That cloud looks like a right handed power bat to me....
Posted by: TwinsfanCA at July 31, 2005 03:53 PMEver check out the constellation Orion? Look carefully next time you do...he's not a guy taking down a lion or drawing a bow. He's a power hitter digging a fastball from low in the strike zone.
Posted by: agramante at July 31, 2005 03:55 PMI second K-Bro's motion.
Especially after mr. Tiffee left about 3829 runners on base today.
Posted by: IcePhoenix at July 31, 2005 04:00 PMI'm glad it passed quietly based on what I heard. The Rangers were clamoring for Liriano and the Devil Rays wanted Morneau. Forget it. One additional bat wasn't going to make this team into a World Series contender anyways. I'd rather they make no deals instead of a bad one and start figuring out how to dump Mays after the deadline (which they can do, he can still be traded after clearing waivers) and start worrying about next year.

Posted by: CarrieICL at July 31, 2005 04:23 PMDear Mr/Ms Gendo,
While she's quite sad we couldn't get anything done, BG wholeheartedly agrees.
Yours,

I didn't see the point of giving away ANY part of the Twins future to finish above .500. Oh yes, I believe there is a good chance that when the end of September comes we will all be hoping for the team to finish .500.
I'd love to see the Twins dump Boone, bring up Barlett and "let them play, let them play!" They might not make the post season but they might make it to Japan.
Anywho, now we really need the leg in St. Paul to have a special session and aprove the the stadium bill, if not I think there will be some more cost cutting in the Winter. (ie Goodbye Mr. Jones)
Anyway, I'm going to go and think happy thoughts and remember its only a game. And as long as no dumb trades were made we may live to fight another season.
Posted by: caluofmn1991 at July 31, 2005 04:28 PMI am sad - we won 3 games - THREE FREAKING games -
I think we're going to need more then Obi-won to help us out of this - I am slowly losing hope....
sigh......................................................................................
much love

I'm glad. I think this season is a wash, and the best thing to do is keep a hold of the young talent we have and wait for another run.
Posted by: Kurtis at July 31, 2005 04:51 PMI don't see much promise in this season anyhow...especially with Torii going down. I'd rather hold on to the future than mortgage it for a slim shot at a playoff berth this season. I keenly await the winter moves.
Posted by: Andrew at July 31, 2005 05:12 PMI'm so sad we played so blahly that I am going to eat my weight in double stuffed oreo cookies -
Posted by: wonder woman at July 31, 2005 05:23 PMI think the part that hurt the most this season was Torii going down. If he hadn't, I bet we have some new Twins.
Nevertheless, if we don't pick up Mays' option, I think we can still keep JJ next year.
Terry Ryan should let Jones go, whether the club can afford him or not.
Also, even if the state gives Pohlad the stadium deal he's demanding, keep in mind that payroll probably won't increase right away. The club has pledged only to carry a "league average" payroll after the new ballpark actually opens.
Posted by: frightwig at July 31, 2005 06:31 PMI feel let down by the team I love so dearly.
All this talk from the powers that be about opening up the pocket book a little, to find what...nothing.
Mullholand, Boone, Mays, Romero, Lohse...nothing was moved. We have the same hitting coach that's been through the entire hitting fiasco.
So to whom it may concern...FIX THE TEAM. Start with the hitting coach. Who knows how much of it is him, but at this point it's obvious something is wrong. Getting a new opinion from somebody outside the organization WILL help.
With the trade deadline come and gone...we're now looking at yet another offseason of losing talent and gaining DRAFT PICKS in return.
Stop talking about "selling the farm" and "dumping our future." We've put up with that for 5 years now, I think it's fair to see all this "future" talk start paying off.
You want US to help build a stadium? How about YOU start showing you're willing to expand payroll to keep the good players and make efforts to bring in NEW talented players to fill the gap (that hole at second base is getting mighty big, along with those so called relievers Romero and Mullholand)
I'm sorry for the negativity...but I've stayed as faithful as I can to this team through this trying year. And now with the dealine gone and NOTHING changed...I can't help but feel I've been slapped across the face in return.
Thanks for nothing,
Torhu
Dear Mr. Wig,
But I heard Sid Hartman on the radio this morning say that if we'd only build a new stadium, Carl Polhad would go out and get us Jim Thome! Surely you don't mean we're not going to go out and get Jim Thome? Sid says we'll get our hearts desires! Also, that Pohlad will buy me a pony!
Sacrastically yours,
BG
"League Average" would be around 72-73 million. If you actually add up and average out the 30 team salaries.
The extra 20 million (wherever they'd get it from) would us some where alongside Detroit and ChiSox with the 14th highest payroll or thereabouts.
I'm guessing that's not going to be all at once.
And I really could care less about a stadium, since the team this year appears to have shown me that they really don't feel the need to reach into the pocketbook as much as they lead us to beleive earlier this month.
It's time to either concede the division and start prepping the younger guys for play next year, or to try and make some moves via waivers.
But we've got some HUGE free agents that'll leave at the end of the year, bringing with them nothing but Draft Picks, which more or less wouldn't pay out for another 5-6 years.
I guess that future they've been promising us has gotten pushed back...again.
Posted by: Torhu at July 31, 2005 07:09 PMTorhu, I wholeheartedly agree with you. We really need to evaluate the job Molitor did as a hitting coach this year. He was a great ballplayer but I just dont think he's getting the job done. This is a team built on spraying the ball all around the field for 6 or 7 hits in an inning and 4 runs, not a power hitting team that wants to hit 4 or 5 homers to win the game. Let morneau develop at his own pace and become a legit power threat in time, but for now we should be playing smallball and working the basepaths. We were winning left and right when we stole bases and used the hit and run. The reason the bitch sox are winning so much this year is they are running well on the basepaths and getting into scoring position while also knocking the pitcher off his game. We need speed next year.
Posted by: TwinsInBoston at July 31, 2005 07:35 PMScott Ulger is the hitting coach. And he's reportedly banging his head against a wall over this whole thing (can't say I blame him).
I didn't care for the rumors that we might trade for an outfielder since Torii's gonna be out for a while-- that's crazy talk. We need something other than an outfielder.
And nobody better trade Jacque, dangit. Not unless we get a ton for him and even then I'd be sad.
Torhu, Im sad too...but man, you sound like a toy left on the Misfit Island at Christmass.
Posted by: twinsluvver at July 31, 2005 08:02 PMBatgirl - Actually, Pohlad said he'd buy "the" Ponies, my high-school basketball team which was pretty dominant for a while. We didn't have a baseball team, but take out that "k" and "t" and we're set.
The season's not over and we still have a shot, of course, but it's a long one. I said a couple days ago to a co-worker that right now at the least I want to see us finish over .500. With or without Torii we can do that. Even if we're still eliminated there's pride to play for after that. Let's go guys, play hard until at least October 2nd.
Posted by: Skorch at July 31, 2005 08:10 PMMolitor is not the problem but he might be part of the solution. Maybe he should be considered to be the new hitting coach. I don't agree witht the idea that the hitting coach can be blames for the offense the Twins have (at least not completely) but if Uggs has to go then so be it.
I hope next season they let Mays go and allow Baker a chance to be in the rotation. I would say the same with Loshe but who would take his place? Durbin? Keep JJ and let JC go.
As for the stadium issue, kind of off topic, I'll say this. I have so many fond memories of the Dome that I don't need to see it go. There are so many people who bash it but aren't willing to do anything to get a new place built. How many times have the Twins tried to get a stadium built and everytime its shot down. Some people have such venom at the Twins building a new stadium but I bet many them complain about the Dome. I have a HUGE pet peeve, if you have a problem, do something about, don't just sit there and complain.
Hey Dome haters, if you hate watching games at the Dome then, organize and work with the team and politicians to get a new stadium built.....
WOW! that was theraputic. I think this season is getting to me.
I'll always be a Minnesota Twins fan. This season is turning out to be a stinker but oh well. If I could be a fan through the mid and late 90's I'll remain a fan through this. Success will come again but I bet it will come from within, it seems with the Twins, that's just how it has to be done.
Posted by: caluofmn1991 at July 31, 2005 08:16 PMAs sad as it is to admit, yes, I agree that this season is over. Anyone with a quarter of a brain can see that the current lineup isn't going to advance to the Series even if, by some miracle, they make the playoffs.
But that being the case, I'd like to have seen them play the role of "sellers" instead of buyers before the deadline and unload someone like Jones in return for someone who might help in '06 or even '07.
Posted by: Adam at July 31, 2005 08:34 PMJones is a huge chunk of our offense this year. Offense is where we're lacking. Let a few of the lesser arms go, first. For the money, JJ is an important filler bat, if not the power bat we were hoping to acquire.
Hey, I was objective! Now back to my regularly scheduled "JJ trade" rant: No! NONONONO! Never, no, no, noooooo!
Posted by: twink at July 31, 2005 09:05 PM"Torhu, Im sad too...but man, you sound like a toy left on the Misfit Island at Christmass. "
Sorry, I just don't know what to say.
As far as Ulger. Him banging his head against the wall is part of the reason we'd be better off getting a new guy.
I would guess (hopefully) that Ulger has been working with the guys. But at this point, he just can't put his finger on it. Kinda like how if you start staring at something for too long, it all becomes a blur and you can't think beyond a certain range of ideas.
A new hitting coach brings a new perspective, and perhaps a string of fresh ideas. Bringing him NOW instead of at the beginning of next season ensures he gets the rest of the season to work with the team while in a competitive atmosphere.
At worst, he doesn't solve our problems 100%, but at least then he'd haev a head start going into Spring Training and the 06 Season.
Posted by: Torhu at July 31, 2005 09:06 PMi think the boys should just step it up.. we don't need anyone else!

First of all....these posts were the most depressing i've ever seen. @nd-have faith is people...not just stats 3rd-I think its more important to keep Jones instead of Mays because of the effect it could have on Torii Hunter....If his best friend on the team is traded...whats gonna make him wanna stay when the time comes...?
Posted by: twins fan 49 at August 1, 2005 01:38 AMOOOOO i forgot one more thing...how is a power hitter going to help us if we can't get any base hits? Stringing base hits together and good baserunning is whats gonna make or break the season. Also for all you who have given up...remeber that we play chicago 13 more times before the season is over!!!! Were not even close to being done yet! 2 more months!! Afterall...we are the comeback kids right?
Posted by: twins fan 49 at August 1, 2005 01:48 AMCould have sworn I heard Molitor was the hitting coach somewhere... What is his position in the Twins Organization? I guess just replace Molitor with Ulger in my previous post.
Posted by: TwinsInBoston at August 1, 2005 06:05 AMLast night I dreamt that I was out at the bar when it was announced that the Twins had traded Kyle Lohse. I don't remember who they traded for, but we were all excited and high-fiving each other. Then my mom called me (still in the dream) and told me Romero had been traded too, and we all started celebrating again.
Then I woke up and realized it was just a dream and I was sad.
ndtf - I'd be so happy if I woke up and realized my mom didn't call me at a bar.
Posted by: insider at August 1, 2005 08:02 AMNormally I'd be happy about it too, but if she called to tell me there had been a trade, I would have been ok with it.
Posted by: ndtf at August 1, 2005 08:14 AMI'm with Adam - we should have been selling off the players that we know we can't keep past the off-season to teams that are still in the hunt.
But nothing is better than trading for a player who would only be here a couple of months and probably wouldn't be able to live up to the expectations.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection...the lovers, the dreamers, and me.
Posted by: She-Ra, P.O.P. at August 1, 2005 08:37 AMTwins fan 49...looking back at the last few games (especially in New York and Boston) a significant power-bat would've done wonders.
All of those wasted innings where we left the bases loaded...a significant power bat would've bashed at least a few of those guys in. And with the way those games ended up, those "Few" runs could've been the difference.
Posted by: Torhu at August 1, 2005 09:16 AMndtf,
Haplo and I share your sentiments. What a glorious dream that must have been. Romero AND Lohse off the team? It's like watching Rivas get on a plane to Rochester... and stay there.
Posted by: Chris at August 1, 2005 10:15 AMOr Rivas getting on a plane to Rochester, and then have that plane crash in the mountains where Rivas is forced to live the rest of his life...feeding off the remains of his fellow passengers, Romero and Lohse.
"If I die. I want you to eat me."
...Man that was an eerie movie.
Posted by: Torhu at August 1, 2005 10:20 AMChris-
Like I said, we were all cheering and high-fiving. Then I woke up, realized the trade deadline had passed, and I was very sad.
I know this is off topic, but Raffy Palmeiro got suspended today for steroids.

Posted by: metsfan at August 1, 2005 11:33 AMBe thankful, your Twins are not the Padres.
My friend is a big Twins fan and for years our dream is to have our teams meet up in the World Series and we both thought this year's chance is the best.
Who knew both teams would have trouble scoring runs.
OK, we are still in first place....but with sub .500 record...after a 22-6 May. Yup, the Padres, my team, are that bad.
At this point, I'm still hopeful the Twins are going to make the playoff as a wild card and based on recent history of WS, the wild card is the way to win it all.
Yeah, I was shocked with Torii getting hurt.
Still, I'm crossing my fingers for my friend and all of you, Twinites.
i think it was kind of cruel what they did to the fans. i mean all this talk about oh we are going to get that right-handed power bat and such, and what do they do?? frist of all they get Boone, thinking he might solve our problems, yeah that worked! then they don't do anything at the trade deadline when they really need a right handed bat after Torii's little tummble. all i can say is that they set us up for a heart break. and it really was quite cruel. but the fact that they have confindence in what they do have is quite inspirational
Paul Molitor is the Base running coordinator for the twins minor league teams. He was Hitting Coach for Seattle in the 2004 season. In my opinion the Twins organization should seriously consider puttng Mr Molitor back in the dugout as bench coach or even field manager.
