“Who can turn the world on with his smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?”
And, for that matter, who can win the coveted B.O.D. with one swing of the bat?
Joe Mays only gave up two runs, Lew Ford was 2-3 with a RBI, but in the top of the 11th with the bases loaded the good doctor strode to the plate, muttered, “nothing is anywhere simply present or absent,” and smacked a base-clearing double.
“Love is all around, no need to waste it!
You can have the town, why don't you take it!
You're gonna make it after all!
You're gonna make it after all!”
...And you’re the Boyfriend of the Day.
Field/Readers 8, Jeb/Lewwww 6, Sooz/ Stewie 5, Goober/Dr. Morneau 5, Batgirl/Joe 2.
Posted by Jeb at May 24, 2005 10:05 PMaw.... Jeb, that was adorable!!! Admirable pronouncement and beautifully presented.
BOD should be truly honored.
Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 24, 2005 10:08 PMI completely agree, I don't think there's much question. Mays did well though and deserves a tip of the cap.
Posted by: Skorch at May 24, 2005 10:09 PMJeb... *sniff* ... truly beautiful.
Posted by: kafumbly at May 24, 2005 10:18 PMCongrats to Morneau. That double was GREAT!
Before it's too late, and while I have gameday up...go to the Washington/Cinncinati game.
14 innings. Check out the lineup and benches.
Posted by: Torhu at May 24, 2005 10:28 PMwow, do the Nats have anyone left on their bench? they couldn't possibly.
Posted by: kafumbly at May 24, 2005 10:31 PMWell, it just ended. Pitcher knocked in the winning run. Got himself the win ;)
Posted by: Torhu at May 24, 2005 10:33 PMoh, wow... Guzie is batting .188
Posted by: kafumbly at May 24, 2005 10:34 PMKeisler: "when you want things done right..."
Posted by: kafumbly at May 24, 2005 10:35 PMWith the new pronounciation of his last name, I must wonder if seeing this song used in his B.O.D. posting might prompt him to want to change his middle name to "Tyler"...
Posted by: bubblemint at May 24, 2005 10:37 PMI need some kind of legend to decifer this mysterious BOD tallying. What sense should I make out of this: Field/Readers 8, Jeb/Lewwww 6, Sooz/ Stewie 5, Goober/Dr. Morneau 5, Batgirl/Joe 2.
Some of those names and players are discernable, but by no means all. Little help.
Posted by: ss at May 24, 2005 10:57 PMDear Mr/Ms S,
Please click where it says "Boyfriend of the Day" and all shall be explained.
Helpfully,
Batgirl
okay, I'm laughing hysterically... on Sports Center, they just showed bits of the O's game, and the two nuns... hahahaha... holy crap...
Posted by: kafumbly at May 24, 2005 11:06 PMYay for the good Doctor!
Posted by: Goldie at May 24, 2005 11:08 PMOkay, so when the doc hit his double, I was sitting on my knees. I jumped up and got a huge rugburn that tore open. But it was SO worth it. Good Doctor can fix it.
Posted by: Stacy at May 24, 2005 11:17 PMLooks like the Sox aren't content with being runner up...extra innings out in Anaheim.
Posted by: Torhu at May 24, 2005 11:32 PMugh, stupid Sports Center. blah blah blah Barry Bonds.
Posted by: kafumbly at May 24, 2005 11:40 PMEven when not playing...he gets more press than us.
Posted by: Torhu at May 24, 2005 11:42 PMHoly COW the Yanks beat up on Detroit. Six homeruns or so in one game...and nobody is suspicous of this?
But oh GEEZ...a pitcher starts striking people out and it's an OBVIOUS sign of drug use.
*sigh*

hooray for the Doctor!
Posted by: kafumbly at May 25, 2005 12:00 AMYes. Let's rejoice for the wonder of tonight's game. And the promise for future games.
Morneau's getting back in shape, the new lineup seemed to work. Hunter...did a few good things offensively...but had a GREAT defensive night.
Posted by: Torhu at May 25, 2005 12:02 AMDear Dr. MORneau:
Sorry I've been mispronouncing your last name all this time. You should have told me sooner. I know how you feel about people screwing up your last name though. My old high school teachers still screw up my last name after a combined 9 years of my sister and I being in their classes and my mom being a substitute.
Wee Sister and I always try to pick Starz of the Game (the goal is to match up with Dan Gladden). I had them all guesses, what with JoeM's performance and Lewww's performance. In the 11th, I had to re-write my entire list!
I don't understand why The Doctor waited so long to tell us the proper pronunciation of his last name. Then again, no one could mispronounce any of my names, so I'm completely out of my realm of understanding here.
Posted by: Just Beth at May 25, 2005 08:22 AMBeth-
It sucks to have the last name mispronounced. The one good thing is you always know when it's a telemarketer on the phone because they don't even try to pronounce the last name. They just kind of mumble something, getting the consonants right, but completely ignoring the vowels. What's really funny is that I had a college professor who always called me Rochelle (instead of Rachel) but always got my last name right. Go figure.
Maybe the Doctor has been telling people about the proper pronounciation all along, they just never listened. He's just become more insistant.
As someone who's name is constantly misspelled, I know from where he comes.
Posted by: heraldguy at May 25, 2005 09:05 AMAs I heard from Book 'em Dano and Gordo, since he doesn't usually listen to broadcasts, he didn't know they were mispronouncing it, until someone told him. Glad Hands still says it incorrectly. I believe it was double-a who set me straight a while ago that it was MORneau, however, I still find myself slipping every now and again and saying MorNEAU.
They should also change the pronunciation "key" on JustIncredible's page on ESPN.
Side note to the Doctor. Excellent work! I hope this pulls you up a little bit and you start smacking the ball around a little better. I have complete faith in you to do this for yourself, the team, me, and for my fantasy baseball team, we all need you!
Posted by: HooliganKat at May 25, 2005 09:06 AMJust Beth, sometimes it feels rude to correct people. it depends on the situation. if you don't have a chance to correct people right away, then it's a battle to find the right time to say something, because you don't want to sound impolite.
Posted by: kafumbly at May 25, 2005 09:06 AMGood work, Justin.
It was funny, cuz right as he was coming to the plate, Dick referred to him as the "clean-up hitter". My younger son didn't know what that meant, so I explained the whole thing about the previous batters "set the table" and Justin has to get a hit to score them and clear the bases. So my son yelled to the tv, "Justin, clear the table." And he did.
k-bro
Posted by: k-bro at May 25, 2005 09:25 AMI ...er..uh...WE LOVE YOU Justin!
I am guessing that he was just to nice, or to shy to correct anyone. I can totally see that. And I am still struggeling to change!
Posted by: Mic at May 25, 2005 09:40 AMI, too, remember reading on Batgirl long ago that the correct pronunciation was MOR-neau. I believe it was because everyone was griping that Jon Miller was mispronouncing his name, so that must have been way back during home opener weekend. Some well-informed Batling set the record straight (and defended poor Miller, who always gets a bad rap because he is generally the only person pronouncing people's names CORRECTLY).
Posted by: Word Smith at May 25, 2005 12:26 PMJeb -
nice job on the BOD -
In honor of JUS-tin MORE-no, over the lunch hour, I went out on the Mall in front of the Department Store Formerly Known as Daytons and threw my hat up in the air.
no.. it was actually last season when we discussed the proper way to pronounce Justin's name - during that HORRIBLE post-season series where we all had to listen to the announcers who were getting ALL the names wrong..
and then we were told that actually, they were saying Morneau the way he preferred, it was US who were saying it wrong...
Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 25, 2005 02:03 PMthere was something terribly wrong with the grammar in that last sentence but I'm too tired to care..
remember Guz-MAAAAN??!?!?!?! I still get peeved thinking about all that.
Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 25, 2005 02:05 PMCB-
The sister and I still make jokes about the horrible job those announcers did. At one point during that series we muted the TV and cranked up the radio, even though we were watching the games on satellite and the radio was a full 5 seconds ahead.
I did the same thing NDTF... but since I was watching on Cable - my feed was simultaneous.. but I just couldn't handle them anymore, they were so bad.
Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 25, 2005 02:36 PMI think the best were the announcers, (I don't remember where it was ) who called El Presidente' Joanne.
Posted by: aurora at May 25, 2005 02:40 PMAurora - That was last year against at Anaheim I believe. Batgirl was near to tearing her hair out in frustration during the recap of the game. It's in the archives somewhere.
Posted by: Skorch at May 25, 2005 03:51 PMI have since realized that many of us categorize FAAAAAR too much information into these little brains of ours. *laugh*
Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 25, 2005 04:27 PMBut, see, that's exactly what I mean -- it's Jon Miller who says GuzMAAN -- and I can't speak for Cristian -- but the guy I work with who has that last name pronounces it precisely that way. So, who are we going to trust, Mr. Miller and my Mr. Guzman, or John Gordon and Bert Blyleven? I know who my money is on.
Now, the Fox announcers, that's a totally different story.
