Uh, Really? Are You Sure?

Latest trade scuttlebutt has the Twins involved in a three way with Boston and Florida, getting Mueller for Mays and Romero. That seems a mite excessive to Batgirl. Here's the article from the Boston Globe. (Thanks to Carrie IC for the heads-up)

EDIT Here's more from the Boston Herald. Are the Twins trying to get Mueller and Millar? Please note that one article says the Twins are not willing to part with Lohse but rather Mays, and another says they'd rather deal Lohse, so, you know, take them for what they're worth.

I heard the deal included prospects as well. That might even things up a little better for us.

I'm telling you, check Terry Ryan's mirror for hypnotic devices. That happened on Days of our Lives once.

Posted by: CarrieICL at July 21, 2005 11:42 AM

Thanks to the good folks at DTFC, I also got a link to this story out of Boston , which has JC and Mays going to the RSox for Meuller and Millar. Now what kind of sense does that make? I'd rather have Mueller and the prospects. (If they're decent ones.) Or Mays and JC, for that matter.

Posted by: hrunting at July 21, 2005 11:43 AM

Ooops. Anyway, there is such a story.

Posted by: hrunting at July 21, 2005 11:45 AM

Dear Ms. Beth,

Those better be some fine prospects.

Skeptically,
BG

Posted by: Batgirl at July 21, 2005 12:09 PM

I wouldn't mind it too much if we got their stud SS prospect Ramirez. He's blocked by Renteria in their organization anyway. The Greek God of Walks would be cool too. But just Muellar and Millar? Eh. Smacks of desperation in my opinion. Much rather see something like Muellar and Ramirez or Youkilis.

Posted by: TBird41 at July 21, 2005 12:09 PM

According to what I heard on WCCO radio this morning, the deal which was in the works to trade Romero for Mueller fell through.
It was to be a three way deal between the Twins, Red Sox & Marlins.

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-marnot21jul21,0,4017274.story?coll=sfla-sports-headlines

"In that scenario, the Marlins would have received pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Joe Mays. Bill Mueller and prospects would have gone to the Twins, and the Red Sox were set to get Lowell, Burnett and J.C. Romero.

According to one American League source, by early evening the deal looked like it was dead. The Sox aren't keen on taking Lowell, and the Marlins aren't crazy about Mays."

Posted by: bubblemint at July 21, 2005 12:16 PM

just stop talking to the Red Sox - all ready - someone else must have a better deal for us - who I don't know but this is insane.

Everyone really has gone mad - it is the full moon MOJO- or who sacrificed the poor chicken??
or.........
Can't we just put Chili Davis into a time machine and get him back?? My favourite signs of all time seen at the Dome - "Our Chili gives us Runs"

Posted by: Wonder Woman at July 21, 2005 12:17 PM

I do not want Kevin Millar anywhere near my team.

And what about lefty pitching? What are we going to do about that if we got rid of Romero?

Stupid trade deadline....

Posted by: Candace at July 21, 2005 12:42 PM

"Most curious about Mays is his low strikeout-per-nine-innings average of 3.34."

Well duh - he's a ground ball out pitcher- and you call yourself a baseball writer -

Sorry batgirl - I'm quite ornery today -
ohh happiness - Greg Maddux only needs 3 more strike outs for 3000

Posted by: Wonder Woman at July 21, 2005 12:44 PM

Either Ramirez or Youkilis would be solid, solid pick-ups. They don't give us what we need at ALL, but they would be solid pickups for the future. Besides, if it's a choice between Hinske, Hillenbrand, Mueller, and Huff.....I choose Cuddyer. Potential has to mean something at that point.

I say we trade Romero for Ramirez and start looking for someone to take Jacque for a more solid 3B. Ford can play outfield, Ryan can play outfield, and that Kubel guy isn't too bad either (once we make it to next year). Besides, Jacque's trade value has never been higher.

Please don't kill me, batgirl.

Posted by: Drew at July 21, 2005 12:58 PM

As a Red Sox fan, you can have Millar for nothing. Just get him out of my sight.

BTW, I loved your post on Bret Boone as savior that got picked up by Page 2. (That's how I heard of your blog.) I live in the Pacific Northwest now, so I'm stuck with the Mariners as my home team, and that was just the best.

Posted by: JNW at July 21, 2005 01:40 PM

We are not trading Jacque! (Sorry, I'm just so tired of him being mentioned whenever trade talks come up). Jacque has 40 walks (or more? did he walk yesterday?) this season to lead the Twins. And, well, he's Jacque. I mean, he rescued BatGirl from a hole and everything!

At this point I don't want to lose Mays or Lohse either (and I never thought I'd say the latter). It's so wonderful having good pitching (after all those years when the Twins weak spot was pitching).

Posted by: Laurel at July 21, 2005 01:45 PM

Anywya we can work out a deal for any of your pitchers for Kevin Brown ? We will even take OMM back or even the guy on the juice.

Please

Posted by: mike at July 21, 2005 01:48 PM

Dear Mr. Mike,

It didn't work last week, and it's not going to work this week.

Sternly,
BG

Posted by: Batgirl at July 21, 2005 01:50 PM

Dear Mike,

I'll trade you Kevin Brown for Sidney Ponson.

At least Brown goes on the DL sometimes.

Depressedly,
CarrieICL

Posted by: CarrieICL at July 21, 2005 01:53 PM

bubblemint...that deal looks like the one that we pulled last year...with us giving up a LOT for nothing.

Yeah we'd get prospects, but we need the help this year moreso than next.

Losing Romero AND Mays...and only getting back ONE Major Leaguer...uhuh...bad deal.

Posted by: Torhu at July 21, 2005 01:53 PM

Kevin is a cuddley kind of guy, big hearted and bad back-ed. I think he would fit in nicely, we will even pay the rest of his salery for this year, What if we throw in Tony Womack ?

Posted by: mike at July 21, 2005 01:54 PM

I'd take Fat ass Sidney over Kevin Brown at this point. I might even take Jose Lima or Eric Milton.

Posted by: mike at July 21, 2005 01:56 PM

"I think he would fit in nicely, we will even pay the rest of his salery for this year"

Done. But you have to take Sidney's salary too.

And you can keep Tony Womack.

Posted by: CarrieICL at July 21, 2005 02:08 PM

No, I totally agree that Jacque is having a good year. He did save Bat-girl from the hole, too...the problem, though, is that in the interests of keeping bat-girl out of that nasty hole, Jacque may have to go.

His productivity just means that he's going to be traded for a higher value player next year when Kubel is ready to play full time (I doubt we'd discard Ford and there's no way that we go into the year with 5 OFs)...so why not trade him now when his value is so high?

I feel like we might be able to get a 3B who can actually make an impact if we bite the bullet, make the hard decision, and trade Jones. What if we got someone like Hank Blalock (not that we'd get him...but someone of that caliber)!?! It's now or later and I choose now.

Posted by: Drew at July 21, 2005 02:16 PM

The past couple of days have only reinforced how much we need Jacuqe Jones. He's great defensively (barring his odd bouts with lose-it-in-the-lights-itis this season) and offensively, he's the only reason we're not 1-and-6 for the second half this year.

And excuse me if I don't have much faith Jason Kubel; I know he's supposed to be good and all. But just look what's happened to the rookies we've put in veteran positions this year.

And those trade rumors have GOT to be bunk. TWO pitchers for a single hitter? Mays has been decent this year, if nothing special. And Romero, besides being our only lefty out of the 'pen (besides the Old Man) is -- reluctant as I am to admit it -- pretty darn good as long as you don't give him inherited runners.

It just seems that such a trade would weaken our pitching staff MORE than it strengthens our offense.

Posted by: Salt-Man Z at July 21, 2005 02:38 PM

What would be great would be Mays and Romero for YOUKILIS.

Whoa, I would have to celebrate if they did that. With Baker coming back, it would make sense to dump a starter.

Posted by: Mimiru at July 21, 2005 02:58 PM

I despise Millar more than just about any baseball player. So this would obviously not flow with me.

Posted by: Stacy at July 21, 2005 03:05 PM

Dear Carrie

I would take some used chewing tobacco and a rosin bag for Brown at this point.

Desperately Yours
mike

Posted by: mike at July 21, 2005 03:09 PM

Now, you stop that. We're not giving you used chewing tobacco, and we're certainly not giving you a rosin bag. You'll take Sidney Ponson, or nothing at all, understand?

Posted by: CarrieICL at July 21, 2005 03:13 PM

This is really getting interesting. Last night on BBTN, what's-his-face-with-the-funny-name was absolutely convinced that the Twins would not part with Romero. In fact, he made it really seem like the Twins were done trading for the year. Hmmm.

Posted by: k-bro at July 21, 2005 03:35 PM

Maybe we can trade for someone who actually puts up good numbers this time? Shocking, I know. But i really don't want to give up anyone that is doing well. And maybe we can make a one-night trade for a manager? Gardy's out for the game...

Ah, whaddya know? So he is. Well, that's one more game he can't be ejected from. : )

Click my name for the article.

Posted by: Salt-Man Z at July 21, 2005 04:48 PM

Hmm. I wonder if that means Gardy's going to do another guest spot here tonight? You know, to let Batgirl recover from falling down that once-thought bottomless hole...

Posted by: mk at July 21, 2005 05:37 PM

Sorry to post this here, but since I am cursed with no access to the Cave at work (and thus the game thread), and can only follow the game via Gameday (no a/v, even!) I must make this question:

Radke ejected? In a game he wasn't pitching in? Whothe*what*now?!?

Posted by: mk at July 21, 2005 07:42 PM

mk, the game thread is it http://www.quicktopic.com/31/H/p2u2kyJwTeB.

And yes, Bradke was objected. He apparently told the ump he could fornicate himself after the Tigers were awarded a home run on a ball that was foul.

Posted by: Nick at July 21, 2005 08:04 PM

And by "objected," I of course mean "ejected." Stupid lawyers...

Posted by: Nick at July 21, 2005 08:04 PM

Nick, I can't get past the firewall to get to QuickTopic, so no game thread for me. But thanks for the explanation. It still boggles the mind though. I mean, of all the people to get tossed for telling the ump where he can sling his saddle, Radke?!?

Posted by: mk at July 21, 2005 08:08 PM

We were all stunned, mk. But it was truly beautiful. Plus, Brad doesn't pitch in this series.

Posted by: Nick at July 21, 2005 08:09 PM

I venture forth to humbly beg a Legovision. The fake home run, LNP holding back Scotty, Bradke getting tossed... we were all so confused. It needs Legovision.

Posted by: CarrieICL at July 21, 2005 08:15 PM

This may sound presumptuous, given the Twins already had a five run lead at the time of the "home run", but if the Twins win here, beat the Tigers back into Kittens and proceed to lay waste to the American League en route to catching up with the White Sox, does this mean we can look back at this game and say, yes, this incident was this year's equivalent to the chair?

On a more immediate note, does this mean that Bradke guest-blogs tonight instead of Gardy?

Posted by: mk at July 21, 2005 08:21 PM

But we won...

Posted by: Torhu at July 21, 2005 09:31 PM

Torhu, I'm not saying *everything* between the incidents needs to match up, just that the end result remains the same.

Posted by: mk at July 21, 2005 10:00 PM

Nooooo! Never, no, it can't happen...NOOOOO!

Okay, that's out of the way. I hate trade talks. No Jacque, no Mays, no Romero (if I'm gonna get an ulcer, it should be from someone I like). I won't allow it.

And thanks to RD for the wonderfully appropriate, and rather comforting, bit of Public Enemy.

Posted by: twink at July 22, 2005 01:32 AM

ESPN has the Twins as a possible trade partner for Soriano. I don't know how this could happen. This is probably like the Twins as a possible trade partner for Kenny Rogers (i.e. never going to happen)
But if the front office could work it out (without giving up Santana) it would definitely be worth it.
