First of all, there are any number of Minnesota Twins who owe Justin Morneau—and by extension, Goober—a profuse apology. I mean he was all set up to be the B.O.D. and then some, what with going 4 for 5 with two RBIs and having a nice pick on an errant Jason Bartlett throw in one late inning or another (it's all a blur right now). But then the game went into extra innings (we don't want to talk about that, really) and after a lead-off hit in the tenth Morneau was lifted for a pinch runner—who promptly got picked-off.
Now, Morneau's performance was still exemplary, but close behind him in the early B.O.D.-stakes was one Lew Ford who broke the tie in the 7th with an RBI double. Then, in the 11th, Ford came up with two outs and Mauer on second and singled to left, scoring the Chairman and giving the Twins the lead, and the victory, and giving himself the Boyfriend of the Day
NOTE TO GOOBER: No talkbalk—the B.O.D. bylaws very specifically specify that the boyfriend who most contributes to the Twins victory gets the coveted B.O.D. Actually, there's no talkback anyway. That's in the bylaws too.
Jeb/Lewwww 5, Field/ Readers 4, Sooz/ Stewie 2, Batgirl/Joe 1, Goober/Dr. Morneau 1.
Posted by Batgirl at April 28, 2005 05:18 PMwas there ever a doubt? mlb needs to bring back the gwrbi. my guess is leeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww leads the league this year. i was considering buying a t-shirt, but lew sold it today.
i love that man.
595 comments in the game thread? Do you people WORK for a living? Are there game-thread highlights on batgirlrules.com? How long til Punto takes over second, Tiffee plays third, Cuddyer moves to the bench and Rivas becomes toast? Isn't it nice to see the B-Sox lead cut in half (5 games to 2 1/2) in less than 48 hours? Anyone else going to the Dome tomorrow? No further questions.
I have to agree here. As much as the Good Dr played exactly as we would wish him to play today, that level of exemplariness (is that a word) is only highlighted because so many of our boys were distinctly playing below standard.
Sometimes Luck and Timing are on the side of a particular batter that brings them up to the play that turned the game. Today, they were in Lew's pocket.
Posted by: CapitalBabs at April 28, 2005 05:27 PMWe work, but frankly, working wasn't much fun, and no one was paying attention anyway. So GameChannel and BatGirl were on the laptop instead of Excel and database conversions. And I feel no shame, you hear? No shame!
Congrats to Lew and his rapidly growing harem on a most excellent outing.
Posted by: CarrieIC at April 28, 2005 05:29 PMRD- I work AND post at the same time
I love my job
and yes its nice to see the lead cut in half
I wouldn't have gotten picked off second
Posted by: Terry Tiffee at April 28, 2005 05:33 PMI know he's not an offical boyfriend..To me yes But how bout a nod to Frasier Crain..I mean..He now has as many wins as Radke and Lohse....Oh..thats kinda sad....
Posted by: Bojanglescrain at April 28, 2005 05:35 PMWe know Terry...we know...

THANK YOU!
just a question....How did the name DJ Cuddles come up? ITs a cute name
Posted by: Bojanglescrain at April 28, 2005 05:45 PM
Aren't sweeps just yummy? Even if it IS only the Royals...
I hope Lew does a post-game interview every day.
Posted by: TwinsGoddess at April 28, 2005 05:47 PMRD - Keep in mind the game went 11 innings, resulting in almost 20% more sass than normal.
Posted by: Skorch at April 28, 2005 05:50 PMOK, I am starting to think there is some kind of kickback going on here. I mean, it's been nothing but Lew, Lew, Lew ever since Jeb picked him. Does anyone else suspect the fix is in?
Posted by: Word Smith at April 28, 2005 05:51 PMThey just showed a quick highlight of the game on ESPN. Dan Patrick referred to Lew Ford as grttty and gutty, as he hit the game winner. WELL DONE LEW
Posted by: Scotty Dawg at April 28, 2005 05:53 PMDearest Mrs. Crain,
There was an item in the Strib that referred to Mr. Cuddyer's extensive music collection. And, of course, he's very cuddly.
Love,
BG
P.S. Ms. Smith, BG's in it to win it! It's not her fault Lew's the greatest baseball player ever.
Posted by: Batgirl at April 28, 2005 05:56 PMThank you bat girl...I must have missed that article. I sometimes refer to Dj Cuddles as Studdly Cuddly...but thats just something i do.
Posted by: Bojanglescrain at April 28, 2005 05:58 PMSome of us refer to the third baseman as Cuddly Duddly.
Anyone here -- Chicagoans of a certain age, especially -- want to do an etymology of that name?
Posted by: RonDavis at April 28, 2005 06:10 PMI'd silently protest with Goober.
Poor Dr, shown up AGAIN by Lew. You'll get it next time Darling, keep swinging!
Posted by: HooliganKat at April 28, 2005 06:15 PMSorry to Goober and Dr. Morneau, he should have gotten the B.O.D. honors, if only the Twins had not given up the lead in the 9th and given Lew Ford a chance to hit in the game-winning run (runner?) in the 11th.
Alas, ifs are not enough to win the B.O.D. competition.
(And despite the Good Doctor's great performance, who really doubted that when Lew Ford came up to bat he would not only get a hit to allow the Chairman to score, but the B.O.D.S.H.C. would smile on him and grant him the B.O.D. win as well?)
Posted by: Webster at April 28, 2005 06:20 PMOK, sorry, BG, I should have known not to doubt the integrity of the BODSHC. More likely Lew has been inspired by the honor of being chosen to follow in Corey's footsteps, eh?
While I embrace witless glee in all its forms, I have to point out that we are 6-0 vs. K.C. and 7-8 vs everyone else, and we have a manager who thinks it is important that the human flotsam on the roster get plenty of playing time, while the real players sit. Today, it was only Miller over Joe, and I know about the Papal knee edict, but playing, the Angels, for instance, will require actual major league ability on the part of our boys. I was only kidding about the "embracing" part. Who were the only 3 major leaguers ever to hit 2 bases loaded triples in the same game? These games all occured between 1950, and 1980. Al
Posted by: al at April 28, 2005 06:26 PMword smith:
geeks relate to lew ford. some of us geeks have money to blow on shirts that most people spend on their "social lives." hence lew's t-shirt dominance. this run of two-out rbi clutch hits isn't hurting his stature, either.
i'm currently struggling with a heart-wrenching decision: do i go with the lew ford green "boyfriend" shirt, which, while certainly funnier, is also not the best idea for skinny, neat, clean-cut looking dudes like myself (not that there's anything wrong with that)? or do i play it safe and go with the slightly more masculine ringer T? decisions, decisions...
Posted by: clay jr at April 28, 2005 06:53 PMGood job Lew. That bunt off your face really helped your cause for BOD.
Posted by: JHK at April 28, 2005 06:55 PMLew definitely deserves BOD glory; tough break for the Good Dr., who was really, really Good today.
Flotsam... yes. Tons of it. Juan Castro had just started to win me over today when he bobbled that ball and blew the VP his save. If Mr. Nathan is anything like his Federal counterpoint, there must've been a lot of swearing.
I was, however, thrilled to see Cuddyer out of the lineup today. He needs to sit in the corner and think about what he's done.
Posted by: Haplo at April 28, 2005 06:58 PMTho it does not seem to be inciting much of a reaction, the 3 two triple games occured between '49 and '78. Al
Posted by: al at April 28, 2005 07:45 PMDear RonDavis,
I will be in the Dump tomorrow. and Sunday. and I am very, very, very excited! and Sunday... I get to sit straight down the third base line in (what used to be) the SECOND ROW! my Twins-obsessed friend has invited me to sit in the "good seats" with him, and that makes me very happy. I may even learn how to keep score properly.
sincerely,
kafumbly
p.s. oh, how I hope they replay Lew's bunt attempt on Baseball Tonight... alas, they haven't even shown any highlights at all, as they keep having to talk about Curt Schilling vs. Lou Pinhead. bastards.
Posted by: kafumbly at April 28, 2005 09:18 PMkafumbly!! I will be at the game on Sunday!!!!!! section 117, row 11, seat 11.
where is your home base?!?!?
Posted by: CapitalBabs at April 28, 2005 10:04 PMmy boyfriend, LNP, was not so spectacular today, but he did tag out a stealer and made a few other defensive plays to keep him in my graces.
I have decided to share a moment of my happiness with you from yesterday's game, when I was able to comfort Li'l Nicky after his tumble at home plate. please, click on my name below and share in the joy.
p.s. kafumbly was not patient enough with the Baseball Tonight crew... they showed Shanahan's beautiful diving catch and made it the #1 Web Gem of the day!
also, a stat *gasp*... Gardy is 81-55 in one run games, .596. that is the highest winning pct. of any manager who debuted after 1900. wow.
Posted by: Tumbleweed at April 28, 2005 10:10 PMCB, I will be in 121, row 10, seat 8.
if Luis Rivas is in the lineup, I'll signal, and we can shout "GO NUMBER TWO" together when he's at bat! ha
Posted by: kafumbly at April 28, 2005 10:13 PMAs he is my boyfriend, I did have to feel sorry for Cuddles--he finally gets a hit in a game, and the next day he has to sit and think about what he's done. And for a guy who was 0 for 3bazilllion going into last night, he'd scored a surprising number of runs (not a lot--just surprising for a guy with a batting average less than his weight).
At any rate, Lewww has managed to steal hearts of many an unsuspecting fan since he was called up to fill in for Torii last April. Well-deserved honors. And JustIncredible can just go to Brad "No one scores runs for me!" Radke for comfort in having his honor ripped away in the top of the eleventh.
Just Beth
Posted by: Just Beth at April 28, 2005 10:49 PMI will be at the game Saturday night (because that was the e-Saver deal). I haven't seen the Twins lose in the regular season since at least 2003. Of course, that could be because last year I made a point of getting to as many of Santana's home starts as possible.
P.S. Trust me, al, we knew you were kidding about embracing any kind of glee.
Posted by: Word Smith at April 28, 2005 10:50 PMOk, I'm not cool with keeping Corky at the expense of Tiffee. I'm also less than enthusiastic about Rivas at 2nd but I'm not sure that Punto is the long term answer, durability questions and all. But, I have to admit all this Cuddyer hating is really getting to me. No one hated on Koskie when he was in a slump. Or Dougie, either. Let's cut Cuddyer some slack. Or risk eating your words midseason.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at April 28, 2005 11:04 PMAnd no, RD, I *don't* work. But I'm hopeful that something will come along, soon.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at April 28, 2005 11:07 PMDearest Kitty Tumbleweed,
Thank you for sharing that picture with us. The Batkitties were jealous.
Sincerely,
BG
i'm with mmmarkiep about cuddyer. let's remember that DEREK JETER was batting about .100 this time last year. now, i despise the yankees with the intensity of a million burning hot suns, but derek jeter has my respect. i digress. my point is that even superstars go through slumps. dj will be fine.
as far as rivas is concerned, i have my theory: gardy wants terry's greatness to be concealed by hiding him in aaa until late in the year. by doing so, he springs him on the league, ensuring that tiffee comes through large in the postseason. ok, maybe not. i have no idea why luis rivas is still in the major leagues.
Posted by: clay jr at April 28, 2005 11:30 PMMy guess is that the Twins don't want to give up on Rivas just yet. I mean, the kid has the potential, but he just doesn't have the heart, in my opinion. I guess they want to give him the chance to play up to his promise. Or maybe they're hoping he'll show just enough something so that they can salvage a prospect or two from someone when they trade him. I don't know. I do know that for all the promise he's shown, he hasn't shown the desire to play up to his capabilities and that's truly sad.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at April 28, 2005 11:42 PMSo many boyfriends, so little time.
It was just a BOD-ful day.
Posted by: Stacy at April 28, 2005 11:45 PMRD-Actually, there are probably fewer than 25 people who post on the game thread, it's just that we're all very loquicious.
Wait ta go LEEEWWWWW! You really hussled to beat out the good Dr.
Posted by: ysolla at April 28, 2005 11:54 PMYou know, even though Cuddy is a terrible hitter, and not a very good third baseman, we almost lost this game because he wasn't playing. So I guess I have to give him that much...
Posted by: Florida at April 29, 2005 05:18 PMSo if we win all our games against the Royals and play .500 ball against everybody else, we will end up with 90 wins, which should be good for first place in the Central Division.
