The Past is a Lie, Memory Has No Return

From the Strib Sunday in Sid Hartman's column:

Twins General Manager Terry Ryan and minor league instructor Paul Molitor were in New Britain, Conn., when the Rock Cats' John Thomas knocked an opponent with a good blow to the jaw when the baserunner ran into Thomas at home plate.

From the Strib Monday in the Twins' Notebook:

Class AA New Britain outfielder James Tomlin finished serving a three-game suspension Sunday after starting a bench-clearing incident Thursday at Harrisburg, Pa.

With Ryan in attendance, Tomlin delivered a forearm to the head of Harrisburg catcher John Wilson, sparking the incident. Both Tomlin and Wilson were suspended.

Who is right? Who is wrong? Can we ever really know? Can we be certain about anything that happened in the past? Do our recollections deceive us, and if they do, is anything really knowable? Or are we doomed to to wander endlessly in a fog of uncertainty?

The truth is out there, somewhere, my darlings. Find out what really happened and win a job as Star Tribune factchecker!

From Saturday's New Britain Herald (http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=15029869):

"James Tomlin will begin serving a three-game suspension today for his part in Thursday's altercation at home plate with Senators catcher John Wilson."

The "John Thomas" of whom Sid writes is a pitcher. Tomlin is indeed a New Britain outfielder, and Wilson is the catcher for Harrisburg.

Dear Mr. Adam,

Knock-to-the-jaw or forearm-to-head? BG expects its the latter, a three game suspension seems light for the former.

Curiously,
BG

Well, seeing as how the jaw is part of the head, they could both be right. :-)

Although, as the names of the players prove, and as IcePhoenix pointed out: the smart money is rarely on Sid Hartman.

Here's the Harrisburg Patriot-News' account; no details about forearms, heads, or jaws:

"And, as if the night was not already long enough, the game was delayed four minutes in the top of the ninth when Senators catcher John Wilson and New Britain's James Tomlin were ejected after a brief scuffle at the plate.

"Their differences centered on who was entitled to the plate when Tomlin scored the Cats' final run on a bloop single over the head of shortstop Josh Labandeira, a play that ended with no throw to the plate but with Tomlin and Wilson disagreeing over ownership of it.

"Both benches emptied and a couple of lunges were made, but nothing really happened and certainly nothing changed the outcome."

OT a little bit, but it's kinda quiet today considering you are playing the white sox, maybe a little too quiet.

is the pitcher's name really John Thomas? *giggle*

Hartman and Reusse are terrible, just terrible at names, ages, etc.

Everytime Reusse writes on the Twins, it's usually how horrible Justin Morneau is and sometimes Doc is 25 sometimes 23, sometimes 26.

Sigh, thank goodness for LaVelle and Joe.

Guess who's bitching again?

"Their overall lead now sits at 12 1/2 games, with Cleveland being closer to the top than the Twins. With that gap in mind, Mark Buehrle believes this series is more about business as usual for the White Sox, as opposed to the rivalry.

'I don't know what they are going to say,' said Buehrle, who starts Wednesday's series finale against defending American League Cy Young winner Johan Santana. 'For us, we still want to win two of three or sweep them, but if we don't win the series, it's not going to be the end of the world. We still like our chances.

'Every year, it seems like we've always been close, and every game matters with them. If we lost, we were going to get further out. If we won, we were going to get closer to first. Right now, the bigger series is going to be between us and Cleveland, whenever we play them.'"

*ahem*

"Twins General Manager Terry Molitor and minor league instructor Paul Britian were in Connecticut when Rock Cats outcatcher Jamison Thomalin knocked Pennsylvania centerpitcher John Wilames in the elbow with his jaw."

Working for the Party has it's advantages. ;)

"is the pitcher's name really John Thomas? *giggle*"

Yeah kafumbly...his name is really John Thomas...but he goes by JT. He is this really big football player looking guy...who throws a mean fastball. On top of that...he is a really nice guy!! We loved him when he was down here in Fort Myers playing for the Miracle...well at least I did, he was one of the few who stayed out signing autographs before AND after the game during that season.
