Game Thread: Twins at Detroit.

Welcome back, Jackal. It is a great pleasure to see you again.

So, what are the chances tonights game starts on time? I see its raining in Detroit, and the forecast calls for more, but it looks like things could blow over by gametime... I just hope the Dr. Morneau stays safe on that wet field... Much as its good to have him back, maybe we should have him sit as a precautionary deal...

I'd like to see the twins keep rubbing in to Dmitri the fact that he's not really any competition for us...

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 05:26 PM

Dear Tinger,

You are in the military. Can't you do something about the weather?

Full of hope,
BG

Posted by: Batgirl at April 22, 2005 05:30 PM

I see the Detriot has a winter Storm Watch for Sat night and Sun afternoon

burrrrrr.

btw, if you listen to the radio, its Jack Morris and John Gordon tonight.

Posted by: James at April 22, 2005 05:34 PM

BG- I've been working on my weather skills over here, and, well, quite frankly, they suck. They suck like Gassner in last nights game. And thats a pretty bad suck. I can, however, shoot guns, order things, and call on a radio, so if you need that, I'm the guy! But weather, thats a whole different deal...

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 05:42 PM

BG
Good news and bad news.Good news: I'm 95% through with my meteorology degree. Bad news: I think the last 5 is when they actually tell us how to CONTROL the weather. Check back with me in July though.

I'm trying to place the music that's played on MLB.TV before the live broadcast starts, when the schedule is up on the screen. It reminds me of some old school nintendo game, i want to say Contra, but i'm not sure.

Oh goody, Dick and Bert tonight. That can only mean one thing. We're gonna whoop the tiggers little butts tonight.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:04 PM

Contra was an awesome game

Posted by: James at April 22, 2005 06:06 PM

And we're underway...

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 06:11 PM

Ahhhh.... let the games begin..... ok, lets try this again...with bartlett...

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:13 PM

James, it still is, my friend. It still is...

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:13 PM

nice work J.B. solid start.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:14 PM

nice to see the Good Doctor back in the lineup. Too bad he got out

Posted by: James at April 22, 2005 06:15 PM

and now, for the moment we've all been waiting for.... Enter The Dr!

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:15 PM

Welcome back Dr. Morneau, welcome back.

Though you're supposed to finish your swing, remember?

Posted by: TBird41 at April 22, 2005 06:15 PM

eh... not a wonderful start, but not bad either.

Jackal Time. (I'm all aflutter)

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:17 PM

This is why the Twins need a retractable roof:

Lets go Silva! Welcome back! Good to see Morneau back too!

Posted by: Paul at April 22, 2005 06:18 PM

I need to know. When the Dr. was up, did he look gunshy at all? Maybe a little rusty? I worry about these things.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 06:19 PM

oh my

torii

Posted by: James at April 22, 2005 06:19 PM

Torii had a case of ass-glove.

Posted by: Shaun at April 22, 2005 06:20 PM

ACK!

Posted by: infield at April 22, 2005 06:21 PM

Moral High Ground Torii.

what the hell what that all about?! holy crap.

are my eyes deceiving me?

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:21 PM

Did Torii and The Jackal get into an arguement before that game that would have caused him to want to pop out to the catcher and drop a routine fly ball?

Or do we just like coming from behind?

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:22 PM

Ryan - I didn't think so, however he lined out on a check-swing if that means anything to you.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 06:24 PM

Wow, Dr. Morneau is looking pretty good out there... glad to see he go up quick and didn't jam a wrist or something!

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:24 PM

There is no cable at Casa de la qjw, so I happily listen to the games on the radio.

Mmmmmmmmmm.....Black Jack.

Posted by: qjw at April 22, 2005 06:27 PM

Nice Job Cuddy. Screw up Lew's steal, and then GIDP. Where's Tiffee?

Posted by: mongo at April 22, 2005 06:28 PM

GIDP...big surprise.

Posted by: Shaun at April 22, 2005 06:28 PM

MLB.TV is slow today. Wow.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:29 PM

I guess maybe i'm happy with not seeing us GIDP. that stuff is gettin old fast. wait, it was old last week sometime.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:30 PM

I can't tell you how much that reassures me. If the past few games have taught us anything, we need someone like the Dr. to hit fly balls when the bases are loaded with one out. If we had him in that Bitch Sox series, I daresay we would be working on a 10 game winning streak right now. But I may be a little starry eyed.

But here's a question for all of you. Would you rather have LeCroy as catcher #3 and still have Tiffee here, or Corky "Corky" Miller as our #3 catcher? I say put Fat Matt behind the plate when, say, Bradke is pitching. He throws the ball straight, and Matty doesnt have to move much.

And I wish GIDP was a category in my fantasy leagy, because Cuddy would be worth his weight in gold.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 06:31 PM

"Or do we just like coming from behind?"

Heee! Naughty Tinger!

And, DO sit down, Dmitri.

Posted by: qjw at April 22, 2005 06:31 PM

I hope the Cuddiary is full of Sturm und Drang.

Posted by: Haplo at April 22, 2005 06:32 PM

How about Cuddy 2B, Tiffee 3B, Dr 1B?

Posted by: JHK at April 22, 2005 06:33 PM

The Jackal is looking sharp out there.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:33 PM

Silva doing his best Santana impression...

Posted by: infield at April 22, 2005 06:33 PM

Holy cats, Carlos!

S, S, S, bitches.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 06:34 PM

Would it be S-S-S or J-J-J for jackal?

Posted by: JHK at April 22, 2005 06:34 PM

Out until after the All-Star break MY ASS!!!

Sit down, tiggers!

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:35 PM

S, since Johan's got "J"

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 06:36 PM

I'm so happy that we have third starter that isn't named Kyle.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 06:36 PM

If Mr Jackal can stay so sharp after being out on the 15 day DL, I expect the good Doctor to hit a few dingers.

Posted by: JHK at April 22, 2005 06:37 PM

Damn Luis. Damn.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:38 PM

I was on the phone (while watching the game) when Torii . . . didn't catch the ball.

My boyfriend was here in the living room and exclaimed so loudly and sounding in such pain, that the person on the other end of the line was wondering what sort of trauma had afflicted Kevin.

But of course, he was just pained by seeing Torii . . . you know.

Man. Rain must've got in his eyes. Yup.

And is it me or can you see the breath of the guys out there? Brrrrrrr.

Posted by: Laurel at April 22, 2005 06:39 PM

Is Bartlett the guy we got for Buck Buchanan, or is that someone else?

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 06:41 PM

Ryan--Bartlett came to the Twins in the Buck Buchanon trade.

Posted by: TBird41 at April 22, 2005 06:41 PM

holy crap. The count was 0-2, then it was 2-2, and without any time going by, the ads were on. Stupid MLB.TV. and Stupid 1-2-3 innings..

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:42 PM

So far, I like that trade.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 06:42 PM

C'mon, Jackal. How's about making the OTHER GUYS GIDP?

Posted by: qjw at April 22, 2005 06:43 PM

Nook?

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 06:44 PM

Nook Logan=awesome name.

I mean, it's just amazing and a heck of a lot better than Coco Crisp.

Posted by: TBird41 at April 22, 2005 06:45 PM

The name "Nook" has some awesome potential. However, I'm going to hate that name if he continues doing things like that

Posted by: TBird41 at April 22, 2005 06:46 PM

Ugh... we just got Nooked

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 06:46 PM

Uh oh. A little nerve-wracking here in the bottom of the third. I wish Nook Logan and his name would sit right back down on the bench.

What is with all these bloop hits?! MUCH better than homeruns though.

Posted by: Mimiru at April 22, 2005 06:47 PM

Too many runners on bases too close to home...

i'm not digging this. Come on Jackal. Bring on the S

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:47 PM

No kidding, these bloops are annoying.

Posted by: Shaun at April 22, 2005 06:48 PM

Yes, that's it. THEY GIDP.

Posted by: qjw at April 22, 2005 06:50 PM

How come other teams score when they hit double plays?

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 06:51 PM

Well, 3-0 in the third inning. Silva hasn't looked terrible, but the Tigers are getting key hits.

Cuddyer is having some major problems hitting and hopefully he will be able to turn things around.

Whoever said Cuddyer-2b, Tiffee-3B is exactly what I think. However, I think that Rivas may be the better option at this time. Cuddyer just doesn't seem to have it in him and I would rather have Rivas and his defense and speed than Cuddyer.

Jeez, another bloop hit.

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 06:51 PM

Maybe the Jackal is a bit rusty? Or maybe it's cold so the ball isn't sinking as well. Cold air doesn't move as easily as warm so it might be keeping the ball up.

Regardless, nice job by Mauer.

Posted by: Mimiru at April 22, 2005 06:52 PM

Methinks someone should make sure to remind the Boys that the weather is poor and they can't wait for a 9th inning comeback tongiht. maybe a 3rd inning comeback. And they gotta stop with this giving up hits thing.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:53 PM

The doctor is in the house!

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 06:57 PM

Oh, Doctor! Come on, Torii, you owe us.

Posted by: edge at April 22, 2005 06:58 PM

Thats a good doctor! Welcome back, we've definately missed you!

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:58 PM

Well, OK. It's a start.

Hey, Boyfriend, how 'bout an RBI or two? Now, please, dear? For me?

Posted by: qjw at April 22, 2005 06:59 PM

We've been hitting doubles, and that's good, but doesn't it seem like the runner on first hasn't been scoring as much as they should? Eh, I'll start worrying about it when someone else does.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 06:59 PM

My MLB.TV had to rebuffer 4 times between Dr. hitting that ball, and the ball getting back to the infield. This is MADDENING!

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 06:59 PM

Yes, that's a good Boyfriend, Jacque.

Posted by: qjw at April 22, 2005 07:01 PM

C'mon Lewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Posted by: Adam at April 22, 2005 07:01 PM

Now this is Twins small-ball. Welcome back Justin and thank you Jacque Jones for not sucking against a LHP.

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:01 PM

I am calling a Lew homer.

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 07:01 PM

Well, i have no idea what happened, because i had to reload AGAIN, but i see we have another run and theres a runner on first. So i'll just take that and be happy.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:03 PM

Poop.

Posted by: qjw at April 22, 2005 07:03 PM

...or a fielder's choice and caught stealing...

I am like 1 for 34826738596 in calls this season.

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 07:04 PM

Caught stealing? damn. Lew, you're just not *quite* Torii. But i still love ya.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:06 PM

My goodness Stacy, that's like Cuddy's average with runners in scoring position

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 07:07 PM

Aw, s'OK, Stacy. It's only April -- plenty of season left for you to refine your predictionability!

Posted by: qjw at April 22, 2005 07:07 PM

Well, if they don't get to the fifth inning, Hunter's error doesn't count and Dick and Bert's missed trivia question doesn't count.

Here's hoping ;).

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:08 PM

we're really not doing all that bad overall... *knock on wood*

we're only one brain-fart from being tied...

Nice DP boys

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:08 PM

"Caught stealing? damn. Lew, you're just not *quite* Torii."

No, your right he isnt, Lew would have caught that ball in the first. ;)

Posted by: Paul at April 22, 2005 07:10 PM

Yeah, let him have it Jackal. I heard him talk smack about your mom, too. He had it coming.

Dick and Bert missed the trivia?! oh man, come on rain...

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:10 PM

Good humor, paul. Thats good humor.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:11 PM

Thanks for the support, guys!

Bert is very upset, lol.

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 07:11 PM

Ok, 5th inning's here. no more rain. Come on bats. Lets see DJ Cuddles bust out of a slump here.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:12 PM

what was the traiva question?

Posted by: James at April 22, 2005 07:13 PM

or just keep on slumping. whatever you prefer.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:14 PM

Who was the youngest player to win a GG.

They thought it was Pudge.

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 07:14 PM

Who was the youngest ballplayer to ever win a Gold Glove?

They guessed Ivan Rodriguez.

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:14 PM

oooh

I have no clue. A pitcher maybe?

Posted by: James at April 22, 2005 07:15 PM

Beat me to it Stacy ;).

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:15 PM

I wonder if Cuddyer realizes what he is doing to my fantasy team?

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 07:15 PM

Well, its good to see we have the ground-out down to a science tonight.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:16 PM

Tim,

Jinx ;)

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 07:16 PM

What was the right answer to the trivia? I missed the right answer, but caught all the good stuff after that....Is there a Dick and Bert T-Shirt?

We are an official game now, so we need two runs...so how about one of those really fast innings by Silva, then a bloop and a blast!!

Posted by: Paul at April 22, 2005 07:18 PM

Attaboy, Nook. Keep the cool name, AND bunt out to the catcher. See, EVERYONE'S a winner!

Nook Logan - Tigger's CF'er? or extra on CSI: NY? What an awful picture (MLB Gameday)!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 07:20 PM

Hunter got that one.

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:21 PM

Good inning. We should do that more often. (well, the bottom half, anyway)

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:21 PM

I like your site Tim.

I also like it when the Tiggers dont do anything for 2 innings in a row.

Whew.

Trivia: Youngest player to win a Gold Glove
Answer Ken Hobbs

Is he under a different name? I'm searching Baseball Reference but can't find him anywhere.

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:23 PM

Ken Hobbs...hmmm, is that the full name of the cat, or cat like thing in Calvin and Hobbs?

Ooo, Hunter didn't drop that one, maybe he is back in Detroit now, since he sure wasnt there in the first inning.

Posted by: Paul at April 22, 2005 07:23 PM

We sure do have alot of guys on our team who's name starts with J. I think thats the key to victory.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:24 PM

Come on, Bartlett! Be a good boyfriend and get a hit for Infield!

Posted by: infield at April 22, 2005 07:24 PM

Thanks Ryan. I'm trying to give a different view of the Twins - my view. I would recommend visitings Jonzard and Jason's site also. We're from www.ootpdevelopments.com and have same interests in the Twins.

You can never have enough Twins blogging sites ;).

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:25 PM

come on, Good Doctor. Pick up the team here.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:26 PM

Dearest Twins,

Please get a couple runs. Silva should be welcomed back with a win.

Man i love that GIDP when its in our favor!

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:31 PM

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 07:31 PM

Err... make that GIDP, and another S!

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 07:32 PM

I have this feeling that someoen is playing tricks on Dick and Bert. I-Rod was 20 years old when he wont his GG. I can't find anything on google to who was the youngest to win the GG and Baseballref doesn't have anyone named Ken Hobbs.

Google does say the I-Rod is the second youngest, but can't find who was first youngest. Anyone know?

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:32 PM

S S S S S

Posted by: infield at April 22, 2005 07:32 PM

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm totally feeling a Torii Hunter homerun today.
I think since we are so preoccupied with Cuddy and LeRoy and other inept fielders/hitters, we sometimes forget that its Torii that makes our team go.

I mean, he played a flower in a commercial!

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 07:33 PM

I wonder if young REALLY thought he was good enough to start talking smack so early in the year? I almost feel sorry for the guy. Almost. Not like a K.C. feel sorry for the guy... more of a "oh, poor bitch sox pitcher just got his ass hit by the torii train" sorry. Which really isn't *that* sorry.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:33 PM

Couldn't agree with you more, Tinger. One thing I and some local Bitch Sox fans agree on is that Dmitri Young is an ass-clown.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 07:36 PM

here we go with this pickoff to first thing, now torii's gonna steal again and make Kyle look dumb.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:37 PM

Hunter takes another bag! Dammit, I should have taken him for my fantasy team!

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 07:38 PM

Man, thats about as automatic these days as Count Chocula. I love it.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:38 PM

Time to lock the valuables up, Torii is at it again.

Man, who puts the ants in his pants this year. I'm lovin' it.

Posted by: Eric at April 22, 2005 07:39 PM

This is an important inning. They NEED to score a run. This could be the potential last inning and if they don't score, that could be dangerous.

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:39 PM

Torii Hunter is my non-sexual man-crush. Sadly, I refuse to call a grown man "Sweetcheeks".

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 07:39 PM

Ryan- you said Ass-clown. Nice. Thats gotta be my favorite reference to anyone. Except i like to add a little, and go with "No-talent-ass-clown".

Attaboy, JJ! glad the middle of our order is producing tonight. COME ON LEWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:40 PM

Gold glove stuff: I found Johnny Bench, 1968 as the youngest to win a gold glove, it is in the middle of this big messy buch of words: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Pressbox/7526/griffeyscareerhighlight.html

Hunter entered the game tied for the AL lead with Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki with seven stolen bases.

"Right now, I'm faster than Ichiro," Hunter boasted.

Skorch,

Torii is on my fantasy team;)

Between him and Lew, I have gained some major points this week.

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 07:43 PM

Oh Lew, you magnificent dork.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 07:43 PM

God dang Michael Cuddyer...

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:43 PM

LEEEEEEWWWWWWW!! Thanks Lew!

Oops, Cuddyer brings back bad memories of The Guzman School of Bunting, nearly had a infield fly called on that one.

Posted by: Paul at April 22, 2005 07:43 PM

what happened to Dr. Cuddles? MAN he's in a slump lately. it saddens me to great extents..

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:43 PM

Cuddy is just not getting it done...

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 07:44 PM

It's LeRoy, in the role he was born to play...

Posted by: mk at April 22, 2005 07:44 PM

Quick former twins update. Jeb, pay attention here. Koskie hit a 2 run shot for Toronto. Cuddyer popped out to the catcher.... hmmmmm depressing.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:45 PM

Eric, the thought is that this game won't be finished because of the rain.

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:45 PM

Matty pinching for Rivas...wouldn't it be great to see him try to turn two as a defensive substitution - that would be a guaranteed web gem??!!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 07:45 PM

Listening to Morris talk about Cuddyer's "bunt", you can almost hear him think to himself "No cussing. I can't cuss on the broadcast..."

Posted by: mk at April 22, 2005 07:45 PM

I almost hope Gardy keeps LeRoy in at 2b. It would be one of the most hilarious managerial decisions of all time.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 07:46 PM

GIDPSUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 07:47 PM

sigh

Posted by: infield at April 22, 2005 07:47 PM

LUIS! that was not sexy. not even a little bit. at least we got the run from Hunter (who, i might add, i'd rather have than ichiro any day).

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:47 PM

Ken Hobbs IIRC, was a rookie 2B phenom for the Cubs around 1962.

He was killed in a plane crash during the off-season after his rookie year.

Posted by: kojak at April 22, 2005 07:48 PM

I concur Tinger...

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 07:48 PM

BW, we both had the same thought. I cant think of anything else that would get me rolling on the floor like Matty diving for a ground ball.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 07:48 PM

Ok, i just lost alot of respect for CBSSportsline. apparently they couldn't tell the difference between Mr. Donuts and Rivas. Thats sad. Someone should get fired.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:49 PM

Now this is a time where I miss the golden days of Gameday Audio, when they'd leave the mikes hot between innings. I would've loved to have heard what Morris *really* thought about that bunt attempt...

Posted by: mk at April 22, 2005 07:49 PM

Touche, Tim.

The egg is firmly on my face. I retract earlier sarcasm.

I should know better than to act like a Bitch Sox fan, but sometimes I don't know to. My apologies.

Posted by: Eric at April 22, 2005 07:49 PM

Can we send Cuddyer down and bring back Tiffee? Please? Or we could let Castro play a bit.

Posted by: Laurel at April 22, 2005 07:49 PM

yeah, diving to his right, hitting the dirt and flipping to the good doctor for the put-out - maybe back in his tennis playing days, but never again...

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 07:50 PM

Punto's in at 2nd. I take it to mean that nobody on the Twins staff can locate where Nate Robertson is right now?

Posted by: mk at April 22, 2005 07:50 PM

Hey BW! good to see ya here.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:51 PM

Eric, I was just making sure that you didn't think that I was an idiot. No hard feelings and it's okay if you're a Sox fan. I have a lot of respect for them, I just hope that we can beat them in the end.

It looks like they should get this game in though - but I can't seem to see any rain on my TV

But Cuddyer needs to go...he just can't do anything!

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:52 PM

You too my good man, but it will be better to see you in person ! ! !

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 07:52 PM

I think he would bounce at least half a foot.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 07:52 PM

No wonder I couldn't Google it.

The name was Ken Hubbs. In 1962, Hubbs played in 160 games, banged out 172 hits, scored 90 runs, collected 49 RBI and a respectable .260 average on his way to claiming National League Rookie of the Year honors. In 1963 the Cubs' Hubbs played in fewer games, banged out fewer hits, scored fewer runs, collected fewer RBI and hit for a lower average. In 1964 Ken Hubbs was out of baseball. He died in February of 1964.

Posted by: kojak at April 22, 2005 07:53 PM

MK- i think he was last seen lurking around the entrance to the twins dugout... so they put LNP out at 2nd for a little extra precaution.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:53 PM

LeCroy staying in at 2B - LOL! That would be just too funny! If needed he could just lay down over the bag, there would be no way the base runner could find the bag!!!

Silva! Nice 7 innings! Shall we get him a run here so he can get the win?

Posted by: Paul at April 22, 2005 07:54 PM

Good God man,

I only said _act_ like a Sox fan.

I am in no way a Bitch Sox fan. I despise them. More power to you in being able to respect them.

*shudders*

Posted by: Eric at April 22, 2005 07:54 PM

Ok, now for Stewie to get his hit for the game, and the rest of the order to keep on rollin!

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:55 PM

which is better - the hat-tilt to the left like Nook, or the right like Captain Cheeseburger?

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 07:55 PM

kojak, http://www.baseball-reference.com/h/hubbske01.shtml

Hubbs ;). Very close :). Thanks for the trivia question answer.

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:55 PM

Tinger,

Good to know that. We all know what happened to Punto after the last time...

Posted by: mk at April 22, 2005 07:55 PM

Kojak - Yeah, that'll limit your growth as a player.

Alright, Stewart, Bartlett, and Mauer leading off. Lets go.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 07:55 PM

I dont know, which way did Guzman always tilt his hat? because apparently that worked for his year-long case of ass-bat to come alive just enough to go yard tonight... damn, thats two guys tonight. you don't see that real often! (except for Ortiz)

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:57 PM

HAIL TO THE CHIEF!! Without looking it up, does this qualify as a quality start for Silva? What happened to "out until the all-star break"?!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 07:57 PM

Tim- no problem.

Skorch- I don't think it was the limited growth so much as the severe drop off. ;-)

Posted by: kojak at April 22, 2005 07:58 PM

Quality start...yes. Glad to see Silva pitch well after possibly being out for the season.

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 07:58 PM

BW,

It is indeed a quality start for The Jackal.

MK

Posted by: mk at April 22, 2005 07:58 PM

I suck at algebra, or math in general, but i DO know that fly-outs do not equal runs.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 07:59 PM

Aw, c'mon, don't pick on Guzie. He had a good year or two with the Twins (overall). When he was good, he was really something.

I still miss hearing the goosecall in the Dome. And the na-na-na-na-na commercials.

Posted by: Laurel at April 22, 2005 07:59 PM

Kojak - brings back memories of Joe Charaboneau and Marty Cordova!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 07:59 PM

See, I think the tilt as to do with handedness, in that if you are a righty, you will have insufficient hat placement abilities that cause the hat to err to the left, as with Nook, and vice versa with C.C.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 08:00 PM

Quality start = 6 innings pitched, 3 or less earned runs. Only two of those runs should be earned.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 08:00 PM

Dangit. Joe was supposed to go yard. Oh, well.

Posted by: Laurel at April 22, 2005 08:00 PM

he's only sitting at 83 pitches so far. not bad for 7 innings of work. Isn't that about what Gassner had last night after 1 1/3?

Sure is good to have him back.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:00 PM

Correct. The first Detroit run was scored by a runner who would have never been on base save for the error, which automatically makes it an unearned run.

Posted by: infield at April 22, 2005 08:01 PM

Hah! Gordo mention that they didn't have anyone up in the bullpen right before the break, and now Gameday's reporting that Old Man Mullholland's been wheeled out to the mound...

Posted by: mk at April 22, 2005 08:02 PM

Wow, BW, I actually remember Joe. He was famous for opening beer bottles with his teeth. Probably added another generation to whatever curse the Indians are bound by...

Posted by: kojak at April 22, 2005 08:02 PM

And it's the crafty old man Mulholland in to try and nurse us into the 9th with a tie.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 08:03 PM

Duckfart bloop single, and now I-Rod. No problem...

and Ivan bunts?!? Small ball, sure, but Ivan's got a better bat than that. That's nervy.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 08:04 PM

Gah!

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 08:05 PM

Aw, crap.

Posted by: infield at April 22, 2005 08:06 PM

Ok, what the hell is goign on right now? i'm guessing the same guy that should be getting fired for thinking LeCroy was Rivas should still be getting fired. It says "Rivas at second" on sportsline again. as if he just went in for... well, himself?

Come on Grandpa Mullholland! doubles don't win ball games unless YOUR TEAM hits them. neither do RBI singles! Damn!

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:06 PM

booo

:(

Posted by: James at April 22, 2005 08:06 PM

Thanks MK and Skorch - good info

Kojak, kind of the same effect Cordova had on the Twins in the 90's!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:07 PM

Cordova = Old Boyfriend

Posted by: qjw at April 22, 2005 08:07 PM

I like it better when they put the old man into games that area pretty much decided allready. Or for long relief situations. Not so much in the 8th inning trying to hold a lead.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:08 PM

And I guess that's why Alan Trammell is managing the Tigers instead of me. I've have told Rodriguez to ground out to short.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 08:08 PM

$*!@*$@!!! Who's in the flippin' bullpen??!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:09 PM

The sad thing is, as soon as I saw Mully on the mound I knew we'd lose this one.

Posted by: Kurtis at April 22, 2005 08:09 PM

Oh Dmitri, please live up to our expectations of you here. (GIDP)

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:09 PM

Good job Dumb-itri, we knew we could count on you!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:11 PM

Completely off-topic, anyone know where (or if) you can get Twins jerseys smaller than size 40?

Posted by: infield at April 22, 2005 08:11 PM

I'm feeling very uneasy right now, bases loaded with The old man out on the hill... my hopes and dreams are crumbling all around me....

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:11 PM

infield: J.C. Penney Kids section??

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:12 PM

Ok, down by a run, and Percival's coming in to try for his first save of the season.

I've got him on my fantasy team, but I'd be completely fine with him blowing this save too.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 08:13 PM

Ahh.

It's nice to see that the shoe is on the other foot for once.

Posted by: mk at April 22, 2005 08:13 PM

BW: Really?

Posted by: infield at April 22, 2005 08:14 PM

Nobody scores when the bases are loaded in a Twins game!

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 08:14 PM

THANK YOU BASEBALL GODS!!! Old man, i'm proud of you for getting out of that situation, but a little dissappointed about the run... I think Hunter is going to be clutch here. He can't just go a whole game without a hit... This is a good situation for us with this part of the order coming up

I hope we keep owning Percival

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:14 PM

Hey, Percival has proved himself human to the Twins recently, another blown save should be enough to get him off the all-time Twins Killer team for now.

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:15 PM

I have my rally cap on. (hope they dont get pissed about rally caps in the army!)

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:16 PM

Posted by: infield at April 22, 2005 08:17 PM

Infield - sorry, I was being a smart aleck - try this: http://store.walloffame.net/mintwincusma1.html

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:17 PM

Posted by: mk at April 22, 2005 08:17 PM

FUCKIN' A! Morneau's first homer of the season is a blast off of Percival!

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 08:17 PM

I dont know if we can say we will "keep" owning him, when we only recently....purchased.... him. Either way, Im still predicting a Hunter Homer.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 08:17 PM

YES!!!!!! WELCOME BACK DR. MORNEAU!!!!!!

THANK YOU TROY PERCIVAL!!!! I LOVE YOU RIGHT NOW!

PHYSICIAN, HEAL THYSELF!!!

By the way, has anyone ever eaten at the Band Box Diner downtown Mpls??

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:18 PM

The "basas-loaded" thing must have rubbed off in the Sox too. They just had bases loaded 1-out and scored a run thanks only to the generous base-on-balls.

Same thing against the Tiggers yesterday

Posted by: kojak at April 22, 2005 08:18 PM

I

LOVE

YOU

DOCTOR!!

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 08:18 PM

Sweeet!!! The Dr. makes a house call!

Posted by: Shaun at April 22, 2005 08:18 PM

LOL BW... Top can uh.... well, use your imagination! The rally cap worked! he'll be happy as hell! lol

Oh man, Hunter, not a career day for ya huh buddy? well, we'll get 'em tomorrow!

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:19 PM

I actually have to watch SportsCenter tonight too see that HR. The radio guys are shocked how far that went on this cold night

Posted by: James at April 22, 2005 08:19 PM

Jones is batting .406 so far? Very nice. He's been taking a lot of walks too this season. His OBP must be positively un Jacque-Jones-like.

Posted by: skorch at April 22, 2005 08:20 PM

If I go by Gameday, Doc hit that ball to Grosse Point.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 08:20 PM

He's got some catching up to do, but it would be AWESOME to see the Dr. get about 39 more of those this year!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:21 PM

Holy crap, is sportsline playing tricks on me, or is every other one of Percivals pitches 10 miles outside the strike zone?

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:21 PM

I wonder if the Tigers are asking "Are you SURE this is the guy that owned the Twins?? 40 innings without giving up an earned run?? You are really sure???"

Hehe!! Way to go Morneau.

Lew was just robbed....Robbed I tell ya.

Posted by: Paul at April 22, 2005 08:22 PM

Kojak - We know all too well that pain. No offense, but I'd have no problem if your team kept doing that. :-)

Dammit, Monroe? Who do you think you are, Hunter? That was a hell of a catch.

Posted by: skorch at April 22, 2005 08:22 PM

*pouts*

The Tigers are NOT supposed to make good plays in the field.

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 08:23 PM

Ok, time for some pitching and some Defense. Shouldn't be anything to worry about really... I mean, we ARE the twins... who's on the mound this inning?

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:23 PM

Ok, what are the implications of pinch hitting for Punto?? I guess Castro could play 2B for the 9th??

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:23 PM

Terry Mulholland? I guess they're anticipating extra innings and saving Joe Nathan. I hope the decision pays off!

Posted by: Belle at April 22, 2005 08:24 PM

brain got ahead of me...never mind...

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:24 PM

Mulholland's back out. Evidently bingo's been cancelled tonight.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 08:25 PM

Thats a good Omar. Fly out. Good boy.

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:25 PM

Posted by: mk at April 22, 2005 08:25 PM

Mulholland for another inning?! Nooo! What is going on?

Posted by: sacky at April 22, 2005 08:25 PM

None taken Skorch.

Actually, I wouldn't mind either, so long as this pitching holds up...

DP ball... come on...

Posted by: Tinger at April 22, 2005 08:26 PM

I wonder what the smallest spread between oldest player and manager is in the league. Gardy/TJM has to be the smalles, if not really really close.

Posted by: Ryan at April 22, 2005 08:26 PM

It's the goatee, BW. Goatees never look good on anyone. Least of all Justin Morneau, but thankfully he seems to have given up on that little stunt.

Nice throw by Hunter.

LOL @ Skorch

Posted by: James at April 22, 2005 08:31 PM

Nice DP there by Hunter, although he didnt know it right away that he needed to throw to first...Is he seem like he isnt there tonight?

Posted by: Paul at April 22, 2005 08:31 PM

Wow, that was all sorts of ugly:

Nook Logan forgets how many outs there are, runs on a 1-out flyball

Torii catches flyball, doesn't throw to double Nook off

And then... I'm not sure, but I think the ump might have missed the call. Nook looked awfully close to safe.

Posted by: sacky at April 22, 2005 08:31 PM

Percival's back out too? Isn't it common knowledge that he's only good for one inning?

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 08:32 PM

Tinger-
I suppose we could do it like that, but I have neither fabulous prizes nore even fabulouser models.

Have you ever played golf at The Course at Wente Vineyards? Great place in Livermore!

Ok, that inning was just a little too fast.

Kojak - how about Johnny LaRue?? I have NR DVD pre-ordered on Amazon...counting the days!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:38 PM

Is Gardy *daring* them to score a run with Mulholland back out there? Why was Crain warming?

It's only Ivan Rodriguez batting.

NOOOOOOOOOO

:kicks screams:

Posted by: James at April 22, 2005 08:39 PM

Good call Skorch-remember the year the Angels won the WS? In the first game of the ALCS against the Yankees, there were great grumblings about not going to Percival earlier to put the Yankees away. It was justified by the coaching staff that he couldn't pitch, sit for a half inning, and be effective for another 3 outs. At the time, it seemed like such a wasted opportunity-how many times to you get to go 1-0 on the Yanks postseason? Well...we know how that all turned out.

Mulholland best stay away from me if he knows what's best for him.

Cr*p!!
DOUBLE FARTS!!

Posted by: BW at April 22, 2005 08:42 PM

I don't blame TJM so much as Gardy sending him out inning after inning after inning. It was a time bomb waiting to go off. After all, he did give up the winning once, so why give him a chance to do it again?

Meanwhile, the damned Whox seem like they'll never lose again.

On the bright side...

WELCOME BACK, SILVA AND MORNEAU!

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 08:44 PM

Kurtis,

Good point. Where was Boo Berry?

Oh well, once the stretch starts coming, the Sox will blow it. April hot streaks mean nothing.

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 08:45 PM

Stacy - Indeed, good performances by both of them tonight. Double and a homer for Doc, Silva went 7 with only 2 earned runs.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 08:46 PM

And on a side note...

I am pretty sure that Jasmine Santana is more mature than Dmitri Young. What a whiny baby.

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 08:46 PM

Speaking of the Whox, the difference between Ozzie and the Big Whine is smaller than Gardy and TJM.... but TJM is older than Ozzie, so go figure.

Ron Gardenhire Goes to Mystic Lake

Dealer: "...and Dealer has 16."
Gardy: "Hit me."
Dealer: 19
Gardy: "Hit me."
Dealer: "20!"
Gardy: "Hit me."
Dealer "21!"
Gardy: "Hit me."

I realize this bit might be older than Mullholand, but seriously, WTF was going on leaving him in another inning? Did Gardy get locked in the bathroom?

Posted by: Matt N. at April 22, 2005 08:59 PM

Matt N.,
HILARIOUS!!!

Posted by: Stacy at April 22, 2005 09:04 PM

And also sad.

No worries about the L tonight, all can be good in the world again with a series win. I just hope the snow doesn’t stop play!

The loss sucks, but there's always the promise of playing some snowball tomorrow and Sunday. Brrr! I got shivers just watching. On the bright side, it's nice to see the good doctor back on the field and knocking one into the seats. Even better that it was off Percival.

I also have to tip my beloved Twins cap to all of you who are posting here. Of all the blogs and online forums I've read, the Bat Girl readers are by far the nicest, funniest, most grammatically correct and the best spellers. There must be some kind of award for this.

I missed most of the game. out with a friend. The end was crappy, crappy, crappy. Were you all not cheering loud enough earlier?

Mulholland? in the 10th? Now I am a fan of the old guy (perhaps because I am older than the old guy)but did they not want to win this one? Gardy, certainly someone else could have pitched in the 10th. Sheesh.

Tomorrow the boys need to feel us behind them all the way to Daytwa. I'll wear socks to bed tonight--that always helps.

To my dearest DJ Cuddles:
I love you. I really do. Your dimples are adorable. But please, for the love of God, will you put the ass-bat away?!?! I was all prepared to settle down and declare you as my one and only boyfriend, but you keep bringing out the ass bat! The only good thing about you leading off an inning is that you can't GIDP, which is what you do anytime anyone's on base! Please, for all of us here, put away the ass-bat! That's all we ask. Thank you.

Posted by: ndtf at April 22, 2005 09:32 PM

I think that the Twins can win in a snowball fight. Hunter and the pitchers have some dang good arms and would do well in a snowball fight which is what tomorrow's game could end up being.

Posted by: Tim Minnesota at April 22, 2005 10:31 PM

Why Gardy? Why is TJM even on the team? Why one inning for TJM much less three? Am I crazy or do we have three lights out relief pitchers (J.C. Joe and Rincon)who never even got warm.

Come on Gardy, anyone but Mully, I'll take Juan Castro to pitch over mulholland in that situation. forget that, I'll take Fidel Castro to pitch before Mully in that spot.

In defense of Mulholland, I think he does have a place on this team as an innings-eater and secondary coach, and has done well in those roles in the past. I definitely don't think he should have been out there for a third inning considering who was leading off, but whatever.

If I remember correctly, Romero, Rincon, and Nathan have all pitched the previous two days. They could have probably gone again but since it's so early in the season I understand letting those arms rest. Every game counts, but having those arms that much fresher down the stretch isn't a bad thing either.

Even though he pitched yesterday too, I thought he should have brought Crain in to pitch the 10th. Win or lose, it would have given him a chance to get used to the high pressure. Maybe Gardy didn't want a loss to affect him psychologically, but if he's the "closer of the future" he's got to get used to the idea of it some time.

Posted by: Skorch at April 22, 2005 11:23 PM

I'm not really blaming Mully, This is about Gardy. I love him but he was on another planet tonight. I felt like I was watching an episode of the "Twins Twilight zone" when I saw old man Mully on the mound in the Tenth. I mean this is the bottom half of a frickin extra inning game. Was I the only one who saw TJM give Detroit the lead in the eighth and barely lucking out of a bases loaded jam. Then luckily getting out of trouble with a bone head play by Nook in the ninth.

Posted by: John at April 23, 2005 12:11 AM

How about this Gardy: Bring in Rincon/Romero in the eighth, they hold the tie. Morneau hits a dinger in the top of the ninth (Morneau, Hunter, Jones due up) Twins 4-3. Bottom nine: Bring in Nathan (five for five so far on saves). He makes it six for six. There it is. simple, easy .............or we can put out a fourty two year old with a huge ERA for three straight innings on a cold, rainy day while we watch the division float away to the Sox.

Hey, can anyone tell me why Mulholland was still our there after like 2-3 innings? Why wasn't he taken out?

Posted by: MNPundit at April 23, 2005 03:13 PM

>Even though he pitched yesterday too, I thought he should have brought Crain in to pitch the 10th. Win or lose, it would have given him a chance to get used to the high pressure.

And if the game continues, who pitches the hypothetical 11th, 12th, etc.?
