Rivas Sent Down

From the Strib:

Luis Rivas, who debuted with the Twins in 2000 and was their starting second baseman for three division championships, was optioned to Class AAA Rochester on Saturday to make room for infielder Michael Cuddyer, who will be activated from the 15-day disabled list today...

..."Somebody had to go down," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I'm sure Luis isn't very happy. He's been here in the big leagues for a long time."He didn't play well early in the year. He had a back injury. He hasn't gotten many at-bats."He needs to go down and play. We don't want to lose him out of this organization."

When Rivas first joined the team, the organization felt it had a long-term answer at second base.Rivas played very well defensively and showed signs of being a functional offensive player. But, for whatever reason, Rivas has regressed in recent years. He doesn't cover as much ground as he once did and doesn't get on base enough to do what he does best: steal bases.

Rivas softly said, "It's just the way everything is," as he packed and left the clubhouse.

Rivas hasn't been able to contribute in some time, and this was certainly the roster move that makes the most sense--but you know what? BG just feels bad for the guy.

Good luck, Luis.

I feel bad for the guy too.
Especially after reading this.

They showed a clip of the Twins clubhouse on UPN 29 during sports - and Luis Rodriguez - was talking to Luis while he was packing and I thought Luis Rodriguez was going to cry - I think he felt bad because he kind of pushed Luis Rivas out of a job - poor thing.

But it is the move that makes the most sense right now and hopefully Luis will get back on track - I personally would have skipped the whole Bret Boone signing and gone right for the big bat that the Twins seem to want/need.

Buena Suerte - Luis

I hate when that happens :-(

I like Rivas but thus certainly was the right move. Rivas has had a lot of time to establish himself as the 2B but he has never really done it. We have to keep the boys with potential up here. Sorry Luis.....but you've done quite well considering......

It's only temporary. There's no doubt in my mind that before long, another infielder will meet up with El Monstruo, and Luis will be back in position. He just needs this time to get himself together. It'll be easier with less pressure.

Don't feel too bad, he's earned about $4,000,000 dollars or so in his career. It's not like we're throwing him out on the street. I'm sure he understands.

I've searched my heart and find no feel-bad for Rivas. He's had far more chances than he's earned and is paid more than he's worth. Maybe in the times of sucking, the heart hardens and you get less sentimental about the players. That being said, cutting Rivas for another under-performer (sorry, Laurie-NY) isn't exactly the spark this team needs.

I feel bad for the guy too but as has been pointed out it makes sense, and he's being overpaid. In fact the more that I think about it the more I'm upset about us overpaying him and not using his salary more productively.

Maybe if we tell the Nationals that Guzman plays much better with Rivas at 2nd they'll send us Vidro. Think they'll go for it?

I feel bad for him, but honestly he hasn't performed. The move I don't understand is signing a clearly de-roided Bret Boone instead of perhaps holding out for Ray Durham or a trade deadline pickup. I know Boone was cheap, but this was a case of getting what you pay for.

It would be easier to not feel bad for him if he hadn't said what he did, in the manner in which he did. Yeah, it's the right move, but that doesn't make it any less sad for me.

I feel bad for him. I remember I loved him when he first came up. It's kind of a hard break.

But this might really be a blessing in disguise. He really needs some at-bats right now, and he's not going to get them here. He needs to get some work in so that, as Carrie said, when someone else goes down, he'll be ready.

Aaron Gleeman must be celebrating.

Now I'm torn after reading that. I don't know whether to watch the O's - Twins game tomorrow night or go to see Rochester play Charlotte and give Rivas a big hug.

Seriously though, I hope this helps him out so he can be an asset once again.

I'm a little shocked that they held onto him for this long.

Time at AAA will be good for Mr. Rivas. He'll get back into the groove of things, and when another injury comes along: BAM!

He'll be back out inexplicably hitting home runs against the Royals (and the Royals only) before we know it.

The guy is a millionaire because some scouts and coaches decided when he was a teenager that he had a potential which he's never actually had to fulfill in order to get rich and Live the Dream for 4.5 years. If anyone in the majors ever "won the lottery," it was Luis Rivas. I don't feel sorry for him.

So the powers that be finally realized that he doesn't belong in the uniform. This should have happened long ago.

It was a great idea. When do we ship Boone out? Are we going to make a serious trade, or settle for third place in the division?

Posted by: al at July 17, 2005 06:51 PM

I feel for Luis. He's a nice guy, and a decent 2nd baseman and nobody makes the turn quicker. But he's been back peddling and so it had to happen. I'm sure he knew it was just a matter of time. I doubt he'll be in the organization long, but may surface and do better somewhere else. Good luck, Luis.

As much as I knew that Rivas had to go, and as much as he annoyed me, I really, really didn't think it would be him. I'd be happier being here complaining about his play than watching him get sent down. I really do feel bad for him. I doubt he did this on purpose. If he did, then he really needs help. And his attitude to the public, at least, is very classy.

Good Riddance. I think I may ask Gleeman if he wants to crack a bottle of the old bubbly, cuz this has been a LONG TIME COMING.

My grade:

Defensively: B+
Offensively: D--

The guy should be lucky they didn't demote him to clubhouse attendant...

I just hope Bret "Rivas Woulda Had That" Boone improves or my sadness will turn to bitterness and I really, really don't like being bitter.

Posted by: Say Rah! at July 18, 2005 08:25 AM

I can't feel bad for Rivas -
He came into the lineup a few years ago with some natural ability and loads of potential and has failed to improve - in fact he has regressed. He's been a AAA ballplayer making MLB $.
Perhaps the move will get him to work hard and learn to develop his potential.

Question - Who will the Twins now use as Johan's stunt double?

Posted by: Hegs at July 18, 2005 09:36 AM

If Rivas isn't a better player at 25 than he was at 20 - and he isn't - then he ought not be clogging up the depth chart with the big club.

Send him down & tell him he needs to pick up his game.

While I wouldn't write him off, I don't think the prognosis is good. Absent deplorable work habits - and those aren't as easy to correct as one might think - if a guy's been up 5 years and he still doesn't get it, chances are he never will.
