But Will the Sportswriters There Get His Name Right?

From Sunday Super Shooter Charley Walters:

Free-agent Twins outfielder Jacques Jones, who was paid $5 million by Minnesota last season, could end up with a $20 million, three-year offer from the St. Louis Cardinals soon.

You can't blame Charley, really. Jacque's only been with the team for, what, six years?

Imagine if it had been Shigetoshi Hasegawa. . .

Well I hear thru the grapevine that Charley was a huge Jacques Cousteau so - I can see why the misspelling =)

Much love

Well, if we find out that there are Jacques Jones, I suppose the Cardinals can have one of them.

Is it just me or is $6.67 million a year for Jacque insane? This sounds like an agent trying to start a bidding war when there isn't one.

Shot. Poo. Darn.

I was hoping the Mariners would pick up Jones. His left handedness would work well with Safeco field.

oh well, the ups and downs of the hot stove league.

Ouch.

I was kinda hoping Jonesie would go to San Diego--then he can be close to his momma.

Posted by: ForMorneau at November 28, 2005 08:25 AM

I was hoping the same... SD is my secondary team so if we can't keep JJ, I want him to be a Padre.

Posted by: Say Rah! at November 28, 2005 08:43 AM

I don't want Jacque to go at all, I'm still in denial.

I don't blame old Shooter for the mistake as much as I blame the copy editor. Anybody on the sports desk who's even half-conscious should have caught that. Shame!

As for Jacque(s), I hope he gets a nice, fat contract from somebody. It's time for him to get his payday. I think I'll miss his home runs, but probably not all that pathetic flailing he likes to do.

This is one of those deals where I really don't blame the Twins for not paying Jones top dollar and I don't blame Jones for getting the money elsewhere. It's a thin free agent crop this year so the odds are he can get a big payday from someone. He's paid his dues so let him get the money now. But with things as they are, the Twins can't afford to overpay him that way. I do believe he will be missed, though.

Just one more thought... if you're really upset that he's leaving, call your governor and your state reps. If the Twinks had a stadium deal in place, there's a much greater chance that the payroll limit would have been raised enough to fit a respectable offer to Jones.

I, too, was on the Jacque(s) to Seattle bandwagon. The Ms are my second team, and I'd like a good reason to cheer for them again. Plus they've had that hole in left field for over fifteen years, now, and li'l Sweetcheeks would be a great fit. (Much better than Kevin Mitchell, one notable auditioner, who didn't fit at all. Much too big by that point in his career.)

Not too worried about Jones moving on, there are others who could be just as inept at the plate. What the team needs is a decent middle infield - it all starts by having a good middle from catcher out to Hunter in center. With no good SS or 2B the weakness of the team really shows and it's getting depressing as all get out going to Baltimore and watching them get beat by the O's... that place has to be cursed... 7 years and I've only seen one win! AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!

My perception of stuff like this is that Walters is consistently fed by player's agents. Don't forget that he was once a player himself. And no, I don't mean "playa", though he might have been one of those as well...

So this sounds like something he heard from Jones or his agent. I kind of suspect Jacque will end up getting $20M guaranteed, but I wonder if it won't be for four years.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I will very much miss my NSMC :(

Oh dear God, no:

I know the Twins were similar offensively to the Royals, but do they really have to look like them?

Posted by: Skorch at November 28, 2005 04:19 PM

Remember that the Rangers also wear a sleeveless home jersey. If we hit like them, I would be happy.

meh. I won't miss his strikeouts. sorry, JJ, but seeyabye.

(I will miss his smile, though...)

In all seriousness, why the heck are the Twins not interested in keeping Jacque back is beyond me. All he has done is produce and win. What is there not to like? I am really disgusted with the job this organization has done this off-season and this is one of them. Jacque was the team's best hitter for Pete's sake last year. How letting him walk is going to improve our team?

"If the Twinks had a stadium deal in place, there's a much greater chance that the payroll limit would have been raised enough to fit a respectable offer to Jones. "

You can say adios to the stadium deal. Bud Selig just ripped the state government just the other day for not making any progress about the stadium deal. The way things are looking, we might as well be in our last year of Major League Baseball in the Twin Cities this coming season.
