Will, he's coming even closer to you. And take good care of him, Ball Wonk.

Bat Girl must be trying to get us away for the stadium talk.

Posted by: Paul at February 9, 2006 12:24 AM

The Nats must have thought, "Gee. The last player we got from the Twins didn't work out. Let's get his polar opposite the next time."

Guzman is fast. LeCroy is slow. Very slow.
Guzman has good defense, but lacked effort. LeCroy lacks defensive ability, but not for lack of effort.
Guzman went something like four months with a HR in 2004. LeCroy hit 17 HR in limited action last year.

Dang, I liked LeCroy...*sniff*

Heckuva pinch hitter!

Posted by: talldrinkowater at February 9, 2006 05:34 AM

Best of luck to you, Big Guy. And remember, "explore the space" (my son randomly yelled that to him once when we were at the dome, which caused Matty to hit a homerun).

i'm not sure i want the season to start quite yet, i'm too nervous. i'm really not thrilled with any of the moves we've made.

not that leroy was going to be our saviour or anything.

Can't stop laughing - good luck you Matthew

oops - that should be good luck to you - see what happens when you type and laugh at the same time =)

I think LeCroy was picked up to be mostly a pinch hitter for the pitcher, a role in which, if he's used properly, he can truly flourish. Not as good as DH, but...

Good luck, Matthew. Minnesota will miss you!

Posted by: JustBeth at February 9, 2006 08:16 AM

Matthew's coming to my neighborhood - he's going to love it here. All the fried chicken anyone could ever want. I'll be seeing you at RFK, Mister LeCroy; if you thought the Dome was a dump, wait until you see your new home. But at least DC is, unless stupider heads prevail, going to build a new park someday...

Sorry. I'm still fuming. I'll try to stop.

Posted by: adidasman at February 9, 2006 08:16 AM

KCF? Heck, we've got Popeye's. All the chicken, twice the grease. And Jerry's, home of the Big Bubba sub (a cheesesteak with bacon and double swiss). And plates of Terlingua red, five-way, at the Hard Times. Lots of plates. Don't anybody worry; we'll keep Big Country well fed.

BallWonk is way psyched to finally get a good Twin like Matty Go Boom on the Nats, even if Frank will probably find some old-timey excuse to completely misuse his talents.

I can't wait to take LeCroy out to dinner. I'll mention it when I randomly bump into him at Pentagon City.

Posted by: Will Young at February 9, 2006 09:20 AM

This makes me sad. I always hoped against hope that LeCroy would make his way back to us before the offseason ended. He was my fiancee's favorite player (on account of his penchant for telling kids not to be bullies).

Posted by: Roscoe at February 9, 2006 09:36 AM

LeCroy coming to the Nats--interesting. Good luck Matthew as others have said--this is an area with wide variety of food choices--dont forget to try square pizza at Ledos.

I agree with BallWonk--F Robby will find a way to screw up Matthew--its just what he does best.

Sure, Matty comes to DC just as I'm about to move *back* to MN. He and LaTroy will be the ships I pass in the night.

Oh, and how the heck does one get to Pentagon City? The best I've been able to do is spot signs for it across the river.

Hmm - Johnny Damon does a 'Corey' =)

Oh, Matty....I miss you. The popcorn ball is sitting in my room, never to be used again....unless I see you play.

At least he got picked up. *nods* But I still miss him.

Posted by: Candace at February 9, 2006 03:30 PM

I'll miss Matty. Remember when Gardenhire had him pinch-run for Mientkiewicz in a spring-training game? Good stuff.

But, am I the only one who's much more worried about TR losing one of his key lieutentants? We don't want to see many people like Wayne Krivsky go: if we lose our front office, we become Kansas City without a nice stadium.

Posted by: BadAndy48 at February 9, 2006 03:56 PM

Love the two contrasting pics. A good ol' boy to the core, but my oh my, does he clean up well.

Posted by: ump47 at February 9, 2006 10:51 PM

Matty is a living breathing NL double-switch in 3X pants.

I heard the year's first "Twins Territory" spot on the radio this morning. It was about Johan, and how we should call all opposing batters "Pine Grabbers," because every time they face him they have to "grab some pine" (as in bench).

I have a strong suspicion that "grab some pine" is the G-rated version of "SIT DOWN BITCH!"

Batgirl gets ripped off... again!

Posted by: TwinsGoddess at February 10, 2006 11:39 AM

"Pine Grabber" is G-rated? Not in any boy's locker room I ever got dressed in, it's not. Shoulda just gone with "SIT DOWN, BITCH!" which has the virtue of being a straightforward cuss and not the kind of cheap double-entendre that makes every boy above the age of six blush.

Aside from Minnesota, the Dakotas, far western Wisconsin, a hotly disputed stretch of Iowa, and a tiny slice of Huntington Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia, what exactly are the borders of Twins Territory?

Posted by: BallWonk at February 10, 2006 12:39 PM

I've heard a couple of the new Twins Territory commercials on Cities97 =)
I like the Johan one

Everybody loves a guy who eats possum out of a can. And he's a great dad. So I can't dig on him too bad.

But he just didn't fit with the Twins, mostly because he only did one thing well--hit left handed pitching. The Twins have a need for this, yes, but not at the expense of a guy who can hit right handed pitching off the bench. There are just a lot more right handed closers and set-up guys than left handers. And having two pinch hitters severely cripples your bench. So the Twins chose to go with teh switch hitting Sierra instead of th one-dimensional LeRoy. I'm OK with that.

Now what the Nats will do with him is anyone's guess. The article said he's a decent first baseman. I agree, just like I'm a decent billiards player if you don't mind a partner who scratches every other shot. And he can't really catch much anymore. So all he'll do is pinch hit, and the Nats will find out in a hurry that he struggles against hard-throwing right handers, which fits the description of most late-inning bullpen guys over in the senior circuit. And once you do get him on base, you have to use a pinch runner for him. If you're using him to pinch hit for the pitcher, you end up using two guys to do one job, further hindering your bench later in the game.

Good luck Matty. Remember, stay away from road kill if the crows beat you to it.

Bad New prepare yourself poeple this is bad.

Ron gardenhire has pulled his hamstring while bowling and may be out for spring training.

Baseball sure has some werid injuries.

Excellent point, BallWonk. If it hadn't been 7:30 a.m., I might have considered that...

Posted by: TwinsGoddess at February 10, 2006 04:28 PM

Man, the Twins better be great, because they've managed to get rid of nearly every guy that made following the 'good' Twins for the last 5 years or so.

Posted by: Will at February 10, 2006 07:31 PM

Note to self: Finish comment, then post. And being coherent is a bonus. Let me try again.

Man, the Twins better be great, because they've managed to get rid of nearly every guy that made following the 'good' Twins for the last 5 years so much fun.

Twins Territory is a state of mind! Eventually the drinkowaters will be moving to SoCal, and as far as I am concerned, Orange County California will be Twins Territory!

"I wish I knew how to quit you," is the line from the movie.

Yours pedantically,

I hate to be the bearer of more bad news, but the word-that-we-will-not-mention has come back up according to the Strib.

It might be bad news Twinsboy, but it's something that has to be talked about and planned against by the grass roots. From the posters I've seen, Bat-girl has a far ranging following around Twin Territory.
Take the time to contact your congreemen, legislators and other peopel that would have any impact on getting a stadium! You contact 10 other friends who would also do so. Kinda like a legal pyramid scheme right?
Without the Twins stadium deal, children would grow up without a pro team in their state. the elderly wouldn't be able to follow baseball on their tvs or radios at home. full - fledged baseball nuts like those of us here would be left to root for... the Brewers? ....the WHITE SOX???
And what team would Team Bat-girl be traded to??
In my heart of hearts.... the fate of the Twins franchise will be decided in the next three or four months.
I fear no more new memories will be made.... just the old ones. The team of Carew, Puckett, Killebrew, Santana, etc will be just a memory.
Have to go now, I'm sorry for the negativity, but times wasting, and I have a few emails to write.....

Posted by: kbrew at February 11, 2006 08:20 PM

Ball Wonk, Twins Territory definitely extends up the Yellow Line from Huntington Ave all the way up to Crystal City just south of the Pentagon.

Posted by: Will Young at February 11, 2006 08:38 PM

Good Luck Matt! I just plain like the guy and am sad to see him go. It is like trading your favorite uncle who is nice to all the kids and dogs. He was a friendly face. Linda

Bye, big boy. I'll miss you.

That city better enjoy your sense of humor as much as your boom stick.

According to Patrick Reusse...Mr. Pessimism strikes again.

Let's all hope he ends up being wrong about this too.

Though he does have a very good grasp of this situation, in general I have learned to take Reusse's remarks with a grain of salt over the years.
He is forever crying doomsday, even when things are going well for the team.

Honestly, I feel for the guy.
He's got one of the best jobs in the world.

Wouldn't you think he'd find a little something to be happy about on occasion?

But Kbrew is right.

We need to make our voices heard.
Rock the Capitol people.

Let them know we're mad as hell, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

Write to the Governor. Write to the Speakers.

Write to everyone in the whole freakin' legislature.

Don't limit your e-mails to just your own reps. Write to all of them.

Here are the links you will need to get started.
