RD was thinking about the Twins of '05 and suddenly, on his shoulder, appeared ol' Dewey Missum, wanting to know what RD was thinking about the guys who didn't make the leap from '05 to '06. Dewey Missum sometimes shows up on days when the Twins are idle and he can get a guy thinking about the past.
In the spirit of that conversation, RD decided it would be kinda fun to pose the question that comes so naturally to his pal. "Do we miss them?" Dewey Missum asked ol' RD.
"Well," RD replied, "some more than others."
"Do tell," Dewey Missum said.
Jacque Jones -- Kinda miss him. Don't miss the feeble at-bats against lefties and the way he never quite figured out how to get into position to throw from right field, the way Lewwwww did against the yankees on Friday night. Miss him because he was a good guy and S. Cheeks' bud, not because of what he could be contributing. And, heck, I can always watch him on WGN.
Matthew Lecroy -- Sorta miss him. A nice bench player but dangerous if he needs to be in the lineup too often. He looked good in the Washington tri-colors.
Luis Rivas -- Don't miss him at all. So many chances, so little to show for it. I'd rather have Castillo, Rodriguez, Punto or Boone out there. Well, 3 outta 4, anyway.
Bret Boone -- Hahahahahahahahahahahaha! Falling off the bar stool hahahahahahahahaha!
Jason Bartlett -- Sorta miss him. Yeah, RD pines for him a bit, but concedes that Castro is doing what needs to be done at shortstop, and it wouldn't do anyone any good to bring up Bartlett to sit him on the bench.
Michael Ryan -- Don't miss him whatsoever. When Ryan's on your roster, then you're not really a playoff team.
Corky (Corky) Miller -- Miss him as much as RD can miss a guy who didn't get a hit last season.
J.C. Romero -- Really miss the JC of '03, don't miss the JC of '04 and '05. It's too bad that, every now and again, JC didn't realize that he wasn't the smartest guy in the room.
Joe Mays -- Don't miss him. Just watched the Bitch Sox' Konerko take him deep a few minutes ago and RD is trying to figure out who's taking responsibility in the Royals' front office for signing the guy.
Terry Mulholland -- Kinda miss him, just because it was cool to have a guy who hit 83 on the gun when he was throwing the patooey outta the ball. Good hair and diet.
Al Newman -- Really miss him. RD's still bummed that Newmie and Gardy couldn't work things out, but that's the way stuff goes sometimes. Bad hair and diet.
And from days gone by...
Henry Blanco -- Sorta miss him for the role he filled in '04 when The Chairman couldn't play. But in the big poicture he's a .200 hitter with a greta glove. I'd miss Mike Redmond more.
Doug Mientkiewicz -- Miss him so much. Dang, he should be playing first base so that JustIncredible could be languishing in the minors awaiting his chance. Yup, a .280, slap hitting first baseman. Just what every team needs, don'cha think? Trading him to Boston probably ruined his shot at being a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Corey Koskie -- Miss him enough that I'd love to see him on the bench, backing up T-Phat! at third, JustIncredible at first, getting some licks as a DH and breaking chairs at opportune times.
Torii Hunter -- Really mi... Oh, wait, he's still here.
Anyone else wanna pick an ex-Twin or three and tell Dewey Missum what'cha think?
Denny Hocking: So beyond glad that he is gone.
Posted by: Donnalove at April 17, 2006 09:00 PMBobby Kielty: he should have grown out his hair earlier...
Dustan Mohr: I still remember when he broke one of the molina's wrists scoring against LAAAAAA. That was intense.
On the Joe Mays note, he gave up 5 runs in the first innin against the BitchSox this evening, on two homers. Ouch. Don't miss that! Plus, we still get to experience that with radke!
Posted by: Hannah! at April 17, 2006 09:12 PMIt's hard not to miss David Ortiz, both because of his great personality and his performance since he left the Twins.
Posted by: Nick at April 17, 2006 09:20 PMDear Mr. Davis,
So is Mr. Bartlett your boyfriend?
Curiously,
Batgirl
p.s. When I think of Corey Koskie, Mr. Missum sits on one shoulder and his friend Howe sits on the other.
Posted by: Batgirl at April 17, 2006 09:32 PMScott Stahoviak: Miss him, just because he reminds me how much better things are now. Also, it's hard to beat that name.

Posted by: RonDavis at April 17, 2006 09:58 PMCorky Miller got released by the Mariners system yesterday, after I saw him at spring training and adopted him as my AAA Boyfriend. Apparently this is the kiss of death. I didn't realize he was a former Twin.
I notice nobody's mentioned Eddie Guardado yet. Could that be because he blew the game today? argh.
Posted by: jenninseattle at April 17, 2006 10:05 PMI miss Eddie-but then I've always been the type of person who loves roller coasters.
I really miss Corey- I always thought he was a great guy. Plus he had good defense and that lumberjack commercial about him was pretty funny.
Posted by: kierra at April 17, 2006 10:25 PM Guuuzzzz- Just because it was fun to yell it when he came up to bat and it was always a guessing game as to if he was going to try or not!
McCracken- HAHA funny last name
AJ- Only because it was fun watchin him mouth the F-bomb through the TV
Kielty- I miss his crazy hair but now we have Guerrier for that one:)
Ok I do miss..Big Boy Lecroy and Koskie the canadian the most though.....seriously!!
Dear Batgirl,
Bartlett was last year's news. I'm pretty sure RD has a new boyfriend these days.
I won't give away who it is, but you might wanna think about putting together a "T-Phat is My Non-Sexual Man Crush" tee.
Just sayin'.

Posted by: TwinsGoddess at April 17, 2006 11:29 PMwe have baseball package so today we got to see Dutin Mohr strike out right before Eddie G gave up the hit&homer this morning and then J.J. K for the cubs tonight. I think they said J.J. was 2-23,1hr 4rbi. Ortiz is the one that got away, but I miss Koskie most.
Posted by: Mike&Jane at April 18, 2006 12:18 AMWhat, no love for Matt "horse steroids" Lawton?
Posted by: dave paisley at April 18, 2006 12:44 AMJason Kubel - I miss having a right fielder with potential to be ford than league average.
Tony Fiore - Proof that even mediocre players can win 10 games in a year with a 3.50 or less ERA. Never underestimate the power of dumb luck. Lesson learned; have a nice life.
Grant Balfour - Unfortunate name. Good fastball. Vulnerable soft tissues.
I meant "potential to be better than league average", not "ford than league average". See, if I'd replaced "league average" with "Ford", that would make some sense. Because he is. Why I would replace "better" with "ford" (and then not capitalize it) is anyone's guess.
Posted by: neutrino boi at April 18, 2006 02:35 AMAt first I was pained to see the hate'n on some guys I really miss personality wise. But I've come to a relization about myself. I guess I want about half my team to act, sound, and kind've even look like bar league players. Don't get me wrong I like going to the playoffs and beating the Yankees as much as the next battling. But baseball is more to me then winning. I want to believe that the boys are having fun out there, because I'm having fun watching 'em. I also like to see players with passion, even if it is a little misplaced sometimes.
The guys I don't miss are the ones who thought they were to good for Minnesota. I've been really disappointed with JC this year in particular. And of course there's always a particular former Yankee who will go unamed, who I honestly believe didn't realize till it was gone what he had here in fly over country.

Posted by: talldrinkowater at April 18, 2006 03:43 AMI miss Dustan Mohr because it was my favorite chore.
I miss Lester Straker because his name reminds me of "streaker".
I miss Alex Cole because of his massive goggles.
I miss Otis Nixon because he looked 127 years old.
I miss Ron Coomer and his lack of a neck.
And I miss David Ortiz...for obvious reasons.

Posted by: Kurtis at April 18, 2006 08:03 AMI miss AJ, Grant and Dustan Mohr.
All the boyfriends that have gone before.
I miss AJ. I don't want him back, mind you, but I do miss him.
And I miss Grant Balfour.
And, well, Corey. But if Phat Tony keeps playin' like he's been I'll miss Corey in the same way I miss AJ.
Good ones everybody. I'm so misty… I can only second some already mentioned names:
Al Newman. A link to the glory days. His aggressive third base coaching - he sent everybody, unlike the new guy. His jabbering with the fans and picking fights with Bitch Sox pitchers. Most definitely the great post-game interviews with Dan Gladden. I was so bummed that one year Terry Ryan's sitting at his hospital bedside for two weeks while hes' in a coma - the next year he's unceremoniously shown the door.
A.J. His attitudinal flips of the ball to the mound after third strikes. His interviews on the Sunday night talk shows. "People say I yell at the batters while their swinging. I don't yell at the batters while their swinging." His bizarre unflappability.
Koskie. He made it fun to watch the Twins field third base again, even if it was not regularly. His effortless-looking home runs, even if they came in streaks. His devotion to the Twin Cities and the Twins. I heard him giving Torii a great ribbing on Torii's MLB.com radio show "Roaming [?] with the Hunter," circa '03. "Roaming with the Hunter?" he kept asking. "I didn't make it up. Now don't go spreading that around the locker room," Torii begged.
Ortiz. I always rooted for the big left-hander. Seemed like an excellent choice to fill Hrbek's batting shoes. After he left, I had a chance to buy one of his actual Twins jerseys at the Roseville Twins store for $200. Can you imagine what that would be worth today? I have been kicking myself for not doing it. Serves the Twins right for letting him walk out the door for nothing.
Dustan "Crazy Legs" Mohr. My brother and I try hard to follow that guy's wanderings since he left the Twins. I think we last spotted him in Boston.
I miss Matthew LeCroy. I know he wasn't a great player, but he always did his best, and he always played with enthusiasm.
I miss Joe Mays, too. Not the Joe Mays that's pitching now, but the Joe Mays that was actually good for a year or two. I wish he would come back, although it doesn't seem likely to happen.
Posted by: Jeff A at April 18, 2006 08:38 AMWell, without being too trite, I miss Ron Davis... Eddie G. is the only closer in recent memory with the same sort of "let's get it exciting" finishing touch. But nobody could touch RD when it came to the exciting finish, win or lose. Frankly, Nathan makes it look so easy that one wonders why they even play the ninth inning. But RD, there was a closer who made sure you got full value for your ticket.
Posted by: Russ at April 18, 2006 08:58 AMRON "THE MALIGNANT" COOMER: Man, I miss his great, "man-I-love-this-game-put-me-wherever-you-want" attitude, his roly-poly body, and his Everyman persona. He got me through the years when the Twins were hard to watch.
COREY KOSKIE: Everything that's already been said, and just the fact that he was a good guy and you could see it a mile away. I really wish we'd gotten him back, even though his injury-prone body betrays him all too often.
CHUCK KNOBLAUCH: I miss the Knobby of the first few years, the one who was the quintessential leadoff hitter and made stupefyingly great plays on a regular basis - not the petulant idiot who sat at the end of the bench and alienated himself from everyone on the team, including TK. He went south pretty fast after Puck retired, and I always felt the two were connected somehow, but that boy sure could play.
Posted by: adidasman at April 18, 2006 09:17 AMCristian Guzman: Don't miss him at all. He is like Luis Castillo, except lazier and less patient at the plate. The Twins were right to let him go.

Posted by: k-bro at April 18, 2006 09:18 AMI miss Scott (I did it with a news anchor) Erickson. He was so dreamy back in the day.
Posted by: MrsMorneau at April 18, 2006 09:22 AMI miss Hawkins, the 98mph throwing, 8th inning guarentee man. Not the failed starter, or the failed closer, or the disgruntled clubhouse guy.
Posted by: fehler at April 18, 2006 09:47 AMi miss brian harper, what a solid person over all and a great catcher and a better than average hitter.
Posted by: Karl at April 18, 2006 10:04 AMA lot of quality guys (and a few not-so-quality) mentioned. But to be brutally honest, there are only three that I can say I honestly miss.
Ortiz, for obvious reasons.
Koskie is the one that really never should have gotten away and I still believe TR will end up regretting not making the effort to get him back this year when he was available.
Finally, and probably most of all, I miss AJ. I have NO idea what we'd do with him if we still had him and the players we got in return for him made "the trade" a great deal for the Twins, but I just miss having that attitude around, both on the field and off. Him being with the BitchSox also makes it more difficult for me to despise them as much as I realize I'm obligated to do.
Posted by: JimCrikket at April 18, 2006 10:17 AMk-bro: BITE ME. In Rick Reed's first full season as a Twin (2002), he led the staff in wins, ERA, innings pitched, starts, strikeouts-to-walks ratio, fewest walks (only 26 in 188 innings!) and WHIP.
Posted by: LaurieNY at April 18, 2006 10:18 AMI miss Matthew Lecroy for his community service at local schools. Experts speculate that bullying is up 50 percent since he left town!

Posted by: Roscoe at April 18, 2006 10:25 AMI miss Harmon, Tony-O, Rod Carew, and Cesar Tovar.
I miss Junior Ortiz, Phil Roof, George Mitterwald, and Tom Tischinski. I don't miss Tom Nieto or Sal Butera. (Go figure.)
I miss Good Ole' Met Stadium, and when the Twins finally vacate the Humpy-Dumpy Dome, I'll miss that too.
I miss poring over the morning paper for the box scores, as opposed to getting them instantly online.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls: I miss Halsey Hall.
I miss being young enough to avoid feelings of nostalgia for a past I did not live through. Fortunately I now have a 1 year-old boy to keep me focused on the future.
JOE B
PS: Mr. RD, you're doing a fine job in Bat-Girl's absence. Thanks!
PPS: Oh yeah, I miss Kirby, too.
I miss Newmie--the third base coaching box is not the same now...no emotion.
I also miss Old Man Mulholland--every team needs a 40 year old lefty--especially one that will bring Gardy back to earth every once in a while by telling him (Gardy) he sucks when Gardy pulls him (OMM) out of a game.

Warmest personal regards,

P.S. As much as he made my heart stop, I liked Eddie a whole lot. I loved Corey, of course, due to his overpowering Twinness (I notice Reusse jacked that term from this blog). I really miss Tom Brunansky, though. He may have been the coolest guy that ever did wear a Twins uniform. I remember his picture from the 1987 yearbook fondly, leaning with his wife on their red sports car, his big hair outmatched only be hers. I still get angry thinking about how we traded him for Tommy bleepin' Herr!
P.P.S. I most certainly do not miss Luis Rivas, J.C. Romero, and Cristian Guzman one tiny bit. Everyone else has a spot in my heart of varying softness.
Posted by: Chris at April 18, 2006 01:50 PMI miss Grant Balfour. Yes, he has an unfortunate name, but he was my Twins Boyfriend before I even knew what Boyfriends were.
I miss Mike Restovitch because he, too, was a former Boyfriend. And he broke seven windows with homers his Rookie League year.

Mrs. TD misses Otis My Man Nixon soooooo much.
I don't miss Frankie "Oh Sh*t!" Rodgriguez. Wow, was he bad. He made people yearn for LaTroy The Closer.
Frankie "Sweet Music" Viola.
Jeff "The Terminator" Reardon.
Tommy Herr.
Kidding on the last one...
oh, I also miss glenn williams. I know he's not gone, just in the minors, but he got a hit every major league game he played in, which is pretty sweet.

I miss homerun Houston Jimenez.
I miss Mike Marshall. Great closer and pitched more than one inning in relief in multiple games.
Posted by: Brundlefly at April 18, 2006 04:15 PMYeah, I miss Tewks and what TK called "the Entertainment Pitch" - I watched him get McGwire out twice at the Dome with that majestic, fluttering thing during McGwire's 70-homer year. And Mearsie...it made me sad to see his career collapse when he went to Pittsburgh. Two more good guys. And I can't believe no one has mentioned Molitor - I miss him, and wish he'd always been a Twin. He was a joy to watch.

I don't miss JC. I defended him for so long, and he broke my heart one too many times. He is dead to me.
Plus two more. I miss Brent Abernathy. Another cute little plucky middle-infielder. Not that we need him, I just like having those guys around.
And *looks around* *whispers* I miss...Denny Hocking. I know, I know! But he was super-utility, and I love that. One year he fielded at least 10 games at 7 different positions. Like a proto-LNP.
Posted by: twink at April 18, 2006 05:44 PMoh, for Pete's sake. people do know that poor Rick Reed was one of JFC Romero's victims, don't they? you can't blame Rick for JFC's evil-doings!
I miss Brent Abernathy, too, twink. he was adorable. and he would have loved the new pixie vests, so he wouldn't have to mess with his sleeves every time he came up to bat.
I miss Augie Ojeda! I have no idea why. for some reason, I just really liked him.
one guy I will NEVER miss is JFC Romero. he can eat smelly worms and sleep in cow poo.
Posted by: kafumbly at April 18, 2006 06:15 PMI miss Kirby, Chili Davis, Chucky, Hrbek, Greg Gagne, Leius, Harper, Dan Gladden, Erickson, Tom Kelly, Shane Mack, Randy Bush, Jack Morris, Tapani, and of course, Rick Aguilera.
I miss the '91 World Series team, if only because that was the last championship for any Minnesota team. I was only 8 years old, so I remember it, but didn't appreciate it like I should have. Now, as a dedicated Minnesota sports fan for life, I crave a championship.
I miss Rick Agulara (sp?) and Jerald Clarke only because he gave me a baseball when I was a kid, I dont even remember him playing
Posted by: Bemidji School Boy at April 18, 2006 07:09 PMI also miss watching Carlos Silva pitch at the Dome, because I loathe the pixie vests and will boycott any game featuring the vests. We're wearing them again tonight, so both vest appearances have come in Silva starts, leading me to prematurely conclude that jersey choice is up to the pitcher, and Silva is a pixie vest fan.
It's tough, but it's just one man's humble attempt to show the Twins management that the pixie vests are not merely lame, but are in fact super lame, and must be abandoned with all deliberate speed.
I hope it's just a phase, because I love the power sinker and its tendency to elicit routine grounders.

I miss dougie because hearing people try to pronounce or spell his last name was just so damn entertaining.
I miss chuck like a kick to the balls. He gets no leeway based on the way he left here.
Good subject RD.
Miss Al and his generous behind. He was fun to watch giving signs. Hopefully the "new guy" loosens up.
Miss Matty. Just seemed like a nice guy.
I liked that Mulholland brought some gray hair to the team.
Like someone said, it is not all about winning. I like to see the chemistry and some humor. That is what I find so endearing about Batgirl and company.
Sure, you don't miss J.C. Romero of last year, but how are you guys liking Alexi Casilla and his .340/.375/.434 line in high-A ball?

I sometimes miss JJ and Guzy and AJ
I miss Twinsman running the halls of Middlebrook hall with his Homer hankie tucked in as a cape
I miss walking home after work and if I felt like a dome dog for dinner just walking up and getting a ticket
I'm not sure if I miss seeing a Twins game with only about another 2 to 3 thousand people in the Dome
I'm going to miss Torii but the one who steals homers and not the one who is speaking out of both sides of his mouth saying he wants to stay but often thinks of going
I'll miss Radke b/c he never left when he could have
I miss being there and being part of the roar of the crowd to support our boys
but most of all I miss Kirby
GO TWINS
Posted by: caluofmn at April 19, 2006 03:51 PMWell, I'm a Cubs fan, not a Twins fan, but some of my sentiments are still relevant:
I miss some former Cubs that are also former Twins:
Terry Mulholland: He may not have a hard fastball, but if he were on the Cubs he could ask Maddux for a few tips on being 40 and making other teams look stupid with an 84-mph fastball.
Doug Mientkiewicz: Ok, you seem not to like him, but I remember he was with the Cubs for a season and I seem to recall he was one of the better players on an admittedly cruddy team that year. On the other hand, we have Derrek Lee. I'll miss him a lot more if Derrek Lee spontaneously combusts or something.
Other Cubs:
Mark Grace: Heckuva baseball player, loved the game, and he's from my hometown. Wish he'd won his WS ring with the Cubbies though. Still, that series was over the Yankees, who swept the Cubs in the 1932 and 1939 series - not that I have any right to be bitter about occurances that long before I was born.
Kerry Wood and Mark Prior: Yeah, *SURE* they'll come off the DL. For a week or so maybe.
Rod Beck: Now there was a closer. A bit of Mitch Williams in him, but that just makes it fun.
Mordecai Brown: Ok, so I'm not old enough to remember him, but seriously, he had three fingers on his pitching hand! Well, more like 3 and a quarter, but that doesn't make as catchy a nickname. Also, it seems that fingers on one's pitching hand have an inverse correlation to ability -- just ask Antonio "Six-Finger" Alfonseca.
Harry Caray: I hope for his sake that they have Budweiser in heaven... I just wish he could've seen the Cubs win the title, because what a call *that* would've been. Keep singin', Harry. R.I.P.
I miss a lot of the Twins from my youth - Carew, Bostock, Hisle, Ford, Wynegar, Cubbage, Smalley, Mauch. Also miss these guys from the Championship crew - Puckett, Hrbek and Gagne. More recently I miss JJ, Everyday, Hawk, and Dougie.
Don't miss JC and Knobby (even though he's a fellow Aggie) or anyone else that wanted out of here.
Hope Torii doesn't get added to that list above.
Did I say I miss Puck? Yeah, I know I did but since I miss him at least twice as much as anyone else....
Posted by: BayareaTwinsFan at April 19, 2006 11:17 PMI miss Chip Hale.

Posted by: Mr. B at April 20, 2006 12:59 AMPsyMar, Dougie was never a Cubby...
Posted by: kafumbly at April 20, 2006 11:39 PMI miss LaTroy Hawkins, the closer who couldn't.
Willie Banks, who the Twins could've traded (along with Derek Parks) for Dave Winfield loooong before they picked up Winfield.
Pat Mahomes, who up to last season tried to return to the majors with nothing on his pitches.
Frankie Rodriguez, who didn't want to relieve because they didn't get paid as much as starters...but not pitching pays even less, Frankie.
Aaron Fultz, the lefty the Twins lost not once, but twice, who adequately filled the bill, as he now does with the Phils.
Joe Roa, made to be playoff roster less. Never complain unless you have a real job waiting in the wings.
Brad Thomas, who came north with an injury and got major league pay for the season. Whatever happened to him after he signed, and was disabled again, with the Red Sox.
Jesse Orosco, who at least ended his career with the team he should've started it with, in the big show at least.
Mike Fetters...one game and down and out...forever.
David Lamb...the Casey Blake could've been.
And just think, if things had gone wrong, the Twins could have an outfield today of Brian Buchanan, Mike Restovich and Bobby Kielty with Dustin Mohr and Mike Ryan in reserve! And for $8 million less than we are paying Torii Hunter!
