BatMiscellany III: The Return of BatMiscellany

Joe Mauer: Fashion Plate.

Jacque Jones:Plan B for San Diego?

Johan Santana: Robbed! (Robbed, I say!)

Chicks: the GMs of the future? (Ridiculous. Chicks don't like baseball.)

Robbed...I'll say so. And it's not just us Twins fans that think so. Take a look at the ESPN baseball page. The poll today so far shows (at least when I wrote this) that 62% of people would most want Johan in their rotation. It's a landslide in every state...even California.

Posted by: SDave at November 9, 2005 10:56 AM

I like that, Perry Ellis.

Classy, not like endorsing plantar wart medicine or something.

Chairman= classy.

Posted by: Eric at November 9, 2005 11:11 AM

I can't read about the Chairman =( Can someone tell me what is says?? I'd so greatful =)

yeah - chicks and baseball - no way - I mean really then everything would be pink and there would be no crotch grabbing -cussing and spitting allowed and well then what fun would baseball be then??
that's just crazy talk ;-)

Running a baseball team takes a lot of work. When would this dame find time to cook her man dinner and vacuum?

God, I am so kidding. From what I read it sounds like Kim Ng has the respect of people who know what they're talking about. Her gender shouldn't stop her from getting the job.

Posted by: Skorch at November 9, 2005 11:35 AM

if chicks ran baseball all we would be teams full of longball hitters, because.... oh forget it

Posted by: mike at November 9, 2005 11:40 AM

WW-

It says Joe is shooting some work for Perry Ellis down in Puerto Rico for endorsements.

P.S.- Woman who know their baseball= x10 hotness factor.

I don't know what's more ridiculous: (a) Santana's stats, or (b) the fact that apparently no one paid any attention to them.

Posted by: Salt-Man Z at November 9, 2005 12:20 PM

"Woman who know their baseball= x10 hotness factor"

No truer words ever spoken Eric!

Posted by: SDave at November 9, 2005 12:55 PM

AAH! Joe Mauer, the model. CANNOT WAIT for those pictures to come out!

"I don't know what's more ridiculous: (a) Santana's stats, or (b) the fact that apparently no one paid any attention to them." -Salt-Man Z. SO TRUE.
I deep down kind of figured he'd be robbed, but seriously. The voters need to get their heads on straight.

I want to be a GM.

Posted by: Stacy at November 9, 2005 12:58 PM

Eric -
Thanks for the recap - you too batgirl =)
I guess the Chairman is too modest for the Calvin Klein undie ads tho those are probably more tame then the Abercrombie Ads I've seen ;-)

you all know I was kidding about things being pink right?? I know baseball - I really do!!

I think a female GM would be a breath of fresh air - but in my gut I don't know if it will be now -tho I'm hoping I'm wrong.

"I don't know what's more ridiculous: (a) Santana's stats, or (b) the fact that apparently no one paid any attention to them."

Agreed.

At least we can take solace in the fact that we've had the chance to watch the best pitcher in the AL these past two years. That means a lot, because apparently not many other people are getting the chance to see his starts anymore.

Posted by: Will at November 9, 2005 01:32 PM

Something from the Mauer article that's very nice to see.

"Meanwhile, a postseason magnetic resonance imaging exam showed no damage to the left knee that sidelined him for two months his rookie season."

Posted by: Will at November 9, 2005 02:24 PM

Re: Kim Ng. That would be beyond cool. Even better than the female umpire in the Texas League.

Posted by: jenninseattle at November 9, 2005 02:37 PM

Joe Mauer's father, Jake, on the Twins catcher doing a photo shoot for Perry Ellis clothing: "I told him that if you can't buy that stuff at Wal-Mart, then I've never heard of it."

Posted by: msb at November 9, 2005 02:51 PM

OK, with the political situation in Venezuela and the earlier rash of crimes against MLB players, I automatically thought that Santana literally was robbed. Kinda puts the whole Bartolo Colon situation in perspective.

I wouldve given the CY to Rivera, Johan if it had to go to a starting pitcher. Check out my site.

Dear BG and all Female Girl-like Batlings

What would be the first move you would make as GM of your favorite team ?

mike

Posted by: mike at November 9, 2005 03:14 PM

miggity mike daddy- that's two days in a row I've laughed out loud at jokes of yours (first Reggie's farm team, now the longball)... I feel like we're in an XM Radio commercial ;-)

WHY CAN'T WEEEE BE FRIENDS, WHY CAN'T WEEEEE BE FRIENDS?

And while baseball-savvy chicks do indeed get hotness x10, you've got to give hotness x5 to the ones who at least display an interest and get the pink baseball caps.

Posted by: let's go mets at November 9, 2005 03:44 PM

Pink baseball caps are the devil.

I'd personally rather have a ladies' t-shirt with the equation for VORP. Maybe with a caption like "Shopping is hard. Let's go estimating the effect a batter's offensive performance has on his team's number of runs scored."

Posted by: Deanna at November 9, 2005 05:37 PM

Careful, Deanna. You could start a riot with talk like that in some circles. At a SABR Convention, they might carry you off and make you their Queen.

Posted by: frightwig at November 9, 2005 08:53 PM

Johan deserved to win Cy Young. Even some dude on ESPNEWS said so. On the bright side Bartolo Colón is hot!!!

Posted by: Rivasfan at November 9, 2005 09:24 PM

This White Sox fan agrees- Santana was robbed. He has been the best pitcher in the AL for at least two seasons now, in my estimation.

Posted by: Aaron at November 9, 2005 10:36 PM

First move as GM of my favorite team? Beg Pohlad to spend more money and give a presentation as to why it's better to spend a little more money on this team. Being that he would probably go against that, I'd probably go look for a power hitter. That we could afford. Because we need a power hitter. Or at least someone that can consistently make contact with the ball. Since that is, you know, the point of baseball. *nods and glares at the Twins lineup*

re: Pink hats. I HATE PINK HATS! My philosophy is why can't us girls be treated with a little respect. Why can't we wear the normal team colors and be considered normal fans? Why do we have to get pink hats and pastel colors? I find it a little degrading.

Posted by: Candace at November 9, 2005 11:40 PM

The more I look into Ng's track record, the more I hope she gets the job.

That, and she's kinda cute.

My first move as a female GM of the Twins would be to rub my face on Sweetcheeks's bicep.

They'd let me do that, right?
:) :) :)

Posted by: MRG at November 10, 2005 08:04 AM

Is my team's uni color pink? Nope. NO PINK HATS!
As for my first move as GM...Move Cuddy Bear (and I WOULD call him that...) to second and go get a third baseman. Don't ask me which one, I'm still deciding. I'd also have a pow-wow with Torii and Justin to get their "feud" fixed. Or else do some ass kicking on both their parts!

Posted by: ForMorneau at November 10, 2005 08:18 AM

Two things.

First, 62% of people would want Johan in their rotation? Does that mean 38% of people are legally braindead? I cannot understand this. I mean, let's say you're St. Louis or the 1998 Yankees or whomever. EVEN if you considered Santana a 5th starter (which he would never be on any team in my opinion) you'd HAVE to want him on your team. That makes no sense.

Second, I must disagree with the chatter about the pink hats. Mrs. YankeeFan has a pink Yankees hat that she wears, not just to games. It goes with blue jeans and a t-shirt just like the blue ones do, and she likes it. Who am I to poo-poo something that supports my team (it is likely that she would wear a blue one to games, but much less often otherwise). So more team support is good. Better yet, my neice (turning 4 in January) has a little pink hat and she is adorable in it. Don't know how often she wears it, but I feel like there is a greater chance of her becoming a baseball fan if she likes to wear the gear, and she's in a pink phase (I blame Princesses and stuff). So anything that raises the likelihood that she gets into baseball (and maybe becomes a true baseball fan like all the women who post to this site) works for me. Yes folks, there is a place for the pink hat in our hearts and lives. Embrace it.

YankeeFan

P.S. Anyone who is familiar with my 2 year long proclamation of "the '80s are coming" will understand how handcuffed I feel by my team during this offseason. For a twist, I tried to GM the Twins instead of the Yankees and came up with very little, short of signing a big bat (I know, I am a genius). I will say this -- I like Lew Ford, and might look to get a middle infielder for him, if possible. I'd go as far as saying (as a YankeeFan now) that I'd love to see in in pinstripes (roaming left or center) but the problem is that I can't for the life of me figure out how to get him. Any offers?

Posted by: YankeeFan at November 10, 2005 08:45 AM

Does that mean someone will be dressing Joe now? That's nice. Maybe Redken or Bed-Head will offer him a deal next...

And we all know who the real Cy winner was. Can't nobody take away Johan's specialness.

Posted by: X10 at November 10, 2005 08:59 AM

1)Bartolo Colon is.... h- ho- *what*???? I can't even type it. Ick, he is SO unfortunate-looking.

2) I know Batgirl isn't about the stats, but I'd probably buy Deanna's t-shirt if there were one. There would also need to be something Twinsy on it.

3) The first (and continuing) thing I'd do as GM is improve communication among players, and between them and coaches/management. I'm sick of this "they're not talking to me" and "SOME PEOPLE should play harder" crap. That's no way to run a team, ask the Eagles. Secondly, I'd work the current players' asses off to regain the moral high ground; while they do that, I'd sweet-talk Pohlad for cash for a hitter. Women can do that. Trust me, I'd probably get some Manolos* out of the deal too, and convince him he was getting the better end of the stick.

*Guys... Manolos are SHOES, not some really cool baseball players you don't even know about. But those would be good too.

Posted by: aussie at November 10, 2005 09:05 AM

Oh. And NO PINK HATS.

Posted by: aussie at November 10, 2005 09:06 AM

I love ya YankeeFan, but don't even look at Lew that way. You can't have him.

The pink caps are fine for the little girls and the true fans (you won't catch me in one though). I must say I really detest the cutsey little college girls that wear them when they only come on college ID night once a year and flirt shamelessly with whatever beer guzzling moron brought them there and don't pay attention at all to the game and scream things like "Go Kirby!".

Ugh.

Posted by: HooliganKat at November 10, 2005 09:13 AM

Ok, first, any Twins player in a well-made suit = *drool* (even NBP)

Second, JJ will have to do what he finds best for him. I, personally, will miss him but I have already prepared my heart for the loss of many of my current Twins boys.

Third, Johan will persevere and such an OBVIOUSLY overwhelming pitcher coming in third based on what out-dated stat alone just MIGHT be the catalyst that is necessary to finally get those bozos to look at WHY they choose someone and update the program a tad.

Fourth, right... women GM's will manage for the LONG ball.. *snort* cause the men don't do that right now.. that's why small ball is such a rare concept...

and NO PINK HATS... good grief.

I am not a fan of anything bearing a sports team's logo that does not have the proper team colors -- so definitely a no on pink hats. And those all black and all white hats you'll see (mostly) guys wear? Just as bad.

I want a "Kim Ng is my non-sexual woman crush" t-shirt, though.

Re: Pink Hats

Aren't the pink hats sold as a part of a breast cancer charity or is that just here ? I don't think it's a bad thing for girls to wear pink hats.

I know the Eagles have pink jerseys that sell also (oddly enough Owens and Mcnabb)and they have a pink tie for the men.

Posted by: mike at November 10, 2005 11:35 AM

I found another interesting piece of BatMiscellany about a soon-to-be former Twin, Matty LeCroy, from ESPN.com. Bill James says that Matthew is "built like a catcher, only more so."

I thought that was pretty clever. :)

Posted by: Ryan at November 10, 2005 11:48 AM

The first thing I'd do as GM of my favorite team is stay FAR FAR AWAY from AJ Burnett. We just got rid of Jeff Nelson for (please oh please) the last time, we don't need another one.

Pink is evil. Pink baseball clothes for women doubly so.

Posted by: jenninseattle at November 10, 2005 11:53 AM

Pink is not evil - only evil when applied to sports apparel - unless it's part of the team colours - Hey nobody thought the Pink Ladies were sissies - did they??

Anyway from the Twins Site:

MINNEAPOLIS - ST. PAUL, MN -- The Minnesota Twins have announced plans for TwinsFest 2006, scheduled for Friday, January 27 through Sunday, January 29 at the Metrodome. Many current, former and future Twins players will appear throughout the course of the weekend. A complete list of players who will be in attendance will be released in the coming weeks.

Wonder Woman,

I am happy for Chris -- the first Cardinal since Bob Gibson to win a Cy Young! Now if Albert gets his MVP I will be (somewhat) consoled. Or at least, I will stop hiding under the bed when someone mentions Roy Oswalt.

I'm still annoyed that Santana didn't win his, though.

Redbird

Posted by: Redbird at November 10, 2005 01:47 PM

Wonderful ideas, all (except Yankeefan -- as Batgirl sometimes says: "Mitts off").

I especially like both Deanna's and Redbird's new shirt ideas. Having recently seen a local co-ed wearing a shirt that says "I kiss better than I do math," I'm craving more signs that our culture is not collapsing with a giggle.

However, I may have to save my pennies, if I am to be GM. (Of course, then I'd get to play with Carl Pohlad's pennies. Too bad he won't free up any of the bigger coins.) Finally, finally, I would be able to indulge my Tony Clark obsession. The D-Backs signed him to an extension, but his value isn't going to be higher than now for them, and they've got Chad Tracy (whom they should be playing at first, not thinking about playing at third). I think I could put together a package that would pry him loose, featuring some of our valuable but volatile pitchers.

Then, no offense to the new guy, but I'd bring in Don Baylor as hitting coach. I know his recent history, but that wasn't in Minnesota. What I remember him for is that when he was with the Twins, he reportedly worked with Greg Gagne, and Gagne looked like a better, more confident hitter. That's what I want from my hitting coach.

And yes, aussie, the moral high ground would figure strongly in my approach. I think, in fact, that I would send scouts out to tour the globe, to haunt our off-season players, to pop out from behind bushes, yell "THINK FAST!" and smoke baseballs at them. I want them ready when they hit the field. (Okay, and I was also a youngest sibling, so I never got to torture others in that way. Power. Bwah-ha-ha-haah.)

Posted by: hrunting at November 10, 2005 01:57 PM

The problem I have with the pink caps, people aside, is that you can't even tell what team they represent most of the time. You could have a line of five people wearing pink baseball caps for five different teams and it'd be mostly indistinguishable unless you squinted hard to see the white logo against the light pink background. It sort of says to me, "I'm wearing a pink baseball cap so I look cute," not "I'm wearing a cap to support my team."

Hrunting -- it gets worse, there was recently a "girlcott" on Abercrombie and Fitch for putting out women's t-shirts with slogans across the chest like "Who needs brains when you have these?"

Hm, maybe I'll have to see whether the equations themselves are actually copyrighted; VORP and EqA are copyrights of Baseball Prospectus. After all, it could work in with a theme here for a shirt... "Sassy Stats, not Assy Bats", perhaps?

(We're all about stats over in the Seattle blogosphere, so it's okay ;) )

Boy, I would sure love to see either Austin Kearns or Wily Mo Pena in a Twins uniform next season.

Posted by: Eric at November 10, 2005 02:32 PM

Redbird -

That's some good company!

If Albert doesn't win - well I don't know I'll find someone to throw pebbles at-rocks hurt-how many times does he have to be a 'bridesmaid'??

Well -maybe it helps that the best play -or best moment in the playoffs- was the homerun Albert hit off of Lidge -I can't remember if that was an ESPN or Fox thing -
I wasn't sure when the ball was going to drop - and to do it - with 2 outs - 2 strikes - 2 on - down by two runs - and on the verge of elimination well that to me is unbelievable!

The ESPN poll asked people to choose which AL starter they would pick to ANCHOR their rotation in 2006. From a list including Halladay, Colon, Buehrle, and Johnson, 61.3% to date would take Santana as their ace for next year.

If I'm GM, I would trade Lew Ford for an upgrade at 2nd base. The Yankees can have him--just send us Cano. :)

Wow, I would so wear Deanna or Redbird's shirts. How 'bout a nice neutral white (or away gray) that you could wear anytime, anywhere.

Interesting about Ms. Ng. We here in LA had never heard of her - who really tracks the front office staff, anyway? I think it would be nice if the Dodgers continued their tradition of breaking down barriers - Jackie Robinson and his surviving family members still get people out to the ballparks here - but she'd have to be "twice as good" as a guy to get the same props. La plus ca change....

On a completely unrelated note, not many of you probably know this, but there's a wildcat sanctuary in Isanti County. They take in all sorts of wildcats that usually began their lives as mistreated pets and try to give them an environment in which they can live the rest of their lives as wild as they can. They currently have about a dozen wildcats ranging from servals to a bengal tiger. In fact, a few of their cats were profiled in National Geographic Kid's Magazine a few years ago. (http://wildcatsanctuary.org/Archive/OneCoolCat_NatlGeoKids2003.pdf -- must read, great half-page story)

Well, Isanti County has decided to ban sanctuaries, even accredited ones, in their county. Hope is not lost, though. There's still an opportunity to write letters to Isanti County urging them to reconsider. There's also a public hearing next Wednesday. If anyone could spare a little time in trying to help these cats have a healthy home, it'd be much appreciated.

For more information (including details on who to write to and when and where the public hearing is at), go to the following (it's also linked in my name):

And with Guuuuuuz-man gone, who else would we chant for? It's too late to start 'Stewwwwww'ing.

Posted by: X10 at November 11, 2005 09:11 AM

If I were GM, I would have Ozzie work one of his spells on Terry Ryan (sacrifice a live chicken, perhaps? click my name) so that he would trade us Santana. I would even give BG a pony in return. I would get the Indians to trade me Travis Hafner and Grady Sizemore (I might need another pony for this one). Then I would resign Konerko no matter what the cost and schedule a meeting with AJ to discuss "grinder rules" :)

I'm surprised at the disdain for the pink caps. I love my pink cap... and my purple one... and my blue one... and my "normal" black one! I have friends who have red and green ones as well. Something to go with every outfit and cheaper than Manolos!

I'm not sure what the translations are. Johan's sitting down bitches in class (or an airplane?). Matty is diving in front of Mauer. J.Jones playing "marco polo" with DJ Cuddles.

and our "worst player"...

The Chairman.

ouch. He's probably right.

My husband has to hear my rants all the time about the pink hats. I hate the pink hats. On little girls, well, ok, but if you are a grown woman, no. All it tells me is you don't know much about baseball, but just want to look cute.

The green ones I believe are for the Irish fans, of which there are many in Boston and here in Chicago (The White Sox sell lots of green team apparel)

But I believe in wearing the team colors.

Posted by: Cathy at November 11, 2005 04:37 PM

Random thoughts for the BatMiscellany:

Love that Korean cartoonist -- his renderings of Gardy are uncanny -- but no way is Morneau our "worst" player. Unless you are comparing him to Mantle or Maris, which is how the poor kid started out his season.

I sure wish I could read Korean. I'm dying to know what's going on in the Ozzie cartoon.

Personally I am not a pink kind of person, but I think any acknowledgement that baseball is popular among women is a good thing.

Just say NO to Frank Thomas in a Twins uniform.

And thank you, Eileen -- it's oddly satisfying to learn I'm not alone in thinking Alexei Urmanov one of the world's MOST ANNOYING people (Elvis Stojko was robbed).

I might stand alone on this one, but I don't see a problem with pink hats. I have one and love it. I know my baseball and am a true fan and do not own it to "look cute", I just like it.

Okay, so I posted a comment and it's now showing up. If it's just my computer, feel free to delete this one, lol.

Didn't realize pink hats were capable of arousing such ire in some folks... especially since I think most of the women missed the point that chicks in pink hats are only granted half as much of a hotness factor as true fans.

But what I'm finding particularly surprising is the opinion that it's perfectly fine to look cute in a pair of $400 Manolos but it's "degrading" to wear a $20 pink baseball cap.

Ladies, don't you realize that the only people you're impressing with a pair of Manolos are yourselves, other women and men who aspire to be described as "fabulous"? I'm sure you're creative enough to find much better ways to impress many more people with $400.

I see nothing wrong with straying from the team's official colors... you sticklers probably go to a game, look around and then nudge the person in the seat next to you, saying, "Would you look at that- wearing a road jersey to a home game. How gauche!"

Ok, how about this: The Twins hopes were proportional to Santana's ERA. Hopes high early on... Santana's ERA high. Hopes destroyed in August, Santana's ERA hits the deck.

Bartolo Colon was amazing at just the right time and really helped his team make that playoff push. He was clutch. He was vital. He was invaluable.

Santana may well be the finest pitcher in the game. But his ERA, the stat everyone raves about, wasn't really that great for Johan until August rolled around. And the award is given to the pitcher who had the best season and benefitted his team the most. (So I would give this honor to Rivera, then Colon, then Santana)

Over the final three months of the season, when the Cy Young Committee described Colon's performance as 'clutch, vital, invaluable, amazing at just the right time, and really helped his team make that playoff push', Colon's ERA was 3.94.

Over the first four months of the season, when the Cy Young Committee described Santana's performance as 'not really that great', Santana's ERA was 3.74.

It's a shame that people don't take time to really look at these things before they settle on their misconceptions.

let's go mets,

I hate fancy shoes too. But then again, I'm perfectly content in a pair of tennis shoes.

Yeah, I'm not a normal girl. *shrugs*

Candace-

You're a true believer so that automatically gives you twice the hotness factor a pink hat girl would get... and eschewing fancy shoes in order to rock the tennies bumps you up even higher.

The same goes for the rest of you true believers. May you come in a Mets version as well ;-)

let's go mets,

Oh, thank you! :) That makes me feel really special and honestly, it cheers me up. :)

Dear Mr Met -

"Ladies, don't you realize that the only people you're impressing with a pair of Manolos are yourselves, other women and men who aspire to be described as "fabulous"? I'm sure you're creative enough to find much better ways to impress many more people with $400."

I don't impress myself much - and I don't have/like nice things to impress anyone
I don't think it's degrading to wear pink baseball items - I just don't like it - is 'not liking' degrading??

By the way - I never ever - ever wear any baseball gear to Twins Homes games - does that make me a bad fan???

Batling Candace- glad to contribute to your wellness ;-)

WW- you bear the marks of a true Wonder Woman... and if your team's successful when you're present and not wearing team gear, you'd only be a bad fan if you suddenly STARTED wearing Twins stuff... never change the routine! For instance, I always wear at least a cap to games and the teams I've supported have an estimated .800 winning percentage... so I'm sticking with what works.

Dear Mr Met -

"WW- you bear the marks of a true Wonder Woman"

it's Monday and maybe I haven't had enough sleep - but are you slamming me or confused by me???

Grady? That's a fantastic idea. Who really wants to be in Cleveland anyway? It so does NOT rock.

Posted by: X10 at November 14, 2005 03:59 PM

X10- that's not what all the little chicks with the crimson lips say

WW- neither slamming nor confused by you but instead praising you for being the kind of confident new millennium woman who doesn't feel the need to impress anyone.

Dear Mr Met -

I gotcha - sorry for the misunderstanding on my part=)

WW

And thanks! =)

Since it is Book Club season AND there is a possibility of Kim Ng getting the Dodgers GM job, I thought you guys might be interested in a fantastic book that I just read: "Breaking into Baseball:Women in the National Pastime". There is a short section in the book on Kim Ng, as well as just about every other woman who was a pioneer in baseball, whether she was an owner, player, front office person, sportswriter or fan. There is just a ton of history in here as well as stories of the individual women. In the prologue of the book, there is a quote from someone in the Twins organization saying that 48% of Twins fans are women! This book was inspirational as well as educational for me. I think you'll enjoy it. Click my name for the link.
