BatMiscellany

Voting has started for the This Year in Baseball Awards. You can give the Vice President your support as closer of the year.

Al over at Bleed Cubbie Blue has a nice ode to Met Stadium.

According to Sid, the Twins have indeed contacted the Phils about Jim Thome. TR is going to win Batgirl's Sweet Talker of the Year Award if he pulls this off

EDIT: As Twins Geek pointed out in the comments, Sid was merely relating that the Philadephia Inquirer reported that the Twins inquired about Thome, but the Geek can't find any such article in the Inquirer and neither can BG. If anyone can pull it up (possibly from another newspaper) let BG know.

Further EDIT Today, Sid says the Twins have confirmed the talks.

. Meanwhile, no one on the Twins' front office is talking to Jacque, sweet or otherwise.

You can also vote there for Torii having the best single-game performance of the year (that time he hit the grand slam and went 5-5), and (unfortunately) for the Twins in the "Funniest Bloopers" category, for the game against Boston that the Legomen refuse to recreate. Not that I can blame them. There was nothing funny about that.

Odd...I seem unable to select Torii's box to vote for him.

Or anybody in the bottom row for that matter.

I could have gone all day without seeing pics of the "Old Met" like that. I'm one of those guys who watched it being built from my back yard. Spent many a Sunday afternoon pedaling over and crawling under the fence for a double-header. Oh well. The flag pole, you may be interested to know, still stands a couple of miles away.

Oh those pictures of the Met are heartbreaking -how sad. I got a little teary - I just remember all the fun we used to have there I swear we were there every Saturday the Twins were in town - the big running rhino they showed on the screen and then the words CHARGE - Bombo Rivera it was fun to say his name - hey maybe the Twins need a BOMBO -my first game ever -sat in the second tier with my dad - sigh........

Joni Mitchell was right - thanks for the link batgirl

Fixed. Merci.

Batgirl is very accomodating!

Those pictures of the Met were heart-breaking. The comments about it looking like something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie were dead on.

Posted by: ndtf at November 3, 2005 02:05 PM

The Met. Now that was a great little ballpark. Sad pictures....

Posted by: Jeff at November 3, 2005 02:54 PM

It is just sad to see those pics of the Met.
I'm not a person who hates the Dome. I have too fond a memory of 87 and 91 to hate the Dome but wow, seeing these pictures make me wonder how wonderful would it be to fly back home and see a Twins game outdoors.

I know the people of MN are a sensible folk, they have to realize that the Twins could really use a new stadium. At least the fans need to come out more, they are winning after all. Trust me I remember those games in 95 and 96 and the Dome should have more people in it to see the games. Maybe this past year is the begining of that.

I hope a new stadium gets done or more supporters come out to the Dome. I hope the Twins never leave, and don't kid yourselves it could happen. I wish I lived back home so I could do more to help make this happen but one or two trips from CA is all this wallet can handle. But I plan to raise my son a Twins fan. No way he grows up a Giants fan.

If we lose this team that means so much to all of us who post here and on other Twins blogs, it would be a crime.

In my mind if they go it's not the North Stars all over again.

Probably in 1984 or so, I bought a pile of seats and standards from the Met at a County auction. I guess there were some nimrods who drove to Bloomington with a pickup, stole the seats and drove back to the prairie, where they were picked up by the local lawmen. They confiscated the seats, which nobody wanted, and I bought them for about $20. I ended up selling a few here and there until I had about six left, and some guy offered me $300 for the pile. Wish I had kept one for myself, but the better half would have had a canary.

Wow. That Pirates blooper better win. With a runner on first, Jose Castillo took a pitch for ball three. Thinking he had been walked, he tosses his bat and starts trotting to first. The runner on first then started trotting to second. The Braves quickly realized there was no walk, so they got the runner going to second in a run down and tagged him out. Classic.

I could totally live with this...

Let's see.... Jim Thome makes 43 million in the next three years, divided by 3... 14 million a year approx...
With the Twins dropping Mays, Mullholland, Mattie, probably Jacque, possibly Lohse coupled with what I've heard in the papers that Pohlad would up the Twins salary from what, 58 million to 63 this year for the right hitter doesn't that come close?
I know that there are some increases coming for the other regular players, but at least it might put us in the ballpark?
And the attraction of a 40 homerun hitter coupled with what I hope is a breakout season for the Doctor could surely convince someone that more fans would come watch some moonshots??
The odds of Jim thome becoming a Twin are very high against it happening...

......but you say we have a chance?......

Have a good one everyone!

Sid says that the Inquirer reported that the Twins have "inquired" about Thome, but I can't find that article anywhere. I know he's been mentioned by reporters in stories, but that's obviously a whole different thing. Can anyone else find a link to the Inquirer story?

Posted by: TwinsGeek at November 3, 2005 08:25 PM

Dearest Eric -

that would be sooo nice to see!!
I think I would pee in pants if that happened - LOL
I know my sister would be THRILLED!!!!!

I really liked Double J, but I kinda think he'll go. I won't spend hours crying like I did for Rivas and Bobby Kielty.

Posted by: Rivasfan at November 3, 2005 09:11 PM

Dear Mr. Geek,

Good catch. I can't find it either. Hmmm....

Curiously,
BG

Posted by: Batgirl at November 3, 2005 11:34 PM

Sid is saying in today's column that the Twins have confirmed they're asking about Thome.

Would you be willing to do a Torii and Juan rincon for Thome, a young arm and cash ?

For the Some Stats, More Sass crowd, Baseball Prospectus has posted their Internet Baseball Awards.

El Presidente gets the nod again for the Internet AL Cy Young Award.

Dear Mr. Mike,

That trade seems a little rich, yes? Our best player and one of the best set-up guys in the league for Thome? The Phils do need a set-up guy--what about Rincon or Crain or Ball Four or JC and a slightly less than Torii caliber player. Oh, and how about a mediocre utility infielder? We've got those by the tons.

Sincerely,
BG

Posted by: Batgirl at November 4, 2005 11:47 AM

p.s. BG is a little skeptical of the idea of trading Torii for offense. We need to pick up a 30/100 guy, but if we lose Torii in the process, suddenly we need to pick up a 30/100 and another 25/80 guy. Doesn't seem to make sense.

Posted by: Batgirl at November 4, 2005 11:58 AM

Those pictures of the Met are sad....

Oh, how I wish I could see baseball like that...sometime in my life....*sigh*

Posted by: Candace at November 4, 2005 12:03 PM

BG,

That last p.s. is frighteningly close to stats.
And I think we could even throw in 2 MUIs.

Posted by: DiggityDino at November 4, 2005 12:09 PM

Dear Batgirl

The reason I used Torii is because of salary. If the Twins were to take on Thome's huge contract one would think they would like to move a player with a big contract, like Torii. The Phillies need CF, 3rd, catcher, and pitching. It would be a deal that would make sense to both teams, imo.

I think this is largely a non-story at the moment but...

Reggie Jackson wants to buy the Twins.
