Great performances by starters five, four, and three--let's see what number 1 can do!

Radke keeps the streak of good pitching going, giving up only 1 run.

Posted by: Jeb at May 21, 2005 05:55 PM

Where is everyone?

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 05:55 PM

Anyone else having trouble with MLB.tv?

Posted by: Megawatt at May 21, 2005 05:58 PM

Alright.. I think I even get to sit and follow a game for a bit. I'm very excited!

Go BRADKE!!

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 06:03 PM

I was at the Sox-Cubs game today. Seats behind home plate!! Great fun!!! When are you guys going to be good a little baseball team and lose ten (or more!!)in a row????

Posted by: ItsAllGood at May 21, 2005 06:12 PM

AAARGH. FIRST INNING!!!!

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 06:17 PM

Hey all! Totally bummed to have the yawnfest that is the Brewers booth team tonight instead of Bert and Dick. :-(

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 06:24 PM

Hey Laurie! Long time....

Nice Mets game today, eh?

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 06:25 PM

Hey Brian! I didn't see it. I am mad at my fellow Met fans and am boycotting this series. Gave away my ticket for tomorrow's game.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 06:26 PM

...sigh. This is just what Bradke DIDN'T want to do after the three great starts in a row.

He's supposed to be the ACE!

Posted by: Torhu at May 21, 2005 06:27 PM

He'll be fine, Torhu. Fret not. :-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 06:28 PM

Not pretty.

Posted by: Cliffjumper at May 21, 2005 06:37 PM

DARN!

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 06:39 PM

Brad probably should have let the Jackal start again tonight, as he quipped.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 06:40 PM

Please no ASS bats

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 06:41 PM

Laurie -

Why you mad at the Mets fans?

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 06:42 PM

Definitely time to wake up the bats, guys. But PLEASE, don't load the bases! The kiss of death!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 06:43 PM

JJ needs to find his April touch.

Posted by: Cliffjumper at May 21, 2005 06:43 PM

This not right

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 06:44 PM

Brian, I'm tired of the disrespect and disloyalty they show their own players. Last night's treatment of Kaz Matsui was disgraceful. Especially when the freaking Yankees are in the house, you don't boo your own players. I've just hit my limit with their neanderthal behavior.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 06:46 PM

OK, this is starting to suck.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 06:47 PM

CLee owns Bradke.

Posted by: cliffjumper at May 21, 2005 06:48 PM

I'm mad at FSN North for showing Arena Football instead of the Twins.

I am also mad at the Cubs for being so damn hapless and letting the BitchSox own them.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 06:49 PM

Speaking of the Cubs. Why on earth wasn't LaTroy out there to start the 8th with the Cubs leading 1-0?

Posted by: Cliffjumper at May 21, 2005 06:51 PM

Fran, you have no TV coverage? How crazy that I can watch the Twins in New York City, but you can't. But maybe it's good that you can't see this...

I'm mad at the Cubs too.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 06:53 PM

This Milwaukee announcer reminds me of Joe Buck. Ugh.

Posted by: Mark at May 21, 2005 06:54 PM

Nope, no TV in the Twins market. I suppose they want to get a few more people to the dome for at least one game of this big rivalry. I'm six hours away though, so it kind of sucks. Shouldn't complain, I guess. Before 1995, we got maybe 20 games a year on TV out here, now it is more like 130.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 06:58 PM

Yeah... the one evening I have free to pay attention to the game and I have to sit and watch it on Gameday instead of getting to see it on TV.. *SIGH*

It's just not fair.

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 06:59 PM

B-Sox are putting El Duque on the DL. Not sure if that is good news or bad news.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 06:59 PM

Is it just me, or do the Twins look flat tonight?

Posted by: Scotty Dawg at May 21, 2005 07:00 PM

Laurie, I couldn't agree more about booing your own players. And you have to feel bad for Matsui, too.

Grr. Twins DO look flat. Or sound flat, rather. (Through Dazzle and Gordo). Let's go guys!

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 07:04 PM

These boring announcers could make us look flat if we were up by 10. They're putting me to sleep.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:04 PM

LaVelle made it sound like Torii was getting booed last night after his second straight bases-loaded dp.

Posted by: Cliffjumper at May 21, 2005 07:06 PM

Brian, you working tonight? I feel very bad for Kaz, the poor thing. He makes one error and he's the devil to these people (Dougie made one too, BTW). That's the way they are. Didn't even occur to them while they were booing that his double had accounted for the only Mets run at the time. Real fans encourage guys going through a rough patch... they don't make it worse by being abusive.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:08 PM

Time to get the offense going, Davis came in with an ERA of close to 5. Start it off, Lewwwww.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 07:09 PM

Clifjumperf, I think the Twins should avoid loading the bases at all costs... it never comes to any good.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:10 PM

Gee that was some nice typing there. Sorry, Cliffjumper! LOL

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:11 PM

ugly swing from lewww.

Posted by: Mark at May 21, 2005 07:11 PM

They did OK with the bases loaded the other day. I think it's just a Torii thing now.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 07:11 PM

Come on, boyfriend...

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:13 PM

Brewers games used to at least be good for Piggly Wiggly commercials. They don't even have those to amuse me anymore.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:15 PM

Laurie, yeah, I'm at work.
Dougie made an error? MY Dougie? That just doesn't happen. :( And on the day I finally was able to buy my Mets Mientkiewicz jersey T-shirt!
Booing your own team just isn't right. Unless you're a fan of the old-tyme Brooklyn Dodgers. I suppose its ok then, for historical reasons.
We really need to give Matsui a chance to get used to playing 2B! I mean - what would have happened if Twins fans booed Rivas every time HE screwed up???

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 07:17 PM

Been settling for Cleveland and Cincinnati on Extra Innings.

Captain Cheeseburger Sabathia just hit a two-run homer. A blast, just a bit off straightaway CF.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 07:18 PM

If not for the delay, I'd put on the WCCO feed on XM. These guys are killing me.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:18 PM

Ack DP for NBP. They sound just as flat on the radio, Laurie. But at least the radio has Herb.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 07:24 PM

Brian, I don't have a Mets Dougie shirt yet, just two Twins ones. Yes, he made an error. Nearly gave me a heart attack. You know, Met fans take more delight in booing Matsui than Derek Jeter. That disgusts me. Booing Derek Jeter should always take precedence, ESPECIALLY at Shea!

If you're at work, can't you watch the game on MLB.TV? Or do you just prefer the home feed? I tried the home feed on XM before but there's about 30 seconds between the two.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:25 PM

Laurie, I just really prefer the radio, to be honest. Especially at work - its less distracting.

Booing Jeter should take precedence over just about anything.

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 07:28 PM

Brian, you're a man after my own heart... ;-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:28 PM

OMG - did Bradke just WALK somebody???

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 07:29 PM

Isn't that the first sign of the apocalypse?

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:30 PM

This is a sad game to listen to. Especially after the magic that was last night.

...I'm ticked at Radke. Those four runs...tsk tsk (especially when you've got two outs)

You can't depend on him. When we need him most, coming off of THREE GREAT STARTS in a ROW, he goes and does the 1st inning thing again.

And thus, the bats get ticked off. I would be too. Put me down 2-0 before I've even got a chance to swing a bat.

Posted by: Torhu at May 21, 2005 07:31 PM

off topic for you NYers...I am going to be in NYC in two weeks (I live in Boston), and might go see a game at Shea. Anything I should know about the stadium or the area?

Posted by: Mark at May 21, 2005 07:32 PM

Torhu, you've been awfully restrained since the first inning... I've been waiting for that outburst!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:33 PM

yep this is a letdown after last night. Did I hear Crain is warming up?

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 07:34 PM

Mark... take the subway!!! Otherwise you're asking to sit in traffic for hours.

I don't care what anyone says, I think Shea is an awesome place. What game are you going to?

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:35 PM

I don't excuse the assbats just because Brad is having a rough night. All the more reason to rise to the challenge and score when you're down early.

And yes, Crain is warming up, according to Herb.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 07:36 PM

Laurie, they are playing SF that weekend. I normally drive to New Haven and take the commuter rail in so subway it is.

Posted by: Mark at May 21, 2005 07:37 PM

That should be a great weekend. I'm going to at least one of the games. So you're going into Grand Central? You can take the #7 train (John Rocker's favorite) straight to Shea from there. Remember the Sunday game is at 8pm.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:40 PM

Laurie-

Do you have season tix to Shea?

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 07:41 PM

Brian, no. I used to, though. Then for 5 years a good friend of mine played for the Mets and I got free tickets, so I gave up my seasons. They're way too rich for my blood now!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:44 PM

This is definitely one of those nights.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:49 PM

Ahem....played for the Mets?

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 07:49 PM

I know what curiosity did to the cat, but what ex-Met was the friend of Laurie?

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 07:49 PM

These announcers, as they'd say in Jolly Olde England, are getting on my wick.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:50 PM

Ok.. please no one take this as any way against my team because y'all know I love my boys.. but...

I wish I could actually see this game on TV because I have noticed something sitting and watching the stats go by on GameDay.

ummm.. well.. the Brewers' pitcher is HOT. Or at least Davis has a hot mugshot - and NO ONE has a hot mug shot. Just put it down to aesthetic appreciation if you must but.. nummmm...

Anyone out there actually WATCHING the game that can verify whether Davis is officially a cutie?

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 07:51 PM

I thought I had mentioned this before!! Rick Reed is a good friend of mine. Hence the Twins fandom, which has obviously lasted past his tenure.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:52 PM

Babs, you are indeed correct.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:52 PM

Were you a Pirates fan, then, too, Laurie?

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 07:53 PM

Uh, NO, Brian. That little episode killed me. I really wanted him to come back here, though. But his back just gave out.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:55 PM

Does he live here now?

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 07:56 PM

Poor Crainy. Not his night, I guess.

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 07:56 PM

No, Reeder and family are back in Ohio. He's just enjoying being a dad now. Baseball is pretty tough on one's family life! :-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:57 PM

Bases loaded, nobody out. This is lovely.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:57 PM

With Carlos Lee up, too. What could be better?

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 07:58 PM

This game has me a step away from the scream therapy thread at DTFC. C'mon, Jesse.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 07:58 PM

Well it is good to at least be affirmed in the small details one is distracted by when the score isn't nearly as attractive as the players...

*sigh*

I guess now I have TWO reasons to look forward to Twins AB's... *GRIN*

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 07:59 PM

Come on Jesse... no more walks sweety. They Haunt.

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 08:00 PM

I heard WAY too much cheering in the dome on Lee's hit.

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 08:01 PM

Good Lord. This is ugly. As a Met fan who has been too often victimized by Overbay, Jenkins, Lee and Co., I can't believe I'm letting myself in for an extra round of this. I just went through it 2 weeks ago.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:02 PM

And now I am off to scream and then off entirely.

I haven't used the turn the game off and then find out tomorrow the Twins came back and won strategy yet this season.

Later.

Posted by: Franorama at May 21, 2005 08:02 PM

Babs are you a lobbist?

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 08:02 PM

Im starting to think I'm a bad luck charm. The last game I was able to listen to was Santana's start....

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 08:04 PM

OK, Brian... now you're starting to sound like Reeder! LOL!! Baseball players and fans are the most superstitious people in the world.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:05 PM

Nope Mas... I'm Staff at the House of Representatives.

boy, this is an ugly game they give me when I have a free night! I was at the office until after 10:30 last night so I missed that incredible Silva outting. Bradke hon, you owe me the next time. Seriously.

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 08:08 PM

Babs, what a cool job! As a political junkie, I am impressed.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:10 PM

It has its moments Laurie.. I'm also a political junkie. It can also drive you absolutely round the bend - you have to have a bit of the crazies to enjoy working there - which I have.

YEAH!!! THANKS JC!!

I can now breathe somewhat freer.

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 08:12 PM

We have a pretty interesting bunch here.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:14 PM

Carlos you can not do that in our park

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 08:15 PM

That was not cool.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:15 PM

Matt Guerrier has been making his way onto my boyfriend list... so he had better earn his spot here. Good looks alone do not a boyfriend make!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:20 PM

You know what? I am hoping this is not a preview of what is to come tomorrow. I am going tomorrow and if they get whooped on my birthday in front of me, I just may cry.

Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2005 08:26 PM

Yeah we will get to see the new kid, Rodriguez

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 08:26 PM

Good luck to the new kid

Hey I'm going tomorrow too and was thinking the same thing. But I have to believe Santana will have his good stuff back.

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 08:28 PM

Just absolutely not the Twins night.

Posted by: Mark at May 21, 2005 08:29 PM

Does being a West Wing junkie qualify me as a political junkie?

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 08:29 PM

Stacy, make sure you bring a sign, so you can win the lottery tickets on your birthday! :-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:30 PM

Don't cry. Heckle. No crying in baseball.

And Happy Birthday no matter what.

Posted by: Flitcraft at May 21, 2005 08:31 PM

hmm, Brian, I think it's usually the other way around...

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:31 PM

I have seats in the section behind home plate. Is there a possibility of getting circled there?

Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2005 08:31 PM

If it's your birthday, you always have a chance of getting circled!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:33 PM

I'll have to try that, lol.

I am working on pretending to be 14 so I can get my dang Morneau slugger.

Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2005 08:35 PM

You got to bring a few kids with then trade them treats for the bat

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 08:36 PM

I know, the kids get all the good stuff! We grownups have to get it on eBay. Just don't put on any makeup until you get through the gates and grab the goodies! :-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:36 PM

yep.. Doug Davis is still cute. I have always had such a weakness for pitchers. First basemen too but definitely pitchers. *sigh*

I won't even get to see my BF tonight. *sniff* no Joe Nathan for me tonight. *pout*

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 08:42 PM

Perhaps pigtails will do the trick?

Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2005 08:43 PM

Whatever works, Stace!

Well, this night sucked...

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:45 PM

well... that's it then. *SIGH*

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 08:45 PM

Are we gals the only ones left here?

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:46 PM

I'd never be able to pass as a kid. Probably the beard.=)

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 08:46 PM

No gal here

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 08:46 PM

Hey Brian! :-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:47 PM

I passed for 14 a year and a half ago when I was 18 and got a Justin autograph out of it. Yay for Sunday kids days! lol

Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2005 08:47 PM

Hey Laurie :)

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 08:47 PM

Just gals and New Yorkers, then... ;-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:47 PM

You qualify double.

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 08:49 PM

Its nice to see young Twins fans. I always feel as if Baseball is dying out with the younger generation...

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 08:50 PM

I'm just hoping the Red Sox can pull off a miracle comeback tonight against Atlanta. Helps the Mets and hurts the Yankees. A win-win situation.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:51 PM

Anyone else hear the Braves announcers bragging up Dougie? It was beautiful.

Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2005 08:52 PM

Crazy ticket and concession prices make it hard for families to go to games, so kids don't feel as much a part of baseball as they should.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:52 PM

Our Dougie? No, I have the game on the Boston channel.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:53 PM

Yes, our Dougie. They were talking about how much they lost at 1st when they traded him and that Millar will never be the 1st baseman Dougie is. I bowed to them.

Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2005 08:54 PM

Its the 20-somethings you don't see at games all that much, I think. But I suppose the younger kids are dropping off as well.

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 08:54 PM

TIcket prices have been out of control for 10 years, so going to a game became a special event for lots of kids instead of a regular thing. What a shame.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 08:56 PM

Still is for me, sadly. Too darn busy - acting is a tough life.

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 08:57 PM

I just don't have friends who enjoy going to games, so I end up not going rather than go alone. Since Reeder was traded (and of course his wife, who I went to all the games with), I have no regular game partner. It sucks. When I had seasons I could go alone, because I knew everyone in my section and always had people to hang out with.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:00 PM

My brother is an actor. Well, an extra.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:01 PM

I kind of live at the Dome during the summer. I love it...well, not the dome, but you know.

Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2005 09:01 PM

Must be weird watching baseball indoors. I went to Miller Park and Minute Maid Park, but the roof was open.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:02 PM

I do have Met fan friends, of course... but they have regular game partners or are going with someone else when I want to go, or they can't go for some reason when I can, etc.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:04 PM

The only thing I miss about my ex is that he was also a Mets/Twins fan. How often do you find THAT in NY?!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:05 PM

Stacy, you should be working on your sign!! Get those lottery tickets!!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:06 PM

Lottery tickets would kick butt. Especially brought over by Clay Matvick.

Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2005 09:09 PM

A hundred tickets... you'd have to win some cash with a hundred tickets!! FREE tickets!!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:10 PM

*sigh* I miss Dougie.. I'm so jealous that you guys get to see him still. He will always have a corner of my heart reserved just for him...

I try to get to 10 - 15 games a year. But really, that is about the max that I can afford. You are right that it is more a treat than a regular thing for kids now. Although I do love the whole Sunday Kids day thing. But I love having kids around and enjoying themselves - discovering baseball and enjoying it.

I actually didn't grow up with baseball. I discovered it myself while I was in high school and it was all because of that first Twins World Series team. I think it is great if the kids figure out baseball before that late in life. I am still working on the youngsters in my family. I think I have gotten one of them.. *GRIN* He begs me to bring my gloves and balls over every time I come to visit. Nothing like an 8 yo looking at you and begging to play catch... gives me chills.

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 09:11 PM

We Twins/Mets fans are rare breed indeed.

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:12 PM

I was living in London when the Twins won in '91. But I wasn't a Twins fan at the time. I was also in London when the Mets won in '86!! It was torture!!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:13 PM

Dougie is the best!

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:13 PM

Dougie was my #1 Twins BF so I was tickled pink when he came here. Though I was ticked off at him for the WS baseball thing.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:14 PM

I was in London last year, but we didn't win.

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:15 PM

So I guess I don't have to move back there to get the Mets to win... my friends were trying to get me to do that in 2000. Nice to hear that trick doesn't work.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:16 PM

I did get to watch us beat the Yankees in a sports bar surrounded by Yankee fans. That was fun.

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:17 PM

That sounds like heaven! Brian, in your honor I'm about to have a cup of tea and some chocolate Hobnobs!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:18 PM

Hunh. Just had a DH enter the game as the C in the 7th inning (in Oklahoma). Gardy would have a hissy fit....

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:18 PM

Where did you get Hobnobs?

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:19 PM

My local supermarket sells them!! $3.39. I don't like sweets but I love Hobnobs. They also sell PG Tips tea.

No way! I'm not a huge Hobnob fan, but if you knew of a place in MN that sells them, my parents would be in heaven!

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:22 PM

Are your parents British?

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:22 PM

*laughing* No. Sorry, don't mean to laugh, but if you knew my parents....

The first time they left the country was to visit me in London last year. But they really loved the hobnobs (and Malteasers) and every time I go over I have to come back with gobs of the stuff...

:)

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:28 PM

How funny. I can still hear the Maltesers jingle in my head. They're the same as Whoppers, you know. ;-)

Shopenglandonline.com is a good place to go, if you wnat to surprise them.

Goodness, look what we're using Batgirl's site for!!!! SORRY!!!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:29 PM

Of course you know when I am talking Twins WS, I mean the '87 team. I just fell in love with Kirby, Hrbek, Gladden, Gaetti, Gagne, Lombardozzi, Viola and of course Bert Blyleven.. *GRIN*

By the 91 Series, I was already a solid Twins baseball fan and I was actually AT Game 1 because two of my brothers were in the high school marching band that played the pregame entertainment.. *SIGH* They each got a free ticket for a family member and I, being the only baseball fan in the family, got both tickets. Too awesome to believe...

I hated when Dougie left but I loved that he got a ring out of it and we were all cheering for the Sox to win last year against the Yankees anyway. Now that he has that, I like that he is on the Mets. I just will wait for the day he comes back to us to play his final days - something he says he still wants to do... *dreams*

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 09:30 PM

Do you think batgirl would mind?

And Whoppers arent the same....the chocolate isnt as good. :)

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:30 PM

Babs, what was I thinking? But I was in London for '87, too.

Didn't know Dougie wanted to come back to the Twins. That would be nice. I was heartbroken when he went.

Brian, I don't know... she DOES like bringing Batlings together... ;-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:32 PM

I went to the same High School as Hrbek! (Just many many years later...)

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:34 PM

Brian, I will check my supermarkets (C-Town and Stop & Shop both have a British section) for the Maltesers for your folks. You're in Queens, right?

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:38 PM

Currently. I'm moving to Greenpoint at the end of the month.

My parents are coming to NY (again, for the first time) in mid-June.

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:40 PM

Laurie, it was something he said in one of the interviews after he was traded.. awhile after but we talked about here on Batgirl so it will be in the archives somewhere.

He said something about wanting to come back and finish out here or maybe coach even - something like that. Basically saying that he will always love the Twins and Minnesota. *sniff* It brings a tear to my eye just thinking about my Dougie Baseball.

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 09:40 PM

We MUST surprise them with some Hobnobs and Maltesers! :-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:41 PM

Babs, even The Nathanest hasn't filled that empty space, huh? My friend Barbara knows your BF Joe. I have never met him, though.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:42 PM

Dougie has heart. Like Hrbek did. Of course, I played 1B when I played in London, so I guess I'm a softy for first basement.

Laurie - that would be fantastic!

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:43 PM

We have to!! Email me and we'll arrange it!! :-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:44 PM

Well, I just got back from the game. Wow, what a debacle. The Brewers simply manhandled us at every aspect of the game.

Brad was not rad tonight, and the Crain Train was derailed with a miserable outing. Hopefully that'll get the crappiness out of his system.

The real problem, of course, was the utter ass-battery occurring the entire game. The radar display didn't seem to be working for most of the game, but it's fair to say their pitcher wasn't blowing us away with heat. At least against Kenny Rogers last week, he was on a pretty amazing scoreless streak. I just don't see any excuse for this. On the bright side, Lew got some hits, Stewie was very good, and Cuddy remained hot. He should've had one more hit than he did -- he was robbed by the Brewers' SS on an absolute rocket.

So, I've really come to agree with those who say that Sweetcheeks, God bless him, just isn't cut out for the five hole right now. Here's how I think our lineup should look:

1. Stewie
2. LNP
3. The Chairman
4. Doctor Morneau
5. DJ Cuddles
6. JJ
7. Lew
8. Sweetcheeks
9. Castro (who really needs a nickname!)

I'd say that 6 and 7 might be interchangeable. Sorry for the long post; just had to get that all off my chest.

Posted by: Nick at May 21, 2005 09:45 PM

Yeah, the obvious nickname isn't very pleasant...

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:46 PM

I think Lew should be two, and am a bit uncomfy with DJ that high in the order.....

But that's just me....

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:47 PM

What, oil?

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:49 PM

GTX!!!!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:49 PM

I could see Lew in the two hole, perhaps. I like DJ fifth based on how he's hitting right now, which is nothing short of awesome. I guess I'm the type that prefers a more flexible lineup. That's not to say that a guy gets knocked down in the order after a bad game or two, but if you're struggling for weeks on end like Sweetcheeks and you're that high in the order, something has to change.

Posted by: Nick at May 21, 2005 09:49 PM

GTX? That's funny. I was thinking more along the line of Comrade something or another...

Posted by: Nick at May 21, 2005 09:50 PM

That was a collaborative effort from the two New Yorkers.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:51 PM

SuperOil!

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:54 PM

We're getting punchy now!! LOL

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:54 PM

Batgirl is going to read this thread and be like "what the....?"

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:56 PM

Yes, perhaps we should quit before she bans us.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:57 PM

Laurie,

The Nathanest of Joes is an old fashioned gentlemen who kindly acknowledges and allows a bit of space for fond memories. And then promptly wins me back with the freckles and the grunt - and of course some SERIOUS pitching.

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 09:58 PM

Its been mostly baseball - I think we're ok. And Nick and Babs are still around....somewhere....
*looks around, wondering if they are still here*

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 09:59 PM

He's apparently The Sweetest of Joes, too, from what I hear. But you already knew that...

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 09:59 PM

He is one I would really love to meet someday Laurie. I always end up picking the guys with the big hearts - Brian was absolutely right about Dougie and Hrbek - and I think Joe fits right in there.

Nick, I'm sorry that they didn't give you a better game. I think I have to agree with you about shuffling the order though. Not sure that is the exact lineup I would go with but it is such a touchy thing.

I think I might put Cuddy in the 3rd spot - if JJ can hold on to this new patience thing he has learned at the plate. He forgets once in awhile but all in all is doing much better with that than last season.

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 10:03 PM

I think I like Cuddy at 3 too.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 10:04 PM

I agree with Nick. Radke looked terrible. It's especially shameful after the last three starts (and especially a REALLY bad follow-up to last night's game)

Had he at least pitched WELL I wouldn't have mind a loss. But to fall right back to typical first inning longball form was not what the Twins needed. We were building momentum off three straight great starts, and that momentum literally came to a crashing halt (as best demonstrated by Crain's unfortunate drailment)

As far as a batting order...I always had dreams of a Stewart, Ford, Mauer, Morneau 1-4. But Punto's been working in that number two spot.

I could see something similar to what Nick has set up. Hunter definately needs to be stepped down a peg or two until he breaks his slump. Learn from Cuddy, and earn your spot back. But right now Morneau needs protection...because they won't pitch to him if they can just put him on and count on Hunter to double him off right away.

Posted by: Torhu at May 21, 2005 10:05 PM

well guys, I wish you all a fond good night. I'm off to catch up on some back issues of CSI that I have never been home to watch.

Hopefully I will catch up with Y'all during tomorrow's game.

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 21, 2005 10:06 PM

Can't see Gardy dropping SC to 8, though. That would be a shocker if it really happened.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 10:06 PM

'Night, Babs! :-)

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 10:07 PM

But what else do you do? Hunter just isn't producing in a situation where the guys before him of late are consistantly on base.

Maybe Cuddy or Ford could get that opportunity. Jones even. But NOT Hunter. Maybe not an automatic drop to 8th, but at least a drop out of 5. If he even switch Jones and Hunter I'd be all for it. Something new.

But if Cuddy keeps hitting, you need to put him in a spot where he can hit men in.

Posted by: Torhu at May 21, 2005 10:08 PM

*sigh*

Posted by: kafumbly at May 21, 2005 10:09 PM

Yeah, even to 6 might be good, let JJ or Lewwwww protect Morneau. Or swap Morneau and Mauer....

Posted by: NY-Brian at May 21, 2005 10:09 PM

Yeah, I think a drop to 6 is more realistic. Quite frankly, the way he's hitting now, he deserves the 8 spot, but it might be a little harsh on the psychological side of things. And I do think he'll turn it around. The problem is that we can't just sit back and wait for him to start hitting when he has to provide protection to the Doctor.

Posted by: Nick at May 21, 2005 10:13 PM

No. Morneau's the clean-up guy. In interviews with Mauer and Morneau it's pretty clear they work together well that way.

Mauer is a good hitter, but he doesn't provide the percieved threat at every at bat. Pitchers fear Morneau (as demonstrated by his recent tendency to walk) and thus he fits at number 4.

Posted by: Torhu at May 21, 2005 10:14 PM

My last comment was to NYBrian, not Nick. And I agree, us wanting him 8th may be a bit harsh. But he may end up there if he keeps it up.

Posted by: Torhu at May 21, 2005 10:15 PM

So how much longer do people think Gardy lets this go if Torii doesn't start hitting? Does he get a little more leeway because he's been with the team for a (relatively) long time and has put up decent to good numbers in the past?

Posted by: Nick at May 21, 2005 10:18 PM

Yes.

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 10:29 PM

Hello Everyone. Although the game may have been disappointing to all of us I do have a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel (at least for me).

I don't know the downtown area very well and my friends and I were driving around looking for a liquor store so we could go back to our hotel for a little post-game party. Well much to my surprise and happiness I just happened to be at the same liquor store at the same time as Justin Morneau himself. I did a double take to say the least. HOLY HELL....IT WAS JUSTIN MORNEAU IN THE FLESH!!!

What a day.....

btw, he drinks Crud Light

Posted by: twins fan in SD at May 21, 2005 10:33 PM

Don't think I'm too crazy about this development... I'd rather he be drinking warm milk in his jammies right now...

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 10:35 PM

I should share my other little rant about tonight's game. I ended up going by myself, because none of my usual buddies could make it. I don't mind going by myself now that I've done it twice, but I was incredibly annoyed by the inane chatter of those around me, most of which had nothing to do with baseball.

So, I think when I'm by myself, I'll sit further up so I don't have to hear that. Does this make me sound like a jerk or elitist, or is it ok? :)

Posted by: Nick at May 21, 2005 10:35 PM

Well, I think I'm heading out of here. I've taken up enough valuable bandwith for one night. Goodnight, fellow Batlings!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 10:35 PM

(Glad you weren't here tonight, Nick... LOL)

GOODNIGHT!!!

Posted by: LaurieNY at May 21, 2005 10:36 PM

Well, I don't mind it so much when I at least know that the people do know something about baseball. :)

So yeah, I'm not sure what to think of the Doctor frequenting the liquor store, with a game tomorrow afternoon. Then again, David Wells pitched a perfect game when hung over, and Babe Ruth was apparently drunk all the time. So who are we to judge?

Posted by: Nick at May 21, 2005 10:38 PM

so that game was sad. mostly. I'm going to try to remember the good things, like Luke Fordwalker's two doubles. and, um... Stewie had two hits. and zeros from Shaggy, JC, and Banjo Mulholland. and, um... my boyfriend Jesse Crain got these two runs out of his system while we were losing by 4 runs, anyway, instead of when we're ahead by 1 or 2. and, um... uh... that might be it.

but some a fun observation from the dugout before the game... I like to watch them when they do their handshakes; it makes me laugh. so DJ and Castor Oil were doing their little handshake, and I FINALLY got to see the end of it: they jump a couple times, then drop their hats on the floor and do a little Mexican hat dance. hee hee

the crowd tonight was LAME. aside from the mobs of Brewers fans, the Twins fans were silent the whole game. even little Rodriguez didn't get any kind of welcome at all, unless silence is a way of saying, "welcome to Minnesota." that was just snotty. DJ and LNP barely got any applause, and Castor Oil and NBP got no applause. how are the boys supposed to fire up if the crowd isn't even acknowledging that they exist? and this is all after I listened to Dan Gladden and the radio boys talk about the lame crowds in Toronto and Montreal.

but then after the game, Steve Liddle was giving Rodriguez some practice catching pop-ups. most of 'em ended up routine catches, but at least one was really nice. I was a little annoyed with DJ during the game, though... it's like he didn't trust Rodriguez to field the ball, and he ran in on two plays that should have been Rodriguez'. dunno if they told him to do that ahead of time, but I thought it was a little odd.

Posted by: kafumbly at May 21, 2005 10:48 PM

You have to admit though kafumbly...it's hard for the crowd to get into the game when it starts out with their boys down 2-0.

I was at the game against Boston where Minty debuted as a Red Sock. Radke gave up a leadoff homerun to Damon, and the crowd died.

Thankfully the Twins had the good bats out and Radke managed to calm down for the most part.

The fans cheered up and got back into the game because the picthing there got back in step. In this game it sputtered at the start and put up two REALLY depressing innings (2 runs off longball and 2 off error)

Posted by: Torhu at May 21, 2005 11:01 PM

yeah, I know. but people are always able to cheer for Torii and Jacque when they are sucking. it would be nice if there could at least be some applause for the rest of the guys, especially when they're hitting the ball better than most everyone else.

Posted by: kafumbly at May 21, 2005 11:09 PM

I agree, kafumbly. Torii, in particular, always gets lots of applause. But they were pretty much ignoring folks like LNP and NMB, despite the fact that A) they're Twins and B) they've made very significant contributions to the team this year.

I also noticed that practically nobody even applauded for Rodriguez, though I definitely did. By that point, though, I'm not sure most people were even paying close enough attention to know that it was his first big-league AB. Indeed, I'll bet a very sizeable chunk of the crowd didn't even know who he was.

Posted by: Nick at May 21, 2005 11:13 PM

And by "NMB" I of course mean NBP.

Posted by: Nick at May 21, 2005 11:15 PM

Anyone going to the game tomorrow?

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 11:16 PM

I will be in section 129

Posted by: mas at May 21, 2005 11:43 PM

Ahhh a late night...

Settle down at the computer, Baseball Tonight swirling in my head as a fine glass of sauverngion blanc...sauvenion...sawvernyon...wine swirls in my hand.

The White Sox make a come-back even I, a die-hard Sox fan, never saw coming. I thought Zambrano zambeat our zambrains in. That ritalin deprived dynamo almost had me fearful that we would drop one to our lowly neighbors...but as was the case in 2000, fate has intervened to make the Sox nigh invincible! Konerko saves the day thanks to an unlikely Patterson misplay on a tough dive. I've seen him make those routinely. Today? Against the Sox? Not hardly.

So of course on my end I'm all happy, and I wonder about the Twins. Coincidentally, my Sox-alumni-o-meter started blaring. Something was funny...what connection is there...Milwaukee versus Minnesota...what former Sox player would possibly cause such an alarm in this game?

Ah yes, El Cabllo. Carlos, re-meet the Twins, Twins, here's your ole buddy Carlos Lee.

As far as that goes, all I'll say is thank God I accidentally sat Brad Radke on my fantasy team.

19 games over .500. Feels good. Feels ridiculous too, like no team should be almost 20 games over .500 until the all-star break. Oh well, I'll take it for now.

Hm. Brandon McCarthy...minor league pitcher of the year in 2004. Walloped Texas and Anaheim in spring training. Funny, I thought Minnesota and Oakland were the two big minor-league mavins. Well well. My my. Poor Cubbies meet Brandon McCarthy, Brandon meet the first of your many future victims.

Maybe Morneau was just stocking up on beer for after Sunday's game -- liquor stores are closed on Sunday, y'know, and he doesn't want to get stuck with watered-down gas station/grocery store beer. I would have preferred, however, that he drank some kind of Canadian beer. Maybe he's just trying to "fit in". We all know the pressures exerted by a peer group.

Posted by: spycake at May 22, 2005 07:49 AM

I would love to be at today's game, listen to it even, but I will be at my weekend job from 10am-3pm. argh! and I was even offered a free ticket from my new season ticket holder friends in 214.

well, I'll just have to tape it and watch when I get home. Tumbleweed will have to promise not to tell me how it ends...

Posted by: kafumbly at May 22, 2005 08:02 AM

I'm thinking about going to today's game.. I have a single ticket and would be going by myself which I don't really have a problem doing but it is shaping up to be a gorgeous day and I haven't seen my family in over a week.

But I can always get together with them after the game right??

I will be in Section 118, Row 11. I better not be smelling anything coming off the young Dr - but my guess is that he was stocking up for a free Sunday evening when the stores are closed too. After all, tomorrow is an off day so if a young man is going to party when he works 6 days a week, this would be the day. Hmm... *ponders how to work an invite to Hotel Joe..*

As far as the beer selection - keep in mind he may be picking up someone ELSE's selection.. *GRIN*

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 22, 2005 08:46 AM

um... don't they play at Cleveland tomorrow? they don't have an off day until NEXT Monday. so Mr. Doctor better pace himself with those brewskis, unless he wants me to give him a good spanking... and...

*ahem*

I'm going to stop there.

Posted by: kafumbly at May 22, 2005 09:07 AM

umm.. yeah.. see - I don't even know what day it is anymore...

Still, it's a free evening. He doesn't get many of those.

Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 22, 2005 09:12 AM

I must point out somethig I discovered reading the news recaps of the game this morning. I was complimenting the very attractive features of our opposing pitcher last night but was unable to know how accurate those opinions might be as the game wasn't on TV!!! Anyway, in viewing the pictures of Mr Davis, I have to point out that he's not NEARLY as photogenic as our boys while in the actual ACT of pitching. The action shots aren't as pretty as the mug shot.

I still feel it is an amazing accomplishment to have a good mugshot but still. I will stick to my own BF and his adorable grunt for attractive action shots.
