

None of those were ruled "errors", but most defenses make at least one of those, probably two. When Jacques Jones was in RF and Corey Koskie at 3B, the Twins might have made all three. I think fans remember those days fondly and the great defense and think the team is still that way. They aren't.

This is reinforced by the discussion of fielding percentage, as though it's a good statistic that correlates well with helping the pitchers avoid runs. It isn't. There are more advanced ways to assess how good a defense is, but I think the forums are a better place for a numbers-intense discussion like that.

Posted by: neutrino boi at May 21, 2006 01:55 AM

I would just comment that those three plays mentioned (Castillo, Cuddyer, Batista) would have been excellent plays if made but certainly not errors or near errors.

And I'll leave it at that...........it was a LONG night!

Posted by: Dr Jane at May 21, 2006 01:59 AM

You could also comment that if the pitcher made a better pitch it would not have gotten to that point OR that the defense is not as sharp because the pitcher, like tonight, had a hard time getting batters out which led to more time for the defense to be on the field. It has been said that this is a problem for the defense plenty of times.

Posted by: Nora at May 21, 2006 02:11 AM

On a lighter note... did anyone else notice how Hendrickson was, um, adjusting himself before the game started? I thought Nutty might have found a new friend, but then half an inning (and a pitching change) later, Scotty was doing the same self-adjustment.

So I've come to the conclusion that Nutty has a counterpart in the Brewers organization. Perhaps he calls himself Cuppy.

As a first time poster yesterday; I didn't really expect the Chairman to be celebrated so quickly.
I'm out here having to watch MLB.TV on about a 5" corner of my screen; but at least I didn't have to stay up all night for the stadium vote. News was out just before dinner. The last game I saw live was in Fenway. I'll not be unhappy if the next one is under Minnesota skies.

Fielding % is the least meaningful defensive stat, and even that is misleading as it is decided by amateur scorers who want to offend as few players as possible. Range factor is much more meaningful, and is decided by statistics. The Twins are the worst in baseball in range factor.

Yay. So happy that the Chairman got another. Thanks for the grad present B-G!

A tip of the hat to Chairman Joe, with nods to Cuddy for 5 RBI and the Doctor for a 3-for-5 night.

Posted by: twayn at May 21, 2006 10:04 AM

thank god for a new ballpark, i didnt think this day would ever come.

Posted by: Karl at May 21, 2006 10:08 AM

Hard to argue with the BOD choice, but it would have been hard to argue with so many others too. I certainly think that, regardless of the outcome of the game today, the Minnesota legislature (or at least those who voted for the stadium) have earned honorary BOD status.

Oh, and btw, neutrino boi, I might just comment that perhaps you're paying a bit too much time noticing.. um.. adjustments.

I suppose we should all blame BG and Nutty if so many more people have their attention focused just below the waist of every pitcher who takes the mound.

Twins 2010: Our ass is grass!

Posted by: kw at May 21, 2006 11:13 AM

Neutrino boi--Jones may well have caught the ball that Cuddles didnt but he would not have picked up the outfield assists that Cuddles has including last nite. Give Cuddles a month in right field to get accustomed!!!

Anyone else notice that Castillo's range is better on grass?? He is also the best 2B on the double play in the last few years--big improvement over Rivas.
