Also, please see this choice tidbit from an article on Batgirl bad boy boyfriend AJ and his baserunning ploy last night in the The Washington Post:
There was a text message on [AJ'S] cell phone. It was Doug Mientkiewicz, his teammate when both were with the Minnesota Twins, who famously caught the last out of the Boston Red Sox' World Series sweep, then kept the ball."Even when you strike out u cause problems," came the message.
Pierzynski chuckled. Then came another: "Go keep the base, you'll make bank off that photo."
Thanks to Shoeless Joe for the heads-up, and Eileen for the picture.
Posted by Batgirl at October 13, 2005 11:54 AMNow that is some serious sass. Love you still, Dougie.
Posted by: Katharriet at October 13, 2005 12:21 PMmiss you still Dougie
Posted by: caluofmn at October 13, 2005 12:28 PMAgreed with both previous posters. That is some serious sass, and I miss Dougie.
Posted by: Just Beth at October 13, 2005 12:44 PMOne other comment...
For the rest of the series, I propose that the Angels catcher, whoever it may be, make it a point to tag A.J. every single time he strikes out...just to be safe.
Posted by: bubblemint at October 13, 2005 12:55 PMThat would be fun to watch and I bet fun to listen to the announcers wonder why they are doing that to him
Posted by: caluofmn at October 13, 2005 01:00 PMOh, Dougie...*giggles*
It's great to know they still keep in contact *nod* I miss both of them and I'm not afraid to admit it. I miss having AJ here....and I especially miss Dougie...
Posted by: Candace at October 13, 2005 01:04 PMTag every batter and throw to first- just to be sure- hell throw it around the infield and tag all the bases - just to be extra sure -
Geesh - AJ - first LNP ass and now this - what has playing with the Sox done to you??

Posted by: Wonder Woman at October 13, 2005 01:10 PMI miss Dougie. More than anyone else we have lost. What a guy! :)
Posted by: Stacy at October 13, 2005 01:12 PMBubblemint-
I think they should go even farther, just to make a point. Why not tag every batter that strikes out? Instead of the tradition throw-down-to-third, we can now have the chase-the-batter-towards-the-dugout-and-tag-him.
Also, on every force play, they should tag the runner also. Even if he's out by 20 feet, they should go tag him, just to make sure. If it's a double play, they should complete the double play, but then go back and tag the two guys that got out no matter where they are at.
Then, just to top it off, after every Angels strikeout, the batter should immediately take off for first base no matter what.
If those three things were to happen, I might seriously die of laughter.
Posted by: Will at October 13, 2005 01:14 PM"Tag every batter and throw to first- just to be sure- hell throw it around the infield and tag all the bases - just to be extra sure -"
Yeah! That's the spirit! Hell, tag the first base coach, too.
When AJ comes up, I'd tag him after every strike call. The Angels could really have some fun with this.
Posted by: Will at October 13, 2005 01:18 PMI'd say the most fun that Angels could have would be to just beat the living snot out of the White Sox in Los Angeles of Anaheim, and then none of this matters in the long run. It is amazing, though, that A.J. always seems to be in the middle of some kind of mess...and yeah, good to see he and Mint are still in touch. I do miss Dougie, even though they really had no choice about setting him free - he was entertaining.
Posted by: adidasman at October 13, 2005 02:27 PMDougie is a free agent? The Twins need a backup 1st baseman? The batlings start a letter writing campaign to TR?
Posted by: T-Mac at October 13, 2005 02:28 PMGod, how I love Dougie.
Hell, I love AJ too.
*sniffles* How I miss them...
Posted by: CarrieICL at October 13, 2005 03:25 PMI propose that what the Twins need, whether it's Dougie or someone else, is someone with fire. Let's face it, who on the Twins would you expect would start benches clearing brawl? I suggest that the only person, in my mind, that might have that kind of fire would be Punto (not counting Gardy) but LNP is so afraid of pissing off Gardy, he'd never do it. I can't imagine Morneau, Mauer, Cuddy, or anyone else charing the mound. Maaayyybe Hunter. I'll concede Hunter. But for the most part, no one.
When Lew got beaned for the 2nd or third time and he was walking to first and we needed a fire to get back in the wild card and Lima (I think) was jawing at him, well, that was the moment. If there ever was a moment to start a brawl, that was it. But it didn't happen. I guess I'm disappointed that fire is lacking. Love him or hate him, AJ would have been brawling. Probably Dougie, too.
We need some fire.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at October 13, 2005 03:40 PMThis is what the Twins are missing. sniff, sniff, sniff.

Posted by: PJ at October 13, 2005 04:07 PMHey how about Radke when he got wild and got the boot from the dug out?
If we're seriously going to snap our fingers and get one guy back that the Twins have lost in the last couple of years, I'll suggest Ortiz, thanks. No offense to AJ and Doug (or Koskie for that matter), but I'm just sayin'...
Posted by: JimCrikket at October 13, 2005 04:22 PMPJ: please next time a warning for those of us at work. (It was very loud!)
I miss Eddie most of all, although, like AJ, he was replaced by someone as good or better, but watching him in the late Seattle series really gave me good memories.
I would like it if we could get a bunch of former Twins on another team just so I could be sure to watch that team. It's hard tracking Hawk in SF, Eddie in SEA, Dougie in Queens, Ortiz in BOS, Koskie in TOR, Lawton wherever, Kielty in OAK, Mohr in COL, Reed umping (joke). Maybe even HR Milton and Mendoza Guzman should be on this team, just to keep the Twins from embarrassment.
Posted by: amr at October 13, 2005 04:28 PMDougie baseball - backup 1b
AJ - backup C (sorry Redman)
Ortiz - starting DH
And they can all play in a beautiful new ballpark downtown (not that I need that, I'm fine with the Dome and all the memories it holds)
Its nice to be able to dream.
Posted by: caluofmn at October 13, 2005 05:01 PMA while ago I remember somebody saying that Doug Mientkiewicz and Denny Hocking were just babbling idiots. I think it was Koskie. You gotta miss 'em.
Posted by: Rivasfan at October 13, 2005 09:09 PMMore text about it from ESPN:
A.J. Pierzynski's voice mailbox filled up quickly in the hours after the Chicago catcher reached base in wild fashion in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 2-1 victory by the White Sox.
He received his share of text messages, too.
The first one was most amusing -- a text from buddy Doug Mientkiewicz, a longtime teammate of Pierzynski's in Minnesota. Pierzynski was laughing by his locker as soon as he saw it.
It read: "Headlines -- controversial Pierzynski play on ESPN!! Even when you strike out you cause problems!! UNCLE -- best punch out of your career."
Pierzynski, who has become known around the league as an agitator and was even called a clubhouse "cancer" by a San Francisco pitcher last year, said he received "a million" messages and was trying to return as many as possible.
Heh.
I know as a White Sox fan, my opinion is, uh, slanted. But hey, whatever, it's still not even the most egregriously wrong call of the playoffs (*cough* cano-being-called-out-on-interference *cough), karma comes back, interestingly.
Now, we take two of three there, then finish it off in Chi-town, that'd make me happy. Cards/Sox, an I-57 showdown. Fun stuff.
Posted by: Pander at October 13, 2005 09:17 PMI think A.J.'s antics might just get them the ALCS win. Momentum shift, sass, and geez don't they deserve a chance in the World Series--it's been a while. I have to admit I was happy when the Bitch Sox won. I was surprised that the poll showed more batlings favoring LAAA. Come on, let's find a little Central Division spirit!
Truly, Sox and Sox fans--I hope you win it all! Go get those monkey boys.

Posted by: kal at October 13, 2005 11:04 PMDOUGIE SIGHTING!!!
Yes, on tonight's episode of "The Apprentice", the winning team won a day at Shea Stadium with the Mets, and who was front and center, star of the show, making jokes and being his inimitable self??
That's right my fellow Batlings...our Dougie. ;-)
Posted by: bubblemint at October 13, 2005 11:58 PMI think this guy nailed it:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=kreidler_mark&id=2189974
For years, I've been of the mind that instant replay should be kept out of baseball. We watch baseball because we love the highs yet we can't live without those tragic lows... they bring balance to the force, for starters, but the cliffhanger suspense keeps us coming back, hoping, even praying, for redemption. It's the element of human fallibility that can really milk a moment (sometimes a whole game) for all the tragedy it's worth... think of all the phantom double-plays, every time someone gets pulled off a bag, Eric Gregg's 30-inch-wide strike zone in game 5 of the 1997 NLCS...
A blown call in favor of your team elicits a nervous laugh and the guilty feeling that you got away with something. But those blown calls that make Wayne Brady want to choke a bitch help stoke the baseball-loving fires contained within our breasts.
As for AJ's new grabasstic tendencies, perhaps this 1991 image of Ozzie and 3b coach Joey Cora may explain something:

BiSox, indeed!
The whole story was kind of interesting, more so if you don't hate the Pale Ho's:
