From the PiPress:
Pitcher Kyle Lohse defeated the Twins Friday in baseball's first arbitration hearing of the year.Posted by Batgirl at February 11, 2005 04:11 PMLohse, eligible for arbitration for the first time in his career, will make $2.4 million this year after earning $395,000 in 2004. The Twins had offered the right-hander $2.15 million, but arbitrators Christine Knowlton, Robert Bailey and Elliott Shriftman decided in favor of Lohse, 26, one day after a hearing in Tampa, Fla.
"It feels good," said Lohse, 9-13 with a 5.34 earned-run average in 34 starts last season. "You feel justified about going in with the number that we did."

Posted by: The Arbitors at February 11, 2005 04:27 PMWhat's the league average on sub-par, neurotic cry-babies?
... I'm so angry my spine's about to liquify
Posted by: Haplo at February 11, 2005 04:37 PMI really think this is going to be Kyle's year. No really, I do. He's going to settle in, put the past behind him, trust his stuff and do very well. I just know it.
Yours,
k-bro
I think Lyle Kohse got the $2.15 million and Kyle Lohse gets the $250,000. Obviously they only watched the Kyle Lohse statistices/games.
Posted by: jameshkong at February 11, 2005 04:52 PMWhile it is surprising (albeit, the Boras impact is large) that Lohse was able to win his case, the fact that we have a 25-year old pitcher with pretty good stuff for only $2.4MM isn't the worst possible situation. Sure, he has been frustrating & inconsistent in the past, but he still is 25 (isn't he?, didn't look it up but going off memory). I, for one, am not too disappointed with the signing (we only paid a couple hundred thou over our offer), and hope that he is able to be improving, as most pitchers in their mid-20s seem to do.
Great title!
Kyle,
I love you, really. You're totally my starting rotation boyfriend (since Santana is SO out of my league). Anyway, please take those warm fuzzy feelings and your millions of dollars and work on not sucking.
Indulgently (but threateningly) yours,
She-Ra, P.O.P.

Quite honestly the funniest thing I've read all day.
Posted by: HooliganKat at February 11, 2005 05:02 PMAt the end of the 2003 season, I said, "Next year is going to be Kyle Lohse's year." And I was really looking forward to seeing him blow everybody away because I thought he had it in him. Alas, it was not to happen. I really would like to see him have a good year, for some reason I want to like the guy. All I can do now is keep my fingers crossed...
Posted by: Pepper at February 11, 2005 05:37 PMDamn! I knew I should have taken the day off and picked the arbitrator's office in Tampa. It's probably the only thing he'll win all season!
Posted by: Miraclegal at February 11, 2005 05:48 PMI have to agree with HooliganKat, that post by "The Arbitrator" was just too funny!!
The fishing hat bandit has been caught; maybe Kyle should be nicknamed the ball cap bandit…Because he definitely got away with one…
Posted by: Paul at February 11, 2005 05:53 PMDisregarding last year, I really do like Kyle. I know he is a good pitcher because he was a pretty good pitcher in 2003.
The comment from The Arbitrators did make me laugh. However, when you look at Kyle's career, he doesn't have bad numbers. It's just that he regressed last year, rather than progressed.
Here's to Kyle in 2005. Go git 'em, kid.
Just Beth
(I like Kyle, but Bradke's my starting rotation boyfriend)
I just threw up in my mouth a little.
Kyle is HOTT, but he needs to prove himself to me first before I will give myself to him.
Posted by: Donnalove at February 11, 2005 06:45 PMStrangely, there's another usage problem in Kyle's quote -- or at least a close call. "YOU feel justified going in with the number that WE did"? Sounds like California grammar to me.
Posted by: Goober at February 11, 2005 09:17 PMAs if that wasn't bad enough, another abuse of the word "hopefully." In the immortal words of Lyle:
"Hopefully, we can put that all behind us," Lohse said. "In the past, I was kind of disappointed that we had to renew and had to have this case heard. But you've heard me say it 100 times; these were separate issues and I wasn't going to let them affect me."
Posted by: Goober at February 11, 2005 09:23 PMDearest Goober,
Shouldn't that be "If that WEREN'T bad enough?"
Love,
Batgirl
Dearest Batgirl,
THPPPPPTH!
With warm best wishes,
Goober
What I want to know is why the Twins are taking a case to arbitration over $250,000.
These things should be settled before getting to arbitration.
Posted by: Cubdom Byron at February 11, 2005 10:16 PMWell, you just KNOW Batgirl and Sooz are going to have to pound some sense into that guy 9-10 times this season.
Let's review:

>>I just threw up in my mouth a little.
One of the funnier lines in that movie.
Ok, here's my problem with this whole deal. Every career ending slide towards the Mitigwaki Mammographers Class Triple C Semi Pro Baseball Team and Landscaping begins with a bad year. Chuck Knoblauch could tell you a thing or two about mental issues overriding incredible talent. So, until, and not until, Mr. Lohse shows me that he's got his crap together on a consistent basis, then I'm not sold on him.
If people got paid on potential, I'd build a new stadium for the Twins myself. Potential is great, but the world is filled with unrealized potential.
Posted by: mmmarkiep at February 11, 2005 11:11 PMI think Kyle would pitch better if he had a studly nickname. What about "bulldog" or "killer?"
"Killer Kyle" instead of Kyle "Loss"
Posted by: funoka at February 12, 2005 07:30 AMI wish all jobs had arbitration. I have to had a record about .500 last year. According to the Lohse scale, I would deserve a big raise. That would be great!
Well, I hope Kyle earns that money, because that's a lot of dome dogs.
Posted by: SoftballSuperstar at February 12, 2005 09:05 AM"As if that wasn't bad enough, another abuse of the word 'hopefully.' " --Goober
Dang you prescriptive grammarians. Can't we all just agree that "hopefully" means what 95 percent of the population thinks it means and move on? Common usage is enough to get "website" into the dictionary as one word after only a few years. Lyle is only using "hopefully" the way it's been commonly used for decades.
Hopefully,
Andre
Posted by: Andre at February 12, 2005 09:07 AMAnd the split in finitive. Don't dare to ever, remotely, for a moment forget that. If people started to think that 5 and 5 = 10 ,would that make it so? Would years of mathematical study be suddenly thrown out--- oh wait, 5 and 5 is 10, I must have meant something else.Al
Posted by: al at February 12, 2005 09:31 AMI'm not sure Lohse deserved the extra $250k he got in arbitration, but whatever. He can't be worse than he was last year, right? ...Right?!
Seriously, I'm on the side of those others who expect him to have a much better year this year. Everyone knows he's got great stuff, and he's proven durable. I'm not saying he's going to become an ace, but I'm rooting for him as Twins comeback player fo the year in 2005. Is it possible to have a comeback at age 25?
Posted by: sacky at February 12, 2005 10:26 AMum, or at age 26?
Posted by: sacky at February 12, 2005 10:30 AMIt's so cute that you all think Kyle is going to have a decent year, and not be maddeningly inconsistent and surly!
"Sure, he has been frustrating & inconsistent in the past, but he still is 25."
Frustrating? Inconsistent? Young? Signed for more money than he deserves? Sounds like a certain crap-tacular second baseman to me. Is this the year Luis turns it around, too?
Posted by: Chris at February 13, 2005 11:13 AMJohan who?
The Munchkin must come to the defense of his favorite under-achiever, Kyle Lohse. Mark my words, Kyle will rebound to become one of our better pitchers this year. He's a youngin, and was just struggling to work under increased expectations last year. I sense he'll have wins in the mid-to-high teens before Jacque is traded to the Cubs.
Now that we have worked through the Lohse case, Mr. Ryan can focus on some complimentary pitchers, like that Johan guy.
Posted by: Uppity Munchkin at February 13, 2005 11:54 AMChris--
Luis and Kyle are two different people in one regard: Kyle has shown signs of talent and Luis has not.
Posted by: Andrew at February 13, 2005 12:11 PMFirst, I agree with cubdom byron (What I want to know is why the Twins are taking a case to arbitration over $250,000.) Second, I forgot Kyle was only 25 during the season last year. Knowing that, I blame the Twins for failing him in what is usually their strong suit--player development. They brought him straight up from AA ball at some ridiculously young age (21? 22?) and have consistently let him flounder since. If there's any reason he's a head case, it's because he didn't get the support a young player needs, and now it remains to be seen whether he's irretrievably broken. (and he can be my starting rotation boyfriend anytime, but that facial hair has to go).
Posted by: twink at February 14, 2005 12:20 AMAs long as we are on the grammar police tour, shouldn't Uppity Munchkin be discussing complementary pitchers? Unless El Presidente has a fetish for making people in the clubhouse feel good about themselves with a well timed esteem booster?
Which reminds me of one of my favorite jokes.
A man walks into a bar where only the bartender is present. He sits down, orders a drink, and while the bartender is in the back stocking up, hears "That's a really nice suit." It's been a long day, and the man isn't quite sure he heard anything. But about two minutes later he hears, "Your hair cut really accentuates your cheekbones." He looks around and doesn't see anyone in the bar, so he thinks he must be going crazy. But another two minutes go by, and he hears quite clearly someone say, "nice ass." At this point the bartender walks out and asks if he can do anything. The man tells the bartender what's happened and worries he might be going crazy, and the bartender says "That's just the peanuts. They're complimentary."
