Poor DJ Cuddles. Yesterday he went 3-3 with the game winning home run and managed to survive defensively during the Return of Corey Koskie, but he still finished second in the B.O.D. race to My. Kyle Lohse who gave the Twins exactly the pitching performance they needed. Today, Batgirl had already addressed the B.O.D. telegram to him, what with his genius 13 pitch at bat with the bases loaded, and she was just calling the messenger service to arrange delivery when Joe Mays pitched out of trouble in the seventh. Then Mays came back in the eighth and Batgirl hung up the phone. Then the ninth, and Batgirl ripped up the telegram and started to type a new one. Diamond Joe pitched a nine inning shutout in ninety-three pitches (and no walks), which, really, is mad hot. And that hotness makes you, Joe Mays, the Boyfriend of the Day.
Field/Readers 7, Jeb/Lewwww 6, Goober/Dr. Morneau 4, Sooz/ Stewie 4, Batgirl/Joe 2.
man... we really needed two hot pitching outings in a row. It just seems to improve EVERYONE's mood.
Way to go Diamond Joe!
Cuddles, can't believe you pulled 13 pitches out of him on that... gorgeous.
Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 19, 2005 02:55 PMPoor DJ Cuddles. What'll we do when it comes down to him an' Little Nicky Punto one fine day? Have two almost-Boyfriends? ;)
But no-- today was indeed, definitely, indubitably May's day. WOW.
Posted by: Katharriet at May 19, 2005 02:56 PMAwesome, can't believe he is the fifth starter.
Posted by: jose at May 19, 2005 02:56 PMIt just goes to show that you don't have to worry about hitting the wall when you only throw 93 pitches over 9 innings.
Posted by: mk at May 19, 2005 02:56 PMBartlett was optioned to Rochester??? Nooooooooooooo!
Posted by: ndtf at May 19, 2005 03:00 PMJust heard -
Jason Bartlett has been optioned to Rochester.
Posted by: heraldguy at May 19, 2005 03:00 PMSo I was babysitting and got done and turned on the car radio just in time to hear "Joe Mays is on the verge of a shutout win." I thought I must have been hearing things, what with a baby screaming all afternoon and all. Then Mays gave up a double, and I thought I was hearing correctly again. Regardless, once the game was over, I realized that JOE MAYS had, in fact, pitched a CG shutout. My next thought was, "I bet he's going to be BOD."
Congrats, Joe!!
Posted by: Stacy at May 19, 2005 03:00 PMHBFEOUYVJEBHDUYGDE?!!?!?
COME BACK, JASON!!!!!!!
Who'd they bring up?
Posted by: Stacy at May 19, 2005 03:01 PMBartlett being sent down almost completely killed my buzz from the game. When Cuddy hit his double, I think my grin was probably about as big as his was.
Posted by: ndtf at May 19, 2005 03:06 PMKoskie broke his thumb sliding into 2nd. Bummer.
Posted by: Brundlefly at May 19, 2005 03:07 PMMy Boyfriend...sent to the Minors...What am I to do?
TIS OK. In a couple of weeks, his swing will be back on track, his glove will be hot and he'll return to his starting spot!!!
I'll miss you JASON!!!
Posted by: jill at May 19, 2005 03:07 PMThey're bringing Luis Rodriguez up...
Two "L.R"'s in the middle of the infield
Secondly, I forgot to say...THIS IS THE 3rd Time McDimples has been robbed of his very deserving BOD honor!!! I don't disagree, Joe Mays pitched amazingly, but jeepers Cuddyer wants to be loved by us batlings too!
Posted by: jill at May 19, 2005 03:09 PMBartlett back to minors..*sniffles*
I am now torn between feelings of excitement from the amazing Joe Performance today and the sadness of Bartlett.
I need to not be confused like this..it gives me heartburn
*chugs some alka-seltzer*
The Strib reported that Luis Rodriquez, the guy replacing Bartlett was out because of back spasms. Hmmm... Don't understand that one.
Posted by: Brundlefly at May 19, 2005 03:15 PMBrundlefly,
Don't worry about Koskie's thumb. He's in Canadia now, they'll make him a new one. And if he's lucky, it'll be one of those spy thumbs with all sorts of cool gadgets for better pranking.
MK
Posted by: mk at May 19, 2005 03:16 PMGuess when he heard he was getting called up, he got better in a hurry!
sorry about the double post.
Posted by: Brundlefly at May 19, 2005 03:16 PMBartlett's comments in yesterdays Strib made it seem as if he was asking to be sent down. We can use Doug M logic with Castro, every hit he takes away should be credited to him and then he'll be a .300. hitter.
Where are the Cuddaver and Cuderror critics now?
Posted by: Tony Boliva at May 19, 2005 03:17 PMAw. Cuddy at least deserves a good write up in the game summary, I think.
Posted by: CarrieIC at May 19, 2005 03:18 PMThat's right, he is bionic isn't he. Watch out for supersonic thumbs ups from Koskie in a month.
Posted by: Brundlefly at May 19, 2005 03:18 PMSure we have El Presidente, Bradke, Boo and The Nathanest as classic favorites, but ever since Joe came back from the TJ surgery, I've rooted for him, hoped, prayed, crossed my fingers and wished on shooting stars that he'd come back strong, healthy and most of all, he'd come back as a great pitcher. Deep down, I've had a special little place in my heart for him (not in the boyfriend way, so don't panic Doc, your safe, but you best get to hittin' again!). Anyway, I think he's made tremendous strides after being sidelined for so long and this superb outing is just what he needed. Thank you Batgirl for making him Boyfriend of the Day.
Poor Dimples, he'll get his due one of these days.
Posted by: HooliganKat at May 19, 2005 03:30 PMPoor Cuddy. But Mays really deserved it. When he got out of trouble in the 7th and 8th, I found myself thinking, "That is SO hot."
Posted by: SaraZ at May 19, 2005 03:31 PMcongrats, Joe! I saw that wall comin', but you did a splendid job of stopping just short! I am so very sad that I didn't get to see this one in person.
>>Poor DJ Cuddles. What'll we do when it comes down to him an' Little Nicky Punto one fine day?
Posted by: kafumbly at May 19, 2005 03:43 PMwow, it did it again... half my post is gone... let's try this one more time, but just the stuff that's missing...
>>Poor DJ Cuddles. What'll we do when it comes down to him an' Little Nicky Punto one fine day?
Posted by: kafumbly at May 19, 2005 03:44 PMoh, for crying out loud! I give up.
Posted by: kafumbly at May 19, 2005 03:45 PMMy boyfriend always ends up in second place...poor kid. But it was, without a double, Mays' Day.
I'm hoping against hope that Jason was sent down to bring up someone because Little Nicky Punto has been eaten, and has not been recovered yet. That's my hope, anyway. And that the minors stint is what his bat needs.
Just Beth
Posted by: Just Beth at May 19, 2005 03:51 PMDid anyone read the article about Cuddy being deaf in his left ear? I had no idea, bless his heart for not letting it get him down.
As for Young Master Bartlett getting sent down, I think it's going to be the best thing for him. He needs to play more consistently to get his groove back. Yes, he'll be missed for the time being, but it's best for him. I'm actually suprised Gardy didn't do it sooner.
Posted by: HooliganKat at May 19, 2005 03:52 PMI laughed at the Cuddy article. I have hearing loss in my right ear, so I was like, "hey, I do that! and I do that, too!"
I think Bart will be back this season. he's just got a few things to work on, and then he'll be back.
(I hope this works this time)
Posted by: kafumbly at May 19, 2005 04:09 PMWell, that pretty much settles my LNP vs. Young Master Bartlett boyfriend dilemma.
Posted by: Say Rah! at May 19, 2005 04:16 PMwoo! my buddy Mike took a few pictures from his "good seats" in 121. click my name for the link to a pdf. that's Corey before he broke his thumb. and the chick on the jumbotron is our friend Melissa, who lost at Dodge Ball.
Posted by: kafumbly at May 19, 2005 04:24 PMWay to go Joe!
Way to go Cuddy!
I was following on Gamecast at work this afternoon. It was all I could do to keep from laughing aloud every time Mikey fouled of another pitch—and with the bases loaded no less! Could our three-guys-on troubles be coming to an end? As long as the pitchers keep throwing like that, I don't really care.
P.S. kafumbly, your post was disappearing because of the "<" you were using. "<" means the start of some HTML, but you weren't typing HTML. Such is the intraweb.
Posted by: joel. at May 19, 2005 04:26 PMBartlett my BF being sent down is heart breaking. I should have never brought the BG T-shirt. Last time I bought my BF's T-shirt (Dougie) he got traded.
Posted by: mas at May 19, 2005 04:31 PMThe Doctor has such a nice butt, man alive. . .uh, sorry I have no internal dialog when I look at him, What I meant was great pictures.

Posted by: HooliganKat at May 19, 2005 04:32 PMIt's ok, HooliganKat, I was thinking the exact same thing. Canadian power hitters are so hot...
Posted by: ndtf at May 19, 2005 04:40 PMI was standing at the top of Section 119 during that 14 pitch at bat - holding hot dogs for the "co-workers" - the dogs were cold and the beer was warm by the time I got to my seat!
Posted by: Spike at May 19, 2005 04:41 PMYou have to love half-days at work when you work in downtown Minneapolis and there's a 12:10 Twins game. I got to the game just as the bottom of the first was starting, so I saw almost all of Joe's masterpiece. During the middle innings, especially, he seemed to be throwing amazingly well, getting ground out after ground out, and putting together some VERY fast innings. I couldn't believe Cuddy's AB. He was right on a ton of those pitches, and barely missed a grand slam foul.

Posted by: kafumbly at May 19, 2005 06:07 PMDear Ms. Fumbly,
HA! No code in the comments, due to spammers, but still when you use that indicator it seems to look for HTML cues instead of, you know, publishing what you want to say.

kafumbly, knowing HTML and how to encode characters usually ends up in confusing people. Sorry 'bout that :( Just avoid that left carrot and you're golden. (or type in & l t ; (without the spaces)) to produce <)
Posted by: joel. at May 19, 2005 08:41 PMno, I know HTML. I just didn't think this site would accept it, so I thought it was safe to use them. heh. no biggie.
Posted by: kafumbly at May 19, 2005 08:53 PMD'oh. Now I feel foolish[er].
Posted by: joel. at May 19, 2005 09:52 PMha! no, don't feel foolish, joel. it probably would have taken me a couple more times of losing half my post to figure it out. (I can be quite slow at times.) I sincerely appreciate that you explained what was going on! saves me a bunch of headache. I actually feel silly for not having thought of it before.
but really, it's all quite funny. :)
Posted by: kafumbly at May 20, 2005 06:12 AMSome weeks ago I ordered myself a Bartlett jersey.
It came yesterday.
Whee.
Posted by: infield at May 20, 2005 08:55 AMinfield, I firmly believe that he will be back! and we'll have Carrie say it, too, so that it will be so.
your Bartlett jersey is not for naught!
Posted by: kafumbly at May 20, 2005 10:18 AMkafumbly,
I know he'll be back. He is my (second) boyfriend, and I believe in him!
But the timing, you must admit, was spectacularly bad. ;)
Posted by: infield at May 20, 2005 10:44 AMOh, infield!
Posted by: Batgirl at May 20, 2005 10:46 AM*sniff* I want my boyfriend Jersey... *pout*
BG?? any luck with that yet!?
Posted by: CapitalBabs at May 20, 2005 10:51 AMMy dearest Ms. Babs,
I sent letters to the players asking for permission, now I simply have to wait and see if they write back.
Love,
BG
I don't know if this plays into the BOD award consideration, but Mays really needed the award most, so I can't complain, despite the fact that D.J. most certainly contributed most to the Twins victory in my humble opinion...Actually, I guess according to the rules I wouldn't be able to complain anyway, so it's just as well. Congrats, Joe, you pitched a gem today. Hopefully the President was watching and taking notes.
Posted by: Florida at May 20, 2005 11:02 AM"But the timing, you must admit, was spectacularly bad. ;)"
for sure. but it wouldn't be a good story otherwise, would it? ;)
