Torii, recover quicklii.
Posted by: jekyll at July 30, 2005 11:13 AMI was at the game. For the record, HoSox fans live up to their stereotype. I had to call security. More on this later, BatGirl.
Posted by: Janine at July 30, 2005 11:14 AMThe look on his face totally breaks my heart. What are we gonna do without the heart and soul of our team?!
Get better soon, Torii. I miss you already!
Posted by: Meghan at July 30, 2005 11:43 AMHe may not be able to play, but players who are out with injury are still able to stay with the club aren't they?
Posted by: Torhu at July 30, 2005 11:50 AMAnd by "out with injury", I mean like a few days or so.
Posted by: Torhu at July 30, 2005 11:50 AMI almost died when I saw that...
Posted by: Renae at July 30, 2005 12:03 PMJanine,
What's the stereotype. What happened? I need to know. WHAT HAPPENED!!!!???!!!???
Posted by: Brundlefly at July 30, 2005 12:04 PMthis will sound dumb to some, but i think that the team rallying around this to try and "pick Torii up" will get the team together and get us going on the right track. ChiSox 11 game lead be damned! we will be cutting into that swiftly and severely, starting tonight.
IMO.
FWIW, every Sox fan I was watching that game with winced horribly when Torii went down too.
That triangle out there has been death for centerfielders this year.
Posted by: Boston Fan in Michigan at July 30, 2005 12:18 PMHonestly, even though I'm a Tribe fan and this helps us, I hated to see this last night. Torii is one of my favourite players in the league to watch and this is really unfortunate.
Posted by: tim in tampa at July 30, 2005 12:35 PMThat just...wow. Of all people :( GET WELL TORII!
Posted by: Sam at July 30, 2005 12:40 PMAs a Sox fan, I "hate" Torii Hunter. Of course, he could play for my team any day. Last night was unfortunate. Even though the division is pretty much wrapped up, it won't feel the same knowing the Twins are short-handed. Hopefully he will heal completely and be back on the field as quickly as possible.
Posted by: Tim at July 30, 2005 12:58 PMAnyone believe in karma???
Posted by: Jamie Burke at July 30, 2005 01:00 PMDear Mr. Burke,
Quit your whining and grow a pair.
Love,
Batgirl
Dear Torii,
Please, please heal quickly and come back to play soon. We miss you.

Posted by: k-bro at July 30, 2005 01:31 PMRed Sox fan here -- I've been enjoying BG for a while now but never posted. Torii is widely acknowledged to be the man, and the crowd at the Boston bar I was in made "ouch faces" right along with him. I hope the Twins can rally around this like TeeNutts suggested and that Torii makes a triumphant return to close the gap on the White Sox.
And hey, if last October taught us anything, it's that doctors can do wonders for busted ankles these days ...
Posted by: drewbacca at July 30, 2005 01:38 PMDespite the fact that I'm a mere Boston fan with no control over any outcomes in the game...I feel obscurely guilty that this happened in our park. The Boston announcers said this about Torii: "Torii Hunter, one of the great players in the game." And Big Papi looked really shaken as well. (Also, I'd dearly appreciate it if we could go the rest of the season without requring stretchers for the players.) All the best to Torii and the Twins, and I hope he gets well quickly.
Posted by: Casilda at July 30, 2005 01:54 PMI saw Ortiz standing on second, and he looked crushed. It's good to see that despite everything, Ortiz remains a Twin-at-heart :)
Posted by: Torhu at July 30, 2005 02:54 PMI gotta say guys although i am a White Sox fan and Tori Hunter has not been one of my favorite players in the past that this is and unfortunate event that you never want to see happen. Hunter pretty much has embodied the Twin spirit the past few years and it will surely take a litte fire out of our rivalry for the rest of the season. We lost Big Frank, you lost Tori... not a good week for the top dogs of the AL Central
Posted by: Marky Mark at July 30, 2005 03:23 PMThis was the first thing I saw when checking scores last night, and I must say I nearly burst into tears.
There is one good thing to come of this, though: perhaps it will give Denard Span a chance to play in the bigs. He's been tearing up AA like nobody's business.
Posted by: annun at July 30, 2005 04:01 PMBrundlefly,
Worst sportsmanship in baseball. Hands down. All game long, I was being harrassed, left and right, by people yelling things like, "you cant even SPELL Minnesota, dumb girl," which is to be expected. But I draw the line when, for 5 innings straight, 4 Red Sox fans a few rows behind me yell sexually lewd comments and demand that I flash them. No matter how deliberately I ignored them, they wouldnt give up. They weren't even watching the game! I did my best to keep my cool, but eventually my boyfriend and his cousin (coincidentally a very nice, polite Red Sox fan in his own right) went to get security.
Now that they have won the World Series, they can't complain about a curse anymore, they certainly can't complain about being the "underdogs" with their $123 million, they can't come to grips that even their own TEAMMATES want out and their pitchers are dropping like flies, so they have nothing better to do than to harrass their innocent, friendly competition.
Its really quite sad.
Dear Ms. Janine,
That is truly awful. I'm glad your escorts acted. We have a number of wonderful Red Sox fans that frequent this site who I'm sure will be equally horrified. I must admit I was impressed with the fans' reaction to Torii's injury yesterday, so I sincerely hope what you experienced was terrible exception, rather than rule. Drunk guys at baseball games are no fun at all.
Sympathetically,
BG
Torii:( What a blow.
Get better soon, Sweetcheeks:(
It was SO sad to see how upset David Ortiz looked. Looked like he just wanted to go out there and see how Torii was doing.
p.s. Batgirl must admit she still hasn't forgiven the crowd at US Bitchular Field for not cheering when Little Nicky Punto was carried off after breaking his collar bone there last year.
Posted by: Batgirl at July 30, 2005 05:16 PMDear Janine,
Growing up I could hear John Kiley playing the Fenway Park organ from my bedroom window. You would have to look very hard indeed to find a bigger Red Sox fan than me. I wasn't there last night, I don't know the people who harrassed you, and still I am ashamed. Please don't think the rest of us are like that.
Thanks,
Phil
"Batgirl must admit she still hasn't forgiven the crowd at US Bitchular Field for not cheering when Little Nicky Punto was carried off after breaking his collar bone there last year."
That's BS. I was at that game and I and much of the rest of the crowd gave a hand to him when he was taken off the field (it was a sell-out game). I was in the far upper deck and while I couldn't tell how badly Punto was hurt, it was obvious he was in serious pain. His whole dive and fall for the blooper looked awkward - much like Nationals' Joey Eischen who got hurt in a similar play this year. Of course nobody knew who Nick Punto was, but people still gave him a warm applause when he walked off. BTW, that was the Torii-Burke collision game, though the injury was in the first inning.
Posted by: Sox at July 30, 2005 07:22 PMDear Mr/Ms Sox,
That could well be. BG only saw it on the TV and heard dead silence from the crowd, but it could have been a mic issue. Thanks, she feels better now.
Yours,
BG
Click my name for an interesting ESPN article. Don't know what you guys think of it.
Posted by: Torhu at July 30, 2005 09:09 PMWell ouch - I was out having fun last night and I came home to this - no good - I'm sending you good Karma Sweetcheeks - be well.
Janine -
I'm sorry that happened to you and BostonPhil is so very right not all fans at Fenway or any park are bad. I was at Fenway last year with my sister - and we were cheering for the Phillies - we got some good natured ribbing -but no-one was mean - I don't know maybe it was because we were smack dab in the middle of some big dudes who were also cheering for the Phillies - but the Fenway Faithful were fun and very kind.
Much Love
Wonder Woman
LaurieNY and I were in the outfield, second row from the top, behind the jumbotron! the fans around us were very cool. one guy, however... "Twins fan? you should root for a winning team!" so I said, "don't be a Yankee fan." he looked SHOCKED, to say the least. "that's what a Yankee fan would say. don't be like them." he was nice the rest of the game.
I mean, seriously. think about it. a "winning team," as he meant it, winning the World Series. from 1919 to 2003, how many World Series did the Red Sox win? how many did the Twins win, and they've only been in existence since 1961.
I love the Red Sox, don't get me wrong. seriously, I love Boston. but don't go all Yankee fan on me over one World Series win, no matter how spectacular it was.
and when Torii went down, Laurie and I couldn't see him, because he was obstructed from view by the bottom couple of rows down there (it happened right in front of our section). all we could see were Gardy and the trainer running out and all the players looking shocked and distraught. I called aurora, and she said the guys on the radio said he hadn't moved. I thought he was unconscious! did he snap his neck? oh my god, is Torii still alive?! we couldn't even see the jumbotron for the replay, because all we could see was "Home of the Boston Red Sox" on the back of it. I was quite relieved when aurora called me back to give me the news that it was "only" his ankle. man. get well soon, dear.
Posted by: kafumbly at July 31, 2005 10:18 AMThat's the second most horrifying thing ive ever seen happen to Torii. First place still goes to when he ran into the post behind the wall in CF of the Dome last year at full speed. He came back pretty quickly from that one though so Im hoping that he will get healed up soon and still have no fear out there.
On a similar note, I'll be at the game today (sunday). Any suggestions for a 'Circle me Bert' sign? I think im gonna have the campaign shirt from last year on, though it would have been better if JKS was pitching.
Posted by: TwinsInBoston at July 31, 2005 10:25 AMAnother red sox fan chiming in. Janine, I am also apalled at the harrassment you went through. It is very much the exception to the rule. I hope you don't condemn our team on the basis of a few boorish "fans".
Dear Batgirl;
You write one of the most entertaning and enjoyable blogs I've had the privelege to read.
Posted by: scottymac at July 31, 2005 12:30 PMI'm an A's fan here in Nebraska, and I have to say that I'm saddened that I won't be able to see Torii play in the upcoming series. As a midwesterner, I have no hard feelings about the Twins, even after that ALDS vs Oakland a couple years back. Torii is one of the good guys of the game, and I hope he has a speedy recovery.
Also, I've been lurking around this wonderful blog for over a year now... I have to say, great writing, BG, props to you. Very entertaining and positive. Plus, the Lego sagas are hilarious.
Good luck with the upcoming A's-Twins series, but not too much luck, I am still an A's fan... ;)
Posted by: Ryan in Nebraska at July 31, 2005 06:04 PMMy guess is that Janine was sitting in right field. That's where the drunk, stupid sox fans tend to be, the ones who chant Yankees Suck during games against the Devil Rays. I also wish Batgirl was a Red Sox fan instead.
Posted by: Greg at July 31, 2005 08:37 PMNope- I was right behind home plate- about 20 rows up.
