This is NOT the kind of news BG intended to interrupt her holiday respite for, but:
Former Twins great arrested on robbery charges.
Jeff Reardon, one of the top relief pitchers in major league baseball history, was charged with a jewelry store robbery and held pending a bond hearing Tuesday.Posted by Batgirl at December 27, 2005 09:26 AMThe 50-year-old Reardon, who ranks sixth in career saves, walked into Hamilton Jewelers at the Gardens Mall on Monday and handed an employee a note saying he had a gun and the store was being robbed, according to Palm Beach Gardens police.
Bad boys Bad boys, what 'cha gonna' do when they come for you?
Posted by: Hannah (the second) at December 27, 2005 10:53 AMThat Amish looking guy was one of my favorites...it's too bad. The Strib reports he is claiming it may be because of some medications he's on...I doubt it but I hope so.
Posted by: twinsluvver at December 27, 2005 11:41 AMHe says his medication made him do it. This seems so out of character that you have to wonder if he isn't telling the truth.
Posted by: Attyfan at December 27, 2005 12:55 PMWhen I saw this on WTOP.com here in DC--I was shocked--I still am.
Dont really know what to say--maybe the meds caused it--As a parent I cant imagine what it is like to lose a kid like Jeff (and Tony Dungy) did--maybe thats part of it--dealing with the death of a son like Bert said...
Truly sad...
On another note--Honorable BG--noticed the countdown to spring training--its cool--makes the winter and offseason not seem endless...thanx
His spokesman says he is in no financial trouble, so I'm inclined to believe that his medication led him to the bizarre behavior.
Posted by: tim in tampa at December 27, 2005 01:20 PMRestovich's Amazing Flying (wayward) Bat from spring training has made it into msnbc.com's reader's choice pics.
Posted by: BAT bandwagoner at December 27, 2005 02:42 PMThe Readon saveth and taketh away.
But honestly, very sad.
Posted by: soccerfan at December 27, 2005 02:51 PMIt was not his medication; it was the lack thereof that made him do it. He is on an antidepressant, as are we all, and, when he does not take it, he gets depressed, and, when he gets depressed, he holds up stores: a common symptom of depression. Al

Yeah I know
But now that Toronto has Glaus, what are they going to do with Coskie ?
Jeb have you heard from your ex yet ?
p.e.m.
Posted by: public enemy mike at December 27, 2005 06:51 PMWhat????
Posted by: Rivasfan at December 27, 2005 08:01 PMStarTrib reports that Jeff Reardon underwent angioplasty for heart problem just last week. In addition to death of son that certainly suggests depresssion could be a problem. Until more information in, this is a case where a "medicine fog" could be an explanation. I hope so, for his sake. :-(
Posted by: Dr. Jane at December 28, 2005 08:35 AMThis whole thing is very sad. I really have to believe that, as Dr. Jane puts it, "medicine fog" has to be somewhat responsible. He doesn't need the money, he gets away with all of $700 and the cops pick him up in a restaruant down the street, eating.
Does that sound like a hardened criminal?
Posted by: mjm at December 28, 2005 05:27 PMToo bad about Jeff, but it always makes me feel old when I start seeing the guys I liked as a kid get arrested for stuff. I just wanted to give Bat Girl a shout out as inspiration for me starting my own Detroit Tigers blog. It is tigerdroppings.blogspot.com, and I'll follow my Tiggers through thick and mostly thin and the rest of the top division in MLB the mighty AL Central.
Posted by: Brad Bates at December 28, 2005 05:48 PMBrad, the site looks good.
Any news about Jeff's case? Haven't heard if they figured anything out.
In other news, ESPN.com is pushing Bert for the Hall. Click my name.
Posted by: Neil at December 29, 2005 10:15 AMIt's a very tough deal, but put yourself in the place of the person in the store looking at a note suggesting violence. People get blown away by other people with medication issues every day. If Reardon was black, and not a famous ex-ballplayer, you would not be reading about angioplasty and suicide.
Posted by: Duquephart at December 29, 2005 11:34 AMVERY, VERY TRUE DUCK FART.
Posted by: EISHA at December 29, 2005 03:57 PMDid you have to add the "was black" part? The celebrity status is enough to get all kinds of excuses brewing.
Look at all the players that get busted for steroid, drug, or other offenses. They all get people trying to make excuses for them.
Posted by: Torhu at December 29, 2005 06:25 PMActually, if the person who allegedly got away with $700 from a Palm Beach jewelry store weren't an ex-ballplayer or celebrity of some sort, I kinda doubt we would have heard about it at all in Minnesota, DF.
Let the case go through the system. Reardon should be treated the same as anyone else in this predicament.
Posted by: mjm at December 29, 2005 07:29 PMforgive me if this has already been posted somewhere, i've gotten behind with the holidays, etc.
i found a fan survey at twinsbaseball.com, but what makes it notworthy is the question about the dreaded pixie vests. make your opinion known!

Corey Koskie: Rumored to be Traded to Twins
Corey Koskie: Rumored to be Traded to Twins
RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Saturday, December 31, 2005
Update: Minnesota and Toronto have talked about a trade that would send Koskie to the Twins with the Blue Jays paying a signifcant portion of Koskie's contract, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Recommendation: Koskie's stock has fallen so far that the Blue Jays will likely have to eat much of his contract in any trade. The Twins haven't really found a replacement for Koskie at third base since he left last season, so this deal could make sense.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE
Joe Christensen in today's Strib says not to get too wired up over a trade for Koskie, it doesn't seem likely according to him. Link below, or click my name.
